Did I just hand-write an implementation of C++23's std::expected for use in C++11, since I'm sorta-kinda stuck with that through all fault of my own? Very, very yes.

Is it complete? No. But it is functional enough.

Am I pleased with it? Also very yes!

Will I use it in Project Special K? I dunno, maybe. We'll see.

I know what all the ostensibly TOS-based fic with some inevitable reference to Kirk having "a reputation" as a cadet at the Academy is really talking about, but ngl I sometimes amuse myself by pretending it's about what TOS actually says about Kirk as a cadet: grim, no sense of humor, loved following rules, crazy about his sweet girlfriend.

(I don't think we're told much else about Academy-era cadet Kirk in TOS, tbh, except that Captain Garrovick snatched him up right out of the Academy, and young Kirk served in his crew and obviously hero-worshipped him until The Incident when he was 23. Even the "stack of books with legs" quote is about Kirk as an officer teaching cadets in a notoriously challenging and demanding course, not him as a cadet himself. But it does amuse me to imagine the "oh of course he had a reputation" asides being about "yeah for never smiling and bringing orange flowers to his girlfriend.")

like it's just so. Befuddling to hear so many people claim the sport has never been more boring and every race is a pain to get through. we've had four different race winners, at least three drivers in the running for the wdc, six rookies ushering in a new generation for formula 1, williams showing signs of a breakthrough. i can only see two reasons why you'd objectively think this is boring: you either weren't watching in 2023, or your memory is tainted by your newfound mclaren hatred because the only way to care about any race result back in 23 was to pretend like the race order started p3 onwards. everyone rejoiced when norris won miami 24. you may hate mclaren and think they're an ugly team (i do) you may like verstappen better than norris as a driver (i do) but your blorbo not winning ≠ the sport is uninteresting. well maybe you have lost interest now that your blorbo is not winning but once again no one is forcing you to stay here
