I went to see a midnight showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show with a shadow cast last weekend and I truly feel that my brain chemistry has been changed.

My mother went every Halloween for years in her 20s and always spoke so highly of her experience. I grew up listening to the soundtrack and couldn’t wait until I was old enough to go alone and experience what had been so highly spoken about all my life.

And it did not disappoint. The movie was so much more… everything… than I expected but in the best way possible. As a bisexual women who really thrives off sexual and gender ambiguity, I felt the safest I had ever been in that theater. Everyone was so themselves and just wanted to have the best night of their life. The costumes by the audience were jaw dropping and I couldn’t help but feel that I was destined to be at that show on that night.

It’s also so comforting and beautiful to think about how this movie was made 49 years ago and touches on topics like cross-dressing and non-monogamy in not only a respect way but also in such a positive way. It introduced a whole generation to androgyny and the ability to blur the lines of gender and sexuality.

I now itch to go back to another showing and experience the same high I did last weekend
