However, when you are treated to a Manta Mating Train, you experience an entirely different side of these winged giants. In a mating train, a group of male mantas compete for the attention of a female manta, with the resulting display nothing short of spectacular! The female manta takes lead and sprints ahead with a train of suiters in pursuit - diving, twirling, spinning and rolling as they battle for poll position. The energy and excitement of this acrobatic performance is simply captivating. Add your voice to show Canadian ministers that they must vote for protection. Overfishing has caused a rapid decline in mako shark populations, and today, they are globally endangered. And yet Canada is on the verge of voting against their protection. After showing great leadership by becoming the first G20 country in the world to enact a ban on the trade of shark fins, it is disappointing and saddening to see Canada abandoning sharks when it matters by threatening to vote against their inclusion in CITES appendix II. You can make a difference by demanding that Canada change their position and vote ‘YES’ to add mako sharks to Appendix II of CITES. I hovered inches above this male humpback as he hung head down in the water column and belted out this haunting song for all the ocean to hear. The vibrations produced from this approximately 70,000 pound animal reverberated through my entire body and it was an experience that I have dreamt of my whole life and yet, I never knew it was going to be this intense, special and awe-inspiring. The song was so powerful that I wasn’t even sure if I had remembered to press record once I got back to the surface. Luckily, we did. Only male humpback whales sing and throughout the season various populations all sing the same song. They can be heard singing for hours, repeating the song several times. This is another gift from nature that I am excited to share with you courtesy of @sealegacy. We had such a powerful launch of three great ocean conservation organizations coming together in New York City last night. Thanks to all of those who attended and who continue to support the work we do. Sharks play such an important role in the ocean, yet their populations are at a serious risk. Thankfully, we’re starting to see a change—a change where sharks are becoming more protected. But we still have quite a bit of work to do. Please speak up sharks and continue growing as conscious consumers with us. 💙// Photo and caption from @shawnheinrichs ・・・ WORTH MORE ALIVE 🦈🙏🏻💙 The work to protect sharks and other wildlife threatened by trade started back in 1973, when the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (@CITES) was formed. Every 3 years since then member nations and organizations meet at the Conference of the Parties (CoP). Proposals are made then to list various wild species on different lists called appendices that either ban (Appendix I) or control (Appendix II) their international trade. The first shark species listed on CITES Appendix II were whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) and basking sharks (Cetorhinus maximus) in 2001, followed by great white sharks in 2004. After that CITES parties were unwilling to list more shark species on its appendices for almost a decade. But after years of data collection and advocacy, the parties took a sharp turn in the right direction and, in the past six years, have listed 9 commercially important shark species on Appendix II. Exporting countries now must obtain permits to prove that trade of sharks listed on Appendix II is legal, traceable and not detrimental to the survival of these species. Scalloped hammerheads (Sphyrna lewini), smooth hammerheads (S. zygaena), great hammerheads (S. mokarran), oceanic whitetip sharks (Carcharhinus longimanus), porbeagle sharks (Lamna nasus), silky sharks (C. falciformis), pelagic thresher sharks (Alopias pelagicus), bigeye thresher sharks (A. superciliosus) and common thresher sharks (A. vulpinus) are now on that list.
