Let me just say, if you are in the US and you want to go into writing or publishing for your career — including writing, editing, proofreading, etc — do yourself a favor and learn Chicago. Learn APA. Hell, learn AMA or AP. Why? Because those are what gets used in professional fields.
I have my degree in creative writing, and not once in all my years of education did any English teacher ask us or teach us to use Chicago, because in English Academia in the US they use MLA. It's basic, and it's accessible, which makes it great for students who are only just starting to learn research skills and how to write papers.
But the thing is, publishing doesn't use MLA.
NO ONE uses MLA except English academia.
If you go and try to get a job in publishing & editing, they will expect you to know Chicago. That's the professional standard in just about every publishing house in America. A strong grasp on Chicago style is a required skill in just about every editing job listing I have ever looked at. There are also a lot of editing & proofreading jobs out there for medical journals, which require understanding of AMA (American Medical Association) (note that these are also often limited to people with medical education, like medical students and graduates). Scientific & tech research tends to favor APA (American Psychological Association). If you're getting into journalism, you want to look into AP (Associated Press).
Knowing these style guides — at least one of them, minimum — are considered basic and essential skills if your career is going to involve the printed word in any capacity. You want to learn marketable job skills? Professional style guides are a great place to start.
If you want to start learning more about style guides, the Purdue University's Online Writing Lab (Purdue OWL) has publicly accessible basic guides for all the major styles. There are also guidebooks and websites for all the major styles, but they can be expensive to access. Unfortunately, if you want to get into publishing, you kinda have to just consider that a cost of getting into the business. Here's a list of starting points:
Chicago on the Purdue OWL
Chicago Manual of Style
AMA on the Purdue OWL
AMA Manual of Style on Oxford Academic
APA on the Purdue OWL
APA Style Website
AP on the Purdue OWL
AP Stylebook
MLA on the Purdue OWL
MLA Website
There's other style guides for legal writing and other fields as well, but I'm not as familiar with those. Again, the Purdue OWL is a great starting point.
Being taught MLA exclusively is such a disservice to students everywhere. Do yourself a favor — look into the professional fields that you are considering for careers, and see what kind of style guide they use. It will be listed on job listings, or you can look up what sort of job skills will be expected for XYZ job. Find out what style guide they prefer, and learn that.

I am having such an interesting time of working out story logistics for the edit of Cold Iron
(This trip needs to take several days and dragging out a 4-5 hour coastal trip to that, even with magical delays, might be a bit much)

Everytime I edit my stuff I feel like I'm deleting too much - and in reality the word count silently rises.
HOW?
I'LL NEVER FINISH IT LIKE THAT!!
