Writing books about short stories and poems can be exhausting because sometimes you may encounter roadblocks. Here are some creative writing exercises to help you. Write what you know! Do it for yourself! Write only when you are inspired! If you are or know of an aspiring writer, you might have heard these clichés once or twice (really, a lot more) in your life—and not without reason. Sentiments like these are a dime a dozen if you are an aspiring writer simply wanting to discover some ideas or get some writing tips. They are quite popular, solely for the reason that they are simple, one-liners that anyone can interpret on their own…

WFH job sent me on an actual work trip, going in the actual classroom in person with this awesome team of fellow @beyondthepage.midd faculty artists. I also found myself back in an actual rehearsal room with other people in the flesh for the first time in almost 2 years & maybe got a bit tooooo into tablework & blocking for these non-theatre undergrads— like, full-on nerd alert. 🤓 Luckily they were all game too. Seriously, these students are so much more put together, brilliant, & articulate about complex issues than I ever was in college. They invigorate my hope for the future. #middleburycollege #beyondthepage #freedomdreaming #newenglandfall (at Middlebury, Vermont) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWRiI9QvlwC/?utm_medium=tumblr

For this installment of “Beyond the Page,” I interviewed Tanuja Devi Jagernauth—Indo-Caribbean playwright, dramaturg, organizer—about how her practices in theater, prison abolition, healing justice, and transformative justice interconnect; creating spaces for BIPOC theater-makers; doing mutual aid during and beyond the pandemic; and how she challenges systems of oppression and struggles for collective liberation through her work.
Read the interview on the Sixty Inches from Center website. Jagernauth’s short play, To Know A Neighbor, is also embedded within the article!
Image description #1: Tanuja Devi Jagernauth. In this medium close-up photo, a self-portrait, Jagernauth looks at the camera with a firm expression. She wears glasses, red lipstick, hoop earrings, a headwrap, and a black cardigan over a black shirt that reads “WE DON’T PLAY,” repeated. Photo courtesy of the artist.
Image description #2: A digital illustration with four overlapping quadrants. In the top left-hand corner, three bees face a section of honeycomb. In the bottom left-hand corner, two people smile behind transparent face masks, each person holding part of a bag’s handle. The bag depicts a heart against a tree, with a broad circle behind that. In the bottom right-hand corner, a hand holds a pencil poised above the first line of a new sheet of paper. In the top right-hand corner, hand-written words float in the air (action, mutual aid, building, alignment, restructuring, bravery, struggle, ideas, collaboration), with dark blue, purple, and pink shading behind each. The left side of the illustration is yellow, the right side is blue, and they fade together to make green in the middle. Illustration by Teshika Silver (@astratesh).

Title: Beyond The Pages
Series: Cruisin’ Around
Author: P. Sawyer
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Arianna
Ten days on an adult only cruise to celebrate my latest novel hitting the NYT bestseller list? Check.
Ten days of relaxation with the best friends a girl can have? Check.
Falling in love with my best friend from childhood? Check. Oh wait…what?
I’ve known Bentley for my entire life, well since high school, but we’ve always kept it platonic until he surprises me on the cruise with an upgrade a week I never could imagine. I’m completely thrown for a loop when he admits his feelings for me. Bentley can have any girl he wants but he wants me. This seems like a plot out of one of my books…but could it be real?
Bentley
Ten days on an adult only cruise after a grueling tour? Check.
Ten days of relaxation with friends I haven’t seen in over a year? Check.
Finally admitting my feelings for my best friend. Check…we’ll sort of.
I surprise Arianna with an upgraded suite with me for her latest success, but that’s not all I surprise her with. She writes romance novels, but I’m about to give her the most romantic vacation she could imagine. I’ve loved her since we were in high school, but never told her. Now, I’m not losing that chance again. I can have any woman in the world, but I only want her.

I wasn’t tagged by anyone but I thoroughly enjoy watching these tags on YouTube that I thought I’d participate.  I’m always on the lookout for tags that translate well to a blog and this is one of them.  Besides, who doesn’t enjoy a good classic?
The tag was started by TheSkepticalReader  and BeyondthePages. Take a look at their channels if you want to see their responses.
1. Why do you read Classics and how often do you read Classics?
I started dipping my toes in the waters of the classic world sometime last year when I discovered book blogs and Booktube.  There were so many interesting reviews.  I found my favorite classic of all time through one of these mediums.  As to how often I read classics?  not as often as I want to considering there are so many that I need to get through……
2. What is a period/country/culture that you haven’t read many classics from and would like too?
I’m going to say Portugal.  I know that there are other countries that I have not read any books from which I am sure have a rich history.  Portugal is my country of birth and therefore I always feel that I need to read more of our classics in order to remember where I came from.
3. Which modern book do you think will be a classic in 100 years time?
I really enjoyed Rules of Civility by Amor Towles.  I’m not really sure what makes a classic except that there is that something that other books do not have.  I feel that Rules of Civility has it.  Even the cover is great and has that classic look.
Tumblr media
4. What was the last classic you read?
Rebecca was the last classic I read.  It seems like an eternity ago.  but I’m making my way through the list of classics on my TBR list.
Tumblr media
This is the story of a young woman who while in the employee of a wealthy woman meets and falls in love with a gentleman who is also wealthy.  Although they barely knew each other they married.  The story follows her as she discovers a deep dark secrete which starts to unravel as she steps into the home of her new husband.  This book kept me at the edge of my seat.  Still one of my most favorite classics of all time.
5. What was the first classic you ever read?
The Little Prince by Antoine De Saint-Exupery.  My father used to read it to me and when I learned to read I read it to him.  I have also given this book as a present to all my nephews.
6. Favorite classic book cover.
Most of the classics I’ve read are on my eReader and since they are classics a lot of them are either free or a very inexpensive price and therefore they don’t really have a cover with any designs.  I may have forgotten the covers of the ones that are still boxed up in the basement waiting for my bookshelves to be ordered and installed.  This is my long way of saying that I will have to skip this answer.
7. Classic authors you wish had written more books
Anne Bronte.  She only wrote two novels.
8. Least Favourite classic
I absolutely hated Animal Farm by George Orwell.  I first read it in College for a political science class and I remember not liking it.  I thought it was because someone was making me read it.  I picked it up last year again to see if, in fact, it was as good as everyone claimed and I’m sorry to say (not really sorry) I didn’t like it at all.  It just didn’t’ connect with me.
Tumblr media
9. Favorite translated classic
I think I will have to say that the Little Prince is the most favorite translated classic.  However, just so I don’t keep saying the same thing over and over again I’m also going to mention The Art of War by Sun Tzu.
Tumblr media
10. Favourite modern classic (published after 1900)
The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë.  The story of a woman who moves to a small town with her son to get away from an abusive situation.  She struggles to make ends meet but is determined to make it work.
Tumblr media
Then there are a few Portuguese classics by Eça de Queirós.
11. Classic literary places you would like to visit
Menderley from Rebecca (are you shocked?)
Narnia from Chronicles of Narnia
12. First classic you would recommend for a child?
Because it’s my favorite I would recommend The Little Prince.  However, there are others.  While in college I took a children’s literature class and I really enjoyed The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Tumblr media
13. Classics you think are mistitled and what would you title them?
As much as I tried I could not think of anything.
14. Your favourite classic you’d like to recommend to everyone.
I know that many may disagree with me but I will have to say that I have recommended Rebecca to everyone.  I think it’s a great introduction to the classics.  I think many people don’t read classics because they are often difficult to get through due to the difference in language.  The reason for this is that we continuously recommend the same difficult books.  I think Rebecca was “easy” to read …. not a fluffy type of ease.
I hope you enjoy this tag.  I’m making my way through two books right now Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen  and Agnes Grey by Anne Brontë.
Classic Book Tag I wasn't tagged by anyone but I thoroughly enjoy watching these tags on YouTube that I thought I'd participate.

My Review
In Grave Consequences, Cass hears the voices of the dead. A lot of them…making such a cacophony that she can’t understand what they want. Finally, while visiting her town’s lighthouse with friends, she hears a clear message, “Stay away from the lighthouse.” Immediately afterwards she sees a man fall from a window to his death. Just like the first lighthouse keeper, Samuel, had died in…

Book Review: Rescue Me by N. J. Walters
Book Review: Rescue Me by N. J. Walters @njwaltersauthor @BeyondthePage
A second chance romance, “Rescue Me” tests the saying “you can find love in the most unexpected place” to the nth degree when firefighter Frank Ellis rescued his high school girlfriend Martha Benson from a raging inferno.
Rescue Me
Before you say, “Of course, he’s a fireman! Where else can he find her?” the truth is that Frank left her 20 years ago because of fire.
That sounds cryptic, but if I…

For this installment of “Beyond the Page,” I interviewed fiction writer and high school English teacher Sahar Mustafah about her debut novel, The Beauty of Your Face. We spoke about her process of drafting, crafting, and publishing the book; how her writing and teaching inform each other; and key experiences—and women—that have shaped her as an author.
Read the interview on the Sixty Inches from Center website.
