went a lil crazy with my silly lil braineph Wicked AU designs 🤭💚 an instance of my greatest interests colliding into one big explosion

design notes + indivs ⬇️

so maaaybe it’s obvious that I love Wicked and that 100% includes its costume department. I wanted these designs to closely resemble Elphaba and Glinda’s iconic act 2 outfits while also retaining parts of Brain and Ephemer’s outfits

Funny enough, Brain’s colour scheme (in the title screen art) lines up pretty similarly with Elphaba’s dress already, a mix of dark purples and hints of lighter tones and grays. Keeping Elphaba’s asymmetry was a must for me too.

That being said, I didn’t want Brain to just wear the same exact thing, so I gave him some special treatment by leaning into a goth cyberpunk look, which I think really suits him while still fitting the story/setting. The circuit board pattern was lightly inspired by these super cool circuit board bodysuits

Eph’s essentially wearing a fusion between his clothes and Glinda’s ballgown (the scarf stays!). Similarly to Brain, the swirls/circles that were already in his design meshed pretty well with Glinda’s aesthetic. He’s the swirly marshmallow he was always meant to be 😆

I wanted to keep the bubble aesthetic so musical gown it is, though there are some pink highlights to kinda honor the movie gown/original The Wizard of Oz gown (plus it slays)

His crown is based on sections of the khml logo. I’m assuming it’s either for Scala as a whole, or his family, and it looks regal enough anyway so it felt right for him to wear

He’s in wedge heels, imagine him a bit shorter! He and Brain kinda have that Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel height difference going on lmaooo

Notes:

I’ve essentially merged Eph’s outfit with Glinda’s once again, seeing as this is the “main” or most iconic design. If/when I get around to the other outfits I think I’ll just tweak them to make them entirely new standalone fits

I wanted to somewhat incorporate the curves/rounded parts of the ML logo in the dress proper since it lines up pretty well with the bubble/circular detailing. The crown’s the same as in the previous design, except now with added details to match Glinda’s in the movie

I love how I said braineph Wicked AU can be my ugly low effort project but then I accidentally had too much fun 😘

So there’s this thing from the musical that’s stuck with me for years. I don’t think all Elphie and Glinda actors do it but Donna Vivino and Alli Mauzey (my favs) reach to each other during this line, then Donna clutches her chest. It’s just such a beautiful touch I love so much (the movie poster having Glinda and Elphaba reaching to each other in almost the same way really validated me), so naturally, I had to do a version for the boys too 😁

and then we have Thank Goodness, which I think is a song that gets a bad rep often because not everyone picks up that it’s about more than what the lyrics say. It’s about hiding behind a smile and a life you’ve made even though you’re not actually happy with how things have turned out, and choosing to be someone people can, in Glinda’s words: “look to in order to raise their spirits”. And boy, ain’t that just so Ephemer core 🫶

As usual, I love the musical’s costume, slightly altered to suit Eph. But I also love the movie (part 2) version!! (…assuming that is for Thank Goodness lol) It’s so sparkly and a really fun mix between the bubble dress and pink movie gown, while still being its own thing. I don’t think I quite do it justice but you get the idea!

I liked this part from the trailer. Literal jumpscare 😆 (I might be a little excited for the movie. Just a little bit 🤞☺️)

Brain does get to be happy in this AU…sometimes ☺️

Notes:

Basically I’ve fused most of Brain’s outfit into Elphaba’s movieverse! and musicalverse! introductory outfits, leaning a bit more into movieverse! because of how similar it already was to Brain’s aesthetic, with the black layers and multiple buttons (who woulda thought they’d have that in common? :D)

The wrist cuffs are a subtle homage to the poofy ones in the movie while also being visually somewhat similar to Master’s Defender’s hilt, and just overall looking like the sleeve cuffs Brain already has

Interestingly enough, I think Elphie’s outfit changes slightly at some point between arriving at Shiz and speaking with Morrible, and for what plot reason? No idea. But that’s a whole other tangent.

Like Elphie, I imagine Brain loosens up quite a bit as the act progresses, so he starts out with this most “put-together” and layered look

I also couldn’t resist giving him the iconic movie glasses, they’re so cool, plus it makes him look so cute and doe-eyed, even though he’d usually be glaring and scowling outside of this particular scene haha

Can you tell I’m a big fan of how they handled The Wizard and I in the movie? 😄 But part of my heart will always belong to the very intimate live performance of Elphaba sitting on her luggage to reveal her innermost desires directly to the audience.

And the return of Morrible!Ava yaayy yippee!! I’ve said it before, but the fur and ruffles do her a lot of favours. This outfit is meant to be a lot simpler compared to the outfits she’d wear as press secretary (aka her outfit in Scala [Emerald City]), which resembles her Foreteller robe much more

I think I almost didn't manage to get even close to this one but glad I could finish this one.

My original plan shall stay in the oven till next time since my schedule was a bit chaotic to finish that one but for now have this something that I hope brings out a smile.

Brain as Elphaba, whose story goes under intense historical revisionism, ultimately having the truths of his life twisted and forgotten by the masses

Ephemer as Glinda, who rises to power and is adored by the masses, but is ultimately stuck as the figurehead of the regime that silenced his friend, rendering him unable to provide his side of the story in full

one (of the many) fun parts about braineph Wicked AU is that it’s pretty meta in reference to the ways Eph and Brain were treated by the fandom when they were first introduced. Trustworthy or untrustworthy? A friend or a suspect? So on and so forth. But there’s always more than meets the eye

every time there’s news about the Wicked movie, I think “oh yeah maybe I should fix up my braineph Wicked AU designs” and then I just Don’t

At least I actually got a sketch down back when the trailer dropped! I’ll get around to at least cleaning them up a bit and coloring them eventually. Eventually.
