love the library. there's no risk. you can take out a book and go "wow this sucks" and just give it back. and when you do that you're still making the library's Number Go Up so you'll be able to roll the dice on even more books. all for the low low price of free/you already paid for it with your tax money so you might as well use it
#i've read or at least started four library books recently#one was good#one was useful for a minute but i only took it out *because* it was a low-risk low-reward situation#other two weren't for me#and that's fine!#it's not like i wasted money on them!

TIL the reason you don’t find much Lyme’s Disease in California is not because we don’t have Ticks, or Lyme Disease Vectors; but rather: because the Western Fence Lizard (if you live anywhere in California this is your regular Garden Variety Lizard) has adapted a passive immune response that makes their blood lethal to Lyme Disease Bacteria. Any Tick that feeds on one gets its gut cleansed of Lyme Disease as a side effect.
Fucking neat.

also I got a tattoo partially re-coloured today and they bandaged me in veterinary wrap like I'm a sick horse
#the original tattoo was coloured just fine!#the only problem was that one of the colours was clashing with the tattoo just above it#the neon pink fish belly didn't match well with the earthy palette of my medieval lady#so I had a guy go over it and make the fish belly bright red#(which IS a colour you see in illuminated manuscripts!)#and now I'm very happy with everything

I was rambling on the issue of museums and human remains and how certain populations are more likely to have their bodies put on display to be gawked at and then went "well I guess the Pompeii casts were of Europeans. there are bones in there right?" and Googled it to make sure, at which point I confirmed that yes there are bones in there, but more interestingly DNA testing revealed that a cast of an adult holding a child everyone assumed was a mother and child were, in fact, a man and a kid entirely unrelated to him. Honestly that's more moving to me. Maybe they were connected in a way other than blood, but maybe a stranger saw a child when the world was ending and thought the one thing he could do was hold them.
#or maybe he was the babysitter. idk#crack open a pompeii cast like a kinder egg and there's teeth in there#now personally if people wanted to put my bones on display I'd be cool with it#maybe I'll decide to donate myself to science idk. I don't want to be used to practice face lifts though...#writing in my will 'if someone wants to have my skull on their bookshelf that's fine. put a candle inside it'#why this

slightly furious reminder that fish do in fact feel pain and do in fact experience fear and distress when in pain since people seem to love spreading the myth that fish don't feel pain. what is it with people assuming a creature is incapable of feeling pain or emotion just because it doesn't have complex facial muscles. come on gang
#animal cruelty#<- for filtering#IT PISSES ME OFF#'oh it's fine to kill eels very slowly for extra flavour. they don't feel pain so it's not cruel at all' did you do. any fucking research#if you REALLY need sources for the idea that non-mammals can feel pain and fear (you know. two things extremely vital for survival?)#then I can send some links in the comments. but fucking christ we shouldn't need an article to tell us this shit#fish have pain receptors fish respond negatively to pain. they'll hide or struggle. fish who escaped being hooked show trauma-like response#including shallow breathing. isolation. and decreased appetite. fish are so fucking complex but people see them gasping#with their gaping mouths and rolling eyes and think ah. the lived experience of this creature is equivalent to that of an earthworm

As gen-AI becomes more normalized (Chappell Roan encouraging it, grifters on the rise, young artists using it), I wanna express how I will never turn to it because it fundamentally bores me to my core. There is no reason for me to want to use gen-AI because I will never want to give up my autonomy in creating art. I never want to become reliant on an inhuman object for expression, least of all if that object is created and controlled by tech companies. I draw not because I want a drawing but because I love the process of drawing. So even in a future where everyone’s accepted it, I’m never gonna sway on this.
#personal#im still fighting it but im also a realist so I’ve accepted that this will be our future#rant#gen ai is fucking boring#I hope this doesn’t make me sound like a ‘going against the crowd. not like the rest of society’ type (it would be depressing if it did)#but yeah even in a world where it’s considered totally fine to use ai to make art I’ll still be using my bare hands#because I like it and nobody can take that from me#if you’re a young artist interested in or already using ai. just know that the thing you rely on to make art can be taken away at any point#all of it. and there’s nothing you can do about it if they decide to. it doesn’t belong to you

People will claim to be a fan of some thing and then hate all of the themes and motifs and story lines and plot lines and protagonists and antagonists like man I don’t think that you actually like it here
#this is about a lot of IWTV show fans but it applies to most fandoms actually#hating is one thing. hating is fine. good even. sometimes. but yall just seem Miserable.
