sometimes people take attempts at historical nuance regarding terminology to mean "people didn't use these words to describe these identities and behaviours, but these identities and behaviours still existed, because they are fundamental truths of what it means to be human", rather than "we map our current conception of identities and behaviours with these words but they are not labels that can be straightforwardly applied to past experiences of the world because identities, behaviours, and conceptions of how those fit together are culturally and historically specific" and it. frustrates me
i don't think there is a concrete external reality of sexuality that we are merely creating labels to describe. i think the fundamental experience of sexuality is shaped by the labels and ideas available to us. people will always exist who don't conform to the norms of their time and will drive the development of new terms and new ideas but they do that within their own context not because of some like........ ontological pattern

I really don't like how people view Palamedes as a totally bad guy, while viewing Odysseus as maybe not completely but mostly good guy. Because, I think, the point is that they are very similar in their methods and that's what it is about.
I really like to think that Odysseus' hatred towards Palamedes was not motivated only by the fact that he put Telemachus in danger and forced Odysseus to leave his family. Don't get me wrong, it was motivated by this, but not only.
Odysseus hated Palamedes this much because Palamedes defeated him in his own field. He outwitted him, made him reveal his lies. And let's be honest, he did exactly the thing Odysseus would do if the positions were reversed.
That's also the reason why I prefer the version with Odysseus framing Palamedes for treason and not the version with drowning. Because framing Palamedes for treason was one of those Odysseus' grand plans, his big lie. He managed to trick all of the achaean camp, make them fall for his trickery, and in the end, Odysseus not only had Palamedes killed (in one of the most disgraceful, inglorious and painful ways possible) but also did it in a way of proving himself better at planning and scheming.
Odysseus did not simply kill Palamedes, but also did it in the way that is the straight-up revansh for their first meeting.

Here's a question for you: When and where do you think Norway was born/came to be? 🙏 Who were the first people (or nations) he interacted with? Something else you'd like to talk about regarding his earliest years?
Would love to see what baby Norway looked like. Or if it's more fitting; Norway reminiscing his youth? 😊
Thank you again for this amazing historical ask 🙏💖
As soon as we start talking about “birth” etc. in the nation!verse it suddenly becomes very lore heavy, so I’ll share my thoughts and ideas about this subject first ✨
For me, the nations are not human. They are human-like entities, but first and foremost they are countries/nations and do not have parents or biological relations in the same way humans do. Which is why it becomes important to know how nations irl are formed from a political and sociological point of view. Nations are can appear differently: a group of people with a common social and cultural identity; or as a state/formation of state that encompass a group of people under a common law. The actual birth of nations can be a complicated subject irl, but in the nation!verse it looks like the birth of nations are focused around when we start to see a common identity form – together with an organisation of a state. The status of the political organisation and how well the country operates likely contributes to the country’s growth physically.
With this definition of a nation in mind, we can take a look at historical sources and events to try to see the formation of the nation that is Norway. We know that Norway was formed as a nation in 871, under the king/chieftain Harald Hårfagre, but the Norwegian identity could’ve existed before this. Even though Norway was made up of several smaller “kingdoms” with their own identities, there was still something that separated them from the Danes and Swedes. This separation exists clearly in Snorre’s sagas from the 1200s, and we also see it with certainty as early as in Ottar’s stories from the 890s. Certain areas (like Trøndelag) likely had their own laws and way of govern from the migration or Merovingian period (4-600s) and still keeps their own smaller identity today – though still being primarily Norwegian of course.
I think Norway popped into existence around the 600s, but did not get the “status” of a fully formed nation until the early 800s, with certain periods of more growth parallel with the more extensive organisation of state during the 1000s especially. Norway hits another growth-spurt in the 1200s, before his stagnation in the late 1300s due to the effects of the Black Death.
The first other nations Norway probably interacted with would obviously be Denmark and Sweden – and Scotland and England, as Norway has always been oriented more towards the west and across the ocean.

Yk I’m usually pretty judgy about how child-parent characterisation is done, because so often will there be a “She was just like her father in every way” with like one trait from the other parent. Which can be written well I admit. It commonly is. But when I see cases like Adolin and Renarin I get really happy.
They’re both a mix of their parents, in layers. The moment you recognise the Evi in one of them you are also shown the Dalinar. An infinite blend of two people in two different ways, as well as everyone else around them and everything that they themselves are. It’s good characterisation I like it.

Small PSA, it is ham hock soup not ham hawk soup... Haymitch and the others are eating what is essentially a pig's ankle as it is an extremely cheap cut of meat used for it's flavor due to being so packed with collagen and connective tissues not a mix of ham and bird meat

I think from like a show making logic point of view it makes so much sense that the ghost in the hospital (that later turned out to be Maddie's dad) was gonna be important somehow.
He was the only ghost that said anything and he was even the one that said "Welcome to the waiting room. Have a seat". If he wasn't important I would think that the nurse ghost would have said that line. She even looked at Xavier for quite a bit and you'd assume somebody that died as a nurse would be the one introducing new ghosts to the afterlife. But she didn't say anything, no the one ghost that spoke to Xavier is the one that's most important. We were supposed to remember him!!
#anyways maybe that's obvious#but like#i just think that's really interesting and subtle#xavier only saw those ghosts for a minute maximum and then they were gone again#none of the ghosts had to say anything#like the point of 'holy shit xavier is dying right now' would be just as clear is no ghost had said anything#but maddie's dad did!!!#anyways#idk i'm rewatching and just noticed that he is the only one that said something to xavier#when i'd think usually the nurse would be the first to say something to him#also#slightly different topic#i wonder how the ghost 'community' in the hospital is compared to the school#because it's gotta be a lot more grownups than in the school#is it calmer there?#have they figured out more about the ghost world than janet and mr martin?#do old people that die there often immediately cross over because they have no unfinished business?#how many ghosts are in this hospital? like it's a place where people die a lot#but we didn't see That many ghosts#in which way do ghosts there loop?#do they also have a mr martin type figure that's 'in charge'?#do they have little ghost groups or communitys?#genuienly i wonder if it's calmer there because it's more grown ups or if it's even more drama than at the school because there's a lot#more ghosts all together in one place#did the patients that died in those hospital gowns change into other clothes after their deaths?#how often to they meet a new ghost only for that ghost to be revived and not being able to see the othet ghosts anymore?#lea's random thoughts#school spirits#school spirits spoilers#xavier baxter

Finished season 2…
#MAN…………….MAN.#Shima speaks#Squid Game#Squid Game season 2#You know what I’m sure the rebellion would have gone GREAT if In-ho. WASN’T THERE#(Also if Dae-ho didn’t freeze up 😭)#Homie got hit with the PTSD at the wrong time 😔#I keep telling myself that In-ho just doesn’t know what it’s like since he’s the Front Man but then I remember!#Shit wait he’s done this before!#I love how much In-ho and Gi-hun compliment each other. AND how they’re also complete opposites#They both won the Squid Game. Watched people die. And were too late to save the ones they loved#And yet!! And yet. There’s still such a huge difference between their character#Bc Gi-hun is STILL compassionate. Still has faith in people. Is still HUMAN#Meanwhile In-ho isn’t#Imagine what a turn of events this season would have been if Gi-hun’s compassion and humanity actually got through to In-ho…man…#In-ho changing bc of Gi-hun’s faith and care for people and deciding you know what yeah. Fuck it. Fuck THIS. I’m over it#And actually helps with the rebellion all the way to the end. Kills his subordinates bc he’s done with this shit#Anyway what a fucking ROLLERCOASTER holy shit.#HYUN-JU MY FUCKING QUEEN. SHE IS EVERYTHING. SLAY BITCH I LOVE YOU#I will be SO upset if she dies#Also slightly off topic from the ending but AGHHH when they were doing the 5 team race and everyone was cheering!!! It was so sweet 😭#They were all on each other’s side at least in that moment#Just seeing everyone yelling and hollering and cheering on all the teams I wanted to CRY#And then they all try to kill each other later on. Smh#Anyway can’t wait for season 3 to tear me asunder :))))

Piggybacking off this post I made last night, but I think two things can be true at once:
Being diagnosed or undiagnosed can both be disadvantages. Neither a state of diagnosis nor undiagnosis can be more "beneficial" because both can be harmful dependent on the situation. We need to be open to the possibility that a diagnosis can be helpful, harmful, a mix, or neither, and not having a diagnosis can also be helpful, harmful, a mix, or neither.
Basically, disability is complex. We live in an ableist world that simultaneously demands disabled people adhere to strict standards but also just not exist in the first place. It's hard enough to navigate diagnosis, and making it harder is only going to harm us, not abled people. They don't care about the intricacies of disability, more often than not.

well now i’m curious (assuming you’re talking about sho) what are your headcanons for his backstory?
(Maniacal laughter)
This bad boy can fit SO much trauma in him
Currently pretending I'm working on a whole fic about his backstory so technically this is all out of context spoilers but
An Incomplete Itinerary of Sho Minamimoto's Childhood (Bad)
Born with Sickle Cell Disease that almost killed him in his infancy. His near-death experience caused his soul to become entangled in the UG's frequency, meaning that for his whole life he could see the Reaper's Game while he was still alive (give it up for endless violence on an impressionable mind!!!)
Obviously, no one believes him when he starts talking about the streets being filled with wolves and bears and strange men-like creatures with wings. He doesn't understand what's happening to him and God knows no one understands him. He's alienated from virtually everyone at a very early age.
His mother is an older (late-forties) single custodian who struggles to balance childcare with work, often forced to leave Sho alone for long periods at a time, even as a young child. She loves him dearly, but with her own struggles with chronic fatigue there's very little left for him at the end of the day. It's hard enough just to keep him alive, let alone comforted about all the strange things he claims to see.
He has episodes of pain crisis (flare-ups caused by blocked blood flow) and spends long stints of time in the hospital or bed-bound at home. Eventually, taking time off of work to take care of her son leads to his mother losing her job.
They're homeless for a while (meaning that in Sho's eyes they're utterly exposed to and defenceless against the Noise he doesn't understand can't hurt him!! Yippie!!)
He is NOT finishing school like this. He flunks out in early high school (at this point he can't possibly give a shit about his education, he's learned the full extent of what the UG is and what being a Reaper can mean and he wants that, more than anything he craves the security of the power he's never had).
His few, lone friendships start to fall apart. Very very badly. There's a lot of grieving involved but if there's one thing I know about Sho Minamimoto is that he's great at crawling out of cycles. Yep.
He's also accused of murder at this point but don't worry about it. Don't even worry about it.
He's DEFINITELY not dying quietly. More than anything, that's been his worst fear. Blaze of fuckin glory baby!!! (he was only 18. barely more than a boy.)

find it interesting how when i was deep in kin stuff back in like, 2012-2014 nobody really gave a shit about any of this afaik. weird seeing it swing the other way and that there's like 'wrong' ways to kin now and ppl are getting more restrictive about it. no longer really participating in this/not keeping up with the community so all ive really got to say here is just like. huh. ok. kind of a nothing ask but whateva
- “i guess that's just my experience though. it couldve always been like this and i'd just been running in chill circles. hard to quantify”
Of course I can’t really speak for that era - I only really started out interacting with these spaces in 2016 or so. Early on myself, I’d say “I’m XYZ” and get a bunch of messages with frankly invasive questions and insisting I was fake/lying to myself if I couldn’t craft a perfect answer to them. Maybe I was just in the wrong spaces, though.
I think within fictionkin spaces specifically, I’m less bothered by the inclusion of different types of identity. The issue for me was people taking the label, changing the meaning over time, then insisting the original community members were the ones using it wrong. I’m glad we’ve moved past that for the most part, but there was a good year or two where I couldn’t say I identified as XYZ without getting a dogpile of “fictionkin” saying I must be delusional or or a system. They changed the word to mean “someone who relates to a character,” in their communities.
Basically what I’m getting at is that the labels being “restrictive,” as you put it, is due to the feeling that newer community members trying to change the meaning rather than expand it. Then the older folks would have to coin a new term or find a new place to be. Labels aren’t really the core of the issue, so much as watering down the whole point of a community, or otherwise making up new labels to prove you’re the “most valid.”

thing from old literature that I really enjoy is when theres some specific fact, like a person's name or a date, which isn't actually important enough to include so the author does it by half
like, I started a scifi book last night that started with a transcript of an interview "from 19--" and it made me think of anytime authors like Dumas or Austen would introduce side character "Countess G--" or "Mrs. H--"
like, what year is that interview? doesn't matter, it's not actually important. it's 19XX, not the distant future and maybe even an alternative present day (the book was published in the 70s). what's Mrs. H's name? doesn't matter, we just need enough information to distinguish her from the other ladies who actually have names
maybe there are authors publishing nowadays who do this, but it feels like modern readers would complain about inconcrete data like this. like we're owed the book being a perfect record of at least one character's point of view, and if that character doesn't know someone's name they're going to comment on it and use some alternative description or something. but I personally enjoy seeing those half-details in older books
