Birds was not at all interested in what most teens his age would be doing. He didn't have the luxury to do what they did. Party, go to school, make friends... well maybe he did that. He had Josie after all, though she had been missing for a while now. The police weren't helpful nor did they care about the word of a homeless teen. So Birds did the only thing he could do, continue to work and wait for her return if she was still alive at all.
The subway station at Fifth and Queens was his main base of operations. Meaning this is where he slept. He had found a way into the tunnels that wasn't watched. The bearded guard was once part of the military and suffered from his own demons so he often just ignored the small unassuming 18-year old that Birds was. Birds nest, as Josie liked to call it, was filled with shiny bits and bobbles mostly inexpensive things, empty glass bottles to mirrors. All of which reflected the very little light the tiny hard to get to room had. It all vaguely looked like the stars in the sky, mimicking a page tacked to the far wall next to a pile of blankets and pillows. Birds ungracefully flopped onto the mess of blankets and fell into a restless sleep.
Birds hated this part of the city, perhaps due to childhood memories, more likely actually. This place made him far too on edge, not that he wasn't on edge most of the time anyway. He just felt more paranoid. "Did you hear about that manner that burnt down a few years back?" Birds overheard someone while walking down the street. He felt his spine stiffen. He stopped to listen further, mostly out of curiosity. "Yeah what about it?" "It's nearby, I hear the remains are haunted." Birds new the place they spoke of, it wasn't haunted, just full of memories of a happy family long gone. "Man, we are not going to an old burnt down mansion. Chances are someone owns that place now and they don't want people dying by falling through burnt down floor boards." Birds sighed and left the teens to bicker, however, he couldn't shake the thought of what the boy with common sense said. Why hadn't the city bulldozed the old decrepit building? Birds had seen it before, a building would be abandoned, or the person living there didn't have anyone to pass the building on to and the city would repurpose it. Birds shook the thoughts from his head, he had a fence to meet he didn't need to deal with this right now, but it was something to look into later.
Birds sat in the library, sat in a pile of old newspapers from the time of the fire that happened to that old mansion. Not surprising most of the newspapers in the city covered the story. Not many gave details other then what birds knew already, 50 some odd casualties, no idea if there were any survivors, so on and so forth. Birds wish he could get his hands on the police reports they would probably be more informative. That is till Birds found a paper that didn't focus on the fire but more about the people that the house belonged to. Birds about jumped for joy but remembered where he was. The journalist covered the names of all the people that died in the fire or after in the hospital. The article also explained that the family was from old money and came from Germany. Birds folded the paper, tucked it into his sweater, and left the library. He now had to find the Journalist.
The journalist was surprisingly still alive, or maybe that was supposed to be unsurprising. The Journalist's wife was shocked to see Birds on her doorstep. even the journalist was as well. Birds supposed he should have phoned before going but he had no sense of time, nor did he have access to a phone. Birds lied to the couple he explained that he was working on a school project on fired within the recent time in the city, but he wanted to know more about the survivors of them.  This proved to be helpful as the journalist helped birds flip through his old notes. Birds found his name on the very small list of survivors, his sister was alive, but in a mental hospital, not too surprising but it still made birds happy to know she survived. And his cousin... his closest cousin was alive and the owner of the land where the mansion stood.
It took Birds 3 months and 2 weeks to find his cousin. He worked for the military and was stationed half way across the country. This was an inconvenience to Birds. As he had no way to make it across the country, so he had to save money. There was also the chance of his cousin not being there and shipped out to fight in some foreign country.
It took Birds a few more days to get to his cousin, and the meeting was something Birds was more accustomed to.  Birds cousin held him pinned to the wall by his throat. Birds was not surprised in the slightest that his cousin didn't recognize him. After all, it had been 7 years. Birds could barely get his words out to say his name, well his old name, the one he barely remembered. His cousin let him go then. "Shit"
