assistant manager, sleeps in the back room half the time, only ever gets called out for it by chan. somehow a master at handling orders during rush hour, though? gets through coffees in a flash, taking orders and yelling at minghao to get on with it and also packaging pastries and working the cashier and still smiling and greeting people nicely. but don't call for his help until it's rush hour again okay he needs another nap now

doesn't actually do, like . anything. he's out there on the floor chatting to people and (sometimes) taking orders and (not really) clearing the tables and smiling and doing nothing whatsoever. gets away with it bc he's pretty and good at talking to people so it gains them more customers anyway. works in a cafe, but doesn't like coffee. asks people if they want a cake instead when they ask what coffee he recommends

bright and sweet and has the weirdest recommendations when customers ask him how he normally takes his coffee. either looks like he's buzzed up on way too much caffeine or looking like he's about to doze off any second. has probably slept during a lull in his shift before. whizzes around the shop with his broom going "wheee!!" while he's cleaning up when they're closing up the coffee shop for the day

hoshi

bids all the customers goodbye with a wave and his signature move (his horanghae hands), gets slapped on the head with a tea towel by woozi every time he catches him. is always stealing the pastries from inside the display during the lazy times of the day, swears he's innocent and pins the blame on poor seungkwan who was on the other side of the cafe at that time

wonwoo

has literally every customer in their early 20s giving him their phone numbers/ asking him if he wants to go grab something to eat with them. typically hides behind the coffee machines and doing the barista work bc ngl he's kinda terrified because one time this lady just Kept Coming Back to talk to him and his social battery was just not up for dealing with her level of bright chatter. 

woozi

he gives me manager vibes. he's the one who scolds mingyu whenever he gets within a three foot radius of the coffee machines, who hits hoshi over the head for his excessive tiger agenda, who lets jeonghan sleep in the back room but denies that it's because he's lowkey scared of him. very very good at manager-ing and can also barista when it gets too busy. the cafe would fall to pieces without him tbh. 

minghao

one of the best baristas ever. memorises complicated orders in the blink of an eye. rattles off the order back to the customer when they claim that he made their drink wrong and then raises an eyebrow and goes "isn't that what you wanted, sir?". grins almost sadistically whenever someone orders an insanely caffeine-loaded drink. is in horror at junhui's coffee preferences. 

mingyu

isn't allowed near the coffee machines after that one time he almost broke one of them while pulling the lever too hard. is great at doing cashier work because he's such eye candy, pulls in the greatest amount of tips because of it. sometimes works the floor, but that's also risky bc there have been times where he's gotten in the way of his colleagues as they hand out coffee and spilt it all down his uniform

brighest sunshine smile ever. asked to work mainly morning shifts, and woozi agreed because putting seokmin and his sunshine brightness in an evening shift would probably make their tired customers feel even more exhausted while talking to his unending brightness. has gotten the second most amount of numbers given to him after wonwoo, but the clueless boy doesn't even understand why

seungkwan

that one chatty barista who talks about anything and everything to anyone who looks at him too long while he's working. hates the opening shift. always complains long and loud at how sloppily the shop was cleaned up by the people on the closing shift of the day before. scolds hoshi when he snatches a cake pop when he thinks no one is looking.

Good And Honest Worker™. nothing to say tbh, he's just actually genuinely good at the job. everyone wants to be put on the same shift as him. gives customers song recommendations too whenever they ask him what drink he recommends they have. once tried to write the prop-up sign for the cafe, was laughed at by woozi bc it looked like it was written by a child

newbie. doesn't know how to work the coffee machines, isn't allowed to figure them out in case he becomes the next mingyu and destroys the machine that was almost killed by the guy's hands. is in charge of drawing smiley faces on the coffee cups. writes everyone's name wrongly on the cup, and yet calls it out flawlessly every time as he hands them their coffee with a beam and a chipper "have a nice day!"

okay so first of all, i wrote this in the two weeks between lab rats and the final alarm; pretty sure i got it out just under the wire? (i just went to go check and the air date for final alarm was may 2nd, and i published this on may 1st! wheee!) which means that i wrote it fast. (and angry. and then i felt a little bad about being mad about it after the last alarm and then!! sadly vindicated at being angry by the last two of the season.)

so you asked about the worldbuilding and the thing is. i find my best worldbuilding is done when i approach it is a conversation — but not just a conversation, a conversation that we're in the middle of. (i don't know if this works for everyone, but it's something you could try out if you wanted, i guess)

case in point: ghost!bobby pops up next to tommy and tommy just starts talking to him. no freak out, no "ghosts don't exist", just "god, this really sucks, bobby". later, at the hospital, tommy talks about him wasting his haunting on tommy (the takeaway here was meant to be 'instead of athena' — aka his family — and i hope it came through).

there's a snippet here which didn't fit with the vibe of the story where bobby is trying to figure out if he's tommy's first ghost and tommy doesn't really give him an answer. spoiler: tommy has seen ghosts before. it's something that he keeps to himself and doesn't talk about because good god man, he's been in the army and knows what would happen if the government found out people could see fucking ghosts.

how many and who are things that i had to know for myself, but they take away from the actual story so i'm hesitant to share? but what i am comfortable sharing is that they don't normally stick around very long, and some ghosts can interact with the real world (bobby and his coffee), but they are ghosts and incorporeal and hauntings the way they're depicted in movies are basically garbage. tommy has never gotten beaten up by a ghost and he never will.

bobby as a ghost isn’t stuck with tommy, but since he is haunting him he does have to hang out pretty frequently. tommy’s kind of like his battery.

i said most ghosts don’t stick around; you can rightly assume this isn’t true for bobby. he’s got athena and buck to take care of and by golly! he’s gonna do it!!

we met rick (and colin, sort of), who’s one of tommy’s exes. i am both a (lazy) writer and fond of the characters i write, so they’ll both be referenced in other stories if and when the exes come up — rick was dating colin before, they broke up (law school is a bitch), he dated tommy, then they ended up getting back together (law school is a bitch) and tommy still hangs out with them in the way you hang out with casual exes.

hmm. hmm! is this it. have i covered all my world building things i wanted to touch on. maybe! there’s a lot tbh.

(deleted scene at the end: buck tries to be a gentleman and offer to sleep in the guest room and tommy tells him it’s haunted. the next morning he jokingly asks tommy if that was just a way to get him in bed and tommy is like “no, it’s haunted” and then buck is the one going “wait are you serious” and tommy just… “billy boils, evan”s him and doesn’t explain further.)

"-because you know those things can get just ridiculously complicated for no reason, but I've always considered it worth at least having a look at-" Timur sat right beside Felwinter on the sofa, partially lounged against the Exo, crowding his personal space and even bumping his arm from time to time as he talked with his hands.

Felwinter sighed and lowered the book he'd been desperately trying to read for the last twenty minutes.

"-Fallen engineering, if you can call it that, those filthy creatures, aside, the blasted things are actually pretty brilliant, and damn useful if you can get them re-wired without blowing them up. I've rigged a few to work like flying turrets you know. Can't quite get them to work independently for me like the Fallen do. Not without a few extra tricks, heh, but those shanks can lift quite a lot of weight for those clunky little bodies, and they're damn fun to stick a rocket launcher to the bottom of!"

Felwinter turned his head slightly, looking over at his partner with poorly suppressed exasperation. Timur had not only followed him back to the study uninvited, he'd been incessantly rambling the entire duration of his visit, an end to which Felwinter still had no means of predicting nor initiating.

It wasn't that he didn't like Timur. Far from it, in fact. The man was keen-eyed and clever, and an eager assistant on their excursions.

Hell, sometimes Felwinter could even admit he was fun. Delightful even.

Oh, who was he kidding. He was actually quite enamored with the man.

But at the moment he was considering strangling him just for a few precious moments of peace and quiet because Timur would not. stop. talking.

This was the price one paid for the pleasure of having Timur about, Felwinter lamented. Sometimes the Stormtrancer got himself worked up and excited about a topic and he just had to ramble until he worked it out of his system.

"They'd fire one shot and -Wheee! blow themselves in a full cartwheel before they're righted again!" Timur was still going, even if Felwinter had tuned him out briefly. "I'll show you sometime, Fel, they're the funniest thing. I think what I really want, though, is to get my hands on one of those big guys. You know the ones, right, Fel? I wonder if I can hack the brains of one of those. Permanently I mean. I could get one to turn and run off on it's flock I think, same as any other. They can't be too special. But just think of all that we could pack into one with a bigger chassis-"

Shanks. How could anyone go on this long about shanks?! Felwinter resisted the urge to groan.

"Timur?" He ground the name out, interrupting Timur.

"Yes, dearest?" Timur purred, teasing. Felwinter laid his book aside entirely and twisted where he sat to fist his hand into Timur's lapel. He hauled him in so close his faceplates were nearly touching Timur's nose.

"Shut the hell up," Felwinter huffed, tipping his head just so to press a searing kiss into Timur's mouth. Timur made a surprised noise, but then immediately pressed in, throwing his arms around Felwinter in a surprisingly tender embrace. He spoke only once more before pouring himself into the kiss. "Okay."

i'm confident making pretty much anything as long as i have a recipe, but i can make a lot of korean food from memory which is nice.

i would like to get better at making omelettes though. i never got the hang of flipping them 😅

2. okay so me and my best friend are both very intelligent people but when we're just hanging out together we're dumb and dumber, sharing a brain cell. our interactions mostly include gossip, ranting about obsessions, and cracking each other up. oh and me yelling at her for her HORRIBLE taste in men. i still love her sm 🥹

3. okay so for leather jackets i currently have one, and it is literally my pride and joy. i think i found it at a nordstroms sophomore year of high school and i have not parted with it since. it's thick enough to be warm, but it doesn't look bulky which i love

however i do have a minor obsession with jackets and hoodies, so i also have a cropped black jean jacket from forever 21 i got in high school (listen i haven't changed my wardrobe much in the last three or four years), a black cardigan which is the comfiest thing i own, a black and gold track jacket from simone biles's gold over america tour, and an oversized black hoodie.

basically if it's black and i can wear it over something else i love it

4. i wouldn't say i'm necessarily someone who has true collections, but i do have certain things i have saved and trinkets i love. actually that's a lie. i'm a book collector of sorts, in the sense that my favorite gift to receive and my favorite thing to buy is books. so i own more than 500 books. i love the way books feel, the way they smell, how crisp they are when they're new, and how soft and worn they get when they've been well loved and read again and again. in particular, i really love used books. especially ones that were obviously read again and again. i like that they have a story behind them, and the pages i'm reading were once read by someone who fell in love with the plot and characters again and again.

it gets marginally less fun when anakin approaches him and begs him to pretend to date him for the entirety of the mission they're about to go on because he needs to make this senator jealous, he's been in love with her since he was a kid, and this is his chance to be with her, but he needs her to not think of him as a little kid anymore.

and obviously being caught with obi-wan's tongue down his throat will bring about that realization.

how can obi-wan say no? it's going to be incredibly painful, of course, but he's been thinking about kissing anakin for years. how could he ever turn down the actual opportunity?

cue them doing the most convincing fake dating ever because they're just so comfortable with each other and obi-wan suggests practice kisses and anakin originally shies away from the idea. but then later, they do kiss and anakin just melts and becomes very addicted to kisses and eventually he confesses that he's never been kissed before, but he really likes it. it's just that he's been saving himself for the great love of his life.

(obi-wan of course pulls back to respect his boundaries, but anakin won't let him go far. "but, um, actually i've been thinking that---that i should know how to do this stuff so i'm good at it when, you know. i get together with her."

"with the senator," obi-wan clarifies.

"yeah of course," anakin responds already reaching up to connect their lips together again, and obi-wan knows this is hurting him, he knows a lightsaber to the brain would be kinder, but he can't stop himself from giving anakin whatever the other boy wants. even if it's not him.)

We all know the mercs are not neurotypical. This is fact.

But what are good sounds and bad sounds for them? Do the others know? Do they make sure to not make any of the Bad Sounds in case it gives someone sensory overload? Are there good textures and feelings to help with that?

oh i actually have misophonia so i'm somewhat qualified to answer this whee

just a warning, i'm gonna use this entire answer as an excuse for me to project heehoo

scout - i think sounds that he's generally fine with are anything having to do with voices or music, he's pretty loud himself as we know and probably likes to blast his music, so i would categorize those as Good Sounds for scout. on the other hand, i think his main Bad Sound is "shushing" sounds (which i used to struggle with a lot and they still bug me today so haha projection), not only because it bothers him as a sound but also because he's a bit sensitive about being told to be quiet. he probably struggled with this a lot in school because you know how teachers can be. i feel like the rest of the team would adjust to this by establishing alternative ways to get everyone to shut up and listen. maybe the "clap clap clapclapclap" thing, that was always an alternative that i appreciated. or maybe the jerma teacher noise because haha scout jerma

soldier - another guy that's pretty loud himself...this will probably turn into a theme knowing these characters, but i do have an idea for a merc or two that could plausibly have voice sensitivity i prommy! anyway, yeah, soldier strikes me as the type to be fine with and even enjoy loud voices, but another Good Sound i think he'd have would be. like. crushing sounds? like if you let him hold a paper for too long he will start crushing it because mm crumple crumple. also if he ever gets ahold of bread with a solid crust he totally does the thing from ratatouille where he listens to the crackling. right so onto Bad Sounds...i'm gonna project again and say that he really dislikes certain tongue clicking sounds, it's just a bad combo of wet and dry sound and is not fun for him. i remember during the "meet the heavy" sfm, heavy does that sort of sound before he says "i've yet to meet one who can outsmart bullet," so i think heavy especially would be mindful to not do that around soldier because he's a good guy.

pyro - oh hey look, someone that's actually pretty quiet! i'm gonna state the obvious and say that pyro really likes the sound of fire, with the soft roaring and the crackling and all that, it's some Good Sounds. they share the ratatouille tendencies with soldier in regards to bread. anon also mentioned Good Textures so i'm gonna say that pyro enjoys things that are smooth and/or rubbery, i mean look at their suit and also balloonicorn, it makes sense. also they like fluffy things because aww it's like animal friends! oh speaking of animals, they also really like the sound of dogs sniffing, i dunno how to explain this one it's just. yeah. anyway in terms of Bad Sounds, i think pyro has a certain degree of voice sensitivity, they're not necessarily overwhelmed by loud voices but if someone is yelling directly at them or just too close to them they get really really overwhelmed. therefore the rest of the team maintains a respectable distance when they run into a match and start doing their battle crys and such, and pyro does their little muffled yells along with them because they still find it fun to be included in The Noise

demo - he's fond of the sound of breaking glass. part of the reason why he brings a bottle as his melee is because haha funny breaking sound wheee. it's just a satisfying sound, i feel him on this one. it's also like a nice and predictable thing to do, you whack a glass thing against a hard surface, it breaks, it makes a breaking sound, hell yeah dude. autism hungry feed it broken glass. demo's got good taste in Good Sounds. also should go without saying but he knows how to be careful of glass shards, he knows what he's doing, which is why he's completely fine when he breaks his bottle in-game. he's so cool i wanna be like him when i grow up. ahem anyway, i think in terms of Bad Sounds, demo's really bothered by eating/chewing sounds, they're just icky to him. he keeps a reasonable distance from the others during meals, but oh you know he's back in it if it's just drinks, no problem with those at all

heavy - he's really comforted by the sound of laughter. he's been through some tough times, so whenever he hears laughing, he kind of loosens up because it's a sign that things are alright. also side tangent i don't think heavy understands the concept of an "evil laugh," he doesn't really get how something so mirthful could be "evil" in any way. so yeah all laughter is good laughter to heavy. Good Sounds indeed. although in terms of Bad Sounds, any kind of alarm sound will put him on edge. if he uses an alarm of any sort, he prefers ringing bell sounds, he's not fond of blaring alarms of any sort. i actually headcanon that the blu alarm bell system we see in "meet the spy" was installed by blu engie because the previous system was more like a fire alarm due to blu's decidedly more digital and modern base structure, and engie noticed after a few emergency situations that the blu heavy was getting pretty bad sensory overload from the alarms, so he got permission to replace them! i think red team's base(s) probably already had bell alarms to begin with because they have a more classic/rustic theme going on, so red heavy wouldn't have much of an issue there :)

engie - his Good Sounds are very music-centric. whenever he needs to calm down he goes about trying to find or produce a melody of some sort, whether it's by listening to music, playing his guitar or a harmonica, or just humming to himself. his mind gets very busy and hard to manage at times, so having a melody to follow makes it easier to sort out his thoughts. i also think he's perfectly capable of diminishing the whirring and beeping of his various machinery, but he purposefully has them rigged to play those sounds in a sort of familiar and melodic manner. i dunno, i just feel like he's the type to hear music in everything. moving on...i think his Bad Sounds are summarized by basically any sort of cacophony. he can handle loud sounds, but if it's a lot of loud sounds all at once, he struggles to process them all and it overloads his mind. therefore, i think the rest of the team generally carries themselves differently around engie, including on the battlefield; most of their canon interactions with engineers of the same team are basically just thanking him for building stuff or requesting that he build something, so i think it's not too farfetched to suggest that they're also less aggressive and less loud around engie. everyone respects him, as they should

medic - oh mein gott zhe neuros are so divergent here!--*cough* sorry don't know what came over me there. anyway i think medic is comforted by pretty much any animal sound, i mean he surrounds himself with birds and introduced mpreg into the tf2 universe just to Acquire Monkey, like. what more do you want me to say, the dude loves animals, he makes sure all of his spare animal organs were sourced humanely. also i noticed that shoebills were mentioned on the blog recently and i think he'd be fascinated by all the funky sounds shoebills make. oh mein gott zhat birdie sounds like a shootengunnen!--*ahem* pardon. something in my throat i guess. but yeah, basically animal sounds are Good Sounds for the medical lad. as for Bad Sounds...i feel like medic would be the type to be really distressed by the sound of crying/sobbing, he doesn't really know how to react to it and often the overload of confusion causes him to cry as well, which confuses him even more because he doesn't know how to deal with himself crying either so it's just a bad time. i like to imagine that someone especially good at keeping composed, like heavy or engie, would maybe help him out with learning how to calmly deal with situations like that. man i ended up projecting onto medic even more than i thought i would

sniper - okay first off...he strikes me as the type to really enjoy a good breezy sound, like rustling leaves or wind against a window. he's generally big on nature sounds i think, which leads into my next point which i now realize will probably be made into a piss joke: i think he's particular to the sound of rushing water, like you'd hear from rivers or waterfalls. now, my first Bad Sound assignment for sniper is hmm. zippers, i think. specifically the sound of pulling zippers quickly, he's not big on that buzzy, high-pitched sound. he tends to avoid zippers if he can but if he has to use them, he opens and closes them very gently to avoid hearing that sound. secondly, i haven't let myself have a repeat up until now so i'm cutting some slack for myself and saying that he shares the dislike of cacophony with engie. he prefers being as far away as possible from wherever the epicenter of noise is, which is lent well to by his position as, well, a sniper. he also has a similar sensitivity to pyro in that he dislikes loud voices, but for him it doesn't really matter if it's directed at him, he just dislikes them in general. the rest of the team tends to refrain from screaming and/or yelling in his vicinity, and he tends to have a bit of a mellowing effect on the people around him anyway, so it works out

spy - i think he'd have a fondness for low, rolling sounds, i suppose is the term? stuff like cats purring and distant thunder and rumbling air conditioners. his hearing is quite good, so he's developed an appreciation for more subtle sounds. they ground him to reality in a way when other louder sounds get to be overwhelming. speaking of overwhelming sounds, spy seems like the type to dislike scratchy sounds, and also scratchy textures but that's not what we're here for. i feel like he'd really hate those asmr videos where they scratch the mic, if that helps to picture what i mean. it brings to mind the idea of scratching something away to either destroy it or discover what it's hiding, and spy really doesn't vibe with that sort of thought. spy also doesn't voice his feelings especially clearly, since he keeps everything so private, so the other mercs that manage to catch on to spy's issue with scratchy stuff just tend to avoid making those sorts of sounds around him and kinda nudge anyone else who hasn't caught on yet
