i feel like people are sleeping on the occam's razor situation of how buckwild it is to outright accuse a guy of being a clone of your friend even if you DO have a lot of circumstantial evidence. there's other options is what im saying. they could just be like. a guy. that's a sensible deduction. you should explore that deduction. ignore my shirt that reads I <3 RED HERRINGS.

Time Travel is my favourite trope and I think we need more fics where both Obi-Wan AND Qui-Gon time travel together because no matter when they get sent it's chaos. They're saving the galaxy and being physic flash-bangs to everyone around them.

The entire council is baffled to watch as Qui-Gon 'never taking a padawan again' Jinn has suddenly cut off his post-Xanatos depression tour to return to the temple and beeline to the creche with a frantic energy. His wild eyes immediately single out a fluffy, red-haired initiate.

"You." he exhales with a pointed finger, slightly ominous as he towers over the child. Said child starts vibrating with delight. "Me." he agrees, launching himself at the man. Qui-Gon drops to his knees with a thud that cannot be healthy. Obi-Wan's attempts to clamber into Qui-Gon's robes and maybe onto his shoulders is thwarted by the fact that Qui-Gon's massive hands are cupping Obi-Wan's tiny squishy cheeks. He stares at the initiate for a few minutes with an intensity that is starting to worry people.

Finally, "You're so small." Qui-Gon sounds like he might cry.

'What the fuck?' Plo Koon projects at Mace.

"I'm 9! That tends to be the case!" the child chirps back.

"You're nine." Oh. Ah. Qui-Gon's eyes are distinctively misty. He squishes the boy in a hug so hard he squeaks. Mace makes a series of gestures that imply the need for a head-scan. Depa obligingly drifts off towards the halls. Qui-Gon scoops the child up onto his hip and claims him as his padawan on the spot. The assorted council members and creche-masters burst into noise. Mace tells Depa to bring some space ibuprofen as well.

Anakin is a little apprehensive of his place in both the order and Obi-Wan's life, but then one day Obi-Wan wakes up and is suddenly a lot less sad in the force?? In fact, if Anakin didn't know better he'd say he was almost giddy, but he's watched Obi-Wan try to pretend his world hasn't fallen apart for the past few months so it can't be that, right? And um, Miss Bant? He knows grief is a funny thing that affects people differently but he's pretty sure 'massive mood swing' and 'having full conversations with invisible people' is not...great? and you said to tell you if Obi-Wan got really weird in any way.

Anyway after a lot of medical exams, intense consultation with the archives, and a couple exorcisms, Anakin ends up being raised by his 'real' master and his ghost master. He is far more well adjusted emotionally and far less well adjusted for what counts as normal people behavior(not talking to thin air). When questioned on this, all he ever says is that he's talking to Qui-Gon. Isn't he...dead? Well, yes. Wait, he's a ghost? Ghosts are real? ...Well this ghost is real.

This starts a great number of existential crises among non-force sensitives and incredibly heated theological arguments amongst the Jedi. Whenever Obi-Wan is questioned on this, all he ever says is some variation of "the force got to know him for 5 seconds and kicked him back out." Mace backs him up on this even though that reasoning is technically blasphemous. Qui-Gon is having the time of his un-life. He's ascended to his final form, his sheer existence is a heresy, this is truly all he has ever aspired towards.

the Clone Wars?

The minute they get dropped back Qui-Gon immediately goes and haunts the shit out of Dooku. They have a signed terms of surrender and promise of info on the Sith Lord within the year. Only half of it is because Qui-Gon's giving Dooku complexes that are only perceptible to shrimp, the other half is because they now have a ghost spy that is not bound by the laws of physics nor spacetime.

Obi-Wan only nominally pays attention to this as he immediately goes and implements his 19 step seduction plan with Cody (he had to focus on something on Tatooine to pass the time). It fails. Spectacularly. Publicly. Ah right. Tatooine was not exactly the height of his sanity. Everyone in the GAR and temple is now riveted by High General and Councilor Obi-Wan Kenobi's attempts to go on a date with his Commander, who bats him away him like a particularly annoying stray and seems one bouquet of cactus away from committing mutiny. Anakin is worrying if it means his master knows about his secret marriage and this is some sort of really weird power play. (It is, but not in the way he thinks)

The next time Dooku goes after Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon spends a good few months appearing tear-stained at the edge of Dooku's perception and only communicating in terrible wails and discordant mutterings of 'padawan. my padawan. my little one.' 24/7.

"Wait, you're annoying Dooku into surrendering?"

"Oh no Anakin, we're crushing his psyche like a bug. :)"

I'm sorry but the irony of Nico calling Max unprofessional is sending me so bad like sir there's an entire garage full of people, who were literally in the trenches trying to survive the Brocedes fallout while just doing their jobs, who might have a few things to say about your (& Lewis') level of professionalism at that time 😭✋️

Periodic reminder that unless a person specifically and clearly tells you it is okay to tell others they are trans or queer, you should err on the side of caution and assume they do not want you to tell people (especially random people!) about their transness or queerness.

You have no idea, generally, why somebody doesn't talk openly about their trans or queer status, and you have no idea, truly, how somebody might react to that information. The most progressive person out there is still capable of harbouring incredibly negative thoughts about somebody's queer status.

In the vein of calling out our favs I'll tell you what Max did:

Max was racing in an iRacing event yesterday

Also racing in the same event is Jaden Munoz who is a Williams driver for their iRacing academy. Jaden is 19 years old iirc

Jaden was a Max fan and there are multiple tweets of him from 2021-2022 praising Max

Max and Jaden started close to eachother at the beginning of the race and were battling for the lead. Max was ahead. Max defended very aggressively, honestly too aggressively, and made two left-right manoeuvres to hold the lead. The contact would not have been so bad but Max was swerving and he dropped right to the back of the grid the moment their cars touched while Jaden kept his position

At this point Jaden says: "Look how dumb he is. He doesn't change, ever. He's so dumb" about Max. This is not a random insult, contrary to the way it was framed. Max had crashed Jaden out 2 weeks ago in the first lap of the 2024-25 GTP IMSA Global Esports Championship season finale. I think it's very important to point out that Jaden was leading the GTP IMSA championship and that was the last race of the season. He would have won it if Max hadn't crashed him out. Max was completely at fault and received a drive-through penalty for that collision

Back to our race from yesterday, Jaden drives a great race and keeps 2nd position

Towards the end of the race Jaden encounters Max again to lap him. The moment he sees that Max is the next car to lap he says "Oh no. Oh no, no, no." Implying that he thinks Max is about to crash him out as retaliation. And that's exactly what Max does: he purposefully crashes out Jaden.

Now we get to the only part of the story that anyone seems to care about which is Jaden's reaction when Max crashes him out which was: "Yeah, I knew it, I knew it. This is why you were gifted everything in your life, Max. You're a spoilt brat. You'd be nothing without your father. You'd be nothing. You'd be a nobody."

That's the totality of what happened. Since then Jaden has been getting a lot of hate on all his social media for saying Max is a spoilt brat who would be nothing without Jos. Honesty had it been anyone else besides a 19 year old Mexican-American kid I wouldn't have written this up. But as a Mexican-American experiencing Trump's Amerikkka I think the reaction towards Jaden is fucked up and unwarranted. He's a teenager with working class parents, gaming is literally his career. He was going to be champion two weeks ago and Max crashed him out, there was clearly residual resentment from that. The prize money for iRacing is probably what Max spends on a dessert in Monaco but again it's Jaden's career, it's his whole job, it's how he makes money. He anticipated Max would crash him out and then Max proved him right. I don't think it's the crime it's been made out to be for a hispanic 19 year old to bitterly point out that Jos was a millionaire who helped Max progress in his career. Again Max is a fav and maybe I'd feel a different way about this if the political climate was different but it just made me very sad and very bitter

Basically my whole deal with the pretty/ugly/normal Snape discourse is the fact that people behave like Harry is flattering Snape for some reason, build fanon assumptions on that belief, and then behave like those are book canon and the only correct interpretation forever and ever amen.

if Harry calls Snape's nose hooked and prominent – it probably doesn't mean it takes up 70% of his face (people behaving like "hooked" and "huge" are the same word make me kinda tired), if Harry says Snape's greasy hair hangs in curtains around his face – it probably doesn't clump in icicles, if Harry calls his teeth uneven and yellowish – they probably aren't extra crooked and rotten and of a bright yellow colour, if Harry points out his skin is sallow and pallid and white – it probably isn't of greenish shade and with acne, if Harry tells us Snape is thin and haggard – it probably doesn't mean he looks 25kg underweight. Believe it or not, but Harry doesn't actively try to embellish the man he hates! He rarely uses any extreme language to describe Snape – and that's what bugs me when people insist he must have extremely unusual features, because even a pretty lookist boy who hates the guts of him and is ready to misinterpret him at any given chance, is actually being relatively mild. If Harry could debase Snape more – he would!

Harry calls Pancy ugly too, but Rita, for example, thinks she's pretty and vivasious, and I know it's assumed Rita is exaggerating because she and Pancy are both awful people, but Rita wouldn't publically call a girl that objectively had a face very unfitting to beauty standards pretty, especially when it's so uncalled for! Pancy must've looked at least somewhat cute so that it doesn't sound like a mockery.

Severus probably "wasn't pretty" to Harry's taste – just like Eileen, whom he greatly resembled, but he also didn't look extremely out of the ordinary and wasn't repulsive to look at, just tired, a bit unkempt and with intense traits (which can be handled in a whole lot of different ways of course). Enough so that people who hate him can make some derogatory comments on him, but honestly, go to any visual based social media and look at people who receive derogatory comments on their appearance out there and tell me that all of them (if any) are unbearably ugly and barely human looking.

So basically erasing Snape's traits and giving him a straight nose or full lips or rosy skin is misinterpretation just as much as exaggerating every feature of his to the extent that never was even remotely mentioned in canon (and especially since we know we have a negatively biased perspective almost at every instance) is. And it's fine, especially if we talk about art, when artist's style would naturally enhance certain aspects and try to deliver different messages. Some prefer to draw more standardized faces or softer appearances, while others tend to give their characters strong, stylized features and make them visually challenging – and this is all great and good and valuable. It's also fully okay to headcanon different traits for the character, both recognised as attractive or unattractive, depending on how each person wants to interact with the fandom. My problem is exclusively with people misinterpreting the book text, claiming it as canon and saying what people can or can't do with characters based on those misinterpretations.

So I couldn't decided today between a scene from Chapter 5 of Changing Tides or a snippet of a Theomar piece I'm working on for the Gala but then remembered porque no los dos? Both under the cut for length, first up is Odile encountering someone with far from wholesome intentions:

It’s while she’s here, face shifting from smiling to a look of mourn over her supper, does someone speak to her, seemingly concerned. 

“And what has you down, darling?” When Odile looks up from the bits of white fish and carrots swimming amidst the cream broth, she isn’t expecting to see what she does. Not expecting to see the tall figure leaning against the wall of the Inn, the gold thread of his purple coat glimmering under the light. Now closer to her, she can see they look enchanted as well as expensive, whatever fabric it is made of is one which she’s never seen. Likely something fancy and foreign, fitting in that he is an Altmer. Golden hair to his shoulders, skin like that of brass and piercing amber eyes. 

“Oh nothing, I’m doing fine.” A drought of self-confidence hits her and she wants nothing more than to sink into the floorboards. The navy robe she wore for the journey was frayed, patches in the elbows to cover up the wear; it had been her mother’s before her. Procured at a stall in Chorrol when she first came to Cyrodiil. It covers up my pants at least, she thinks. Even more worse for wear as they were the ones she wore for chores around the house. While packing  in the early morning, it didn’t occur to her to dress well. Though all of her clothes showed visible mending, there were some better than others. A green dress she sewed with fabric they traded for, a few linen tops she embroidered herself; items far better than those she brought. No point in worrying about that now.

It would seem her answer is not convincing when the mysterious stranger, the second mysterious Elven stranger she’s come across, tells her so. 

“You certainly do not look, nor sound, okay.” Pulling the barstool out, he flags down the Innkeeper. 

“Red or white?” He asks her. 

“Oh I don’t have the money… at the moment.” Offering the latter half to divert away, never feeling embarrassed for her modest living until faced with the exact opposite. 

“Well, I do. Red or white?” Odile smiles, heat rising to her cheeks at his words. 

“White, they are sweeter.” 

“That they are.”

And next is Theodora thinking about what to do for the Gala with her loser mer husband of 9 years yearning <3

Whereas choosing who to embody had been easy for him, albeit not a unique choice by the sea of pointed crowns around him, Theodora hadn’t been so sure as to what she wanted to wear. 

“Should I dress as Akatosh? That feels the most fitting, that’s probably what is expected of me.” 

“But you embody the dragon every day, my love.” Gently his hands stroked her shoulders while she stood in front of the mirror. “Though if that’s what you want, it is not possible for you to be anything less than stunning.” The smile he catches in the mirror is perfect, so wide and genuine, nothing compared to the feeling of having her smile at him. Capturing the attention of the most sublime being in all of Nirn. He kisses the top of her head, on the grey hairs that were making her shine like starlight. Few in number they were yet, it did not stop her from vigorously plucking them when she first discovered the change. A fear of growing old but beyond that, a fear that somehow he would no longer want her; only at this would he tell his wife she was wrong. The sands of time could not be stopped so she had conceded to let them come and Ondolemar took it upon himself to let her know she only became more beautiful as the days marched on. Theodora clutches his hands, bringing them across her chest and cranes her neck to look up at him. 

“Ceri suggested I dress as Mara, she says Mama is as perfect as Mama Mara.” He softly smiles against her hair, another quick kiss. 

“She is very correct but we already knew she was smart.” 

“She is. Mara could be good…” Breaking from his hold, she goes closer to the mirror now, her reflection showing she is in deep thought.

“You do not sound so sure, do you have another idea? Anything would be lovely.” She smirks. 

“Even Talos?” A tired sigh fills the room. 

“What have I done to deserve that?” The crinkles on her nose form as she smirks. 

“Be so easy to torment.” 

“You do so enjoy doing that.” And she could keep doing it, a small price for the life they have now. 

“I do,” quickly his wife turns around, approaching him and planting a kiss on his cheek; a suitable apology. “I was actually thinking Dibella.”

More than 19 years ago, I moved cities to start university. My mum gifted me these two cotton reusable shopping bags.

This was 2006 and even in Aotearoa this was ahead of the curve for sustainability (or greenwashing, if you like). There were earnest columns about them in the Listener. I am old enough to remember when sustainability was about putting 7 items in each plastic single-use supermarket bag...

Anyway, many years later. The previous government banned single-use plastic shopping bags. We're now doing meta analysis studies on whether it's better for The Environment to use paper, heavy duty plastic, cotton or single-use plastic. I keep seeing people grieving their cotton bags because they are unsustainable. - Like no your forty-eight cotton bags are not inherently a problem, the issue is you have that many. Newsflash, overconsumption of anything is unsustainable, if you never change your consumer habits!

All these commentaries paint cotton bags in a negative light stating you'd have to use the bags hundreds of times to outweigh the damage done by it over its lifetime, vs the single-use plastic bag. 173 times seems to be the current thing. I saw one study claiming you'd need to use it a thousand times.

As if that's impossible? As if that's even somewhat unlikely??

I've had these things for almost 2 decades! Even if I only used them only once a week, it's literally been one thousand weeks. (and I've definitely used them more often than that: I wore them instead of handbags for a year, circa 2011, telling everyone I was into reusable bags before it was cool).

I've fixed them each multiple times already. I just went to remove the handles off this one for yet another fix and accidentally ripped the front panel. I thought "had a good run ig"... But nah i have only used this bag a thousand times, it hasn't outweighed enough plastic fucking bags yet eh!

I'm going to fix it again. I'm going to get weird about it.
