How did you come up with all the different nicknames for all the different multiverse versions of characters? There's /so many/
Hi!
You are damn right, friend. There are a lot. but it’s either a lot of nicknames or a fuckload of confusion in the already fucking confusing space that is the multiverse. So I went with the former lol.
I’ve talked a bit about how I come up with nicknames here:https://deniigi.tumblr.com/post/187171967712/ if you’re looking to apply the logic (or lack thereof lol)
But if you want a breakdown of where everyone’s names come from, I can do that to. Most of them are pretty straightforward, thankfully.
Inimitable
Tats Spidey - he’s got tattoos up his forearms. He’s the only Spiderman with them.
Little Spidey - she’s the smallest spiderman (like, actual spiderman, not just a kid in a costume) Ini!Peter’s encountered and he doesn’t know her name for the first couple chapters of Inimitable, so he just calls her ‘little.’
S4/Bitsy - Playing off ‘itsy-bitsy spider.’ Miles is the 4th and youngest Spiderman to join the group.
S3 - Louis doesn’t have a special codename or nickname, so this is just his chat moniker.
Big Red - Inimitable Matt is one of the eldest of the Matts (he and B’s Matt are around the same age). When I introduced little Red in under fire, I needed to distinguish him from this guy, so Ini!Matt got to be ‘big’ even though there are plenty of other Matts bigger than him.
Blond Foggy/Mr. Nelson - Inimitable Foggy is different from the other Foggys in that he’s older, he’s married, he’s recently been sick with cancer and lost a lot of weight from that, and he has long blond hair.
ITSV - Miles’s Verse
Itsy - When I had Bitsy, this one came naturally. Inimitable Miles and ITSV Miles are the itsy-bitsy spider when they’re together. They’re the babies of their respective groups ❤
Blondie - The only blond Peter. (Makes shit real easy lol)
Dipshit/Asshole or Blue - The first two are just what Blondie calls his and Miles’s Wade. The others in other verses call him ‘Blue’ because he’s the only Wade that wears navy and black instead of red and black.
Little Red - he’s a younger, leaner, greener version of Inimitable Matt, ergo he is Little.
ITSV - Peter B. Parker’s Verse
B. - He’s the Peter with the B. he’s very proud of his B. He kind of suits having a single letter, since nothing really matters to him anymore.
Doc - This is B’s Miles. He’s called Doc because he’s very smart, but frequently very flat-toned and dry-humored, which makes him come off as grumpy. His characterization reminds me of Bones from Star Trek (who is the team medic) and he is currently going to college, majoring in sociology, so he’s more educated and philosophical than your average bear.
Red - I don’t have a set nickname for this Matt yet, but he seems to me to be a fairly solid, middle of the line Daredevil (pretty in line with canon, anyways) so I’m calling him just Red for now.
ITSV - Gwen’s Verse
Sammy - Inimitable Matt and Foggy have Sam, and Gwen’s Sam is like, a quarter of that Sam’s age, so baby Sam gets to be Sammy.
The Falcon/Sam-13 - So Sam-13 isn’t actually a nickname. He’s Captain America’s clone in Gwen’s universe and he’s the 13th clone. I call him ‘the Falcon’ as that is how he is referred to in the universe. It’s a little stilted, but whatever. It works. I have too many Sams in this verse.
DA Nelson - None of the other Foggys are District Attorneys. This guy has made it and deserves recognition for his service lol
Murderdock - This bit was also taken straight from the comics.
ISTV - Noir-verse
Benj - Noir Spidey gets a good, old-timey, classic moniker since he’s from an older time. That makes him Benjamin.
Lance Corporal - None of the other Wades care about rank, but this guy just came out of one war and is on his way into the next.
The Blind Devil/Mathieu/Maidiú - I needed a really solid boxer name for this Matt, and one that didn’t have ‘Battlin’‘ in it since he works with his dad in the ring. He needed something that was intimidating, but sporty enough to be stuck on a jersey and muttered in bars. The Lance Corporal, who speaks French, calls him ‘Mathieu’ because that’s how you say ‘Matthew’ in French. Since he’s second-gen Irish, he also uses his Irish name ‘Maidiú’ (*sometimes spelled with a ‘t’ instead of a ‘d’ and pronounced MA-tew, with a hard, short stress on the first syllable).
Leftovers
Agave - Andrew Garfield’s hair reminds me of a pineapple. It is bushy and tall and coifed. But that was too on the nose, so I went with a different pineapple-shaped object. The agave plant is basically everything a pineapple aspires to be.
Funsize - DFV Peter and Technicolor Peter are both the smallest Peters of the Into the Multiverse crew and they’re identical and, along with Tats, they have the Tom Holland base in my head (as opposed to the Toby or Andrew base). So Funsize gets to be the mini-candy snack version of Tats.
Shortstack - Shortstack is the other mini-candy snack version of Tats, but he’s less fun and more aggressive, so he gets to be the grimey diner version instead. Shortstack is kind of a condescending thing to call someone in the US (kind of like ‘half-pint.’ obviously this is just unless you do it affectionately, but if someone called me Shortstack my gut instinct would be to punch them on sight).
I hope this is enlightening!

Senior Soundtrack
Music is a love language.
Les dejo la playlist que construyeron conmigo, whether you knew it or not, de 2014 para acá.
PS: si no aparece su nombre en esta lista de canciones, lo único que quiere decir es que we have yet to share a song. Los adoro a todos.
Abarca
Burn · Lin Manuel Miranda You have the voice of an angel, and every time I think of this song I no longer hear it in Philippa Soo’s voice, but in yours.
Tuyo · Rodrigo Amarante Dancing Kermit.
Alexander
"Eungenio” Salvador Dalí · Mecano We love the music, hate the lyrics.
Na Na Na · My Chemical Romance Debate bus trips. Blasting it from the backseat, with Nesquik and cold pasta at hand.
I’m Not Okay · My Chemical Romance “¿Estos son los Rolling Stones?”
Being Alive · Stephen Sondheim Life’s dream: be Bobby. Not literally. That would suck.
If I Could Tell Her · Benj Pasek & Justin Paul You once said this is the song you would dedicate to me. Though I think we’ve grown past that, I will always remember how warm it made me feel when you said it.

I’m Low on Gas and You Need a Jacket · Pierce The Veil El concierto que más he disfrutado en mi vida (and that’s saying a lot), y parte de por qué fue porque fui contigo. Lloramos en esta canción y en el video que grabé con mi horrible teléfono se oye lo feo que cantamos.

Oceans · Frank Iero Remember when we were gonna see him in concert? :( Thanks for being the only person with whom I can enjoy weird throaty emo screamy shit. At least the guitar is good.

The Louvre · Lorde Remember when we played Melodrama in your bedroom? This is the song that I feel best captivates that: shoes on the floor, laying softly on the bed, sunlight streaming in through the window, the vinyl spinning, and a general feeling of levity.
No You Girls · Franz Ferdinand Friendly reminder of literally the worst physical experience of our lives. :))))
The Other Side of Paradise · Glass Animals The first GA song I ever showed you, which is a nice chain thing because it’s the first GA song I ever listened to that Jordan showed me. And a birthday vinyl we played in your room.

Beauty School Dropout · Frankie Avalon I am sorry pero literal I can only think of this song in your voice. Iconic!
Gracias por todo. Los quiero. Los voy a extrañar.

1997 Part Three
Ollie starts kissing his neck and Benjy drops his controller. He laughs when his boyfriend picks it up and places it in his hand.
“Keep playing.”
Benjy sticks out his lower lip “but I wanna kiss you.”
Ollie smiles at him and tugs at the back of Benjy’s white tank top, pulling it over his head and pressing a kiss to his collarbone.
“You can kiss me in a minute. I wanna see how long you can last playing the game with me distracting you.”
A thrill shoots through Benjy at that, Ollie’s light eyes suddenly quite dark.
“Um, okay...”
He hits start, and when his screen pulls up the beginning of the level, Ollie starts too. He settles on his knees between Benjy’s legs, kissing down his chest.
“You’re killing me.
Ollie laughs. “You’re so dramatic.”
Benjy watches as Mario flashes twice before falling off the screen.
“I mean literally. In the game.”
They both laugh but Benjy’s turns into a gasp as Ollie presses a kiss just above the top of his jeans.
“What are you doing?”
“Eyes on the screen, Fenwick.”
Benjy groans slightly but does what he’s told, his hands tightening on the controls when Ollie undos his jeans and presses a kiss to his erection over his boxers.
“Jesus Christ.”
His voice is too loud, it echoes in his room. Ollie pauses.
“You’ve got to be quiet, Benj. Unless you don’t want me to do this?”
“I’ll be quiet, I’ll be quiet. Please don’t stop-“
Ollie smirks at him from his position between his legs. It’s the hottest thing Benjy has ever seen.
“I wont stop if you don’t stop. Keep playing.”
Benjy takes a hand and cups the back of Ollie’s head for a minute, takes a breath, and turns his attention to the screen. Ollie keeps kissing him over his underwear, and Benjy heats him chuckle softly when he grows harder at the attention. Benjy lifts up his hips when Ollie starts tugging at his boxers and soon enough he’s naked, playing fucking Super Mario, and trying not to come right there.
“You get to the checkpoint yet?”
“Uh...yeah?” Benjy says, his voice shaking with lust. Without warning, Ollie licks a stripe up Benjy’s shaft, making him moan.
“Ollie...please-“
He whines before he can stop himself, forcing himself to keep his eyes on the screen. Ollie laughs softly.
“Did you just whine?”
“Um...no?”
“God that was hot. You’re so fucking hot, Benjy.”
A noise of need escapes him but he falls totally silent when Ollies lips close around the head of his cock.
“Oh my god-“
He tries to keep playing, his hands shaking so badly the control can’t keep still. Ollie lets out a breath close to a laugh and his hand catches Benjy’s wrist, gently pushing the controller away. It clatters you the floor loudly, but Benjy doesn’t even notice. His hands fist in Ollie’s hair and Benjy forces himself to keep his eyes open so he can take it all in. Ollie’s breath is hot and wet and his mouth feels so perfect-Benjy doesn’t last long. He watches in disbelief as Ollie swallows his cum and collapses against Benjy’s legs. Benjy flops backwards onto the bed, spent and soon enough he feels Ollie get on the bed with him too. “I didn’t last long”
Ollie picks up his hand and kisses his knuckles.
“That’s okay.”
“I meant in the game.”
Ollie laughs and Benjy lolls his head to the side to smile at him.
“That’s okay too.”
Ollie looks so beautiful just then that Benjy almost wants to cry. His hair is framed perfectly by the dark green of Benjy’s comforter, his smile coming to him easy. His smile that’s just for Benjy. He’s not in love with him, but for the first time, Benjy wonders if he could be some day.
“I’m nicer than you.” Benjy says, sitting up on his elbows. Ollie’s smile clouds with confusion.
“Oh yeah? Why’s that?”
Benjy slides off of the bed onto his knees.
“Cause I’m gonna blow you and I’m not gonna play games.”
Ollie’s laugh seems to get stuck in his throat as Benjy starts undoing his pants.
~
“Ollie did the FUNNIEST thing yesterday-“
“You never shut up about that kid.” Curt says, cutting Benjy off. “You a fruit for him or something?”
It’s Sunday, which means all of his siblings are there to witness Benjy turn bright red.
“No-“
“You never shut up about him. It’s kind of f*ggy isn’t it? You’ve got a crush, sounds like.”
“Hey man, fuck you.” Robbie says, almost spitting at their step dad, before Benjy can get another word in.
“He was in the middle of a story.”
“Robbie-“ Suki says, her voice dangerous.
“Ma, I’m not gonna let this dipshit you married disrespect my brother like that.”
“Robbie, cool it on the swearing maybe?” Jules says, her hands over Izzie’s ears. She catches Benjy’s eyes and smiles at him.
“What was funny, Benj?”
“Forget it.” He says, looking down at his plate. He feels Mack hit him with her foot but he doesn’t say anything.
“Ma, I dont understand why you got married again.” Leo pipes up, his mouth full of potatoes.
“I wont be disrespected in my own house!” Curt says, his pale skin flushing with anger. Drew laughs, nudging Robbie. “His house, you hear that? Hilarious.”
“Enough!” Suki shouts, causing everyone at the table to turn to her in surprise. She never raised her voice.
“Curt is my husband, and as long as you are in MY home, you will treat him with respect.
“That’s the thing Ma, I don’t exactly respect him.”
“Then you can get the hell out of my house, Robert Muhammad.”
The anger in their mother’s face is unnervingly palpable. Robbie sucks his head, his voice low.
“Alright, alright. I’m sorry.”
“He was picking on Benjy.” Mack speaks for the first time that night. Her hair has purple in it on the bottom, Benjy just noticed. “You never would’ve let that happen before. You wouldn’t let anyone treat us like that. Not before him.”
“Mackenzie-“
His sister pushes her chair back so violently it falls over, her fork clatters onto the plate and she stomps off down the hallway towards the back door.
“I’ll go.” Benjy says, setting her chair upright and following before anyone else can say anything. He walks out onto the back patio and sees his sister sitting beside the pool, her head in her hands. Benjy rolls up the legs of his skinny jeans and crosses the yard, sticking his feet in as he sits beside her. Wordlessly, Mack puts her head on his shoulder.
“I miss dad.”
Benjy hears the tears in her voice without even needing to look at her.
“I know.”
“You don’t, Bb-“ BB standing for Baby Brother, a nickname he’d only recently grown to like. Usually.
He inches away from her, hurt filling him suddenly.
“Just because I dont remember him doesn’t mean I dont miss him! Do you have any idea what it’s like? Living with fucking Curt? It makes me miss Dad so much cause like-I can almost see what it would’ve been like. But it’s not. Not even close. He’s such a dick. And you all treat me like I’m a stupid baby who can’t stand up for myself or-“
“Hey.” His sister turns to him and takes one of his closed fists in her hands. She rubs on the back of his palm until he starts to relax, just like she used to when they were little kids.
“You’re right Benj. I’m sorry. That wasn’t fair of me. I wish he was he here. God. He loved us all so much. You look like him the most I think. He would’ve loved that. He always used to joke that we were all Mom’s clones.”
Benjy smiles slightly, turning so he’s the one resting against his sister. He kicks his feet slightly and makes waves in the pool.
“You can come live with me.”
Benjy snorts. “Funny.”
He glances over at his sister and sees how serious her expression is.
“Mack. You live in a studio apartment.”
“We could make it work.”
“How would I get to school?”
“I could drive you.”
He thinks about it. He lets himself picture it. They’d drive each other nuts, but they’d have a lot of fun. He lets it go.
“I dont want to leave mom alone with him.”
“It’s that bad?”
Benjy shrugs. “I mean they fight constantly? About a bunch of different shit. It’s never gotten you know, physical-“
“I don’t think he’d still be alive if it did.” Mack says with a laugh. “Mom isn’t one of those weak people who stays with someone who hits her.”
Neither of them know it yet, but in a few years, Benjy will play this sentiment over and over in his head. It’ll be the reason he keeps his first ever secret from his sister. Now though, Benjy decides Mack can be the one to know the truth.
“He was right though.”
“Who?”
“Curt. I uh, have a crush on Ollie.”
Mack tucks some of his hair behind his free ear.
“Yeah? Are you...are you gay?”
“Nah.” Benjy sits up to look at her. Her expression is soft but hard to read.
“I’m bisexual. But uh, even though I like girls still I...I think I like boys more?”
He hadn’t told anyone that part. Mack takes his hand and squeezes it.
“Whoever you like is okay as long as they’re nice to you. Do you think Ollie likes you back?”
“Well he gave me a blowjob yesterday so I’m thinking yes?”
“Ew!”
Mack laughs and smacks his shoulder. “Don’t tell me that! You’re like, eight still. You don’t know what blowjobs are.”
“Hmm except I knew what they were then too cause I heard Robbie and Drew talking about if they thought Drew Barrymore would give good ones.”
“Oh my god.”
“He’s my boyfriend, Mack. I mean, as much as he can be with me not uh, telling anyone.”
His sister raises her eyebrows. “Mom doesn’t know?”
Benjy shakes his head. “No uh, I dont want to be the subject of more fights with her and Curt. And uh...”
He didn’t wanna lose his mom too. He’s too afraid to say it. Even to Mack.
“I’m just not ready.”
“So I’m the first person you’ve told?”
“Yeah-“
His sister pulls him into a bone crushing hug, her feet knocking against his in the water.
“I’m so proud of you, BB.”
Benjy squirms out of her grasp and fixes his hair.
“Thanks? I mean, I didnt like, decide this or anything.”
“I know. So what was this funny thing your boyfriend did the other day?”
Benjy feels warmth spread through him at Mack’s easy acceptance. At how she doesn’t even have to tell him that she’ll keep his secret. At how she’s still got her hand over his as she looks at him, waiting to hear his story.
“He uh, used both of our skateboards like skis and made me push him around the park.”
“Jesus. He sounds perfect for you.”
~
“Benjy!” Ollie waves him over from his car on the street. Instead of skating into the park, Benjy skates up along side him.
“Hey.”
“Hey.”
They look each other up and down. Benjy lets himself imagine a time in the future where he could greet him with a kiss.
“You up for an adventure today, Fenwick?
Benjy’s face breaks into a wide grin.
“Always.”
They chat about nothing and everything as Ollie drives them to their mystery destination. Benjy sings along terribly to Nirvana and makes Ollie laugh. As they get closer to the ocean, Benjy’s curiosity gets the best of him.
“Where are we going?”
“We’ve never been on a real date.” Ollie says as he slows at a stop light. “Thought I’d change that with the beach.”
Benjy’s heart stops. A date at the beach. Out in the open. Where people can see them together. Where people can see them together and start talking. Where they’re out in the open.
“Ollie-“
“It doesn’t have to be the beach, we can go anywhere really-“
“I can’t.”
As Benjy says that, they pull into a parking lot covered with sand. Ollie doesn’t say anything until he parks. When he turns to face Benjy, pain is obvious on his face.
“How is this different than us meeting at the park?”
Benjy shifts uncomfortably in his seat. “I dunno. It just is.”
“Is it cause I called it a date?”
Yes.
“No.”
Ollie doesn’t believe him. He nods once, his mouth twisting to the side, upset.
“I’m sorry.” Benjy says, almost a whisper.
“No, I’m sorry. Really.” There’s no malice in Ollie’s voice, which almost makes it worse. He’s not pissed-just sad. “You told me you’re not ready. I shouldn’t have pushed it.”
He backs out of the parking space, Benjy’s hand tentatively comes to cover Ollie’s. He watches him smile slightly in profile.
“I want to go on a beach date with you so badly. So bad, Olls. But I-“
“Can’t. I know, Benj. It’s alright. I should’ve said something before I drove out here.”
They don’t say much on the drive back, but Benjy’s hand never leaves his. He was going to tell Ollie that he’d come out to Mack, but it seemed out of place now. When they get to Benjy’s house, instead of pulling in the driveway, Ollie idles on the curb.
“I need to get home. My dad and Chris are uh, leaving for vacation tonight and I wanna see them before they go.”
Benjy hopes his face doesn’t look as crestfallen as he feels.
“Oh okay.”
Another silence.
“Can I kiss you?”
Ollie sighs and smiles at him.
“Of course you can. I’m not being fair.”
Benjy kisses him deeply.
“Maybe not. But you’re allowed to be upset.”
They kiss for several minutes, the strangeness between them disappearing as they bite at each other’s lips.
“I’d come in, Benj. But Chris and my dad really are leaving.”
Benjy laughs. “I believed you.” He kisses him again as the thought crosses his mind.
“So with your sister at camp...you have the house to yourself?”
Ollie’s eyes glint. “I do.”
“Could uh, I come over? Is it rude to invite myself?”
Ollie kisses him. “Absolutely and absolutely.”
Benjy laughs, his hand closing on the door handle as he gets out to grab his skateboard. He walks back to the open passenger door and looks at Ollie, his eyes flitting to his kiss swollen lips.
“Well good. Cause uh, I’m not ready for a date. But I think I’m ready to be done with this whole “Virgin” thing.”
Ollie groans. “Oh my god.”
“If you’re okay with that.”
“You’re something else, Benjy. You know that?”
Benjy grins at his boyfriend, wishing fiercely he could be everything Ollie needs, but glad he can at least be something else.
“Oh, I’m well aware. See you tomorrow, baby.”
Benjy blows him a kiss and turns on his heel to all but skip up the driveway. When he looks over his shoulder, Ollie is still parked, watching him. He waves, his heart skipping a beat, realizing that before tomorrow was over, everything would be different.
He had no idea how right he was.

Darth Vader’s voice will be AI-generated from now on

Enlarge / As James Earl Jones retires, Darth Vader's voice will come courtesy of voice cloning software called Respeecher.
Lucasfilm / Benj Edwards
During the creation of the Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series, James Earl Jones signed off on allowing Disney to replicate his vocal performance as Darth Vader in future projects using an AI voice modeling tool called Respeecher, according to a Vanity Fair report published Friday.
Jones, who is 91, has voiced the iconic Star Wars villain for 45 years, starting with Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope in 1977 and concluding with a brief line of dialog in 2019's The Rise of Skywalker. "He had mentioned he was looking into winding down this particular character,” said Matthew Wood, a supervising sound editor at Lucasfilm, during an interview with Vanity Fair. “So how do we move forward?”
The answer was Respeecher, a voice cloning product from a company in Ukraine that uses deep learning to model and replicate human voices in a way that is nearly indistinguishable from the real thing. Previously, Lucasfilm had used Respeecher to clone Mark Hamill's voice for The Mandalorian, and the company thought the same technology would be ideal for a major appearance of Darth Vader that would require dozens of lines of dialog. Working from archival recordings of Jones, Respeecher created a voice model that could be "performed" vocally by another actor using the company's speech-to-speech technology.
youtube
A video from Respeecher demonstrating its speech-to-speech technology for transforming voice performances.
During production on the show, Russia began its invasion of Ukraine, posing many harrowing challenges for the Respeecher team, which Vanity Fair covers in its deeply reported piece. Despite the war, Respeecher is reportedly working on other secret projects—quite possibly for Disney—so expect more Darth Vader in the future.
Vader aside, Respeecher is aware that this kind of technology could pose significant security, social engineering, and even copyright problems if anyone can imitate anyone else's voice from recorded samples. In the company's ethics statement, it says that the firm "does not allow any deceptive uses of our technology" and "does not use voices without permission when this could impact the privacy of the subject or their ability to make a living."
But voice cloning technology will not always be limited to Respeecher's labs. The open source world is catching up to it, as we reported earlier this month, with projects like Koe Recast. It's likely only a matter of time before this particularly potent genie leaves the bottle for good. Then we'll all be Darth Vader.

Christmas 2019
Christmas is the one day of the year that it isn’t completely odd for Benjy to wake up before Cass. Not completely odd but still a bit jarring for Cass to reach out to his left just as he’s starting to blink awake and not find his husband, snoring quietly into his pillow. But as it is 7:36am on December 25, 2019, according to the digital alarm clock on their dresser, Benjy will most assuredly be in the kitchen, either fussing over the finishing touches to the gifts Cass isn’t allowed to help wrap or frantically putting more easy-bake sugar cookies in the oven because the four dozen they decorated with Luke last night won’t be enough for some reason.
Cass smiles at the memory of last night, their first Christmas Eve with Luke. They’d kept it low-key, of course, staying in pajamas all day, only leaving the house to take Darling and Honey outside. At one point, Luke had insisted that they order pizza and hate-watch The Phantom Menace, which was apparently a tradition he had with his little brother Jake. Of course Cass and Benjy had found that out completely by accident when Luke let it slip when Jar-Jar Binks made his first appearance.
“Jake used to loooove Jar-Jar,” he laughs from where he’s stretched out on the couch before glancing over at Cass watching him and clamping his mouth shut.
Neither of them press, Cass eventually turning from his nephew to face the screen but more focused on tracing Benjy’s fingers when Luke speaks up again.
“We used to watch this every year,” he says quietly, his gaze focused on Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi entering the underwater Gungan city. “Christmas break is the one time I’d watch it with him.”
“That’s cute, Luke,” Cass smiles at him and Luke shrugs but a small grin tugs on his lips as he pets Darling curled next to him. Jake was the youngest of Cyrus and Rebecca’s three children, three years younger than Luke and obviously the one ally he had in that house. He didn’t talk much about any of them but Cass had seen a framed photo on his desk of Luke with his arm slung around a slightly smaller clone of himself who he assumes must be Jake. Both boys are smiling ear to ear with Jake gazing up at his big brother with clear admiration in his eyes.
“Yeah, cute that your brother likes the worst character in the Star Wars franchise,” Benjy pipes up, frowning at the television and interrupting Cass’ train of thought.
Luke sticks out his tongue at him. “This coming from a guy who’s favorite ‘film’ takes about an hour to start.”
And it pretty much went downhill from there.
Eventually, Cass forces himself to get out of bed if not for the need to tend to his bladder but out of curiosity to see what exactly Benjy is up to and whether Luke has even woken up yet. However, the bladder does have to come first. As well as putting on pants and a sweatshirt just in case his nephew is up.
When he makes his way downstairs to the kitchen, he sees them before they see him and the sudden warmth in his chest is overwhelming. His husband, his favorite person in the world leans against the kitchen island, his pink kimono thrown over navy blue pajama pants covered with dogs in Santa hats, frowning slightly as he talks to Luke who laughs and flips more pancakes onto a platter between them. Dark curls peeking out from underneath his hood and perpetual dark circles under his eyes, Cass is once again reminded of himself at that age. Except he didn’t smile nearly as much.
Thankfully, that changed.
Luke is just about to say something else to Benjy when he catches sight of Cass lurking in the doorway and if possible, his smile actually grows wider.
“Morning, Cass!”
At Luke’s greeting, Benjy springs up, followed by Honey who had been apparently just out of sight behind the island, and bounds over to Cass to fling his arms around his neck. He could live a hundred years and still never understand what he did to be the object of Benjy Fenwick’s affections.
“Look up.”
Cass lets out a fake exasperated groan and leans forward to press his forehead to Benjy’s, giggling a little as Honey bites at his sweatpants. “Don’t wanna.” Why look up when those star eyes already have everything he wants to see?
Benjy scrunches up his nose and dodges Cass’ attempt to steal a kiss. “Look up first.”
Cass hums, settling for a kiss on the cheek before finally relenting. “Let me see, it couldn’t possibly be...ah.”
Sure enough, a sprig of mistletoe hangs above them in the kitchen entryway. Identical to every other doorway in the house down to the perfect red bow that secures it in place.
“You’re a menace,” he grins back down at his beaming husband.
“Yes, but I’m your menace.”
“Thank god for that.”
This time, when he dips down for a kiss, Benjy returns it enthusiastically and Cass practically lifts him off the ground. Only to be interrupted by their nephew loudly clearing his throat.
“Just wanted to make sure you remembered I was still here,” he smirks, flipping more pancakes onto the platter.
“Mmm, couldn’t forget you if we tried, Luke,” Cass grins, giving Benjy another peck on the cheek and scooping up Honey for a quick kiss before letting her go off to bother Darling in her bed in the corner. In spite of not being able to spring up with the rest of them anymore, her tail still wags happily when Cass bends over to scratch her ears and whisper a soft Merry Christmas into her fur
“And God knows we have tried.”
“Oh shush, you,” Cass laughs, rolling his eyes at Benjy as he crosses the kitchen to give Luke a one-armed hug and yanks his hood down to kiss his sleep-mussed hair. “Merry Christmas, kid. Pancakes look delicious.”
Even that small praise makes Luke’s cheeks glow red as he works the spatula around the last few rounds of batter speckled with red and green M&M’s. “I think there’s still some coffee on. If Benj didn’t drink all of it.”
“I don’t know whether to be proud or offended that you think I have the capacity to drink two carafes already this morning,” Benjy says, resuming his position at the end of the island. “Even I have limits.”
“Mm sure,” Cass chuckles and gives Luke another squeeze before going off to see if indeed there was any coffee left. “So what were you two talking about all serious just now?”
“Oh I was just telling Luke that all the presents under the tree are actually for another Luke we know,” Benjy shrugs as he snags a pancake and takes a bite. “You know, let him down easy.”
“Ah right, sorry, Luke.”
“Right, and I told Benj that I don’t even mind if I don’t get any presents because that’s not what Christmas is about.”
“And then I called him a liar.”
“You called our nephew a liar?”
Benjy shrugs as he finishes off the pancake in his hand in two bites. “He’s 16. What else could Christmas be about?”
“Goodwill towards men perhaps?” Luke pipes up dryly.
“Oh,” Benjy grins wickedly at Cass. “I know all about goodwill towards men.”
“Benjy!”
This, this is what Cass lives for these days. The playful bickering between his husband and his nephew. Honey climbing on top of Darling only to roll off of her and get up in her face to bump noses as if to check that this is still acceptable before starting the cycle all over again. Even light blue mug in his hands, painted by Zane for his birthday last year. It’s everything.
They soon all go into the living room, each with a plate of their own, and pile onto the couch for presents, the majority of which, of course, are labeled for Luke. The matter of presents actually had been a hot topic of discussion for Cass and Benjy since the beginning of November. They’d missed fifteen Christmases and sixteen birthdays along with countless other milestones that could never be duplicated, but they still wanted to mark their first Christmas together while remembering those moments they’d lost. It was hard to think about that part of all this. Obviously, Cass had figured that Cyrus and Rebecca would have children but had accepted long ago that he and Benjy would never be in their lives. He had been more than happy to just give all the love he could give to the kids whose lives he did get to be a part of.
But now, he gets to grin at his nephew, the son of his brother who told his kids that he was dead, and nods toward the tree.
“Well, go on.”
Instead, Luke balks, tapping his fingers against his plate and chewing on his lip before standing back up suddenly and setting his plate of barely touched pancakes on the coffee table. “I uh have to get something.” He gives Cass a nervous smile. “I’ll be right back.”
“Oh.” Cass glances at Benjy, who just raises his eyebrows at him, and looks back at Luke. “Okay. Whatever you gotta do.”
They both watch as Luke dashes up the stairs to his room, Cass slumping back into Benjy’s arms the moment he’s out of sight. “He’s okay, right?”
“Baby, he just went to go get something,” Benjy says gently, pressing a kiss to his temple.
“I know, I know. I just-I don’t want to miss anything, with it being, you know, the first Christmas...”
“And you’ve literally done everything so we don’t miss anything.”
Cass cranes his neck back to look Benjy in the eye, needing that extra reassurance when it comes to Luke sometimes. That they’re doing everything they can to undo the hurt that seems to come from being a member of the Avery family. “Yeah?”
Benjy smiles and rubs Cass’ shoulder, his voice dropping as they hear Luke on the stairs again. “Yeah.”
Cass tries not to let his surprise show when he comes back into the room with his laptop clutched to his chest, radiating nervous energy as he opens it up on the coffee table.
“I um didn’t wanna wait anymore,” Luke grins at Benjy over Cass’ shoulder.
“Good, because I’ve been barely holding it together over here.”
“What are you-?” Cass sits up to look between Benjy and Luke, nearly giving himself whiplash in the process. “Wait for what?”
Benjy just grins at him while Luke busies himself with pulling up something on his computer before focusing on his uncle.
“I wanted to make sure I said all the things that I wanted to say.”
Cass nods slowly, as if that is supposed to mean something to him. “Right, sure.”
“Because I know I won’t say it right if I say it now,” Luke explains, wringing his hands together, or Cass supposes he would be explaining if he had any clue what was going on here.
“You can tell us anything, Luke,” he replies carefully, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees and his hands folded in front of him. “You know that.”
Luke smiles and sits down on the floor in front of the couch. “I do.”
Before Cass can say anything else, Luke presses the spacebar on the laptop and a sheet of paper with the words “TO CASS LOVE LUKE” written on it in red ink appears on the screen. After a few seconds, the sheet of paper drops away to reveal Luke in a green flannel and black beanie sitting at his desk in his bedroom and smiling at the webcam.
“Um, hey Cass...and Benjy, since I guess you’d be there too,” video Luke chuckles and waves at them. “Um...I’ll try to keep this short so I don’t uh cry or something, but I had a few things that I wanted to say...and then something I wanted to ask you and I wanted to do it right...if I could.”
Video Luke swallows, glancing off-camera, and Cass glances at real Luke, his hands clenched tight together under his chin.
“It’s been kind of a weird year,” video Luke says, this time his laugh an obvious effort to disguise the emotion in his throat. “I suppose that’s putting it lightly, but weird by our standards might be a little different than families that uh aren’t ours. Well...I guess they technically aren’t ours anymore anyway.”
Video Luke shakes his head and quickly swipes at his eyes. “Fuck, what did I literally just say? This is the third time...geez, okay, get it together!”
He scrubs his hands down his face, clears his throat, and stares evenly into the camera.
“I’m just gonna keep that all in there and we don’t have to talk about it,” he huffs a small laugh. “But um, the point is, that’s what I came from...to you. And it could have been, I mean let’s be real, I didn’t really know anything about you, you didn’t know anything about me. This could have been just disaster compounding on disaster. But uh...it wasn’t.” Video Luke looks away from the camera again, shy smile spread across his face with a few lingering tears just barely visible on his cheeks. “It was everything. It is everything.”
“Oh my god, kid.” Cass hears Benjy’s hushed voice and catches him squeeze Luke’s shoulder out of the corner of his eye, but he’s frozen in place, hinged on every word Luke says in the video.
“So, um, you made this a home for me within like, days of me being here,” video Luke continues, “I can’t imagine that was easy...because of all people, you know...you know better than anyone what it could be like so...I guess that leads me to my question.”
He pauses as he reaches for something out of sight, the sound of papers rustling over the speakers, and lifts a sizable stack so Cass can just make out the words in bold across the top of the first page.
STATE OF CALIFORNIA APPLICATION FOR ADOPTION REGISTRATION
When the same stack of papers are set in his lap, Cass finally tears his gaze away from the computer to look at his nephew, only realizing now that he has tears in his eyes and Benjy is gripping his hand in that secure way that always keeps him grounded.
“I know I only have like less than two years until I’m an adult and she already legally emancipated me and whatever but,” Luke shrugs, “I guess I’d rather have a family. With you guys. So...will you adopt me?”
Everything Cass wants say gets stuck in his throat, coming out as a weird strangled noise instead that makes Luke smile.
“Is that okay, Uncle Cass?”
Is that okay? Jesus Christ, what could possibly be more okay? He didn’t think he’d ever feel like this again, after Benjy and he ran off to city hall to get married moments after it was announced on TV that gay marriage was legalized. Another person expressing such unconditional trust in him--it’s too much but Cass wants more than anything to be worthy of it. Not trying to speak this time, he sets the papers aside for now and sinks onto his knees in front of Luke, who is now crying a little bit too. There’s a split moment of recognition between the two of them, even with their vision blurry from tears. He was in this same position once, cease and desist notice wrinkling in his fist, leaning heavily against the counter as his knees threaten to give out tight and dialing the number of the one person who’d given him so much hope in a few short months and now needed him to get him out of his deepest hole yet. Luke’s younger than Cass was, but now he gets to put so much ugly hurt behind him, not forgotten but healing, and Cass and Benjy get to help him start anew.
With a shaky gulp of air, Cass grabs the teenager in a tight hug right there on the floor, cupping the back of his head as he breaks down against his chest. They stay like that for several seconds, Cass rocking Luke side to side and rubbing his back through his sobs, his lips pressed to the side of his head. He glances over at Benjy, tears streaming down his cheeks as well, and reaches for his hand again, only speaking again when Luke has calmed a little against him.
“You knew?” he asks his husband with a watery smile.
“Yeah.” Benjy lets out a choked laugh, his finger tracing over Cass’ wedding ring. “I told him it might be nice to have someone to take care of us when we’re old.”
“I didn’t think that far ahead yet,” Cass chuckles, resituating himself and Luke so Luke can lean against him while Cass gets off his knees that are already starting to ache.
“Yeah, well I’ve had more time to think it over, Cassie,” Benjy grins as he scoots off the couch to join them on the floor. “And I have to tell you that I think the pros greatly outweigh the cons here.”
“Mm, I think you’re right,” Cass smiles and looks down at Luke who is watching both of them, still a little teary-eyed and clutching onto Cass as if Cass had any intention of letting him go anytime soon. “You’re perfect for us.”
“That’s exactly what I said.”
“So Luke?” Cass gently swipes his thumb under his nephew’s right eye.
“Yeah?”
“You wouldn’t by chance happen to have a pen on you, would you?”

GET FAMILIAR: Week of March 25, 2019

COMING SOON: Son Volt
Release Title: Union (LP)
Release Date: Friday, March 29, 2019
What To Expect: Midwestern alternative country band Son Volt is the brainchild of songwriting icon Jay Farrar. After getting his start as a member of the legendary alt rock crew Uncle Tupelo, Farrar left the group once his tumultuous relationship with bandmate Jeff Tweedy reached the point of no return. The result of this split was Son Volt, and it led to the creation of some of the most influential music of Farrar’s career.
Fast forward to the present and the band is preparing to drop their ninth studio album, titled Union, this Friday. We’ve heard “Devil May Care,” “The 99,” and “The Reason” so far, and each one features Farrar’s insanely catchy, politically-charged lyrics. "I was raised around folk music and political commentary," Farrar notes. "I've listened to Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan enough over the years, so it just felt like second nature,” he said to Billboard in January about his songwriting. “The 99” is an especially crunchy jam that has a kickass, guitar-laden outro you’ve got to hear to believe. Union is sure to be another impressive record from the Son Volt gang, make sure to give it a listen!
Son Volt returns to 9:30 Club on Sunday, May 5 — tickets available here.

LOCAL LEGENDS: O.A.R.
Release Title: The Mighty (LP)
Release Date: Friday, March 29, 2019
What To Expect: Five-piece rock band O.A.R., short for Of A Revolution, has deep ties to the state of Maryland, with four of its members (lead vocalist/guitarist Marc Roberge, drummer Chris Culos, guitarist Richard On, and bassist Benj Gershman) having graduated from Thomas Sprigg Wootton High School in Rockville. The four collectively decided to attend The Ohio State University together post-high school, and it was there in Columbus that they met saxophonist/guitarist Jerry DePizzo and asked him to round out their current lineup. Since the quintet was finalized in 1996, the group has put out eight full-length studio albums, with their last project being 2014’s The Rockville LP.
O.A.R. has always maintained an active touring schedule, playing a significant amount of dates over the past few years since the release of The Rockville LP. Fans have been patiently waiting for more music since then, and they had their prayers answered a few weeks ago when the band dropped a new song titled “All Because Of You” and announced that it would serve as the lead single for their next project, The Mighty. “All Because Of You” is a reserved, laid-back track that sees Roberge’s voice floating over a backdrop of slowly strummed guitar licks. It’s a song that explores the feelings of loss and regret that come with the end of a relationship, and it seems like the perfect ballad to put on repeat after a particularly stinging breakup. It will be interesting to see if the whole album follows suit with the emotional intensity of its lead single, but only time will tell. Give The Mighty a listen this Friday.

WILD CARD: Tierra Whack
Release Title: TBD
Release Date: Tuesday, March 26, 2019
What To Expect: If you aren’t familiar with Philly’s Tierra Whack and her fantastically quirky brand of hip-hop, I suggest you immediately stop what you’re doing and watch the video for her debut project, Whack World. The album is made up of fifteen one-minute songs, and the video contains an equally compelling compilation of fifteen different scenes to match the theme of each song. Simply put, it’s a masterpiece — and it helped her take the music world by storm in 2018.
Whack possesses a relentless work ethic and at times, her constant outpouring of content can seem almost never-ending, somewhat contradicting her Twitter bio, which boasts, “SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE!” A few weeks ago, she announced the commencement of #WhackHistoryMonth, and each Tuesday for the past five weeks, she’s dropped banger after banger. Two standouts from the run include the brooding, self-aware “CLONES” and the most recent release in the series, “Unemployed.” For someone who is still a relative newcomer to the game, Whack certainly has quite the impressive catalog of work under her belt. It’s a Whack World, and we’re all just living in it. Here’s to hoping that #WHM lasts forever, or at least through next Tuesday.

The 500 greatest video games of all time: 500-401
New Post has been published on https://takenews.net/the-500-greatest-video-games-of-all-time-500-401/
The 500 greatest video games of all time: 500-401
As Polygon’s latest fifth birthday approached, we began interested by what we might do to have fun it. And what’s extra enjoyable than rating the 100 greatest video games of all time? 500? So we did.
We began by setting guidelines upfront.
We requested everybody to vote primarily based on innovation, polish and sturdiness, fairly than merely private style. We lower video games launched in 2017 to remove recency bias. And we ignored sequels that we deemed too much like the video games that got here earlier than them.
Then we voted, however we knew we had gaps in our data on workers. So along with gathering votes from the Polygon workforce, we labored with a gaggle of exterior and freelance writers to tug of their enter: Kahlief Adams, Susan Arendt, Katherine Cross, Jon-Paul Dyson, Benj Edwards, Cara Ellison, JC Fletcher, Jenn Frank, Harold Goldberg, Janine Hawkins, Blake Hester, Laura Hudson, Henry Lowood, Jeremy Parish, Carolyn Petit, Andrea Rene, Jaz Rignall and Gary Whitta.
Gathering all these votes collectively, we then combed by way of the information for anomalies and got here up with the ultimate order you see right here, with private decisions for every voter’s favourite recreation sprinkled all through as sidebars — together with, as you’ll see under, just a few decisions that didn’t even make the general record.
Over the course of this week, we’re posting 100 video games every day. Scroll down for the primary 100.

(1986, Arcade, others)
Arkanoid is like Breakout, however immensely higher. Taking the blockbuster’s gameplay, however including power-ups and new degree layouts, Arkanoid is a real check of talent. Cloned and ported all over since, Arkanoid continues to be among the best arcade video games on the market.

Dragon Age: Inquisition felt just like the end result of one thing the sequence had been constructing to for years. By means of the earlier two video games, gamers got here to know and perceive the world of Thedas; its folks, politics, threats and historical past. However in Inquisition it’s as if a curtain lifted. What as soon as felt like the entire story shifted into the background of a bigger story, making the actual stakes that rather more significant.
The early Dragon Age video games made me care about their world in a manner no different sequence ever has — and even so, Inquisition confirmed me simply how little of it I’d actually seen.
– Janine Hawkins (@bleatingheart)
(2014, PC, PlayStation three, Xbox 360, others)

(1990, Tremendous Nintendo, others)
F-Zero’s insistence in pushing technological boundaries to be the quickest recreation ever seen helped encourage video games like Wipeout and Daytona USA. Giving gamers solely moments to react earlier than crashing, F-Zero continues to be one of many tightest, tensest racing video games obtainable.

Taking affect from F-Zero, Wipeout was a technical tour-de-force when it launched on the unique PlayStation. Even with its bizarre, dream-like puzzle sections stuffed with sheep and monstrous infants, Catherine is a surprisingly nuanced tackle intercourse and grownup relationship, exploring the causes of lust, love and guilt.
(1991, Sport Boy)
A sequence recognized for its emphasis on meticulous exploration, Metroid’s soar to handheld with Metroid 2: Return of Samus looks like an ideal match. Regardless of its small bodily measurement, Metroid 2’s steady massive world makes for a cohesive expertise, and the choice to take it wherever enable the sport to be explored wherever the participant goes.
(1992, PC, others)
Surprising and Lovecraftian, Alone within the Darkish’s distinctive strategy to horror and exploration spawned a style now a staple of the sport trade and birthed a few of the best video games of all time. Whereas it could not be part of the upper ranks of horror video games additional down the record, Alone within the Darkish was the primary of its sort.
(2004, GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox)
Among the best superhero video games of all time, Spider-Man 2 got here remarkably near giving gamers the expertise they had been watching on screens and seeing in comics. Climbing to the highest of a constructing, diving off, solely to shoot an online and swing to security on the final second was exhilarating and anxiousness inducing.
(2000, Dreamcast, others)
Earlier than there was Simply Dance, there was Area Channel 5.
