do you use scopes at all times for a boltaction rifle or is there a range of distance where youd need one?

Most shooters have the capacity to put lead on target with iron sights up to 200yd, though I'll say that not many bother to learn to shoot at that distance. I can hit targets up to 500yd reliably, which is USMC sniper standard and the range I was trained at for iron sights. If I wear my prescription glasses I can bump this up to 575yd-600yd, but I fucking hate wearing those things and I haven't shot on iron sights in a long time.

Most people put scopes on rifles for anything past 150yd. Some do it for anything past 100yd just to be safe, especially if they're using the rifle for hunting. It's better to be overly cautious than risk wounding an animal instead of killing it. I personally think optics for distances of 150yd+ is fine, 100yd+ is a bit overkill.

Generally if someone has good practice with a rifle then they'll be able to reliably shoot up to 200-ish yards on iron sights, depending on how good their eyesight is.
