I'm here to suggest a third, funnier possibility: it's Sam the one who does it without meaning to. Some journalist asks about Bob and John in a demeaning way, trying to set him up to be mean on air bc it's public knowledge that Sam doesn't have the best relationship with John, Sam sees right through it, and defends them bc John is an asshole but #loveislove or whatever.

I'm a huge "John Walker is so oblivious to his own attraction to men that this extends to him being oblivious to ANY men's attraction to men" truther, and this makes me believe that he would 100% not understand that Bob's gay for so long.

As he utters these words John frowns in perplexity, immediately trying to rebut. "But you and Bucky aren't even that close, and besides he's a gu-" His train of thoughts derails in its tracks. He notices Bob looking at him with a timid expression on his face.

That's when John's curiosity about Bob would get to an interesting twist.
