actual conversation in a meeting today:
(in response to someone complimenting the art behind my desk) me: thanks my mom got it for me! ☺️
complimenter: aw moms are the best
me: haha yeah!
coworker i complain about all the time: speaking of, my mother isn't the best so i have to leave this meeting early to go to a therapy appointment
(i'm only barely paraphrasing this)

"Oh Steph wouldn't like Jason just because they have similar backgrounds because he kills people/is a criminal/fights the bats!!"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is in the 90's BEFORE he even tortured her. She doesn't go through with it, but she sees the evil he's capable of and its enough for her to justify it. She only doesn't because it "goes against what Batman taught her" but well.
That's the same man who would let her dad's friends infest her house for MONTHS until BLACK CANARY came to Gotham and handled it
Tumblr media
A grown man who would go on to verbally degrade her, withhold the tools he gave everyone else, keep her intentionally isolated and then use her lack of resources against her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So yeah. I'm sure Steph's faith in Batman and his teachings have wavered plenty. Just because DC casually discarded the way she was treated so she could play happy family with the boys, but she has NO REASON TO. Before she was aged down there was definite tension between her and Tim, and while Babs worked to get that relationship back, Bruce did no such thing. "Oh I'm just as proud of you as I was with the boys" when he thought she was dying doesn't fucking change how he treated her.
And of course, there's her own forray into betraying the family and being a criminal in The Next Batman series.
Tumblr media
That's without getting into how she was compared to Jason, the way she watched a murdered east end kid be toted as another violent, reckless, idiot who didn't think and got himself killed.
"Oh but he tried to kill Tim!" First of all, you didn't read that comic. Jason was TESTING him, they were 2 years apart MAXIMUM, and Tim FOUGHT BACK. Jason gave him a little cut and a nose bleed that he slapped a bandage on and was fine. Damian also started his first meeting with Tim antagonistically and even though he was actively hostile to her, Steph still formed a close sibling bond. Her first meeting with Tim she threw a brick at him. He spent a not significant amount of time belittling her and telling her she wasn't cut out for hero work when she came back. This is the same guy who hallucinated Jason just so Jason could be like "Oh I got myself killed don't be like me!" Can we be real she doesn't give a shit. I guess you could count Hush but. I know they retconned it so that was Jason but when the fuck would he have had the time to do that between death, catanoia, the All-caste, and his murder tour.
Stephanie understands better than anyone that desperate circumstances lead to desperate people who do bad things. Stephanie understands being belittled and compared to a rich white boy who never had to fight to survive like you did. She understands being isolated from the hero community. She understands the evil that exists and the ways the system is corrupt, and that the bad guy never STAYS caught. And it's not like she has any big problem with people who kill, Babs said in 90's she would fucking LOVE Joker to drop dead and Dinah has killed multiple times. She literally switched places with Lady Shiva? These are both women Steph looks up to. You don't think Steph would feel any admiration at all for someone who gave Bruce a taste of what it feels like to be shown up? Someone who made Roman's life hell? Someone who made Tim put action behind his shit talking? An alley kid who came back and refused to be another statistic, who showed everyone who spent the last decade calling him stupid and reckless EXACTLY how cunning he can be? None? At all?
I just find it a little hard to believe.

been chewing on this conversation between pearl and gem this week:
Gem: I know you didn't kill me!
Pearl: So what are you cranky about?
...
Gem: I'm just- you know, I wanted some drama! So, this is the drama, you're welcome.
Pearl: "This is the drama". You're telling me we could've been friends this whole time but you're just like "yoohoohoohoohoohoohoo... I hate you!"
Gem: Yeah, I mean, why not!
and i'm connecting it to gem in empires season 2, where like. in the context of the fiction everyone else had been living in that world their whole lives and that's their reality, like, it's real to them.
and meanwhile gem is just roleplaying. like, she was a being from another world who just came there because she wanted to play at being a human princess for a while. and then when she's called away she's just like. anyway i was never actually a princess or a mortal being from this dimension and we're never gonna see each other again, sorry for the existential crisis, bye!
and anyway i think she has a similar deal in the life series. like, everyone else is there because they're trapped in the Torment Nexus, gem is there because she wants to be.

I might just be overreacting but I’m so tired of people having no empathy over any of the characters but one. Because once max (who I love and adore) get a sympathetic storyline where she gets left out suddenly she’s the best friend in the world that can do no wrong at all. I also see a lot of people blaming the girls when adults don’t actully do anything to help them.
Or how Ginny had such a tough season with everything but when she’s clearly not in a good place at all and made some bad comments she’s suddenly all evil.
Or how Abby someone who we have seen struggling with an Ed,alcohol and drug problems, and many form of self harm, say mean comments fuelled by resentment, anger, and maybe not even realizing those comments effect max’s feelings, she’s the all evil.(also a similar thing happened in season two with people saying abby needs new friends so the switch up is why I’m pointing this out)
These three specifically seem to get passed around like a joint on who to hate and love at any given time. They are complex and there teenagers that are living really messed up lives who are not well mentally. So stop saying one is better than the other. To be clear these are my favourite characters and I love all of them especially because of there complexities.
It’s fine to say this character deserves better but you don’t have to wish death upon another character because of that (except press and Gil they deserve it), I just think we can talk about the situation more as a whole instead of one pure perspective of it. For a show that wants you to look at everyone’s perspective a lot of people surely miss the point.

by the way can I just say how much I love Hirano's hair. more specifically, the way Harusono-sensei draws Hirano's hair because her skill is most obvious on him
like it Looks like it Feels like hair. do you get it? like yeah he's a little bit anime with how much it sticks out and he's got the ear tufts but!!! in other series you'll pretty much never see the ear tufts get tucked back, but with Hirano we DO!! And when his hair is wet or he's sweating or he touches his hair, the way it bends and moves feels so REAL, like. his hair DOESN'T look like a glue-sprayed wig just holding it's shape all the time no matter what. it's impacted by the environment!!!!

One similarity between Jonathan and '24 Thomas I'd like to point out is the "unclean" scene.
Jonathan saw and experienced all the nastiest most vile parts inside of vampires, and when she declared herself unclean and when holiness itself burned her he loved her despite it all, and resolved that if she became one of those monsters he would follow her. Thomas also saw all the horrifying darkness in Ellen, and when she too cried out that she's unclean he like Jonathan said that she's not and that he loves her.
I mean... I don't think these scenes are really all that similar - and again, this is to do with characterization, because on the surface level, they do follow roughly the same script. They're both extremely significant to the dynamics between Jonathan/Mina or Thomas/Ellen - but more so as a juxtaposition.
Mina believes herself to be unclean and damned because she has been bitten by Dracula and is indeed at risk of becoming a vampire as well; and as you said, Jonathan vows to join her in that cursed undeath. It is an expression of beautiful, intense, blasphemous, extremely gothic devotion, and it defines their relationship throughout the story.
By contrast, Ellen believes herself to be unclean because of her own psychic ability - because she was the one who woke Orlok in the first place. Thomas does try to reassure her, he tells her he loves her; and he is trying his best, but this reassurance ultimately falls flat for two reasons - 1) he cannot convince her that she is not unclean, because that perceived "uncleanliness" is an inherent part of her, rather than something foreign; and 2) he wants her to eventually be free of it, which she cannot ever be - because, again, the horror is a part of her.
Unlike Jonathan, Thomas is terrified of that horror. He does not recognize it as a permanent aspect of Ellen, and he ultimately is incapable of making the same vow that Jonathan Harker did; and this limitation is crucial to the undercurrent of that scene, because it is the reason Ellen lies to him about her final plan. Mina trusted Jonathan and co. enough to openly ask them to end her life in the event of turning, but Ellen makes the arrangements with Von Franz in secret, before sending her husband on a wild-goose chase. She cares about him, yes, and he cares for her; but he does not love all existing aspects of her. He would not be able to accept her if she turned. Their goals in life, their desires, their perspectives are fundamentally incompatible, and so the only thing she can do for him is leave him behind.
Thomas may have good intentions and a similar choice of career, but he's no Jonathan. It's not exactly his fault, it's just that he's really not meant to be a Hero. He's a Damsel in Distress and he's being forced into the wrong role entirely by a patriarchal world - the existence of which only Ellen appears to recognize.

no no you guys don't get it. the x files cancer arc was, excuse the pun, a fucking white whale of a tv plotline that would not have worked nearly as well on literally any other show. it was a complete hail mary. the writers' room nearly didn't make it happen because they were worried it would fall too deeply into soap opera territory. and on any other show, it would! but the x files is about four key things: mistrust in the government, faith in both science and the otherworldly, building a life around trauma, and the fine line between love and codependency. it is the only show where the entirety of this situation- a government experiment on an unwilling young catholic leads to a terminal illness that is counteracted by a literal scientific miracle in the eleventh hour due to her partner's refusal to accept her impending death- could both happen at all and happen well. none of the themes in the cancer arc were new to txf at all. they'd all been lurking, to some extent, in the background since the pilot. the cancer arc wasn't merely milking a left-field catastrophe for the drama, it shoved the overarching themes of the show to the front and said look. look what these people are to each other. look how impossible it is to face the darkness alone. regardless of when the plotline was conceived, it was always going to happen. it was the only way the story could have ever gone. they were always doomed from the beginning

The other thing that I think I would want in an Annabeth Wayne AU that I don't think I've seen so far is Bruce being absolutely pissed at Athena.
It was bad enough with Talia and Damian, but Athena is a literal god of wisdom who should know better AND he doesn't even have the "culpability" of having slept with her.
She one hundred percent saw Batman, tactician of the Justice League, was drawn in by her aspect of the Goddess of Strategy, and proceeded to create a child without his consent, a daughter who she didn't even raise before the child became a weapon.
And like whatever else, however fucked up Damian was by his own training to become a child-weapon, at least Talia loved Damian.
Whereas Athena loves Annabeth in the way a Goddess loves, not the way a Person loves, and I don't think Bruce, whose entire identity is so fixated on his relationship with his own parents, would recognize that as love at all.
And, like, Talia put Damian through a lot of shit. I think Bruce would be angry there too. But when push came to shove, she at least at some point brought him to Bruce because she thought it was in her son's best interests.
Athena actively lead Annabeth away from Bruce and into the streets at the age of seven, which Bruce would never see as in her best interest, whatever Athena's godly perspective is, however badly he reacted after Jason's death, even though he couldn't see (and dismissed the idea of) the spiders and the monsters. She was seven. In the streets of Gotham.
Athena let Annabeth fight a major role in two wars back to back without being there to train her or protect her or love her or even advise her. Athena advocated for the cold blooded murder of the other children who had actually tried to keep his daughter safe. Athena sent Annabeth against Arachne when Athena's children have universally died on that quest for a thousand years.
Athena let Bruce think he had gotten Annabeth killed because of his own inability to handle his grief. Let him think his daughter was dead or worse for years. Would have let him keep thinking that if the Fates didn't have other plans.
And just, in true fashion for all of my ideas on a PJO x DC crossover, everyone really comes out more traumatized than before. This includes Bruce.
Because now he wasn't just used unknowingly for a child just once, but twice. And in both cases he's going to have to live forever with the guilt of not having been able to protect his kids from what their other parent wanted to make of them
(On top of all the ways he has directly failed them and made any complexes worse, of course )
#bruce wayne#annabeth chase#annabeth wayne#athena#pjo x dcu#dcu x pjo#again I have to reiterate that I actually do think Athena loves her daughter#I just think that to a human a god's love is inevitably going to look cruel#because they don't and can't love in the same way#giving your child opportunity for Kleos and sending them to a teacher is a love to a goddess#whereas a human parent might never want their child to fight or suffer at all#and even with Bruce's whole Batman and Robin situation#he a) still felt guilt and went back and forth over it multiple times#and b) he was at least trying to guide them and accompanied them into the field and deliberately tried to give them whatever tools they#needed to be both moral and safe#Athena doesn't see a difference between what she did and Bruce's crusade but he absolutely doe#this post is obviously very much more Bruce's POV of course#Athena would have her own but I am biased#'love the way a goddess loves not the way a person loves' - but Rev aren't the gods people#Not fully#I don't think they can be; they're too vast#Behind their personalities they're all personification#so yes and no but not enough#as for bruce reacting badly after Jason's death#I generally don't think he *hurt* her which I've seen some choose to write based on him hitting Dick#but someone in fic wrote a HC that he blamed her at first bc she knew Jason was sneaking out and didn't say and I took that and ran with it#& after his initial outburst he freezes her out bc his anger scares him & he thinks keeping her at a distance will protect her from that#not knowing that she's already internalized that guilt AND already felt prior to this that Bruce was abandoning her in favor of being Batma

Oh no. Don't let me start plotting out a Leverage Redemption / Moon Knight crossover. I don't need more wips. Help.
#IT WOULD BE SO EASY THOUGH#like fucking up someone who's collecting or trafficking stolen antiques has been. multiple leverage episode plots.#guess who steals back stolen antiquities from the black market & associated private collections to (mostly) return them? layla#there are So Many oh shit we have to change the con moments you could do. just layla showing up alone#at least someone on the crew - eliot and parker probably - would recognize someone who's known to have pissed off the black market in cairo#and the scramble of how do we deal with her and how the mark will be reacting to her being here#and if we go post mk s1#then it's OH SHIT SHE'S A SUPERHERO. SHE JUST FLEW OUT OF HERE. OKAY.#breanna pulling up cell phone footage on youtube from the cairo incident like holy shit#she's the scarlet scarab. oh this makes so much sense now of course.#hardison comes back because no way they get into superhero shit without him#(various commentary on past superhero encounters here. hardison has probably tried to hack avengers tower.#sophie probably has conned tony stark in the pre iron man days#eliot has fought aliens he's had some sort of interaction with shield for sure)#harry gets to be delightfully bemused and also the stand in for all of us who have lost track of the five million mcu projects.#i know the avengers i think which one did you say this one was? is she new?#and then you get the wait what about thor - the norse AND the egyptian gods?#if layla is working with mark and steven you then also get them which would be fantastic to bounce off the leverage crew#and if you want to make everyone's life more complicated#set it in a situation where mark and steven (and layla) know m&s have a third alter but have not worked out how to get on speaking terms#and this situation winds up dangerous enough that jake fronts and goes moon knight to save their asses#and like. marc and steven get to find out from a bunch of people they just met that#yeah we saw the third guy#and uh. there was some weird shit. are you sure you're done with your superhero god shit.#so they have to deal with THAT#probably to have stakes like that itd be something like there was something from the chamber of the gods that one of harrows followers took#like the ushapti of another god or something similarly powerful and dangerous#and you have the oh shit of it being something with that kind of power and danger like. right as it's gotten away from them.#squire in a cupcake van#let's go steal a squire

Man, I really hate seeing comments like "Jentry was being such a bitch to Kit how could she 🥺" like she didn't just find out that she wasn't born with these destructive powers that have made her the target of dangerous demons;that the person she trusted the most had been lying to her all her life; and on top of that she was sixteen
