Zeta Prime as the 13th Prime is admittedly unusual.

Conceptually, the 13 were initially meant to be an intentionally vague group shrouded in mystery. It wasn’t until the Bay Fallen that the Primes began being fleshed out as a group more, with The Fallen, Alpha Trion, Liege Maximo, Vector Prime, Prima and Maccadam chosen to properly be members of the group. To fill in the gaps and explain other series concepts Onyx, Solus, Nexus, Micronus, Amalgamous and Quintus were created.

That left one unaccounted for.

Aligned tried to be cute about, by dubbing them “The Arisen”, another Prime like The Fallen whose name was stricken from history, but unlike Megatronus, The Arisen was highly regarded.

In actuality, the 13th was Optimus.

Perhaps a decades late overreaction to 80’s kids horrified at Optimus dying, and Rodimus as such not being embraced, Aligned opted to make Optimus so special, so meant to be a Prime, he WAS one of the 13.

This … isn’t exactly a popular idea among fans, as it greatly lessens the appeal that Optimus EARNED his position, rather than he simply already WAS Prime. This probably is meant to tie into the Dynasty of Primes concept from the movies that was fleshed out more in the IDW movie comics. I think it worked better there because it was just a one off thing, and Optimus didn’t even believe he was Prime, and was too humble to accept it.

Aligned would explain it as Optimus sacrificing himself on ancient Cybertron and being reborn into Orion Pax, minus his memories. TFP and RiD15 would mimic this… multiple times, having Optimus live up to being the Arisen, but that this specific cycle keeps happening makes me think the Arisen has a thinly disguised fetish.

Other media like Forged to Fight, Cyberverse and IDW would also use this concept to some extent, the simplified version being the 13th Prime is the one that was destined to truly bare the Matrix. Everyone else was just keeping it warm for him.

This typically means Optimus, except for Prime Wars where Rodimus, Optimus and finally Optimus Primal bore the Matrix, with the Boss Monkey being Optimus Prime’s true successor while Hot Rod was in a coma after being overshadowed by Unicron.

IDW saw Optimus use the religious colonists’ belief in The Arisen as a political tool to ensure Cybertron, Earth and related planets stay United. The Arisen was also one of the ancient tribal Primes, though we never got a proper look at him. Shockwave, having gone back to the past, would say Optimus truly is the Arisen, but the matter was intentionally left vague and never addressed.

Forged to Fight leaned more in the original Aligned concept, where The Fallen immediately recognized Optimus as the 13th, but Optimus has no clue what he was on about.

Cyberverse tries to split the difference. Optimus is marked as the 13th Prime when he dies in the Robo-Robotnik universe, and joins the Matrix. In the main universe, Zeta Prime is implied to be among the 13 Primes, as a power mad Starscream names several Scraplets after them.

Because of TFONE looking to greatly simplify things, the somewhat complex idea of the Arisen was tossed aside in favor of sticking Zeta Prime in the role instead. Not to mention Orion being preordained to be Optimus doesn’t fit at all for the story the movie is trying to tell.

But who is Zeta?

Well…

He’s more a concept than a character. He doesn’t really have a preexisting counterpart from Marvel or Dreamwave to give us an idea of what he’s like.

His origins seem to lie in the WFC game.

While his colors evoke Marvel and Animated Sentinel, it appears there was conflicting ideas on what his name was. The game studio declared he was Zeta Prime, while Hasbro insisted he was Sentinel Prime, with ultimately the character becoming “Sentinel Zeta Prime”. The game still calls him Zeta nonetheless, with ancillary media describing him as a former, fiery military officer who lost touch with the robots he represented. He was responsible for chasing off the Quints and ushering in the Golden Age with the various Colony Worlds until the Rust Plague happened, forcing the Space Bridges to be shut down. That seemed to mark the downfall of Zeta going forward, as he was also the Prime that retained the Quints’ oppressive caste system that Megatron (and Orion Pax) rose up against.

Hasbro’s insistence he was Sentinel persisted in the Covenant of Primus, where his younger self resembled TFA Sentinel Prime, along with having an association with the Elite Guard.

This connection to Sentinel is semi referenced in TFONE, as Zeta was the first Matrix barer, with a power hungry Sentinel shooting him dead and eagerly tearing into his chest to claim the Matrix. Perhaps this was meant to be a meta gag on the writers’ part, with Sentinel going “I’m the guy before Optimus, not you, ya pompous poser!”

The only other Zeta that we know of is from IDW, a significant Prime that like Nova Prime, influenced a lot of the lore.

Initially he looked like this.

Your typical IDW “OC”, with him eventually donning on armor that became his standard look.

I swear someone on staff at the time clearly liked Digimon, because that is straight up Seraphimon.

It even had the loin cloth sash thing.

Other artists would Roboticize the design, making the Seraphimon influence less obvious though.

What this version of Zeta Transforms into is never specified, but with IDW original villains tending to favor flying machines, I’m going with a jet.

Zeta and Orion Pax were former students of Shockwave (pre-emotionless cyclops), both being seen in having greatness to being a Prime. Zeta became Prime after Sentinel’s “death”, fulfilling Shockwave’s desires. Zeta would become Orion‘s teacher and friend, but like Megatron, Orion would notice Zeta increasingly slip into megalomania, the stress of the early Great War against the Decepticons growing, feeding Zeta’s own lust for power. The mask finally having slipped, Zeta Prime used a “Vamparc Ribbon” in an attempt to wipe out the Decepticons or any form of rabble rousers, nor particularly caring who or what the ribbon sucked the Energon out of in the process. Orion and Megatron saw fit to team up against a mutual enemy and destroyed him, though the Great War waged on regardless.

TFONE Zeta Prime visually draws inspiration from his WFC counterpart, though simplified and a bit more ancient looking. While the character model is clearly blue and gold, the in movie model looks more dark gray-ish to me, somewhat evoking Liege and Prima.

We know very little about him, though as he is worthy of carrying the Matrix, clearly he wasn’t at all like his psychotic IDW counterpart. Perhaps the stand out thing is Zeta is the first Prime to carry the Matrix here, as that usually goes to Prima. Presumably this is a vestigial nod to the old “the 13th is the true Matrix barer”, as Optimus later is the only other Prime to carry it, completing the reference. Despite this, the Primes wax on about Orion’s bravery and self sacrifice to protect his friends and expose Sentinel, dodging the preordained Optimus thing.

A notable fan theory states that Optimus’ axe on the finale might be donated from Zeta thru the Matrix, as he too carries an axe as his signature weapon.

This seems to suggest that on top of needing to simply the Prime concept, perhaps Hasbro is moving away from the concept of “The Arisen” altogether. It also implies, with the use of Zeta, the 13th can be anyone a particular story needs it to be, referencing the original concept of the Arisen being a “mystery” anyway.

I think what bugs me more is The Arisen feels like a reinterpretation of Hot Rod’s chosen one role from the original movie and Marvel comics. Modern material is pretty dead set that the Prime lineage ends with Optimus, another instance of ignoring Rodimus.

But Hot Rod & Rodimus Prime fit this Arisen role so much better, due to the Marvel Comics better emphasizing Rodimus’ connections to Primus.

As Primus in his original form more heavily resembles Rodimus.

I would like to think that if the 13th Prime is free to be anyone, that some writers will take advantage of that and stick Rodimus in the role, where he reincarnates in the modern era as Hot Rod and arises once more as Rodimus Prime. It’d be nice to give Rodimus some respect for once, rather than being the whipping boy of angry nerds ala the IDW Deviations comic or, to some extent, MTMTE/LL. We got a better outcome in ReGen One, hopefully that can be replicated in a future cartoon or the Energon Universe somehow since Hot Rod is a major character in Void Rivals. Incidentally, Hot Rod exists in the One universe also, so if the story continues, maybe we could see TFONE Rodimus at some point.

As for Zeta, we’ll have to wait and see if future material keeps him as the 13th and if so, if they try fleshing him out more. Maaaaybe leave the IDW interpretation in the past tho’, or at least reinterpret the Vamparc Ribbon as both a Solus invention and a weapon of last resort Zeta doesn’t like using if we want to let him as the good guy.

could you imagine Tfo Elita meeting other versions of herself (Prime, g1, animated, ect), how do you think things would go between them?

Short answer: They all hang out and have fun, trading training tips and sparring together. They also talk about their respective friends and enemies in each universe as well as their versions of Optimus. Basically girl talk.

Long answer:

This became more of a loaded question than I anticipated given each continuity and what happens to each Elita lmao

I'm not including IDW Elita because I don't know her very well (and what I do know of, I doubt the others would get along with her that well)

I don't know ES Elita that well either, but know enough to kinda get a feel for her character. In regards to her and OP's relationship, ngl I'm ignoring the "it's complicated" line from the show. And I do not subscribe to the fan-favorite "they're divorced" interpretation. Instead they've just been married for so long they're in that comfortable stage where they don't show off how obviously in love they are unless it's in private

And while I thought it was funny to include TFA Blackarachnia just to have all the other Elitas be like ??????? I figured it would be better to just have it be TFA Elita before she became Blackarachnia (because in all sense and purposes, she is a different character)

Anyways, here's more detailed scenarios that happen during the meet up of universes:

TFO Elita tries to play it cool, but really she's super stoked to meet all these other versions of her because canonically she is the youngest of the interpretations and therefore it's like if the little sister was allowed to hang out with her cooler big sisters

TFA Elita wonders why everyone else is pink while she's yellow/teal. She admits she was never really a fan of the color, but now she's reconsidering it???

G1, TFP, WFC, and ES basically trade war stories since they're the only ones that have fully known war. They also give advice to their younger counterparts since they're going to be part of a military operation soon in their universes

Everyone starts trash talking about Megatron and his goons (especially Starscream). ES awkwardly reveals after 10 minutes of ranting that Megatron in her universe is a good guy now and every other Elita is absolutely FLABBERGASTED

(TFO Elita wonders if that means there can be hope for her universe's Megatron, at least for Optimus's sake, but dismisses it)

They start talking Optimus and TFO and TFA Elitas are even DOUBLE FLABBERGASTED that every one of them is in some kinda of relationship with him

G1, TFP, WFC, and ES talk about their romances and how complicated things could be when there's a war going on, and then they trade embarrassing stories about OP before talking about how much they love him despite everything

There's lighthearted jokes that TFA and TFO may get with him in their future and TFA dismisses it because her OP is such a stick in the mud and she only sees him as a friend (but now the idea is stuck in her head, thanks guys)

also she might be dating Sentinel in that universe idk it's kinda implied but i don't like him so i'm not acknowledging it

Meanwhile TFO Elita deflects REALLY HARD. Like nope, she definitely is NOT falling hard for the guy who got her fired but then showed her what it meant to have hope and inspired her to be better to the point she'd dive into the abyss if it meant she could save him from falling, no sir, not her

When it's time to part they all wish each other luck and go their separate ways and for very angsty and convenient reasons TFO Elita sees the tragedies that befall all her counterparts and is devastated...but then realizes that ES's future isn't so bleak so she vows to follow her example and not get herself killed or face devastating heartbreak

Anyway like drawing Cyberverse again and it ong such yummy art rn I’m doing so well. Will be rewatching tfp while doing so because I am approaching a big assignment/exam thing where I have to write at least 10 pages and I chose to write about Transformers and history/politics :3 Me when watching tfp is literally studying. Already rewatched RID before that as well. Cyberverse is prob next on the list and then like aaaall the way back to G1. Beast wars is also high on the “want to rewatch” list. Recently rewatched Animated so I don’t think that one is too high on the “need to study” list. And then Earthspark may be something I’ll rewatch in the end? If not WFC: Trilogy or Prime wars. Prime wars is probably the one I have least memory on so eugh…I’ve watched all of these shows at least 3 times and here I am still rewatching them. Rescue Bots prob isn’t on my study list though since the premise in it is so actually far from all of the others and just- not related to anything I’ll be talking about tbh. And also none of the japanese shows (sobbing) because I’m writing in the subject english, and therefore it has to be about english media…(in my case specifically American ig) Might also want to study the g1 comics some more and the specifics in IDW. And MAYBE the mf bayverse movies…only if I HAVE to though oml...

I agree with your Starscream post! I do genuinely hope we get a redemption arc from him similar to Megatron. Like I get him being bad at first before transitioning to the redemption side to make it more progressive in his character, but it does feels like someone in Hasbro is wanting to stay the same formula without diverging it or it doesn't have the chance like in IDW1 when things were cut down to move onto the reboot which I recall being disappointed since it felt like Starscream had something but ultimately...nothing did. Atleast to my knowledge

I want to see Starscream working through his issues with the other seekers, maybe explore their dynamic. Maybe give him someone like Alexis to help him. Have him realizing his narcissistic traits & difficulty navigating them.

But I think Cyrak would also be interesting to bring back for him, because is a lot of potential there. I find it interesting that female characters seem to bring out a lot of qualities in him in a lot of canon media, I hope I worded this write & didn't make it sound bad ;w;

Yeah I totally get that vibe when it comes to Hasbro, and not even with just Starscream himself. They've wanted to take shows in directions that the creators don't wanna go in and ultimately results in the show's cancellation. They pushed for Animated to align with Bayverse and DWJ didn't want that even though the Japanese dub did just that. I hear the same thing happened with the third season of TFP, and I swear it had to have happened with EarthSpark as well. So many others have said it but season 2 doesn't even feel like it's part of the same show.

I love the idea of bringing Cyrak in though to give Starscream more history other than the typical backstory with Jetfire that's always referenced but never really expanded on outside of that one episode in G1. It'd be great to see more of things like they did in Armada and IDW; to go outside of 'Megatron has fallen! I, Starscream, now lead the Decepticons!' and try something new. Even for just one single show. Heck, look how they spun Jetfire from his typical scientist persona into this great hero warrior thing they did with Cyberverse.

It's never wrong to shake things up a bit by taking characters in new directions. Gotta test the waters somehow, but I completely agree with you. :)

If Blurr really does get just enough time to send them to Swindle before the end in idw and if this universe somewhat mirrors idw canon

In IDW Swindle dies, basically, well before when Blurr would. And then is brought back by the other combaticons.

Because they miss him? Maybe? That’s what Swindle’s led to believe initially. But there were always other reasons and more to it then that.

So then Blurr — would he be the only one that had missed Swindle just for being Swindle and for being gone?

And then his last words to Swindle being “I’m gonna miss you” take on a whole new layer of meaning.

Because that’s it. This time Blurr’s gone. And Swindle would know by this point what that means. Blurr’s gone. Forever.

Not dead. Not permanently. But forced to move on in a way that is in some ways worse. Because their separation — the distance between them is now permanent.

If I remember correctly Swindle was resurrected because he had valuable information. Like. Combaticons cared for him at a certain level yes but they mostly needed what's in his head.

So yeah. Swindle I imagine would be very attached to someone who values him because of him. Not because of what he has to offer.

And. Well. Now they have the infinite amount of dimensions between them. Because Blurr never ends up in the same world twice.

Also I think we need to just bullshit our way through all kinds of imaginary IDW-like, Animated-like, Tfp-like AUs because I don't want to spend all the time on wiki checking for specific timelines of every continuity haha

EarthSpark Season 1 Finale Retrospective (from someone who hasn't seen every single TF show)

(I'm not too sure how to format text posts but whatever)

Spoilers for Transformers Earthspark (obviously lol)

I finally had enough time to finish season 1 of Earthspark, and though I loved the finale, there were just a few things I think it could've improved on.

1. The ending was too easily solved, we had that HUGE buildup of the machine that could kill anything with energon in its body, then it's just reversed 2 minutes later? The finale would have generated so much hype and appreciation for the second season if it ended on a cliffhanger.

2. A few of the plot devices didn't make very much sense if you REALLY think about it. For example, once the Autobots arrive at the Malto's home to save them from ghost, why didn't they take off their ghost badges? They clearly do not associate with ghost anymore, why were they still wearing the badges? And even after that, when the Terrans and Bee defeat a mind controlled Elita and OP, why didn't they remove their badges? They saw that the badges are what caused them to power down at first, and it's safe to assume that once Elita and OP awoke from the Terrans defeating them, they'd still be under mind control. (Unless this was specified in the show and I just missed that)

3. This is minor, but where did the cassettes go? Surely Soundwave would've freed them, right? Also where is Tarantulas?

4. When Twitch and Thrash were on the tower fighting Mandroid, they knew that the cybersleeves were powering the energon machine thingy, why didn't Thrash just free the Maltos while Twitch distracted Mandroid? (Unless that's what he was trying to do originally, I may have missed/forgotten that)

Though I do have complaints, the finale had so much good in it

1. I love how Twitch and Nightshade were the main two Terrans, their personalities work so well together.

2. The camerawork and animation is amazing, the blend of 3d and 2d works so well in the finale and it looks phenomenal.

3. The reference to the hanger fight from previous episodes when Twitch propelled herself with her cannon was perfect, I love that she picked that up from Megs.

4. Overall it was an amazing finale, and though I still do prefer Cyberverse and TFP to Earthspark, the second season could steal my heart.

Speaking of season, here's a few things I'd love to see in the 2nd season of Earthspark (Obviously not every single one, that'd be a bit too cluttered for a single season)

1. More characters who (in canon) who changed sides (during the war) such as Jetfire and Drift, I'd love to see the dynamics of a reformed character showing their perspective on the past.

2. Add the DJD, they would be perfect for Earthspark, since in IDW, they hunt down Megs for changing sides, they'd be perfect since Earthspark Megs changed sides. I just want to see Earthspark Megatron be held responsible for his actions during the war, and would love to see Megs explain more of his previous ideals and tactics.

3. Give us more time to address the stuff that happened in the war, since we've seen people talk about it, but we need to SEE it, with characters like Starscream addressing the insane shit that happened within the cons ranks. (Similar to my previous thought, lol)

4. More classic characters being MAIN main characters, like give us more Arcee or Wheeljack. (This could be fixed with spotlight episodes)

5. More character spotlight episodes, we need to explore individual characters, especially the now freed Decepticons. I'd love a Shockwave, Soundwave, or even Skywarp spotlight episode. (Also where did the cassettes go? They should've been freed during the finale)

6. Possibly introduce Quintessons since this show loves Quintus Prime so much, and if they don't do that, introduce some of the other Primes.

7. Because of how progressive the series is with its representation, introduce Knock-Out, finally canonize Breakdown and Knock-Out's relationship in a show (I know it's canon in IDW), instead of just implying it like in TFP.

8. Have the second season focus on developing characters and introducing new ones, have the second season be a set-up for the third, and build up the antagonist through pre-existing characters. For example, using my Tarn/DJD suggestion, have an episode where Megatron reveals the DJD has found his location, and have him explain what the DJD is, and why this is an issue. Or with my Quintesson suggestion, have Quintus Prime give the children a vision of the Quintessons and warn them about their approach, then have the children ask what the Quintessons are.

9. This show could introduce Unicron, but honestly, a plot following the effects of the war would be better, though a Unicron plot is always welcomed.

10. Expand the Terrans more, they all share the same enthusiasm, and just feel a little too similar. I'd love to see Twitch become more pessimistic after all the insane stuff that happened in the finale, show her being affected after nearly being killed, watching her family "die", and having to mature so quickly, show Twitch being weary around Megs after nearly being killed by him under mind control.

Onyx Prime is one I have a semi complicated feeling towards.

The Prime of Beasts, and borrowing his name from an obscure Beast Wars character, he’s meant to explain why some Transformers have Beast Modes. It’s not … super clear if this includes the various Mechanimals like Laserbeak and Ravage, or Cyberverse’s various menagerie.

But presumably it does, as that would mean the deer bots seen in ONE are related to Onyx too, as they’re the only non Prime Beast Moded robot. ONE Airachnid’s toy gives her a space spider Beast Mode, but she only turns into a space helicopter Vehicle Mode in the film, so it’s unknown if she’s a Triple Changer or if her Beast Mode was an early script idea.

ONE Onyx, like Alchemist, Quintus, Micronus, Vector, Nexus, Prima, & Solus, doesn’t really get to do anything except die by the hands of Sentinel & the Quints. His Cog is donated to the main heroes, but who got it isn’t clear. I think Megatron did because of his beastly nature at that point, but I also think it fits Elita pretty well.

His design is a hybrid of his IDW and Aligned designs, taking more from the IDW design with the colors and beast kibble.

An interesting quirk is the ONE design borrows heavily from the semi confusion of his IDW design. Oynx is supposed to be a centaur, but IDW artists opted to have him stand on his hind legs, with his fore legs dangling awkwardly.

This would be turned into foreshadowing, to imply Oynx wasn’t what he seemed, revealing that he was actually Shockwave due to comic book time paradox reasons.

The awkward posture was due to Shockwave wearing Onyx’s corpse like a Pretender Shell, being unable to copy the original centaur look. Hilariously the ONE design foregoes the centaur look altogether, but nothing has clarified on if the centaur is his actual Beast Mode, or if he turns into a different creature in a BM Savage Noble fashion… His TFONE model implies he might Transform into a space dragon, or if we want to meet half way on the centaur idea, a space griffin.

As such, Onyx’s only major role has been IDW, and it technically wasn’t even him. The actual IDW Onyx was a kind shepherd who Shockwave killed after landing on prehistoric Cybertron following his failed Dark Cybertron scheme.

Pretending to be Onyx, Shockwave guaranteed events on Cybertron played out as he knew them to, as well as raising a Beast army (from all the Beast Wars characters in their most unflattering role) and securing the mysterious magical Talisman as part of a new scheme involving Unicron.

It’s always bothered me though that the one place Onyx would’ve fit well as a central antagonist would’ve been RiD15 because of it’s heavy use of animal type Decepticons. It would’ve made more sense if Oynx was the one orchestrating the crash of the prison ship, but Steeljaw makes Oynx’s mission his own: to turn Earth into a home world for Decepticons, rather than beast bots. Oynx isn’t exactly nice here either, causing problems for the Autobots, because he has a chip on his shoulder over vehicle type Transformers due to problems from his past. Something like that might’ve been better than hyping up The Fallen, causing the same problem TFP had by using Unicron too soon.

With the upcoming CyberWorld possibly returning to a RiD15 Beast theme with its Decepticons (while the Autobots remember they have more Dinobots besides Grimlock), maybe Onyx Prime has a role there?

So glad you asked, the monster from "A Monster Calls", a bunch of the Cenobites(all of them, but half of them are on Smash cakes, the other half are on the Hear Me Out), While SOME of these exclusions include ones where people OUTSIDE your fandom would need to hear you out, anyone who would know the character enough to ask and doesn't need to means they shouldn't be included. Otherwise they're not fun for anyone to Hear about and have no purpose. If you're doing it with just friends, these rules do not apply because your friend group may not be your fandom but when posting online then you have to assume your audience is in EVERYONE OF YOUR FANDOMS. Creating a characterisation for Howlback is fun because not a whole lot is known about her, and what we do know about her is sometimes a bit contradictory, because she is usually one of those "blink and you miss her" characters and one of her most plotty appearances was in Recordicons, where she showed up as both normal and SG versions, but where everything is also a bit of a joke.

So, part one,

What We Know About Howlback in (various) Canon(s):

Howlback's first appearance was as an e-Hobby collectible toy released only on the Japanese market in 2005. This toy was not associated with any Japanese manga, anime or radio play. They just decided they wanted to release a new, cool cassette cat. At least Glit got to be in KP, even if he was only in the manga and never in the radio drama! But Glit didn't show up until 2007.

She was a redeco of G1 Ravage in blue and her partner, Garboil, was a redeco of G1 Laserbeak. They were sold as a set. She was the captain of the Cobalt Sentries, the public safety wing of the Decepticon military/secret police.

We are told that she has multitracking missiles and an energy barrier that allows her to absorb and redirect energy-based weapon attacks. This is called the "Feedbacker Shield" and the word Howlback is actually a word for audio feedback.

Some of the interesting things about Howlback are:

she carries herself with an aloof and "elegant" air and is a bit of a stone-cold killer

she's frequently trans (in one unnamed universe, she was built male and transitioned socially but not physically to female, per Vector Sigma; in the Marvel universe she was assigned neuter at creation and decided/figured out that she was female)

she is the first MTF transformer who gets to be normal about it

she has a sense of fair play and dislikes being ganged up on

David Willis thinks she's Renee Montoya, at least in SG-Verse

In at least one universe, Arcee knows her well enough to have a good opinion of her, possibly because they are both trans ladies

In the TFP verse she was once partnered with Barricade, which has got to have been hilarious given the size difference. (You know that in VOS this probably means they fucked at some point in time because in VOS it's absolutely canon that she is a worse size queen than Ravage and the other cougaraiders put together. ESPECIALLY since he was a gladiator and she was a bit of a pit bunny.)

However, neither she nor Garboil (it's not said in TFP whether she and Garboil worked with Barricade together, or separately) liked working with him enough not to ask for a transfer.

In the IDW 2005 universe, she was a prisoner at Garrus-9. This is especially interesting given that her original toy version carried a very detailed map of Fortress Maximus' vulnerabilities.

After escaping from G-9, Shockwave tried to trade her to Tarn for his own life, which I've always thought might be why @polyhexian (I think) once wrote her as a DJD reservist.

Her other officially produced toy was produced for the Bumblebee movie, even though we didn't see her in it. It was a redeco of Titans Return Ravage, which meant she got to have wings.

She worked for Clench in IDW 2019 (can this girl stay away from gladiators? no. no she cannot)

She was one of Ravage's clones in the Transformers tabletop RPG, where they misgender her. Instead of a cassette alt mode they give her a humanoid robot root mode. (Of course we also get to see Ravage with a humanoid robot root mode--albeit, cat-headed--very briefly in one of the IDW 2005 comics, which isn't surprising, given that in the IDW 2005 comics there is no evidence whatsoever that cassettification is a natural alt-mode rather than a punitive forced reformat, like empurata.)

Part Two:

Howlback in Voice of Stanix and adjacent fic (Primax 1020.27 Iota) canon:

So, if you've read my fanfiction, you're probably aware that Howlback, Ravage, Stalker, Glit, Stripes and Pounce were experimental models produced by crossbreeding an extinct predacon with a Quint-era "entertainment" model. Garboil, Laserbeak, Buzzsaw, Squawktalk, Sundor and Wingspan were produced by crossbreeding an extinct predacon with a Quint-era small fighter plane model, and they were created in cat & bird pairs designed to work together. The bird was meant to scout and guard the cat, who was meant to do infiltration and psych ops, because according to some of Ravage's earliest G1-era technical specifications, she was supposed to have been incredibly intelligent and meant for infiltration and spec ops, even though they rarely showed this in the cartoon.

Originally I thought they were all the same age exactly but I've come to infer based on their behaviour and personalities that this probably isn't the case; some of them seem markedly more mature than the others at the time at which the experiment was decommissioned and the mecha sold off under the table for costs. I'm guessing that because they were predacons they had to be allowed to be sparklings for a little while and couldn't just be built completely at adult size.

Ravage and Laserbeak are actually one of the youngest pairs. The oldest ones were Pounce, Wingspan, Howlback, and Garboil.

Just as Ravage, Stalker, Buzzsaw and Laserbeak were sold to Ratbat, a major investor in the project, and Glit and Squawktalk were sold to the family that produced Starscream and Pharma and sent to look after Pharma while she was in school in Iacon (which is how they ended up with Ratchet, who got them in the disjunction), and Sundor and Stripes were sold to the Primal Censor (which is how they ended up with Blaster), and Pounce and Wingspan were sold to an Urayan brothel (which is how Pounce ended up becoming Leozack and Lyzack's mom), Howlback and Garboil were sold to....

Iaconian Metaforensics.

This is how Howlback got mixed up in the clusterfuck of weird situationships and relationships that existed between Arcee, Prowl, and Tumbler (Chromedome).

Ironically, even though Grimlock was formerly involved with Arcee, who sired several Dynobots who weren't his brothers on him, that's not how she met him. That happened as a result of her work with the Decepticons and her gladiator "problem". Grimlock's past relationship with Arcee was much longer ago than that, and dated to when she and her brother Galvatron were still sort of on good terms.

(Grimlock is way, way, way older than Howlback. He felt bad about it once, but not for very long, because she was already banging Prowl when he met her...)

Prowl taught Howlback how to be a cop. (In point of fact there are some very uncomfortable parallels between Sentinel/Tumbler/Prowl ==> Prowl/Howlback and Terminus/Megatron ==> Megatron/Ravage that I didn't realise until I wrote the end of Every Day Is a Winding Road. Right down to the part where Megatron thinks he seduced Terminus and Howlback...probably actually did seduce Prowl. There is also a very hilarious parallel between Prowlback and Agent Cooper and Diane that is only incidentally @breakdownsbuttlights' fault...)

On the other hand Howlback is aromantic (but not ace) and Ravage is very definitely not aromantic, lol. Howlback has become attached to several of her sexual partners but there is absolutely no romance/limerence/idealisation there whatsoever.

(I'm not sure cougaraiders are ever ace. If they are, it's in later generations, because none of the original six were.)

Grimlock/Howlback, like Vos aka Forestock/Leozack, was not a ship I planned. I knew that she remembered him from Garrus-9, if only because Grimlock is not a person you easily forget, but I did not realise how deeply bonded they became during that traumatic time until I started writing Designs and Persuasions.

They were wildly sexually attracted to one another when they met before the war and incredibly drawn to each other as friends, to the point where he and his brothers and children fell rather quickly into the group of people Howlback considered family, and the point where even though she was furious with him when he worked for the Autobots, she did not write him off. Howlback is ride-or-die for her family (siblings), all eleven of them, even though she sometimes wants to throttle Glit when he's being overbearing and sure that he knows what's best for everyone. That is her job. And Pounce's job. They are the big sisters. (Unlike Ravage, she would still speak to Stripes if she could.)

Prowlback was always intentional, lmao, but they were always using each other, even if they were friendly about it in the beginning.

One of the things I most assuredly identify with Howlback the hardest about is that she has principles deep down inside of herself but she isn't always really sure what they are until she finds out. She probably cares more about "fairness" in the objective sense than I do, maybe, but I'm also not 100% sure. On the other hand she is 3000% more self-sacrificing than I have ever been in my life, lmao.

Howlback, incidentally, had issues with Overlord going back to the gladiator years, but I think I won't spoil that for you if you haven't read about that.

What else did you want to know? I promise not to take a year and a half to answer this time, the last two years have been a bitch--my brother got cancer, and then he got better, but Trump won the election, and then our mother died, and I've been a little unhinged.

Garboil has been Howlback's partner in...crime fighting, anyway...since forever. I wish I knew more about him. He has very little to say. I know Tumbler messed with his head. Perhaps I will find out as I finish the fic. Recovered Light is not done, Year of the Cat is not started, Quintessential isn't even plotted except that I'm sure you can guess what one of the plot points will involve.

(Oh, and fun fact: the Dinoforce are related to Howlback, but I won't say how because it has only been hinted at--by Deathsaurus, in Winding Road--in the text of the story.)

Thank you for providing me with the opportunity to Talk About Transformers, I will take it graciously and with extreme amounts of vigour and rambling!

Under the cut because of the aforementioned vigour and rambling.

To answer your first question: I'm largely into the IDW (2005) comics, Animated, and Aligned (TFP) continuities! I've also started watching the original G1 cartoon and Cyberverse which has been really fun!! (I'm absorbing so much information. I'm also idly keeping up with the new Skybound comics, which have me yelling screaming crying etc.)

As for characters... I would say I have no favourite/s except I do also own 1 (one) Transformer and well. for something that basically turns into a brick, he gives me immense amounts of joy.

But yes, other than Soundwave, (who has charmed me in every continuity I've seen so far!!) it's a constantly rotating roster because there are SO many characters to think about (which differ from continuity to continuity!!) and I am having the time of my LIIIIFE!!!

It's so funny going from UT/UTMV to TF because UT fans have a lot of focus on Versions of Literally The Same Two Guys, whereas TF has an overabundance of options to pick and choose from (I love both!!! I just think it's very funny in comparison whfjfbek)

Anyway, I am a big fan of a lot of characters from IDW and particularly MTMTE because they're all a bunch of little FREAKS and I love them. But! If I had to pick a few from there, I'm particularly fond of (in no particular order) Drift, Whirl, First Aid, Ratchet, Swerve, Brainstorm, ALSO NAUTICA I love her dearly!!!!

I'm also a Tarn girlie at heart u_u I am not immune to "big bad dude with a mask and a sexy voice just so many problems". Also I have a special place in my heart for Spinister and Pipes rhfjfbejfbk (I love the Scavengers [similarly, a bunch of little freaks] and Pipes makes me SO SAD. WAIT- ANOTHER CHARACTER THAT MAKES ME VERY SAD: IDW SUNSTREAKER. (He was my first taste of the Horrors of the IDW comics and that STUCK with me)

Similarly, I think the Constructicons (+Prowl in IDW) and Combaticons have SUCH fascinating dynamics hjsjkhksjdfh,, combiners got me going crazy... I NEED to find out more about the other combiner teams. It's a fascinating concept.

As for other continuities... Animated has me sick over Blurr, Shockwave and Swindle, and... well, Optimus has intensely kissable lips in this series. Why did they make him like that. I'm also very fond of TFA!Starscream- he was my favorite back when I watched the series as a kid and it was very fun seeing him with fresh eyes LMAO

Fun fact: TFP was a large part of what got me to actually sit down and check out Transformers but... I actually still haven't watched the series itself (つω⊂* ) I just saw TFP!Soundwave and went "OH okay, I love him and need to find out more" which quickly expanded into me going on a deep dive into Transformers, and resurfacing about a month later having read all the IDW 2005 comics and about an equal amount of fanfic for various continuities whfjgbjrbfk,, BUT even though I haven't watched it yet- TFP already has me hooked on Knockout, Ratchet (and Soundwave ofc LMAO)

And the last answer; unfortunately I don't have any TF OCs (ᴗ_ ᴗ。)........

I have many Thoughts but haven't put together any designs because I want to get better at drawin mechs before I jump into making my own! Hopefully that way I have a better idea of how to put em together LMAO. That being said, I Am in fact plagued with ideas!! Like!!! I'd loooove to take a crack at trying to put together a sailplane/glider OC!

Or!! A pair of mechs, one whos an imaging satellite and the other a telescope! (Real starcrossed lovers type deal... both meant to only watch from afar, both longing to be in the other's place/by their side)

I also have a tradition of making sonas that have wings but can't fly, so I kinda want to make a TF sona with a similar concept- either just with good ol doorwings, or maybe a flier with a messed up gyro which causes problems staying upright in the air 🤔

Hmmm, I assume the difference between IDW and TFP is that IDW was made to be drawn in 2D. They are designed specifically for being "easier" to draw, otherwise IDW's artists would've died from exhuastion. TFP only requires one or two models that each animator shares. This means they can be incredibly complicated and no one has to worry about redrawing each detail every time. They also have a lot less cubes, leaning slightly more on the robot side of mecha rather than the more cartoonish, human-like mecha that transformers is known for

OH OH ALSO I just looked up the TFP concept art for Wheeljack and I LOVE IT AAAAAAA. He's just so cool heheheheh! And I have posted some pictures of my figures, but that was about two months ago. I haven't posted any pics of my car toys though. Only recently did I retrieve them from the dismal abyss known as the toy bin. Hold on, lemme take some pictures of them together! >:3

If I'm being honest, the main reason I finished in 2 hours was because I've been super busy with school so I have a pretty narrow time window for creative projects. Was hit hard with inspiration while studying and my brain nearly combusted, so I pracitcally ran home to slap the idea down. Even I'm surprised, I don't usually work that fast lol

FIRST TF SERIES: Transformers Prime. Was the only thing I used to watch on Netflix when we got it in the family, since when I had been younger and I had seen the first episodes air or regular TV, I had never gotten the chance to watch it fully

FAVORITE TF SERIES: Transformers Prime takes first place... Then there's Transformers Animated

WHAT GOT ME INTO TRANSFORMERS: Alien mechanical beings with a culture lost and a war to continue... Need I say more? Mostly the fact that they were robots tho

FAV AUTOBOT: They used to be TFP's Ratchet and Wheeljack, but now they are Autobots that I first read about in IDW's MTMTE, with them being Whirl, Rodimus Prime and Fortress Maximus. I have very confused feelings about Prowl

FAV DECEPTICON: Soundwave. In all interpretations of him except TF Animated. Then there's a deep love for IDW's and Armada's Starscream, and huge respect for the way IDW'S writers made Shockwave's character OP in the 2005 timeline. The Scavengers from MTMTE also have a special place in my heart, as well as Megatron's redemption arc

FAV NEUTRAL OR OBSCURE CHARACTER: I have always interpreted Cyclonus as a neutral character, so in my opinion he takes first place... Lockdown from TFA is a very close second

SHIPS/FAV SHIPS: I do not ship characters aside from their already canonical ones, I'm afraid I'm a bit boring when it comes to that... Perhaps Starscream and Windblade, as well as Starscream and Bumblebee (always IDW 2005 timeline). My favorite canonical ship has to be Cyclonus and Tailgate (I usually headcanon Whirl also being part of it, like an undeclared Amico Endura or something...)

BEST THEME SONG: TFP's for nostalgia, TFA's for rythm

SADDEST BETRAYAL: I frankly don't know, the saddest thing for me was the death of a character itself, not how it happened... Perhaps the "saddest" one was Breakdown's momentary betrayal of the Decepticon cause when he and Bulkhead joined forces against MECH in TFP, because that "betrayal" may have actually helped him find a new faction with less demanding leaders... At the same time no matter how you look at it it has sad consequences, because if he truly left then Knockout would have been livid and turn really bitter. On the same terms, Starscream's decision to leave the Autobots after he'd wanted to join them in Armada, and Starscream's last stand against Megatron in that same series (something which is not really a betrayal, but it still detaches him from the Decepticon forever, if that counts) are also really sad. I'm really not sure if these count, but to think that's sad I look at the types of betrayal that include "leaving a faction" because for millions of years said faction as been a Cybertronian's only community and all thay fought for, and the causes and consequences of leaving or wanting to leave are often tragic

CHARACTER I WOULD KILL IF I COULD: TARN AND OVERLORD. NUFF SAID.

ROBOTS I SIMP FOR: Sometimes Soundwave. TFA's Lockdown (don't look at me like that). Starscream and Ultra Magnus in 2005 IDW.

CHARACTERS I WOULD GO TO BRUNCH WITH: Nautica, Chromedome, Rewind, Rodimus Prime... I would go with the whole Lost Light crew or the Scavengers but oh well...

CHARACTERS THAT DESERVE A FREE YEAR OF DEINKS AT MACCADAMS: ALL OF THEM GENTLEMECHS, THEY'RE ALL TRAUMATIZED WAR CRIMINAL BABIES

FAVORITE OBSCURE FACT: No obscure facts. Obscure plot points and dark backstories yes. I shuddered when I read about IDW's concept of Empurata, and when I saw Sunder... Also I do not like to think about where exactly the Insecticons ended up in TFP, did Airachnid drink them all up?
