Begonia Rex, unknown variant, after and before
Probably one of my biggest success stories. I was walking through Home Depot back in 2022, and saw they had a bunch of begonia rexes on sale. This little guy was shoved underneath a table, wilting, and clearly dying (probably due to lack of light/being shoved under a table). So I figured he'd make a fun project. I didn't expect him to live very long. The bottom picture is a photo of him a day after a good watering and adoption.
The top picture is him currently, roughly two years later. He's huge. I actually need to repot him soon, because I can barely get a watering can in there to give him water. He's got beautiful curled leaves that are a mixture of green and chocolate. Definitely one of my favorites.
Care below.
Begonia Rex, also known as King Begonias and Painted-Leaf Begonias, are a member of the Begoniaceae family. Unlike their garden varieties, rexes are often kept for their foliage. They do bloom, but it's rarer indoors, and some growers recommend actually pinching off blooms so the plant doesn't focus any energy on them. There's a wide variety of cultivars in different shapes and colors -- almost 500!
Caring for the plant is relatively easy. They like bright, indirect light (no direct sun). They can be grown in standard houseplant soil you can purchase online or from any gardening store. Wait for them to partially dry or for the pot to be light and water them deeply. They can get dramatic when lacking water -- don't panic, just give them water and they should bounce back within a day or two. They prefer a humidity around 50% and a temperature around 70F/21C.
Begonias can be propagated in two different ways. You can propagate them traditionally -- cut at stem, throw stem in water, wait. Or you can grow them from leaf cuttings (shown here and here). Personal note: I have never had the leaf cutting method work. I have not yet tried the water jar method with these, but a good article comparing the methods is located here.

PINK CHARMING
Specifically, I drew baby pink charming begonias because I think the little leaves are so cute! This is also a type of Rex begonia (also known as king begonia), funnily enough!
I'm a sucker for pink, so this one was a BLAST to make- and the pink heart clasp came out so cute!

i’ve gotten to the point in keeping houseplants that they just keep making copies of themselves. “i just want one rex begonia” i said, like a fucking fool
like on one hand they’re not dying and i’m glad that using greenhouse principles for houseplants works, but on the other hand, i’m running out of pot space
