Birch from Dawn Of The Clans. Birch belongs to SkyClan or “Clear Sky’s Camp” after Clear sky kills his mother, Misty, and leaves Birch and his sister alder without a parent, Clear sky grows a conscience for 0.1 seconds and realises that this is bad but then suggests killing the kits as it’s the most “merciful” thing to do. This is denied by Thunder and they are taken back to camp and raised by their step-in mother, Petal. He becomes ill, along with Alder and Petal and while he and his sister are healed by the Star flower, Petal unfortunately dies. He is seen being unquestionably loyal to Clear sky despite his past actions and is a an eager learner to become a warrior. He is still alive as of Shadowstar’s life. What a Chad.(Info gained from the wiki, books)
A character that unfortunately infuriates me, it's not his fault little stinky dumb man but the way he LOVES Clear sky after all he did,., Can you tell I hate Clear sky? Yeah he went through a lot but that's not an excuse for being a literal kitty cat dictator lol.
Anyways, the siblings are very confusing design wise, I can't remember who named them but uh, why did they name the ginger one Birch and the white one Alder...??? So I tried to make Birch fit his name hahah. Pretty happy with it!!! I just KNOW he's got a confident attitude! But he's kind deep down after all he went through. He won't deny anyone in need!
I do commissions! Dm me for more info!

a field guide specifically about the creation of the clans and stories about the early clans would have been SO COOL but no we spend an arc with clear sky
on that note tho are there any cool legends the clans share about the beginning of the clans in BB?
If the writers go 5 minutes without saying Clear Sky smells nice they will die
COOL LEGENDS BB!CATS HAVE ABOUT THE DAWN ERA:
Generally, stories from this time are heavily mythologized. It is the era of legends and high fantasy, with its founders being remembered as abstractions more than real cats.
So ideally I'd love to tell arcs where every appearance of the founders in StarClan is like seeing angels. Monstrous, powerful beings that are more elemental than feline. Then, suddenly, you get to go back and see them before their appearances were twisted by generations of fantasy.
The Red Squirrels and the Gray Squirrels (Pishkaf om Chakchak) A ThunderClan myth, especially popular after the exile of SkyClan. The story goes that the wretched gray squirrels once decided to persecute the humble red squirrels. So the red squirrels appealed to Thunderstar to save them, but Skystar decreed that might makes right, and refused to manage the gray squirrels in his territory. It's treated as a kitten story, a parable about the importance of managing one's territory and defending things with low threat level.
Bumble Mumble and the Rogue of Rot The Clan cat version of a tower of babel story. It's the story of an unnamed rogue who steals the kittens of Turtle Heart and Bumble Mumble, killing Turtle Heart in the process. In response, Bumble lets out a mournful wail that strips the Rogue's words away and scrambles language forever.
Sun Shadow Steals the Sun The story of One Eye's defeat, slowly morphed into a cute tale about why you can't stare at the sun. The legend goes that One Eye was unbeatable, wearing a pelt that could not be scratched, even as all the founders united to defeat him. Sun Shadow realized that the only thing that could defeat him was the power within him, and so he challenged him to "show all of his might." Through this, his flesh was burned, but he gained a power above all. He guards this now as the sun itself, but would have to give it up to the next person who defeats him in a staring contest. So don't look!
Snake Claw's Serpents Newest one I'm still working on; but once upon a time, in his hatred of serpents, Snake Claw slew all of them from the deadliest adder down to the most defenseless slowworm. But without snakes to fear coming into their burrows, all the prey hid there, and all the cats of the Clans went hungry. He begged StarClan to return the serpents, and they agreed-- but he would need to craft them again, from memory. He spun his hate into love, but each one still came out endearingly wonky. It's why a grass snake has no venom, a slowworm's tail can fall off, and some adders are green. And most importantly, it is why "Snakes" (serpent in Clanmew, "Sis") have scales despite being "Worms." He forgor.
That last one's still changing though, I think it's very cute but I also want to make sure to put Snake as a character rework before the fun legend I want him to have, lmao.
#Snake was probably just particularly good at catching adders and they made the story up#With a name like Snake you have to be at least a little interested#Nominative determinism and all lmao#Since there's no slash in BB I have a lot of room with him#I'm thinking he might end up connected to RiverClan tbh#I'm half tempted to make him a composite with Petal's adopted kid Birch. Have that be an old name#So Birch and Alder are Red Claw and Snake Claw#I think I'd be able to do it since there's no shortage of random background characters in BB#BUT ALSO it would make him pretty young when I want him to be Thunder's age#But RE: I'm not held back by sticking close to canon for this arc so it's not AS big of a deal to shuffle the timeline a bit.#clan culture#Better bones au#BB!DOTC

I have a completely random theory that Birch and Alder from DoTC where meant to have swapped descriptions.
Alder looks like this
And Birch looks like this:
But birch trees are famous for having white bark with darker spots and speckles, while alder trees can be used to produce a dark ginger or auburn dye
So my theory is that Birch was supposed to be white with darker spots and Alder was supposed to be ginger but they where erroneously described as the opposite and it just ended up sticking
#warrior cats#dotc#Alder wc#Birch wc#I low-key kinda think the same thing about Dovewing and Ivypool#because doves are typically depicted as white and an ivy is a plant. which is green#ivypool having white on her and dovewing having green eyes...

sometimes i wonder if the clans actually have a concept of child abuse
like cats get abused in broad daylight SO OFTEN and nobody ever does shit. like its not even like modern usamerican society where everyones isolated and thats why ppl get away w/ abusing their kids, their parenting spaces are COMMUNAL? everyone can see this shit and theyre just like 'huh blorboclaw is kinda mean to his kid huh anyway.'
lionpaw (!!!! ashfur beat the shit out of him WITH A CROWD WATCHING...)
breezepaw
thunder, alder and birch way back in dotc
crookedkit
tigerpaw (some of leopardfoot's dialogue implies that him coming home injured from training is like a normal occurrence. at another point in BP bluestar sees thistleclaw knocking tigerpaw around and wonders if she should report him to sunstar, but all concerns for tigerpaws possible victimhood leave her when she sees him maul a child at the command of his mentor.)
tallpaw
brokenkit
probably more that im missing. like jesus its child abuser central up in here

I remember when I was reading DOTC when I was around 10, and ever since Misty died I had been waiting for the moment where Birch and Alder learned about her murder, how everyone in their lives has kept it a secret. And then it just didn't happen.
I also remember obsessively re-reading the part where Quiet Rain blows up at Clear Sky.
Birch and Alder are two characters that are just so...
I WANT to say they were forgotten about, but that word doesn't feel right for how they're constantly showing up on the screen. Clear Sky occasionally feels guilty about how he murdered their mother, but for the vast majority of the time, that's described in passive voice. So you're not reminded of just HOW cruel he was, and still very much is.
It's like they're not allowed to be characters.
Like, how does Alder feel about Clear Sky, who seemed to be acting as an adoptive father until he beat her as a child? How did Birch respond later, when Clear Sky was so busy thrashing his sister that he was threatened by a dog? How do they feel about the man who took their mother away from them?
They keep getting cited as "Good Examples Of Non-Campborn Cats," dodging around the fact they were stolen and raised by Petal. Like a lot of the other "adoptions" in the series, she quietly stops mattering to them. But even this fact... like, they're being OTHERED when they were functionally raised SkyClan.
How do they feel about THAT? That their earliest memory is SkyClan, and yet, they'll never be considered truly, fully "clanborn."
Their whole life taken from them, by Clear Sky's cruelty, their formative years spent in his violent shadow, and the narrative is just not interested in that.
#birch wc#alder wc#I see a lot of people calling this arc So Very Interesting#Begging for more of it#but like... the more I think about this arc the more I hate it.#Both reading it and the deep dissatisfaction that settles over me thinking about how much potential it wasted#All sacrificed on the altar of Sweet Brother Love or whatever was going on there#Even people who go 'oh it was so exciting' like... when. did we read the same series#the entire thing is clear sky causing problems and then no one is allowed to react violently to them#because that makes us Just As Bad#what was interesting about 3 books of the moor cats doing NOTHING as clear makes the plot happen#And another 3 books of Clear just being a bastard and everyone feels bad about hating his guts#And here's Birch and Alder who have never really been explored ever#because it would require them to fucking hate the guy who ruined their lives#it doesn't JIVE with his exoneration arc. so it cant happen

Notes (not all my notes though and I'm not done) for the DOTC Rewrite.
It is clear from the start that Clear Sky is pushy and controlling. He pressures Bright Stream to go on the Journey.
Rainswept Flower and Turtle Tail do not die. Turtle Tail has more kits with Bumble (father unspecified), and Rainswept Flower has kits with Jagged Peak (the litter Holly would have had) as Shadowclan cats. Holly Bird, a trans molly who is noted to be very pretty. Storm Pelt, a son who shows interest in Medicine. Then Dew Nose, a little daughter who is a happy Shadowclan cat, mentoring an apprentice of her own in the end and the ancestor of Tallpoppy.
Emberkit is renamed to Ember Paws. Still dies though. After Gray Wing's insensitive remark, he is kicked from the moor group.
Bright Stream breaks it off with Clear Sky after he starts gaining power, dying in the building and having Thunder Storm (1 kit litter). Petal gets together with him, and is his one bit of clarity, the one cat who can keep him on track. They foster Birch and Alder, and she ends up pregnant during The Blazing Star with the other litter. She does not know his true crimes and tries to remain more neutral. She coins the idea of a mediation role.
Clear Sky has vitiligo, he grows more white as things go on, symbolizing his clouded judgment. By the 6th book, he is almost pure white.
Petal is the one cat that makes him apologize, forcing him to be a little better. When he at first rejects Bumble, she comes forward and says that she can stay, but for one night only. She is also renamed Sky Petal...
Bumble is taken in by Tall Shadow, and she leaves with her and Turtle Tail, disgusted by Gray Wing's attitude. She becomes mates with Bumble and it is clear Gray Wing was never the true protagonist.
Sparrow Fur wants revenge on Tom, not to meet her "father". When she pounces on him, he recognizes her and starts beating her. One Eye steps in.
Slash no longer truly exists. Female villain time BABEY
Star Flower is the final antagonist, she is making Clear Sky worse and trying to kill off the leaders. At first it is for One Eye to rule, but after his death, it is to ruin the Clans for killing her father, she brings his rogues together and carves a flower petal into their paws. She is a parallel to canon's enabling attitude towards cats like Clear Sky.
River Ripple has much more involvement with the issues, he doesn't want to be involved, but he has no choice. His home is under threat and he cannot simply sit back and watch other cats be tortured by Clear Sky.
The ending is Gray Wing succumbing to his asthma, kicked out of the Clans (except Shadowclan, which he doesn't even try with) by their leaders. He dies at Fiveoaks, swearing that he will haunt the Clans that rejected him forever, he will destroy their precious Stars. Except Shadowclan, he still has love for Turtle Tail and the home she loves, unable to let go of his possessive behavior towards her. He doesn't go to Starclan, or even the Dark Forest. He is so full of hate, his ghost haunts the living world.

Chiming in to add that this is not even subtext in DOTC. It's pretty explicit actually.
Clear Sky murders a random native, Misty, to steal her land. She refuses to give up her land and Clear Sky kills her for it.
He then wants to kill her children (Birch and Alder) to "spare their suffering," but Petal, Clear Sky's most fanatical supporter, adopts them.
Three natives are killed over the new borders before any of the "settlers" are. Fox (enforcing), Misty (stealing), and Bumble (using). Those were just on-screen; Clear Sky was chasing out countless unspoken of cats at the borders.
In Moth Flight's Vision, we see that Birch and Alder are still considered "born outside the Clan" and used as examples of now non-mountain cats can be trustworthy. In spite of being raised in proto-SkyClan.
Milkweed is still upset about her friend being murdered by Book 5, but Gray Wing decides they can "make up for the pain and suffering" by telling her to join Proto-SkyClan, because the new way of life outweighs the constant murder and brand new borders that didn't exist before.
One Eye and Slash are depicted as a special, unique kind of "true evil" to contrast Clear Sky and how he was a good person all along. They love kicking old people and hurting children and were just conveniently off-screen while Clear Sky was rising to power, only to appear when he needs an antagonist to oppose.
MANY of the cats who are summoned to fight beside them are faceless, unnamed massive armies. I jokingly call them "Instant Martians" because they really do just seem to spring up out of the ground when a Big Bad needs manpower, but a LOT of emphasis is put on how they're unwashed and "stinky," with long claws and knotted fur.
Using Petal and her brother Fox, there is a bonus chapter written that depicts life "pre-settlers" as being uniquely brutal and no one took care of orphaned kittens before Clear Sky. We find out that Misty chased off a baby Petal and Fox. Milkweed seems to contradict this directly, but the bonus chapter was still written to serve a narrative function; rehabilitate the fact that Misty's children were orphaned and taken.
In spite of River Ripple and Wind Runner making their own groups during the events of DOTC, it's implied that no one ever thought of that before the Settlers. The only pre-settlement society that we see in DOTC (from One Eye, Slash, and Hawk in Riverstar's Home) were brutish and bloodthirsty "might makes right" coalitions.
DOTC plays into VERY common colonialism rhetoric and propaganda when you analyze it critically. Clear Sky and the mountain cats being Great Civilizers, the natives being savage and only caring for their personal social units, the "Us vs Them" mentality being justified by creating uniquely evil groups that threaten the "peace" with legions of nameless instant martians bound by "fear and spite" instead of "love and friendship."
It says the natives HAD no culture... so there's nothing being "replaced" or "displaced." There's just the glorious new world brought by the settlers, and some of the natives follow suit.
Contrast that to the Tigerheartstar vs RiverClan conflict, where there is an established rule in their own code that Clans aren't supposed to let others fall. A rule that all leaders agreed on adding, because of the time this happened with The Kin, which was within living memory.
Don't get me wrong-- I agree with Tigerheartstar's logic and the drastic action he took based on the context, but it was still a violation of RiverClan's autonomy. I think the books actually did a pretty bad job of showing how occupation like this, regardless of good intentions, doesn't work and almost always leads to worse outcomes in the long run. But it wasn't colonialism.
Colonialism is a practice of a more powerful nation dominating another nation or group, to extend and maintain its own power. Tigerheartstar wasn't doing that, he was trying to fill a power vacuum so another Clan wouldn't fall apart. Colonialism often includes invasion and occupation, but they're not the same exact thing.
How can you suggest that what TigerHeart is doing is "colonization" and that it's the only case of it, when in dotc there is literally an entire group - which consists of the main characters- that is referred to as "The Settlers"
#dotc hate#Warrior cats analysis#Colonialism#Invasion#ASC Discussion#DOTC Discussion#also colonialism and imperialism often experience overlap as terms but most academics try to use them in tandem to describe two sides of--#--the same coin#where colonialism is the establishment of colonies to displace and subjugate the population#where imperialism is controlling another nation to benefit the imperial core#So under that definition settler colonialism is colonialism but not imperialism#BUT then it becomes imperialism because of a bigger nation backing it for their own ends#See: Israel and the USA#But thankfully wc hasn't like. done that. yet.#i wish i could teach a class on 'social issues thru the lens of wc' lmao#Honestly tho I think I can answer your first post's question directly!#no one has read DOTC <3

Just a big heap of cats. Birch and his sister Alder, and their mother Misty. Misty died, so their adopted mother is Petal, and she's with her brother Fox. Pink Eyes and Blossom are from Thunderclan, Frost is Shadowclan, Spotted Fur, Owl Song, Reed Tail, and Swift Minnow are Windclan. Fircone and Nettle are Skyclan, Rainswept Flower, Mud Paws, and Mouse Ear are also Shadowclan. Shaded Moss didn't get to join a group, he's also Rainswept Flower's father. Swift and Branch are loners.
