2. A book that was difficult to get into, but turned out to be good.

I read Life Under Compulsion by Anthony Essolin this month, and... it's basically a teardown of all the ways our current culture is deeply estranged from what it ought to be, and how that damages our lives, so a bit heavy in places. :P I think it's a good book though. Very vivid, very sound, and his descriptions of good culture are very good. (There's a whole page about what "home" is that I almost took a picture of and shared on Tumblr, because it was on point.)

3. A popular book that you love.

I think many of the things I love are popular, honestly! But for recent books, the Hunger Games series. I disapproved of them automatically when they first came out, but on coming back and actually reading them ten years later I found I loved the themes (love, sacrifice, treasuring the humanity of others) and the characters.

I don't think I would have appreciated them that much as a teen, but as a young adult I can look at Katniss and Peeta and the rest and admire their virtues while also feeling for their weaknesses.

6. A book with one character that stood out from the rest.

Had to get up and stare at some bookshelves before I could answer this... I know I have others, but right now I’m thinking of Wizard of Earthsea. I really loved Vetch in that book (I’m a sucker for supportive best friend types) and was very disappointed that he wasn’t in any of the sequels.

7. A book that left you feeling overwhelmed with happiness.

Hmmmmmm.

I can’t think of one that left me Overwhelmed, per se, but you know what’s a good satisfying book? The Long Way Home by Margot Benary-Isbert. Or The Ark, by the same author.

(They’re both about German kids post-WWII, although one follows a teenager forced to flee East Germany for America and the other follows a dispossessed and partly separated family in West Germany. Both end with homecomings, which is one of the best ways to end a story.)

30. A fictional book that taught you about/increased your interest in a real-life subject.

There are so many historical fiction books that fit this description! Like, I'm definitely not saying you should rely on fiction for a comprehensive or unbiased view of history, but I do think that reading historical fiction--especially in childhood--is a really good way to build up a broad base of general knowledge. (See the last question, for example!) And fiction written in the historical period, or by people who lived through it, is even better.

It also applies in other areas, though. Specifically, the little I know about sailing all came from the Swallows and Amazons series and Patrick O’Brian’s sea novels.

I've been in two minds whether to ask you something about Islam and women. It's quite a sensitive issue and I ended up asking chat-gpt instead. Now that I said that, I feel obliged to say what it was about. It's to do with funerals, I worked for a number of years at a cemetery and I saw first-hand how different cultures and religions carry out the ceremony. I just didn't want you think about such a depressing subject. Basically, the women stayed some distance away during the Salat al-Janazah (funeral prayer). I learnt quite alot, specifically that different traditions and cultures have differing practices.

I'd rather discuss positive things, like the way some of our oldest institutions are making it much easier for Muslims to pray three times a day now. I visit a large garden called Kew Gardens and they have a prayer room. When I worked as a gardener, a Muslim worker had to just find a quiet space behind a few trees to kneel down and face Mecca. I was pleased that no one treated him any differently and respected his requirement to pray during the day.

Hmm, There are many Muslim sects since there are differences of cultures and different commentary about things that were left uncertain. I'm in the Hanafi sect, one of the sunni sects in Islam. But the sect you're talking about is different than mine, so it's 5 times a day for me. Even though it's obligated, Allah still finds the little but often made prayers sweet and heartwarming.

About the funeral prayer, since this prayer is made outside, we women would stay behind the men praying. It's safer for us to pray while being inside. It's not about gender inequality or something, it's just that we feel a bit exposed when we pray outside

That issue of people being judgemental against praying people is slowly being fixed by time and I'm glad people are finally realizing islam is not how they assumed it to be or pictured it to be

I was going to go to bed but I saw you'd replied and couldn't leave you hanging, especially after describing your less than successful romantic endeavours.

It's sad, but no matter how much effort you devote to a crush, if they have feelings for someone else, all it takes is a look from them and they quickly divert their attention away. I guess it's better to find out early on if they don't care for you, sad as it is.

I agree with everything you say. Not just because I'm submissive but you speak alot of sense, especially around feminism being manipulated by men.

Have you seen the movie 'through the olive trees'? It's unlikely you have, because it's Iranian but you may have done. I watched it about 20 years ago and I remember being struck by how attractive one or two of the women were, fully covered up just through the sound of their voices, their accent and what they said. So, yes it's bullshit to say sex appeal requires women to reveal their bodies. It's more cerebral than that.

There's a song by Julian Cope, an english singer called 'freedom leaves you free of the need to be free'. I guess, if we fixate on being 'free', we're following another person's definition of what freedom means and so fall into a trap. I think Bhuddists understand this too. Attachment to any idea or concept isn't the way to be free, for them.

I can't thank you enough for teaching me about Islam. I'm not likely to convert (I'm an atheist) but I respect all religions and there's alot of misinformation and fear regarding Islam in my country. The city where I live has a Muslim mayor and he's doing a pretty good job but I've met some people who hate him just because of his religion. They fear muslims taking over the country. Ridiculous.

'The Eternal Refuge' is quite different language to 'The Saviour' as Christians see Jesus. I guess it implies you can go to Allah for help without feeling so guilty. Do you discuss your problems with Allah in your mind, as part of prayer? I like that a king can sit next to poor man and be 'brothers'.

I have a book on Sufism but haven't read it yet. A couple of famous english musicians converted to Sufism, I kind of like the way they recognize that distractions get in the way of communicating with Allah and the way they deal with this is through repetitive chanting/movement. I don't know what your take on this is.

My youth. This is quite boring and cringe so feel free to skip this section! I was, still am quite shy around the opposite sex, I went to an all boys school where the main focus was on academic studies.

Does it make you feel small and humble inside, therefore closer to God or do you experience comradeship being with so many muslims under the same roof? And yes haha, a lot of prophets that are in different religions exist in islam too. Yes, Prophet Mohammed (S.a.v) is our last and most important prophet so usually in educational sources which doesn't have details only include this part.

In Qur'an (our religious book), it states that every country, race, tribe and etc had been sent prophets to teach humanity about Allah's existence (in Islam, Allah is God btw). To add, these prophets weren't holy beings, they were just normal humans like us who were chosen by Allah. There are a lot of prophets and since a lot of old religious books got changed, less known prophets were forgotten. The most known prophets of Islam are: Mohammed (s.a.v), Isa (aka Jesus), Yusuf (aka Joseph), Musa (aka Moses), Yunus, Ibrahim (aka Abraham), Ismail and more

Catholics and christians believe that Jesus is God's son. But us muslims deny that since there is a surah in Qu'ran (Surah al-Ikhlas) saying the following:

"He is Allah, who is one and only

Allah, the Eternal Refuge,

He neither begets nor is born,

Nor is there to Him any equivalent"

Giving the meaning that Allah is the only God and He doesn't have any children and He isn't an offspring of someone. And that He's the strongest, the wisest, the most forgiving, the Allmighty.

By the way, the pronouns "He/Him" that is used for Allah doesn't mean Allah is a male. Allah is genderless, we muslims just use the pronoun "He" because the closest genderless and singular pronoun in English is that.

To answer your other question, I can say both. Because whenever I'm in a mosque, there's this feeling of being content and thankful for everything I have. A warm and calm sense of joy fills me as I pray and get closer to Allah. Praying is basically communicating with Allah actually, there's only you and Him in this and it shouldn't be interrupted unless it's a must. Since a mosque is a publicly used place for praying, you will pray with others near you. There is no the superior or the lower in praying, meaning even a president or a king has the same value as a normal citizen. We muslims even call eachother' siblings of islam'

Calling our muslim female friends as 'sisters' and male friends as 'brothers' is common. "Brotherhood" is key in islam. Even if we don't know the person in front of us, smiling warmly at strangers is suggested since a single smile can lighten up someone's mood and warm their heart.

Our former prime minister was very rude about the niqab, referring them to post boxes. There was an understandable backlash against his comments.

I have western values, so my instinct is to support women's empowerment and freedom of choice. But I can see how this clashes with the concept of modesty.

I'm all for finding common ground between western values and Islam.

I worked as a gardener for a spell and I love the Islamic tradition of using water in the garden to create peaceful rippling sounds and movement. I'd love to visit Grenada.

I visited an Ismaili Centre a while back on an architecture tour and it has a lovely garden on the roof with 4 quarters. It's in the middle of a busy city but in the garden, you'd never know.

Further afield, I visited a hilltop village in india called Mandu which has a rich Islamic past. You can hire a bicycle and explore with hardly any tourists because it's so hard to get to from a train station. In another fantasy, I could be your tour guide and show you around. That would be amazing, serving your every need along the way, finding a quiet spot to have a picnic, obeying your requests, tipping the workers/key holders to let us in to see hidden gems.

Actually, the concept of modesty doesn't clash with women's freedom of choice. Because even if it's obligated, it's the woman's choice to get in or not get in hijab. For example, me. I'm not wearing hijab yet.

This doesn't only exist for women, but men as well. We just cover our body to drive less attention, lower the risk of unwanted gaze of people.

A lot of muslims can represent islam very badly, so let me shortly put it like this: Islam is never about women being opressed, never about women being obedient. In marriage, obedience, loyalty and respect is a must for both parts (wife and husband)

There are many islamic architectures in different countries I didn't see yet. But I would like to suggest to see the mosques in Turkey. Hagia Sophia Mosque (it's called Ayasofya here), Eyub Sultan Mosque, Sultan Ahmet Mosque, Grand mosque, Selimiye Mosque and etc.

Hagia Sophia Mosque used to be a cathedral, then it got turned into a mosque. The paintings on the marbles are so beautiful and detailed. Since it used to be a cathedral, there are paintings of biblically accurate angels, Prophet Jesus (yes, Jesus is also a prophet in islam)

I prayed there once, the experience wasn't so different than the other mosques but the fact that this mosque used to be a cathedral and is a museum material made this a more interesting experience
