Signings Galore
It's not just the men's first team bringing in the new recruits...
Tumblr media
Elizabeth Terland - Striker
Terland is a free signing from Brighton and Hove Albion, and a much needed reinforcement to the centre forward position. 17 goals and 1 assist in 35 appearances last season would be a very welcome addition to our goal output, and at 23 there's still a lot of time for development from the Norwegian.
Tumblr media
Melvine Malard - Striker/Wing Forward
The loanee from Lyon had a great impact as a striker and left wing forward last season. Many of us hoped we'd make this a permanent move, and I'm so relieved we have. Like Geyse she has bundles of technical skill, as well as a nice balance and sense of timing to be able to use both feet and her head on goal.
At 24, Malard has her best years ahead of her, and hopefully leading United to success.
Tumblr media
Dominique Janssen - Centre Back
The Dutch international has moved from Wolfsburg to join United as a new, more senior centre back choice for Marc Skinner.
29 year old Janssen spent four years in England with Arsenal, before moving to Wolfsburg in 2019. She has 112 caps for the Netherlands, won Euro 2017, and has played in the women's Champions League final twice with Wolfsburg - losing to Lyon and Barcelona respectively.
Tumblr media
Anna Sandberg - Left Back/Left Wing
This is my personal favourite signing of the bunch. 21 year old Anna Sandberg of BK Hacken. The roving left back / wing back / left wing offers some strong offense down that side, similar to Jayde Riviere on the right. She's pacey and tenacious, and dovetailed with Gabby George's physicality and composure will offer Skinner genuine LB options this year rather than the make-do approach of RB Hannah Blundell.
Tumblr media
Simi Awujo - Centre Midfield
The youngest signing of the bunch so far, Canadian international Simi Awujo is just 20 years old. This is her first professional contract, a three year deal, having just left USC Trojans - the University of Southern California women's side - a year before graduation.
The defensive midfielder has made 19 appearances for Canada in two years, and is a promising prospect for the future. With United losing both captain Katie Zelem and Irene Guerrero, a new DM/6 is very welcome and guaranteed gametime. On paper you'd think a double pivot with Lisa Naalsund is the immediate option, but with the likes of Grace Clinton and Emma Watson back... there are options.
youtube
Beyond these five there are rumours about Leicester goalkeeper Lize Kop. The Dutch keeper has two years left on her deal, and it's an odd one - United paid good money for Phallon Tullis-Joyce. She played well in the Conti Cup last season. Surely she's our number 1 now with Mary Earps gone? She deserves a shot at it.
Wouldn't surprise me to bring someone else in though, use them, and lost PTJ next summer. INEOS are so focused on the men's team and the Old Trafford rebuild that the women's team might be getting overlooked. I'll do a post after the Community Shield match review about Dan Ashworth's recent meeting with the women at St George's Park.

I read 156 books and graphic novels in 2023. 119 graphic novels, 37 books. 25 non-fiction, 131 fiction. 69 graphic novels, 50 graphic mangas. 15 re-reads.
Starting in March with Unbroken, I started reading a number of books about World War II. I think I had, as ever a goal to read more non-fiction and since there are so many books on the 2 World Wars, they are often the ones that I’m able to check out from the library without a super long wait list. Then Oppenheimer came out this summer so I was more intrigued and decided to read the basis for the film (which is atypical for me outside of comics). Following Unbroken I read a few spy books, Operation Mincemeat and Double Cross in May by Ben McIntyre that were super interesting.
I had previously read The Confidence Men about 2 British POWs from WWI who escaped a Turkish POW camp by (among other things) a Ouija board. I had started reading The Diary of Anne Frank/Diary of a Young Girl sometime this past year I think and finally finished it near the end of the year and Victor Frankl’s Man’s Search For Meaning in October. I started listening to The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich in November or December and read for my family’s book club The Woman Who Smashed Codes about Elizabeth Friedman and her husband who developed cryptology in the US between World War I and II and was treated pretty wretchedly by the US government for her efforts. This was in no small part due to J. Edgar Hoover, who seems to be more and more a villain every time I have the misfortune of encountering him in books and other media.
A manga series I had started last year, The Promised Neverland, I’m close to finishing (I believe there are 20 volumes, which isn’t super long for a manga series. Full Metal Alchemist is 20-something volumes if I remember correctly) and I finally finished Hikaru no Go about a teenager who accidentally finds himself competing in the Japanese game Go due to a haunted Go board in his grandfather’s attic. A web comic that my wife got me interested in, Lore Olympus, retells the story of Persephone and Hades with a combination of contemporary and antiquity culture. The comic is broken up into “seasons” and the second season was recently finished so I wanted to read up to that point while waiting for the end of the third season. Unfortunately, it was long enough ago that I had read up to the end of the first season I ended up having to start over. But this was good as there were a number of things I caught the second time through and appreciated more on a re-read.
I also read the 4th and 5th Wheel of Time books for the second time this past year, which was an interesting experience. There were a lot of things I remembered incorrectly because of the 25ish years since I read them initially. I don’t think I’m going to read the entire series all the way through again, but I might read book 6. I finished re-reading The Sandman (partly due to the release of the Netflix series) and went on a kick of other Vertigo (an imprint of DC Comics that focused on non-superhero books, more adult and more creator-controlled that is now largely if not entirely defunct) titles (the Dead Boy Detectives, Hellblazer, Swamp Thing). Don’t know where I’ll go with that. Also read a decent amount of Spider-Verse comics (mostly Spider-Gwen but one big crossover book that was sort of the culmination of the Spider-Verse storylines (I think?)) that was interesting. Spider-Gwen is a great comic that has yet to lead to the frustration I felt with the later Miles Morales books.
Nagata Kabi’s memoirs about self-esteem, her fraught relationship with her parents, alcoholism and eating problems is both interesting and very frustrating. I am very lucky to not have hardly any of her emotional, mental and health issues that are wound up together but reading her mangas it is hard not to want to shake her when she seems to recover from one life-threatening catastrophe only to work herself into another. I’m morbidly curious about her later volumes about pancreatitis.
Lastly, there were some books on Arthur and some non-fiction or books by African-American authors that I had intended to start or finish that I’m dragging my heels on. We’ll see what happens in the next year with that.

RBI
Restaurant Brands International Inc. (RBI) is a Canadian-American multinational fast food holding company. It was formed in 2014 by the $12.5 billion merger between American fast food restaurant chain Burger King and Canadian coffee shop and restaurant chain Tim Hortons, and expanded by the purchases of Popeyes and Firehouse Subs in 2017 and 2021, respectively. The company is the fifth-largest operator of fast food restaurants in the world after Subway, McDonald's Corporation, Starbucks and Yum! Brands. They are based alongside Tim Hortons in Toronto (previously Oakville, Ontario).[4] For multiple purposes, Burger King, Popeyes, and Firehouse Subs retain their existing operations and headquarters, with BK and Popeyes in Miami, and Firehouse in Jacksonville. The 2014 merger focused primarily on expanding the international reach of the Tim Hortons brand and providing financial efficiencies for both companies.
3G Restaurant Brands Holdings LP, an affiliate of the Brazilian investment company 3G Capital, owns a 32% stake in Restaurant Brands International.[5] The company is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange and the Toronto Stock Exchange. In March 2023, Joshua Kobza was named the CEO of Restaurant Brands International, replacing Jose Cil, who had held the role since 2019.
History
[edit]
On August 24, 2014, American fast-food chain Burger King announced that it was in negotiations to merge with the Canadian coffee shop and restaurant chain Tim Hortons, who was owned by Wendy's from 1995 to 2006.[6] The proposed merger would involve a tax inversion into Canada, with a new holding company majority-owned by Burger King's current majority-owner, 3G Capital, and the remaining shares in the company held by current Burger King and Tim Hortons shareholders. A Tim Hortons representative stated that the proposed merger would allow Tim Hortons to leverage Burger King's resources for international growth; the two chains would retain separate operations post-merger.[7] News of the proposal caused Tim Hortons' shares to increase in value by 28 percent.[8]
On August 25, 2014, Burger King officially confirmed its intent to acquire Tim Hortons Inc. in a deal totaling CDN$12.5 billion (US$11.4 billion).[9] 3G Capital purchased the company at $65.50 per share, and existing shareholders received $65.50 in cash and 0.8025 shares in the new holding company: per-share—all-cash ($88.50) and all-shares (3.0879) options would also be available. Due to its iconic status in Canadian culture, CEO Marc Caira reassured the integrity of Tim Hortons following the purchase, stating that the acquisition would "enable us to move more quickly and efficiently to bring Tim Hortons' iconic Canadian brand to a new global customer base".[8][10]
Although tax inversions, a process in which a company moves its headquarters to a country with a lower tax rate but maintains the majority of their operations in their previous location, had been a recent financial trend, it did not have as much of an impact on Burger King's reincorporation in Canada. The corporate tax rate in the United States was at the time 39.1% (since then lowered to 21%), while Canada's corporate tax rate is only 26%; however, Burger King had already used various sheltering techniques to reduce its tax rate to 27.5%. As a high-profile instance of tax inversion, news of the merger was criticized by U.S. politicians, who felt that the move would result in a loss of tax revenue to foreign interests, and could result in further government pressure against inversions (which had, until the Burger King merger, been primarily invoked by pharmaceutical firms).[11][12][7][9] 3G Capital co-founder Alex Behring denied that the merger was tax-related, stating that it was "fundamentally about growth and creating value through accelerated expansion".[13]
The deal was approved in Canada by the Competition Bureau on October 28, 2014, ruling that the deal was "unlikely to result in a substantial lessening or prevention of competition".[14] The deal was approved by Minister of Industry James Moore on December 4, 2014; the two companies agreed to conditions, requiring that the Burger King and Tim Hortons chains retain separate operations, not combine locations in Canada and the United States, maintain "significant employment levels" at the Oakville headquarters, and ensure that Canadians make up at least 30% of Tim Hortons' board of directors.[15] Tim Hortons shareholders approved the merger on December 9, 2014; the same day, it was announced that the new holding company would be known as Restaurant Brands International, and trade under the ticker symbol QSR. Vice-chairman Marc Caira felt that the merger was the "next chapter" for Tim Hortons, envisioning a "bolder, more assertive, and dynamic Tim Hortons in the future" alongside its prospects for international expansion.[13][16]
In February 2024, RBI said it anticipates 40,000 restaurants worldwide by 2028, up from 31,070 across its various brands at the end of fiscal 2023.[17]
Acquisitions
[edit]
On February 21, 2017, RBI announced its intent to acquire Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen for US$1.8 billion at US$79 per share.[18] On March 27, 2017, the deal closed with RBI purchasing Popeyes at $79 per share via Orange, Inc, an indirect subsidiary of RBI.[19]
On November 15, 2021, RBI announced its intent to acquire Firehouse Subs for US$1 billion.[20] The acquisition was completed on December 15, 2021.[21]

Until early 2019, Daniel Schwartz served as CEO of the company, with previous Tim Hortons CEO Marc Caira being vice-chairman and director. In January 2019, Jose Cil was named the CEO of Restaurant Brands International, and Schwartz was named the executive chairman of the company.[26]
In August 2020, Berkshire Hathaway disclosed that they had completely sold their stake in RBI

Miraculous Drum Corps AU Pt. 1
**if you know what drum corps is you can just skip to the lists at the bottom lol**
The perfect kind of people to be superheroes are also surprisingly the perfect kind of people to spend all summer working towards a common goal. And I realized, the miraculous kids, if aged up a bit would make a fantastic drum corps, so I created Miraculous Drum Corps.
I did realize Most people don’t actually know what drum corps is so I’m doing a lil ~introduction series~ to the concept and to My Take on it.
((for a point of reference, drum corps is essentially intensified marching band without the woodwinds. I marched color guard in DCI for five years so it’s clear I know the most about it lol. if a character isn’t listed they might be added later if I figure them out. this also looks more formal than it is.))
Drum Corps is a summer long activity beginning mid-May and ending the first week of August, typically broken down by 4-6 weeks of intensive 14-hour training days (see also: All Days, Move-ins, Pre-Tour), and 4-6 weeks of traveling cross country, driving all night, rehearsing in the day and performing at night in front of thousands of people. There’s about 150 people aged 16-22 (21 is the age out :( sad times being ‘old’) on the field making up the corps and they travel in tour buses from high school to high school where they rehearse and perform said show at local arenas.
A typical move-in day can look typically as (from what i remember at BK lol): 8am wake/breakfast 9am block (typically dance and basics for color guard, and visual for brass/battery, pit is always playing) 1pm lunch 2pm block again (typically show stuff or music and sectionals for hornline? color guard is probably learning choreo for the show) 5pm dinner (most corps do an hour dinner but 1.5 dinners at bk saved my soul) 6:30pm ensamble (all sections come together on the main field to put together what they’ve been working on all day) 10pm snack/break (when you shower and get ready for bed. don’t forget to drink water and stretch!!! also some self-led rehearsing happens here too. better every day!) 12am lights out! get some sleep!!!
lather rinse repeat.  a typical back to back show day could look like (once again BK is a p good corps, having marched a nonfinalist corps, bOY is the experience different):
11am wake up/’breakfast’ 12pm sectionals 2pm ensamble 3:30pm run through 5:50pm butts-in-seats (always 10 min before!) 6pm depart for show 7:20pm arrive at show 9:17pm Perform! (from there post-show they evaluate when BIS is going to be, on account of  how long it takes the front ensamble to reload the truck, typically just less than two hours) 11:10pm BIS 11:20pm depart for next housing site (typically one or two stops for a six hour) 5:30am arrive at new housing site, unload stuff to blow up air mattresses on gym floor, sleep until wake up (this case would be hmmmm about 11 again? BK was p nice about our sleep time compared to sOME oTHER corps)
So who’s doing this? 160-ish members with about 20 staff members at a given time, as well as about 20 volunteers (oh boy that’s a big ol guess). The corps itself is where all of our characters are going to be in one of the following (no none of them are drum majors):
Brass: A majority of the corps is in the hornline, consisting of both high and low brass (traditionally 3-valved instruments. Trombones were only allowed as of 2017!). Typically, trumpets, mellophones, euphoniums, and tubas (some corps march baritones but honestly i don’t know enough to even be able to tell a difference between baritones and euphs. they might be the same thing.)
Trumpet: Max (I will fight people on this) Mellophone: Adrien, Wayhem Euphonium: Nino, Alya Tuba: Marc, Ivan
Percussion: Percussion is divided into two sections, one being the battery who plays their drums and march and the front ensamble (see also: pit). The battery consists of a snare line, quad line, and bass line. I think only one corps still has a cymbal line, but it’s my AU so yes, Miraculous has one. The front ensamble is made of marimbas, vibraphones, at least one synth player, a drum set? oh well that’s in the rack, sometimes a bassist is there? We had an electric violin my second year too. They play the instruments Too Big to march with and sit (typically) on the front of the field between the rest of the corps and the drum majors.
Front Ensamble: Kagami (marimba), Zoe (vibes) Battery: Luka (quads), Kim (bass 4), Alix (cymbals)
Color Guard: Color guard my beloved!! The ~visual~ part of the corps, spinning (traditionally) flags, sabres, and rifles, as well as whatever else the show calls for. I’ve danced with fabric, spun flags where the pole is rope, double swing flags, crosses, and I’ve seen some even crazier stuff. There’s typically about 40 people with a few alternates spin and dance through the show
Color guard: Marinette, Chloe, Rose, Juleka, Lila, Nathaniel

3/2 Book Deals
happy (slightly belated) March, everyone! I know everyone is saying the same thing, but February really did zip by and I can’t believe we’re already here in March again. I’m actually back with more deals sooner than I have been lately! There are a ton of great books on sale today, so I knew I had to make the time. :)
I don’t actually think I’ve read any of the books on this list other than Trouble the Saints (which was super interesting!), but there are a lot I’ve had on my TBR for a while! I loved K. Ancrum’s The Wicker King, so I’ve been really curious about The Weight of the Stars. I also hear such mixed things about Jenn Lyons’ series that I’m never sure if I want to actually try them or not, haha. Have you guys read any of these books? Feel free to share any thoughts on them. :)
How are you all doing? I really hope you are all doing okay, I know things have still been... meh, lately, but I hope some things are maybe looking up for you guys. Anything new happen? Let me know!
Have a wonderful day, everyone, happy reading!
