Hi Jen, I have a question to ask. As a gay woman I end up with largely gay friends. I started to find myself crushing very hard on one of my friends.... She is beautiful, smart, funny, and all around amazing and I just want to hold her and kiss her neck and- anyways getting back on track, I'm scared of ruining a friendship or misinterpreting aspects of close friendship with her reciprocating in small ways. We've had small moments but because of the friendship we have I'm scared to jump to assuming anything would come of it. Then again the best partners start as friends. Should I take a leap of faith but by potentially causing an rift in our friendship? Am I just overthinking the effect getting rejected will have? Something tells me this is more common than I think but I don't have a real life point of reference so...

My first two relationships began right off as dating to test romantic interest so we had no foundation of interests or common values. My first girlfriend and I were powered by youth and fun and passion. It ran out of steam eventually and while we loved some of the same things we absolutely disliked some as well.

My second girlfriend (and wife of 17 years) had a relationship almost soley based on fear of being alone and mutual need to not be on our own. That lasted as long as it did because of kids and fear is a powerful uniter even when you share very little in common.

My last girlfriend and I were friends for two years but from day one I knew I was falling for her. She was the one that took a chance and it was by far the best, most passionate, most fun, most fulfilling romantic relationship I have experienced. We are back to just friends now due to some life circumstances and we share such an amazing connection we are able to maintain bounaries and be friends. She is my best friend.

My point is. Yes, ask her. Tell her how you feel. If it is a friendship worth keeping/having you can navigate whatever the answer is that she gives. If she bails because you expressed a deeper interest she was not a friend you need long term.

If you continue to second guess, try to read her mind, over think every move and word you will stress yourself and possibly your friendship. It is such a common lesbians thing to do. Try to figure out what the answer will be if you express interest in love beyond friends. It is like we are trying to mitigate the risk, caculate our success rate. But we are pretty bad as guess work in general.. 

You should be enjoying your time with her and not be preoccupied with the “what if”.The sooner you communicate how you feel the sooner you can either have closure and focus on the friendship OR you can affirm she likes you and get on with enjoying the firting and romance between you.

Regarding Cosplay Sweaters

I got an ask today about the sweaters I'd like to make for Kanbara Akihito and Nase Hiroomi cosplays. Here's the answer I wrote:

Thanks for asking! They'll be just as they look in the show; Hiroomi's will be black with the white ridge around the neckline, Akihito's will have the diamond pattern and a ribbed neckline. Because it's occasionally off-model, I'm going with the official art version that is five diamonds wide and three tall from bottom to v-neck. Both would be long-sleeved and made of a machine washable wool blend yarn. Very comfy.

Alternatively, I'm also more than happy to work the summer vests!

Price point will be somewhere around $50, though my guinea pigs will get a discount and just pay for materials and shipping ($30-40 total). And of course, the vests would be cheaper. The more orders I get, though, the cheaper they'd be, because I could order supplies in bulk, so spread it around! Another option would be to make it out of a cheaper yarn, but the quality would be a bit lower (it'd be prone to piling, but it'd probably fine for a few wears).

I'll also be doing Kuriyama Mirai's cardigan and maybe summer vest, so keep your eyes out for that!
