My heart’s “Beating Again”

Something that you may not know about me is that I am guilty of surfing the “hallyu wave”.  For those “hanguk-eo”-lly challenged, that means that I am fanatic of anything Korean--whether it’s food, music, style, movies, TV shows--I love it all!  Thanks to a couple of my older sisters, I was turned on to Korean shows around 2005-2006 and have to say that I am constantly impressed at the quality of production and story-telling that the Korean entertainment industry displays.

Recently, I completed watching a show entitled Beating Again (currently available on Netflix), also known as Falling For Innocence.  The show revolves around the “love-hate-just friends-keep it professional” relationship Kim Soon-Jung, the fully-committed secretary of Hermia Company and Hermia CEO Kang Min-ho, who happens to be the recipient of a heart transplant from Soon-Jung’s late husband.

I’m not going to reveal the show’s plotline but I really wanted to talk about how the show affected me.  As with most Korean dramas, there was an adequate dosage of emotion.  But the show conveyed broken people participating in questionable activities, including lying, cheating, assault and even murder.  Reflecting on the show, it definitely makes me think of all the “bad” people I encounter in life, whether directly or indirectly through media.  There aren’t really implicitly BAD people, rather there are broken people who are in desperate need of restoration and reconciliation with the Father.

Also, the show aroused remnants of despair and hopelessness hidden within me. Kang Min-ho’s parents died when he was very young causing him to live a vengeful life against his uncles and the other Hermia business partners.  My own mother died early but fortunately for me, I was older. The pain was still unbearable at the time and I get whiffs of heartache when I see children dishonoring their mothers. I really miss my mom.

My mother and I were thick as thieves, whatever that means. We really were close and she was my only friend for a long time. Watching Beating Again reminded me of how fortunate I was to have a mother like her in my life. Despite our closeness, I had many episodes of angry outbursts and me spewing out hurtful words that weren’t meant to hurt her but they did. Sigh.

Why am I mentioning this?! Maybe because the show inspired me to take this hurt and focus it on the One who can heal any hurt, no matter how dark or deep.  I have had my share of wounds but they are merely scars now and I am rejoicing at the thought of them being fully healed when I meet Him face to face in eternity. I’ll get to see mom too!

My Netflix Treasure – Beating Again/Falling for Innocence

I am slowly diluting here, it’s been ages since I last posted but I did not stop doing what I love doing – watching KDramas.  I just did not find any time to post my views and my 2 cents online.

So in this part of the world where I live, there are some restrictions on the app and website we can browse and I was so happy when it was announced that Netflix is here and imagine how elated I was when I discovered Korean Movies and Dramas in the list.  So I started browsing and I saw this KDrama ‘Beating Again’  I started watching it without reading any reviews – which I do all the time before I watch- and was thankful that I did, I was just waiting for the drama to unfold and surprise me.

So the main lead is Jung Kyung-ho whom honestly I don’t know nor heard about and the main actress is Kim So-yeon and yes same thing I don’t know her as well.

Due to my excitement of having NetFlix I just dig in and started watching even if I don’t know anything about this drama. The plot is a mean main lead who is trying to take over the family’s business as his uncle and cousin took over it. However he has a medical condition and needed a heart transplant so the usual thing happened he was given a heart from the fiancé of the main actress and well you know what’s next, he eventually have adopted the habits and of course the kindness of the heart owner and this is one of the reason why the lady eventually fell in love with him, there were some fights along the way and this journey.  

The plot is so simple and carries the usual Kdrama recipes but what’s interesting is the actor’s delivery and execution of their characters.  Though main actress is not really someone you get attached too nor her acting is something that you would appreciate, there’s nothing special about it at all.

Though this drama has the same story of a typical Kdrama what’s interesting about it is the actor, he’s just so entertaining that you would like to see more of him.  I would not probably highly recommend it as it’s not really that fascinating but yeah for those who are looking for something to watch after a marathon of a great drama, then this is for you. Enough to kill your time and yeah to entertain you a bit.

I am not sure yet on what to watch next as I have just been browsing here and there, I started watching ‘The Entertainer’ by Ji Sung – I’m still in episode 1 nothing special yet, but I will probably continue cause it’s Ji Sung, I even started watching – Creating Destiny (an old one) and Love Again and 12 Years Promise (this drama took 12 episodes before you see the main actors as the first 12 concentrates on their younger versions). It’s just all of the above are somewhat, wait what’s the word – boring – but as a Kdrama Fan I just let myself watch them and wait until one of them really take me and see who will take my undivided attention.
