Book Review: Yours Truly by Abby Jimenez 🩺 💌 ✍🏻

Dr. Briana Ortiz’s life is seriously flatlining. Her divorce is just about finalized, her brother’s running out of time to find a kidney donor, and that promotion she wants? Oh, that’s probably going to the new man-doctor who’s already registering eighty-friggin’-seven on Briana’s “pain in my ass” scale. But just when all systems are set to hate, Dr. Jacob Maddox completely flips the game . . . by sending Briana a letter.

And it’s a really good letter. Like the kind that proves that Jacob isn’t actually Satan. Worse, he might be this fantastically funny and subversively likable guy who’s terrible at first impressions. Because suddenly he and Bri are exchanging letters, sharing lunch dates in her “sob closet,” and discussing the merits of freakishly tiny horses. But when Jacob decides to give Briana the best gift imaginable—a kidney for her brother—she wonders just how she can resist this quietly sexy new doctor... especially when he calls in a favor she can’t refuse.

The first chapter was an instant hook. I love it when an author has that *magic*. I appreciate the fact that this time, it’s the woman who’s the grumpy one and the man has a sunshine/calm vibe. Also, I love how detailed Abby went into portraying how anxiety works through Maddox. For someone reading it for pleasure, it may be all fillers. But to me who does have anxiety on a daily basis, I feel SEEN.

I enjoyed the dual POV and loved AJ’s writing style, above all else. I do wonder what Abby’s writing process is when switching character chapters. Does she have “Jacob” and “Brianna” modes separately? Because the individual voices are spot on. I feel a strong Brianna vibe in her chapters, and Jacob’s warmth and softness in his.

I love Jacob’s family dynamic! 😂 it’s hilarious, witty, and comical, but also close to reality — it has strong Modern Family vibes if you've ever seen that show. Speaking of Jacob, we love a guy who believes in and goes to therapy. 🩹🫂🫱🏻‍🫲🏽 I wish Jacob Maddox was real. 🥺🥺🥺

Admittedly, I'm not a big fan of contemporary romance nowadays. I tend to think that once you've read one, you've read them all. But Yours Truly had me giggling, laughing-snorting, and smiling. It kept me company at night while buried under blankets and with my hair up in a lazy bun. This novel was giving me strong contemporary "When Harry Met Sally vibes," which is one of my core-memory films. I LOVE IT.

I started this book not knowing much about it. But soon I realized that I seem to gravitate towards books with characters with (unpleasant) traits that I have. Those traits are not even disclosed anywhere in the synopsis, which makes it even more mind-blowing. Each time, it was like a sign from the Universe telling me to stop limiting myself to these traits.
