I want your top ten most interesting facts about earthquakes (According to you) and your top three favorite earthquakes in history (based not on loss of human life of course, but the types of damage caused, or geological processes involved in the origination of the quakes, or the scientific advances that occurred as a result or something.)
Oh my god I think I love you
Top 10 Most Interesting Facts (according to me):
1. Subduction Zones are literally the worst faults to live next to. They're the kind of faults that one tectonic plate slides UNDER another one, and they are what cause the earthquake/tsunami's from Indonesia and Japan
2. The Cascadia subduction zone is located in the Pacific Northwest (Canada, Washington, Oregon, and parts of Northern California) and every major earthquake that has happened on the San Andreas fault (with the exception of the 1906 earthquake) has been triggered by an earthquake on the Cascadia fault
3. Most of the deaths from the 1989 San Francisco earthquake were from the collapse of the Cypress structure (it was a double decker highway that literally pancaked on top of itself). Since the earthquake happened at 5:04PM on a weekday, had the Bay Area World Series (between the Oakland A's and the San Francisco Giants) not been happening a lot more people would have died in both the Cypress structure collapse AND the Bay Bridge collapse (on which only one person died).
4. In the 1960's a group of scientists came together and said that within 10 years they would be able to figure out how to predict earthquakes. By 1990 they eventually conceded that either it was extremely difficult or impossible to actually predict earthquakes.
5. In spite of this, Japan thinks it has a pretty decent way of figuring out how to predict earthquakes within 30 minutes of them happening. However, it's not guaranteed and in the event of a false alarm would cause the country so much money that, currently, it's not worth it.
6. Most earthquakes happen in a region called the Ring of Fire (named because of how many volcanoes exist on the plate lines) however earthquakes can happen pretty much anywhere because the tectonic plates are CONSTANTLY moving.
7. Literally thousands of earthquakes happen every year. It's just that either they are too small for us to feel OR they are the equivalent of a large truck driving by our house so we don't notice.
8. This isn't a "scientific fact" so much as something from my personal experience: There's no way to determine an earthquake, but a few seconds before a decently sized one hits you can tell because there's a kind of roaring noise. I think it sounds kind of like a roller coaster.
9. The San Andreas fault has splintered into many different faults in the Bay Area and Southern California. However itself is a splinter from the Cascadia Subduction Zone.
10. Though it currently seems there is no way to predict earthquakes, scientists are looking into several "coincidences" that tend to happen the same time as earthquakes. None of them happen 100% of the time but they have happened enough times that they're being looked into (like those "earthquake lights" you may have heard about")
Top Three Favorite Earthquakes:
1. I'll put both the 1906 and 1989 earthquakes up here for obvious reasons (though the 1989 earthquake has the added bonus of being exactly 2 months before I was born)
2. 365 Crete Earthquake (for being the earliest recorded Megathrust earthquake which are my favorite types even though I would never ever EVER want to be in one)
3. 1700 earthquake on the Cascadia subduction zone (the last Megathrust earthquake on that particular Subduction Zone)

brokenchameleoncircuit replied to your post: Wait, what is Badwolf!Nine?
I never even considered this character and now you have me extremely intrigued.
It's actually Nelly's fault, I think.
but I know, right? I wanna know what he did. Or what he considered doing.

Haha, sure, we've done so before. Though, I should warn you we currently have emperor steve* in power.
*emperor steve is not a complimentary nick name. He is a power hungry ass hat who wants to remake Canada in his own image, and he's well on his way.

I think you're a Doe (a deer, a female deer, re, A DROP OF GOLDEN SUUUNN) and here's why now that I've done my musical outburst. I think you're pretty like a doe though I've never seen a picture of you. Your personality is beautiful so that means you are, because people with a beautiful personality can never be anything else. You seem smart to me, and also shy at first, but trusting enough when you get come comfortable. You also seem strong (as in willed) like the graceful strength of a doe. :D
Oh thank you so much, m'dear. I love deer. =]
