Reid’s breath caught in his throat. Jackson was always breathtaking to him if he gave himself enough time to consider it (which he almost always resolutely didn’t) but catching a glimpse of him now stopped his breath, felt like it stopped his heart entirely.

It was only a moment, such a brief moment, but he was sure it was Jackson’s face he saw looking right at him from the opposite side of the theatre hall. Jackson, who’d been dead just over a month now. Jackson, who took a piece of Reid’s heart with him when he left for America and an even bigger piece when he died so suddenly, so unfairly, six months later.

It was only a moment, and then it was gone, all the sounds and smells around him surging back into sharp clarity as somebody broke his line of sight and his vision of Jackson disappeared entirely.

It didn’t matter that he knew he was to expect a hyper-awareness of the other person, always on his mind. He was holding onto the hope that if he tried hard enough he could ignore it. He knew there had been cases of soulmates not connecting, of their timers just running out and them never having felt anything, not knowing who their soulmate was supposed to have been.

Comments: An absolutely thrilling fic, an emotional rollercoaster! So much delicious angst balanced with super cute moments. An intriguing angle on the well-loved soulmate trope.

Barba’s gaze softened for a second, and Sonny felt transfixed. He was hyper aware of his own heartbeat. He felt so close to giving in to what he wanted, and for the first time, he thought maybe Barba wanted that too. The moment between them shattered at the sound of a knock at the door, and both of them sprang apart in an instant.

A sweet, unconventional take on the “bed sharing” trope. Carisi’s quick detour off the highway to avoid traffic winds up with our favorite duo broken down on the side of an unfamiliar road with dying phones (and Apple watches) and no cell service. And there was only one...set of car seats! 

Barba Family

[G] An Ever-Fixed Mark by Phillystrega

Phillystrega writes some of my favorite dialogue and family dynamics, and this 5+1 fic about wardrobe sharing is no exception. Though only one of the fic’s five scenarios deals with Barba’s mother, she’s an absolute treat, and delivers one of my favorite lines:

“So,” his mother says. “Does that boy live with you or just leave his laundry at your apartment?”

Soulmates

[T] Every Time We Touch by OblivionCastro

A unique take on the soulmates trope, told in 5+1 format, wherein a touch from your soulmate leaves you in pain. This concept in and of itself is a double-edged sword, and though the story is brief, the ending packs a punch. 

Pining

[NR] Pass Here and Go On by abogadobarba

A dreamy season-21 fic that takes you on a brief leg of Rafael Barba's cross-country train ride with his mother. It’s filled with literary tie-ins, lush language, introspective pining, and capped off with a bittersweet reunion with Sonny Carisi who just so happens to be on the same train. Extra points for rendering my absolute favorite version of Lucia Barba, whose asides are total perfection.

Summary: “‘M not even sick,” Connor mutters thickly, but hangs his head over the toilet anyway as a hiccup rolls through his body.

He heaves painfully this time, throat aching, tears forming in his eyes, back arching into Will’s hand with the effort, and a voice in the back of his head tells him that maybe he is sick after all, even though it came out of nowhere, because in all his life, this has never happened. He’s had the odd reflux attack, but never like this, never a swirling nausea that leaves him gagging emptily over a public toilet, sweat coating his forehead.
