Bro starts his first adventure able to do a sword beam with a random sword some random old man hands him, so long as he’s at full health at least. Most of the other Links need the Master Sword.

Idk about anyone else but just to get to the first dungeon (which I’m still stuck on lmao) I relied on the sword beam a lot, it’s a very foundational & central skill in his arsenal.

OG Zelda game manual states the Magic Rod Rulie uses on his first adventure is a Wizzrobe’s (Joining Wild’s stealing-weapons-from-monsters club!) & initially uses it to cast something very similar to his sword beam even if he’s not as full health.

After reading a Magic Book, the spell he performs with the Magic Rod becomes a fire spell.

Bro finds a magic recorder that summons a cyclone & uses it for fast travel. Read that again.

Bro just does what works, he’s indeed scrappy as hell & strikes terror into the hearts of classically trained mages everywhere. 🤭

Also! Though all Links learn some form of a spin attack: it should be noted the move plays a particularly prominent role, plot-wise & mechanics-wise in alttp, Legend’s first adventure. So much so I’d say Legend’s charged spin attack as reactive crowd control is foundational & central to his entire battle style. It’s extremely difficult to land a hit otherwise! You gotta either run, button mash to parry with ur back against a wall till something hits…

… or you play it smart, watch everything in the room & plan your charged spins accordingly. Legend would be particularly adept at being outnumbered in an enclosed space. He can also throw pots, even shrubbery if he so desires, but well-timed spin-attacks are what truly carries him through his first few dungeons.

Meanwhile, I don’t know if this is just me, but I’ve tried & I just can’t reliably use the spin attack in botw/totk at all unless I stun the enemy first? Even when I try to do quick spins? Dunno if this has more to do with me, the 3D space, or monster ai, but either way I find it funny how Wild & Legend might use the same move for polar opposite purposes. 😆

Linked Universe Combat Guide (part 1)

Lmao I have been casually sitting on this for like two months now and since I'm procrastinating writing an essay, I've decided to post it.

Anyway, this came from my bajillion notes about the Chain's equipment so I could have fight scenes that involved more than "he swings his sword" x9. I also wanted to identify all the weird weapons the Links would have too bc I know they exist. And since adhd is the shark disorder and I need to do something bc I stop moving I die, I've made my notes coherent enough to inflict upon tumblr.

General Notes:

In terms of additional weapons/equipment, I’m not including the traditional bombs/bow + arrows/boomerangs bc basically everyone has a variant of these. All I'm doing is looking at the possible items collected on the quests and being like "yeah I could probably work out a way to kill monsters with that".

Also they all have one-handed sword and shield proficiency, so I'm not including that for each Link. However any other canonical or possible weapon proficiencies will be listed.

7 out of 9 Links are predominantly lefties. Generally, left-handed swordfighters are used to fighting right-handed swordfighters, but the same is not true vice versa, so they will have an advantage against most human enemies. -> any ambidextrous fighters in the group is largely a headcanon but go nuts w/ it.

Researched to the best of my ability (limited only by search terms and my own waning hyperfixation), but pls be aware I literally only played my first Zelda game ever in February 2024 so there’s a lot I don’t know and games I haven’t played. Both parts are open to peer review and active fact checking lmao

Half of this is canonical abilities and half is presumed abilities based off of said canon + other logical conclusions. I'm doing this from a lore-accurate sense, rather than a straight pull from the LU comics, simply bc that allows for a broader analysis of what they're technically all capable of. I've tried my best to keep my personal headcanons out of this either way.

This part covers Four, Hyrule, Legend and Wind, whose games I have not played, so my apologies if anything is missing or incorrect.

Four

I am actively making the argument that Four probably has knowledge about other fighting styles due to his trade as a black/weaponsmith. I do not have any specifics in mind bc I do not have the spoons for that deep-dive, but feel free to run with this however you want.

Sword techniques: -> spin attack + variants    -> great spin attack (repeated spins)    -> hurricane spin (same as above but temporarily induces dizziness) -> dash attack (requires pegasus boots) -> peril beam (only works when he's got 1 heart left) -> roll attack -> down thrust (requires Roc’s cape)

Obviously, Four's greatest strength is team combat w/ the Colours. By splitting, he's able to coordinate combat with easy tag-team attacks with a much lower risk of friendly fire compared to when fighting alongside members of the Chain. Group combat, quite obviously, is actually kinda hard bc it requires an increased amount of situational awareness that is often overridden by adrenaline. Thankfully, since Four and the Colours are literally the same person, this is mitigated by a LOT.

Seriously do not discount how Four's height is an advantage in combat. Being smaller/shorter means you have less body mass to speed up and slow down, so you have greater agility and speed. You're also harder to hit and better at close combat (short limbs take less time to block, attack, etc.)

Genuinely don't know if he's proficient in combat while on horseback. I've heard at least one of Four's games has an Epona, but I don't know if there's any mounted combat.

Additional Weapons/Equipment: -> power bracelets -> gust jar -> Cane of Pacci -> magnetic glove -> fire rod (I think? Fact check pls and thank) -> magic hammer -> pegasus boots -> Roc’s cape -> shovel (do not under any circumstances discount mundane weapons)

Hyrule

To start off, the most important thing to know about Hyrule is that he's a self-taught fighter.

No, seriously this is more important than you think but not for the reasons you may think. Self-taught fighters are scrappy as shit. Out of the entire Chain, Hyrule will be the first one to resort to fighting dirty. Have him clawing at people’s eyes, throwing dirt, and biting. When you grow up in a situation where survival is a thin line you don't want to cross, you’ll do anything to stay alive when you have to.

Spells: -> Shield: reduces damage by half -> Jump: self-explanatory -> Life: recovers health -> Fairy: shapeshifts into a fairy -> Fire: shoots fireballs from the end of his sword. (an aside, but this scene from the comic may be a variant of Fire? Fact check again lmao) -> Reflect: reflects magic attacks and strengthens his shield to temporarily block some physical attacks and most magical attacks -> Spell: can turn most enemies into Bots -> Thunder: summons lightning

Hyrule actually gained the ability to use magic in his second quest, so while he's probably well adapted to using it now and may default to using it when backed into a corner, he's still a capable swordsman without it.

He can canonically use Jump to perform a down thrust (like Four's) and a jump thrust (think Mario hitting bricks lmao),but there are so many ways to utilise this spell. Someone should teach Hyrule the Helm Splitter.

Additional Weapons/Equipment: -> power bracelets -> hammer -> this will sound stupid but ladder (again, never underestimate weird and mundane weapons.)

Legend

Legend gave me so much trouble, solely bc sir has too many games. Jesus Christ man.

I am once again happily arguing that due to Legend’s sheer experience, he probably has other weapon proficiencies outside of a one-handed sword + shield combo, but that’s entirely up to personal headcanons

A lot of the combat I could find is similar to Four's, in terms of sword techniques, so see above.

Once again for the class lmao, Legend has the most questing experience. While his section may seem small bc I don't want to rehash stuff I've already said, it's entirely on-brand for him to have tweaked a lot of this. Headcanons abound.

Additional Weapons/Equipment (Warning: brace yourself): -> literally the entire contents of his ring box. I'm not listing them. I don't even know what's in it, nor do I want to at this point. -> power bracelets/power glove/titan’s mitt -> hammer(s) -> pegasus boots -> Cane of Byrna -> Cane of Somaria -> hookshots -> long hook -> seed shooter (+ ember seeds, scent seeds, mystery seeds, gale seeds, & pegasus seeds) -> fire rod -> ice rod -> Rod of Seasons -> tornado rod -> sand rod -> Bombos medallion -> Ether Medallion -> Quake medallion -> magic powder -> shovel -> super net -> alternative tunics (attack or defensive enhancements) -> red shield (fire defence) -> Roc’s feather

Wind

Arguably has the best balance and proprioception of the group, which is extremely useful in many situations.

Once again, do not be afraid to use Wind’s height to his advantage. He has a slight detriment bc he’s still getting taller and going through puberty does screw up your proprioception, but I think if you’re using a sword that much, both against enemies and in sparring matches, he's probably still got a decent sense of his own balance and body.

I genuinely don’t know how the Phantom Sword works, sorry. I know it has some potential to slow time, but I’m not entirely sure about the mechanics behind that, nor if it’s still capable of such magic.

Wind’s Parry Attack:   Hmm this thing. It’s interesting. Note: no actual parrying with a shield is needed, which means it's kinda like BOTW's perfect dodge mechanic. -> Wind’s parry attack is like the Helm Splitter and Back Slice combined into one. If the attack is vertical, he does a Back Slice-esque attack. If the attack is horizontal, it’s a Helm Splitter. -> Additionally he has an ending blow like Twilight and Sky, which has a specific trigger.

Additional Weapons/Equipment: -> power bracelets -> deku leaf -> skull hammer -> grappling hook (!!!!! any rope dart combat video would make this brutal) -> shovel -> hookshot -> Wind’s weird magic armour spell -> Hyoi pears if you feel like world-building

1. How long ago did you start reading fanfiction? Writing fanfiction?

The first fanfiction i read was for The Lunar Chronicles when I was like 11?? and it was 100% on accident and it scarred me because it was a hardcore porn one with a period kink and i was like WHAT IS THIS??? OH MY GOD???? LMAOOOOO i didn’t pick it back up until i was 13-14 and really got into the Fairy Tail fandom. I still reread my favorites on ff.net cause i love them. 

As for writing, I wrote a horrible, terrible x-men fanfiction when I was twelve. 5. What are your fanfic pet peeves? Do they have a huge effect on whether or not you decide to read something?

Omniscient third person. I don’t like it. Like I can understand that it can be a little hard to stay in one person’s perspective but, in my opinion, if you can, it shows how disciplined you are as a writer. Plus, i just get so confused when I go from A’s thoughts to suddenly what B is thinking about A. 

When writers use ‘ ‘ instead of “ “. When writers put thoughts in ‘ ‘ instead of just italicizing them. It’s small things but like they just bother me sO MUCH. most of the time i can ignore it and try to enjoy but other times i just dip.

@espoir-et-reves !!!!! THEIR SHISAKU FICS ARE SO SO SO SO SO GOOD. And they have a warring states one going on THAT I AM SO OBSESSED WITH. 

@writer168 idk if they’re really “underrated” but THEY HAVE SUCH GREAT FICS ON AO3. Like theres an AU with sakura, kiba, and shino that i reread constantly because it just. is. so. fucking. GOOD. and they posted a new one that i’m YELLING about. 

@eggtoasties okay they only have 2 in the naruto fandom (one shisaku which is still ongoing) BUT THEIR WRITING STYLE IS SO NICE?? I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. I still go back and reread their shikasaku one cause UGH i can’t get enough. I love it.

17. How obsessively do you sit and stare at your fic after you’ve just posted and wait for feedback?

aha.. haha.. well. I check my email like three times an hour. its the first thing i check in the mornings too. I’m literally a whore for praise and literally eat up feedback like its going out of style. I also reread a lot of my stuff because i make so many mistakes and spelling errors, or the spacing is weird oR SOMETHING. plus, literally any and all comments make my day, i go back and reread them cause they just make me feel so tingly and warm like “wow. this person enjoyed the fic/my writing enough to tell me. thats HUGE!”

23. What’s your absolute favorite trope to write?

Angry, feral, bloodied, morally gray women. They aren’t bad guys, they’re probably the good guy, but that doesn’t mean they cant be fucking raging at the world with raw knuckles and blood on their teeth. I just love an angry woman who struggles with her emotions and just has so much inner conflict but that doesn’t take away from her character or badassery, it adds to it. 

24. What’s a trope that you’d like to never hear about as long as you live, let alone write?

The fake dating or miscommunication troupe. LIKE GUYS JUST TALK. AND TELL EACH OTHER OMFG. the entire like obliviousness of “nah they dont like me” while the They holds their hand and kisses their cheek. MOFO WHAT. it makes me so impatient and like mad HAAHHAHA. its probably because i’m a pretty confrontational person so seeing stuff like that just “cmon bro, USE YO HEAD.”

28. How do you deal with writing pressure (ie: pressure to update, negative comments, deadlines, etc)?

I have yet to receive a negative comment! Which i was really surprised about tbh. As for deadlines or pressure to update, i just kind of do whatever. I do set goals, but i set them flexible enough that hey, if i can’t do it, that’s okay. 

I have a lot of mini goals, like “i want to write this chapter and get it done this week” and then the large goal is “FINISH BY END OF MAY” so i have time. 

Actually, now that I think on it, the entire pressure to update thing is probably why i’m waiting until I have all of OL&W written to post it weekly,, cause well. I wouldn’t wanna leave you guys waiting as I tried to write and work out the next chapters and stuff, you know?

34. How much of yourself and your life experiences do you put into your writing? What do you think your readers’ image of you is?

None of my experiences match up to anything I write tbh,,, probably the only thing that is me in my writing is maybe the emotional turmoil? I’m pretty emotionally and mentally mature because from a pretty young age i started forming my own opinions, started looking into the world around us and being like “dude what the fuck this is not what disney advertised”. Then i started talking (read: arguing and debating) with my dad about a lot of it. So, like emotions are kind of hard for me. Like i’m pretty good at controlling them or understanding them, but still. idk its hard to explain ig.

Like the weight of stress, the anger, the sadness. It’s kind of therapeutic to write. Cause i don’t know how to put those feelings to verbal words so writing them really helps. 

As for my readers’ image? Probably like some kind of hunched over figure typing away in the dark with a maniacal grin on their face. I honestly don’t know AHHAHAHA but it is fun to think about. I think they’d see me as someone with potential but a lot of room to grow and someone who is imperfect but in a charming way LMAOOOO

38. What does your writing process look like? How chaotic is it on a scale of 1 (very tame) to 10 (you can’t handle this kind of chaos)?

I’m gonna be real honest. Its probably like a 2. I’m a bit of a control freak so I almost always go in chronological order, my writing is pretty linear. Unless, i get bored and jump to one of my fav parts. It's pretty much i sit down, i open the doc, read over my notes and just start writing. 

It’s a little boring to explain AHAHAHA but once i get into the groove of things its really fucking great, I can like feel myself in the world, I can feel what i want the characters to, i love it. I catch myself mouthing the words as i type too, which i find hilarious.

39. What’s something about your writing that you pride yourself on?

I rather like how raw my writing is sometimes. Which might sound really vain, but i do like the way i word things or describe things. I love juxtaposition and repetition, or making a good ole circle back to some minute detail that wouldn’t stand out until i repeat it at the end and you’re like “omg” AHAHAHAHA.

Like those little poetic snippets or certain wording i just sit back and go “damn thats kinda good nadia! go you!’ HAHAHA  

40. How did you come up with the idea for The Intimacy Of Being Understood?

AAAAA this fic is like my first child, my pride and joy LMAO

so the idea initially came when i was reading some fic, idk if it was even naruto, but i was like “i don't like this, but i do like the rain symbolism.” And I knew i wanted to write something kind of slow paced, something a little sad and angsty, but would show KakaSaku slowly but surely falling in love.

Idk if you’ve noticed but a lot of my fics, the pairings don’t change each other dramatically. They accept each other as they are and then they grow with together. Like that acceptance is something i just love writing, its so subtle, it isn’t something you declare. Its simply “I am going to love you. I am going to love you despite your flaws and faults. I am going to love you unconditionally because I know you, I understand you, and there is nothing you could do to drive me away.” 

The fic kind of wrote itself after that first scene. I kept going back to the rain, go being ghosts, and resurrection, and the small epiphanies one gets. I wanted to focus on each character’s growth with each other. They didn’t find light in life because of each other, but with each other. And i think that’s my favorite thing about that fic. 

I wanted something raw and real and just something beautiful. I’m actually really proud of it tbh. Would i go back and rewrite/edit it? Oh of course! I’d do that with every single one of my fics, but i’m not gonna cause i think its in its rawest form right now. :))))

ANYWAY humanities yaku is stupid hot i think your characterization of him in that post (if any passersby are reading this go go go read) is spot on so he’s probably into philosophy...... but he’s also a big traveller in the future i think so i wouldn’t be surprised if he was more interested in world history. he’s really fun to debate with because he’s not a dick and doesn’t resort to cheap tactics (like shouting over you) but is also very stubborn so it’s like a very long intense conversation about only one topic. he seems like he’s bad at writing essays though like he can be very eloquent face to face and then struggles to write at an elevated level (or at least doesn’t find it easy). he’s pretty easygoing most of the year but come finals he’s got a rigorous study schedule going and probably sets up a lot of study groups bc teaching helps him to memorize stuff and get intimate with the material and he’s regularly on the more competent side of students as well as a natural leader

BTW, one thing I immediately realised I should have added to my original post, looking at your tags: just wanted to say that this is officially an AU where having a soulmate relationship does not automatically preclude dating, loving, found-familying, even marrying someone else! Though of course, the characters within the universe hold a wide range of beliefs about whether or not this is a good idea or something that can end well - but in principle, you can totally have flings, one night stands, short term affairs, or indeed long stable relationships of many kinds, with people who are Not Your Soulmate.

Like, some people are naturally polyamorous and make it work just fine. Someone who wants or is socially obliged to have biological children for bloodline reasons - preserving a kekkei genkai, protecting clan succession, stuff like that - will often marry someone who can help with that if their soulmate physically can't, or they just don't have that kind of soulmate dynamic. (This is relatively common in powerful clans, of course.) People who have lost their soulmates often get into survivor-relationships with one another, as they can understand the depth of each other's grief and be gentle with it. Sibling soulmates may both get married and end up sharing a four-person household and helping raise each other's kids. Etc.

Honestly I deliberately wanted to avoid the "only your Destined Mate can make you happy in any way at all ever" trap in this setting and pay some respect to chosen relationships too. I do love the soulmate trope but I feel it's made more interesting, not less, if you add it on top of the rich range of dynamics people can already have, rather than sweeping all that aside and saying This One Thing replaces everything…

OMG sorry @ladytyburn XDDD but okay, thank you so much for asking about my AU! <3 I decided to make this a separate post rather than drop lore in your notes because apparently I had a lot to say once I got started?

(Soulmark AU infodump below the cut!)

Okay, so, Soulmark AU starts from the basic premise that for chakra users specifically (and only chakra users), fate matches you with a soulmate. Every shinobi, samurai, etc is either born with a soulmark or expects to develop one as they grow up, depending on whether they or their soulmate happen to be born first. The mark consists of one or more black kanji, like a tattoo, on the inside of the wrist of the dominant hand; the specific kanji you have will relate to some fundamental quality or trait of your soulmate, but their symbolism is often super cryptic and obscure until you actually meet the other person and go "oh, I get it!"

Speaking of which, when you meet each other, you'll know, and the thing you're meant to do at that point is to grip each other's forearms so your wrist marks touch. On doing this, you will both experience a neurochemical response that biologically calibrates you to your soulmate and dumps a ton of bonding hormones and so on into your bloodstream. Newly bonded soulmates will, if left to their own devices, collapse into a heap of fluff for several days and then emerge shiny-eyed and ready to take on the world together. Culturally, soulmates are recognised as Very Meaningful and bonds are generally respected, but there can definitely be cases where an awkward or inappropriate bond causes drama, outrage, or political disasters (which is where the fun starts, of course).

Random facts of possible interest:

Soulmate bonds often develop into sexual connections just because of the sheer biochemical intensity involved, but it's completely possible to be celibate or platonic soulmates (because of the whole "fated compatible match" thing, if one partner isn't interested in sex for some reason, the other generally won't be either.) Sometimes siblings can even be soulmates, which due to them being raised together tends to naturally create a very different dynamic to the one you get between soulmates who meet as adults. As a rule, the younger you are when you meet your soulmate, the more smoothly the bonding process will go (especially if you haven't gone through puberty yet) and the less emotional upheaval will accompany it.

Soulmarks are connected to some unique anatomical features: there's a small gland in the wrist directly under the mark, which secretes bonding hormones, plus a few other associated glands and things and the bit of the brain that controls them. This means that while soulmate bonds are both spiritual and physical, it's possible to destroy the physical side of a bond by surgically removing someone's mark and glands. This is severely culturally frowned upon, but is practised by some black-ops type organisations, including Root. If it's done before you meet your soulmate you will never be able to bond with them normally in this lifetime even if you still recognise each other, making this genuinely one of the worst things you can possibly do to someone. Losing your mark to accident or injury will, of course, also impact your ability to bond with your soulmate...

The soulmark appears on the dominant hand, so in order for the matching wrist grip thing to work, it is Just How Things Are that your soulmate will always have the same dominant hand as you. This has the side effect that if you're naturally true fifty-fifty ambidextrous, you may have two soulmates, which is very rare but not unheard of. Some people in that situation just get another ambidextrous person as their soulmate though.

If your soulmate dies, your soulmark will fade to a dull red. If you were already bonded to them you will suffer extreme grief and physical withdrawal symptoms; these are survivable, but not everyone chooses to live on without their soulmate. If you hadn't met them yet you will experience only an echo of the physical loss, but intense grief is nonetheless a normal and accepted reaction.

It's pretty universally believed that soulmates are a For All Time thing, so following a soulmate bereavement, finding each other again in your next lives is commonly hoped for and expected. However, sometimes, a red soulmark may return to black, meaning your soulmate has either been reincarnated early, or physically returned from death in some fashion. This is mostly just a popular romantic fiction trope, but does sometimes happen in real life too, especially if you lost your soulmate very young (or live an unusually long life).

As for what all this has to do with Naruto and Gaara, to come back to the original point; I don't want to spoiler too much because they're meant to be the next chapter in my ficlet collection, but yes, they are soulmates, mostly because I love how loyal they are to each other in canon and how much they understand each other in ways nobody else does or really even can.

Random fact: Gaara's forehead kanji is actually a copy of his soulmark in this AU! He and Naruto meet at the start of the Chūnin Exams as per canon but things go, uh, very differently, which is obviously going to have a knock-on effect across the plot of the series in general though I haven't worked all that out yet. Because they're both jinchūriki, their bond is going to get complicated for sure (please picture Gaara and Naruto hugging each other ferociously while Shukaku and Kurama glare at each other and facepaw in the bijū-dimension) but I fully intend for them to get a lifelong happy ending, and your comic just made me think of how they'd be with each other in that AU so I tagged it for personal inspiration. How long have you been a fan of Inazuma Eleven?

For almost a year I believe? I got into it in January and or at the end end of December. It's sorta iffy.

Okay so. I was in art class, and I was watching Yokai Watch stuff on YouTube because that was my shit earlier in the year, but while scrolling through the suggested videos I saw that they were doing a stream and clicked it. And it just so happens that it was the third Outer Code I believe? Could have been the second maybe maybe??? Well, it was the one with Eisei. And I thought it was really pretty, so I looked up Inazuma Eleven and recalled that my friend and I always wanted to see a soccer anime! So after that I began to watch the episodes and that puts me here today uwu

i know i havent been online in a long time, but i do know and remember that a few of my friends have birthdays this month (two of them this week) so i asked to come online just to make this post, because i love them all so so much that i couldnt just let it pass (who would i be if i did, right)

so thewantonsong that tumblr wont let me tag but her name is torrie and she is such a beautiful and amazing person. so full of love and sweetness, i havent told her but i have a nickname for her: sugar plum fairy. because of all of this genuine love and sweetness she has stored inside of her. i love her, and i admire her. i love talking to her and i honestly wish operation Get ely to Oklahoma was a real thing but man would i love to hug her and be friends and hang out together all of the time. its like teres this light that shines from inside of her just reaches anyone and everyone. gosh. i am honestly so blessed to know her, she has been such a big thing this year. her friendship has been one of my favorite things this year. i pray the best for her, i pray that she continues to grow, that her light continues to grow and flow because we, and most definitely i, need a more light like torries light. light that honestly is God given. i love you torrie and i hope you know this. i know im a few days late aaaa but i do love you and i havent stop thinking about talking to you and making this post ever since last week.

THE NEXT is the one and only, the one whos birthday was yesterday and i was freaking out because i wanted to ask to use the laptop to say happy birthday but i got nervous and ended up not asking aaaaa. but im here now aaayyyeee. anyways. hemkinator.
