Sega Mega Drive - Spider-Man VS The Kingpin

Back when this game was released, my father lived in the UK, and at that time, most Mega Drive games cost 40 to 45 pounds however, for some reason, Spiderman cost 59 pounds!! Talk about milking the name and taking money from poor kids who had to save like mad to afford this game. As it happens, I never did get Spider-Man as a child, but now I have it, and while it's good in some ways, I can't help but think it's not aged too well.

The main problem with Mega Drive Spiderman (apart from not being a conversion of the great Sega arcade game) is that it's all too slow and hard. The story goes that The Kingpin (Wilson Fisk) has planted a bomb somewhere in New York and has somehow convinced everyone that Spider-Man (Peter Parker) was the one responsible. Now, Spider-Man has 24 hours to locate the bomb and disarm it before the city is blown to bits. Poor Spidy just can't go over to the bomb and switch it off. Oh, No. Instead, he has to go through the trouble of tracking down some of his other enemies who are holding the keys needed to disarm the bomb.

So Spidy heads out into New York City to find the keys. Now you'd expect Spidy to take out only the bad guys, but no, in this game, everything is out to get you, including the rats. Spidy can take out his enemies by giving them a good head smack with his fists and, of course, by shooting his web at them or using it to swing across the screen to do a flying kick right into the enemy's face. Be very careful about how much web you use, though, because as you'd expect, it's on a meter. Once that runs out, you've got to replenish it. You can do this by collecting canisters throughout the stages, however, you don't really get much. Another way is to buy more web. But where do you get the money? By taking photos of your enemies, of course, and selling them to the Daily Bugle. Be careful, though, you only get 3 photo chances per stage, and only those of the boss will get you the big bucks.

So the game is sounding pretty good, right? Well, here comes the issues. For a start, you are timed to complete the game. If the counter reaches 0 before you disarm the bomb, then it's game over. I hate games with timers. Secondly the boss attacks are a real pain in the arse. Many a time, it would seem as if you aren't even harming them until you figure out that one special weak spot that can cause damage. Guaranteed you'll have your arse handed to you on most of the bosses first few times you battle them. "That's not such a big deal," I hear you say. Well, actually, it is because every time you die, you lose 2 hours from the bomb clock, meaning if you die a certain number of times, it's going to be impossible to complete the game. But wait, it's not only the bosses that will give you a hard time, but the regular enemies will as well. Yes, Spider-Man is way too difficult for its own good and not in a positive way either. It's just plain annoying in my opinion.
