⚖️#ArtIsAWeapon "Artists have the ability to depict the humanity and the dignity of people, even in the midst of something brutal and violent ... It's a tough subject. It's a challenging subject. And we wanted to use art to help people manage the weight of this history and engage in a more complete way with the lives of enslaved people." - Lawyer, Social Justice Activist, Founder of Equal Justice Initiative @eji_org Bryan Stevenson @bryanstevenson1959 .
🎥 reposted from @cbssundaymorning
"An Alabama sculpture park evokes the painful history of slavery" by Mark Witaker March 17, 2024
"In Montgomery, Alabama, wedged between a maze of train tracks and the river, a long-neglected plot of land has been transformed. It's now home to the #FreedomMonumentSculpturePark, the vision of lawyer and social activist #BryanStevenson.
The 17-acre park, set to open this month, is filled with nearly 50 sculptures by world-famous artists like Kehinde Wiley, Simone Leigh. and Kwame Akoto-Bamfo, collectively evoking the history of slavery in America...
It's the latest project for Stevenson, founder and director of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), also based in Montgomery. For more than 30 years, Stevenson and his team have provided legal services to people on death row, to date helping overturn more than 140 convictions and sentences. He said understanding the racial injustices of the present begins by reckoning with the tortured legacy of the past."

Always Black, forever proud. #blackatapple — Today I joined US Black Apple employees in our first #blackout day in observance of Dr. #MartinLutherKingJr’s birthday. Tonight we’re taking over a theater in #SiliconValley for a private screening of #JustMercy. Two full circle moments. 1. When I was younger, people tried to diminish my passion for Black people by trying to label it as militancy. Today I help lead a Black community in one of the largest companies in the world, in one of the least diverse industries in the world. 2. Last year I had the HONOR of meeting #BryanStevenson and had the opportunity to tell him how much he inspired me and moved me after hearing him speak for the first time. Now I get to take my peeps to watch a movie about him. Life is crazy man. Thank You God for my fantabulous, weird and windy path. —— #blackgirlmagic #womenofcolor #style #fashion #hair #naturalhair #fro #ootd #writer #houston #htown #texas #cali #california #bayarea #sanjose #tech #technology #womenintech #womenintechnology #blackintech #black #community #justmercy (at San Jose, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7cQDS7gVR3/?igshid=1osa88n8n31c2

Our Black History Book of the Day is none other than 'Gordon Parks: The Atmosphere of Crime, 1957' published by @steidlverlag & @gordonparksfoundation When @life magazine asked Gordon Parks to illustrate a recurring series of articles on crime in the US in 1957, he had already been a staff photographer for nearly a decade, the first African American to hold this position. Parks embarked on a six-week journey that took him and a reporter to the streets of New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Unlike much of his prior work, the images made were in color. The resulting eight-page photo-essay 'The Atmosphere of Crime' was noteworthy not only for its bold aesthetic sophistication, but also for how it challenged stereotypes about criminality then pervasive in the mainstream media. They provided a richly hued, cinematic portrayal of a largely hidden world: that of violence, police work and incarceration, seen with empathy and candor. Parks rejected clichés of delinquency, drug use and corruption, opting for a more nuanced view that reflected the social and economic factors tied to criminal behavior and afforded a rare window into the working lives of those charged with preventing and prosecuting it. Transcending the romanticism of the gangster film, the suspense of the crime caper and the racially biased depictions of criminality then prevalent in American popular culture, Parks coaxed his camera to record reality so vividly and compellingly that it would allow Life’s readers to see the complexity of these chronically oversimplified situations. 'The Atmosphere of Crime, 1957' includes an expansive selection of never-before-published photographs from Parks’ original reportage. Read more via linkinbio. Edited with text by @thesarahmeister Foreword by @peterkunhardt & @glenndlowry Text by @nifleetwood @iambryanstevenson #gordonparks #gordonparksatmosphereofcrime #atmosphereofcrime #50sscrimephotography #crimephotography #sarahhermansonmeister #sarahmeister #PeterkKunhardt #GlenndLowry #NicoleFleetwood #BryanStevenson #blackhistorymonth #blackhistoryreading #blackhistory https://www.instagram.com/p/CZ67_hilETV/?utm_medium=tumblr

This book has been on my TBR for a while but I've been delaying cause I knew it would be upsetting. This book is so so soooo important. Stevenson tackles the heartbreaking reality of the American justice system and how it disproportionately effects poor Black & Brown people. Honestly I you don't read this and feel a little bit enraged and motivated to help change the system I don't know what to tell you. Also the meme is 💯 🎯 #JustMercy #restorativejustice #meme #BryanStevenson #antiracist #BookRiotReadHarderChallenge2021 #nonfiction #decemberreads #Nerdymama #nerdybooks #BlackGirlsReadBooksToo #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CXEPaBpLBRC/?utm_medium=tumblr

I'm currently reading "The Sun Does Shine", the memoir of Anthony Ray Hinton, a man who spent 30 years on death row for a crime he didn't commit. It is because of stories like these why the Equal Justice Intiative (@eji_org) exists. The story of Mr. Hinton is so close to home---actually right here in my hometown in Jefferson County, Alabama. If you don't read anything else this summer, add this book to your reading list. A powerful story of hope, love, justice, forgiveness, and freedom. This book is also part @Oprah's 2018 Book Club. I'm grateful that Mr. Hinton is able to share his story with the world. I pray that this will be part of a movement for change when it comes to injustice.

I can’t wait to visit this museum/monument! Great work #BryanStevenson and @eji_org! This @60minutes video with @oprah was exactly the perfect precursor. The idea behind the pillars is heartbreaking to view and I’m sure it’s just as sad in person. Great job to the whole team. This portrait comes from my illustration series titled "Visual Activism." It was inspired by Just Mercy - a deeply moving film based on the life work and memoir of civil rights attorney @bryanstevensonoffical · The film shines a light on the deep-seated injustice and inner workings of the prison industrial complex that continue to plague Black men in particular to this very day. His "hopelessness is the enemy of justice" quote is both timely and true. · 10% of the proceeds from the sale of the original illustration, as well as Prince, go directly to support Brian's nonprofit organization, the @eji_org. · Thank you to my dear friend @tiffanydavy for the recommendation. ✊💕 · Just Mercy book is out now. Watch @justmercyfilm by going to justmercyfilm.com for streaming info. · · · #JustMercyMovie #JustMercy #BryanStevenson #JamieFoxx #BrieLarson #MichaelBJordan #NoJusticeNoPeace #AmplifyMelantedVoices #BLM #ART #BlackLivesMatter #EndSystemicRacism #PrisonIndustrialComplex #Artivist #EndRacismNow #JusticeMatters #DismantleWhiteSupremacy #VOTE #DismantleThePrisonIndustrialComplex #VisualActivism #RickFraustoFineArt #ArtForSocialJustice #UntilFreedom #FlipTheSenate #EnoughIsEnough #DefundHate #DefundThePolice #PowerToThePeople #DemilitarizeThePolice #InvestInBlackCommunities (at United States) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCtsIOVpBd7/?igshid=jn09v9czk7pp

I listened to this book and watched the movie recently and I have to say it wasn’t easy. I grew up saying that line in the pledge of allegiance “...liberty and justice for all” and wanting to believe that everyone who lived here felt the same way, but as we we’ve increasingly seen, that just isn’t so. This book really shows how unjust our justice system is especially when it comes to BIPOC. It also really made think hard on my stance on the death penalty, understand better mass incarceration and prisons as a business. It also kinda made me wish I was a lawyer so I could help. We need more people like Bryan Stevenson and his team. This is a must read. The movie is good, but it only shares a small part of what is contained in the book. #readit #justmercy #bryanstevenson #bookstagram #booktomovie #bookgeek #bookworm #booknerd #bookish #bibliophile #nonfiction #bookaddict #bookaholic #bookaholicsanonymous #bibliotherapy #readersofinstagram #audiobooks #audiobookstagram #readmorebooks #read #reading https://www.instagram.com/p/CCJaLWZgEjM/?igshid=11e6flz1e67f0
