Justice League Trivia Night: Sci-Fi Edition
The Justice League gathered around a large screen for their trivia game night, the topic of choice was sci-fi. Batman, known for his detective skills, had a surprising admiration for sci-fi as well, particularly Star Wars. He was a staunch defender of the prequels and had an encyclopedic knowledge of the franchise.
Wonder Woman: If only one person could be named the central character of the Star Wars saga, it would be Anakin Skywalker, aka Darth Vader. Vader has had many faces and voices over the last 40 years… He has? Name all the actors who either played Anakin, wore the Darth Vader suit, or voiced Anakin/Vader in a film or TV show. Who would actually know this?
Batman (expecting this): And turn.
Superman and Green Lantern both turned to him, anticipation visible on their faces as they waited for him to answer for their team.
Superman: Go ahead, we know you have the answer.
Batman (without taking a breath): Jake Lloyd played young Anakin, Hayden Christensen was Anakin in Episodes 2 and 3, where he also portrayed Vader, which I continually assert was decent for the series. Matt Lanter was the voice of Anakin in The Clone Wars, and Mat Lucas voiced Anakin in Star Wars: Clone Wars the original 2D micro-series.
Hal (Green Lantern): Damn.
Batman: I’m not finished! David Prowse was the man in the suit in movies 4 and 6, Bob Anderson was the stunt Vader and handled most of the lightsaber fights, James Earl Jones provided Vader's iconic voice, and Sebastian Shaw portrayed the unmasked Vader. And-
Hawkgirl (flabbergasted): There's more?
Batman: Yeah, keep up: C. Andrew Nelson appeared in the suit during additional photography for the special editions, Spencer Wilding was inside the suit for part of Rogue One, and finally, Daniel Naprous was inside the suit for the other part of Rogue One.
A stunned silence enveloped the room as everyone processed his rapid-fire knowledge, until Aquaman started clapping, soon joined by the others.
Batman: Yeah, don't ever doubt I'm a fan, because I defend the prequels.
Wonder Woman (impressed): …The fact that all of that information was on the card as the answer, and you got it all correct, astounds me. Points for Team Batman.
Zatanna (team leader for her team): Damn it! You guys suck at this!
Hawkgirl: Oh, don’t come after me! You’re his friend! Why didn’t you know some of that?
Zatanna: I was into Star Trek!
Vixen (regretting): I should’ve sat this one out.
Amid the banter, Batman sat back, arms crossed, a satisfied smirk creeping onto his face, reveling in the glory of not just defending the prequels, but also impressing his teammates with his unexpected expertise.

why did head (1968) flop so badly, you may ask?
the short answer is: terrible promotion. why the promotion was so terrible is another question entirely. there are two schools of thought: 1) bob rafelson and jack nicholson were being deliberately avant garde and obtuse (maybe to attract a certain psychedelic audience) or 2) deliberate malicious intent from columbia pictures to get rid of the monkees (by November 1968, when the movie premiered, the monkees TV show had been cancelled for 2 months).
Tumblr media
(LA Times, 2008)
what exactly was the ad campaign? Well, it was originally supposed to be Bob Rafelson's head displayed for a few seconds smiling at the camera--according to Wikipedia this was a spoof on Andy Warhol's short film Blowjob (1964). but in the end it was John Brockman, even more unknown, and he was just the guy who was supposed to be filming the clip.
Tumblr media
from Andrew Sandoval's The Monkees Day-by-day Story (page 210). explains more about why they did this. Micky also says he thinks it was a way to get back at the monkees for striking on the first day of filming when they found out they would get no creative credit for the film and had been "getting ripped off pretty badly" basically for years.
another factor was the critics reviews. obviously Head is not your average film, and loads of reviews looked down on it as psychedelic garbled trash. they didn't get it. there were positive reviews of course, but most people just didnt get it (and you cant really blame them - its at its most enjoyable when you are a) a bit of a freak, b) a total anti-capitalist, or c) substantially aware of the horrors the monkees were going through at this point. no film critic at the time ticked all 3 of these boxes). i think at this point bob rafelson panicked, because he wanted the film to do well, he just wanted it to do well independent of the monkees (hubris). there's a funny story about the night before the movie premiered in new york, he and jack nicholson got arrested for putting up stickers promoting head, after jack tried to put one on a police officer's helmet. and it makes me wonder why he then didn't fight harder for the film to do well.
it's funny (re: sad) how so many things came together to bring about the doom of the film: bob rafelson and jack nicholson's own cockiness about how well the film would do, their complete disregard of the what the monkees themselves wanted, the studio being tired of the monkees/already having cancelled the show, the whole phenomenon dying out a little since record sales had gone down (the last album they put out was in february 1968 - by this point it was november, and the Head album wouldn't be released until December)...
another peter quote because I trust him the most (again from the day-by-day story, page 210)
Tumblr media
Mike over the years has said different things, at one point calling Head an assisted suicide (pertaining to his own desires to kill the monkees phenomenon and be seen as a serious musician), at other points calling it a murder (which i think is how peter continued to see it throughout most of his life, while simultaneously recognising its artistic and cinematic merit, and also saying the soundtrack was the record he was proudest of besides headquarters 1967). but here's something Mike said in the Head commentary (some time in the early 2000s) which i find simultaneously funny and devestating:
Tumblr media
so yeah. the main conclusion is that nothing was in Head's favour for it to do well. there were conflicting visions, conflicting motivations, a total lack of interest from Columbia pictures, and no one was on the Monkees' side, not even really the monkees themselves. the world just wasn't ready for the crazy anti-monkees monkee movie. their swag was too different. everybody wanted to kill them. but they didnt have to cos they killed themselves it happens right at the start of the movie and again at the end. WATCH HEAD.

The Mystery of the Abecedarian Academy
The world has changed since the first time The Three Investigators went into action, but some things never go out of style. The persistence of truth. The power of perseverance. The importance of questioning everything.
Conceived and co-written by Elizabeth Arthur, the daughter of Robert Arthur, the creator of the Three Investigators universe, this exciting reboot of the classic series takes its iconic characters into a new age. They return reimagined, reinvigorated, and more relevant than ever.
In the first book of a 26-book story arc, it's the summer before their freshman year in high school and Jupiter Jones, Bob Andrews, and Pete Crenshaw are back on the case in Rocky Beach, California. Their new client, Isabella Chang, wants to discover the truth about a murdered ancestor whose son Li Chang is rumored to have hidden a bag of gold nuggets his father panned from the American River during the heady days of the California gold rush.
With their old friend and mentor Hector Sebastian moving to Wyoming and their longtime driver Worthington leaving the Rent'n'Ride to set up a business of his own, The Three Investigators are facing big changes. Nevertheless, they manage to convince Worthington to drive them to the Gold Country in a rented four-wheel drive, stopping along the way to set up camp in Yosemite.
Before they take off, Jupiter's Uncle Titus returns to the Salvage Yard with a new haul of unusual old items, including a suit of armor and eight Chinese talismans painted on hammered metal – one of which is a Talisman Against Demons. In Yosemite, Bob gets an unexpected call from a menacing relative of Isabella Chang who seems determined to scare them off the case. Thus begins a tale of intrigue, misdirection, hunches, ciphers, clues, coincidences, and a classic blend of legwork and analysis.
Why was the one-room schoolhouse where Li Chang was educated suddenly razed to the ground? Why is its foundation being guarded by a wild-eyed woman with a shotgun? Who stole letters addressed to Li Chang's Irish schoolmaster? What does the Owl of Athena carved on Li Chang's grave marker mean? And why was Li Chang so secretive about the location of his hidden gold?
Join Jupiter, Pete, and Bob as they ponder the complexity of a book cipher and uncover secrets hidden for generations. Adventure, danger, and intrigue await in this absorbing new episode in the Three Investigators saga. Whether you're a long-time fan or are meeting the boys for the first time, you'll be glad to be part of this new beginning.
The Mystery of the Brobdingnagian Beast
In the second book of a 26-book story arc, the Three Investigators find themselves on a dangerous mission to uncover the truth of what's happening on a film being shot in Sonoma, California, location of the historic Bear Flag rebellion. Pete Crenshaw's father, a set construction manager, enlists the team to help when strange events begin unfolding on the set of Bear Valley, a movie about the controversial explorer and politician, John C. Frémont.
From the moment the boys arrive, they're thrust into a chaotic mix of violence, protests, and intrigue. A mysterious group called OUTLAW is determined to shut down the film. As its members push against police barricades in their black masks, tensions run high between two feuding historians - Phillipa Paxton and Daniel Hernández - with competing views on Frémont's legacy.
The team faces explosive threats, the masked mob, and a reenactment of the past with a twist: a man who believes he is the reincarnation of a 19th-century Pomo bear-doctor. But the deeper they dig, the more they realize that what seems like a simple protest is just the surface of a much darker, more dangerous conspiracy. Phillipa Paxton puts The Three Investigators on the trail of a piece of Frémont memorabilia, and their suspicions are aroused when it turns out that someone else has been searching high and low for the same item.
Who is behind the mysterious keg of gunpowder that's set off on set? Who slashed Dr. Paxton's tires and left ominous signs of their presence near her garage? What's the connection between a Frémont artifact that reportedly burned in the Great San Francisco Fire of 1906 and a strange letter supposedly signed by the famous frontiersman, Kit Carson?
Join the team as they sift truth from falsehood and face a real-life villain with a heart of darkness in this thrilling continuation of the new Three Investigators saga. Whether you're a long-time fan or new to the series, you'll find yourself part of an adventure that mixes history, mystery, and the ever-present need to fight for what's right.
The Mystery of the Chimeric Cornucopia
In the third book of a 26-book story arc, the Three Investigators head to Jackson, California, for a Fourth of July celebration at the vineyard of their new friend Branko Petrovic. Jupiter hopes the visit will bring him closer to solving the mystery of his long-dead mother, but his only clue is that she was Serbian - and her name, Amanda Morris, doesn't seem to fit.
After receiving a finder's fee from their summer's first case, the boys use part of their earnings to buy a used car, and Worthington drives them north. On the way, Bob shares a story about André Laurent, a French-Canadian counterfeiter and murderer who had been arrested in Jackson twenty-five years earlier, only to skip bail and vanish.
The investigation takes an unexpected turn when the boys stumble upon Laurent's old counterfeiting operation - an offset press and engraved plates for printing one-hundred-dollar bills - hidden deep in a cavern on Branko's family's property, and guarded by a colony of nesting bats. But their interest and amazement soon turn to trepidation when they realize Laurent has returned to reclaim the stolen plates, and that they're holding the evidence he'll stop at nothing to get back.
Where has André Laurent been for the past twenty-five years and why has he burned off his own fingerprints? How does he find out where The Three Investigators are staying? And how is all of this connected to Jupiter's mysterious past? As fireworks light up the sky at Dragutin Wines, Jupiter uncovers part of the truth about his mother, but a dangerous confrontation with Laurent leaves the boys facing life-threatening peril.
Join Jupiter, Pete, and Bob as they uncover the facts about a quarter-century-old crime, chase down a ruthless criminal, and discover the truth about Jupiter's parentage in this action-packed new addition to the Three Investigators series.

People I'd Like to Know: Tumblr Tag Game
Algy was tagged by his friend @edinburgh-by-the-sea in Scotland's beautiful capital city, whom he thanks very kindly for choosing him. Algy wasn't sure whether his friend really wanted to know about his own fluffy bird tastes or those of his assistant, so he has answered for both 😀
Algy's current obsession: finding his way home in time for Christmas 🎄 His assistant's current obsession: maintaining health and finding time and energy to produce exciting new work for Algy's assistants' new collaborative tumblr blog @novelties-and-notions in addition to assisting Algy with his adventures every single day…
Algy is looking forward to: Christmas, Hogmanay (a tumblr party?), and his 13th tumblr birthday on 13th March 2025 (definitely a tumblr party!) Double 13! 🎄🎉🎁 His assistant is looking forward to: all kinds of new adventures in creativity
Last book Algy read: The Oxford Book of English Verse. As many of Algy's followers will know, Algy loves good poetry and has his own Algy-sized collection of volumes of verse. Last books Algy's assistant read (re-read): The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann, in translation, and Joy in the Morning by P G Wodehouse.
Algy's assistant is sometimes asked for reading recommendations. She spent much time on her own when young, and therefore started reading, and learned to love books, at a precociously early age… there was nothing else to do! Significant influences which persist to this day include, roughly IN THE ORDER ORIGINALLY READ from early childhood: Beatrix Potter and the Winnie the Pooh stories; many classic collections of fairytales (esp. collected by Andrew Lang and the Brothers Grimm) and the works of Hans Christian Anderson; The Wind in the Willows; fairytale/fantasy works by George MacDonald; Peter Pan; the Dr. Dolittle stories by Hugh Lofting; Lewis Carroll; The Cuckoo Clock by Mrs Molesworth; The Secret Garden and The Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett; works by Rudyard Kipling; C S Lewis; J R R Tolkien (first read at the age of 9 but only occasionally since); P G Wodehouse (20th century master of the use of English and of humour – a lifelong indulgence in reading); Charles Dickens (his descriptive powers have rarely if ever been equalled); Arthurian Romances; and all works by Jane Austen, Henry James, Thomas Mann, Kurt Vonnegut, Joseph Heller and – beyond fiction – Ludwig Wittgenstein. And of course Shakespeare, who inevitably has some influence on anyone who has ever studied English, plus many, many other more forgettable writers in various genres.
Although many of the titles above were written as fiction for children, she has continued to re-read those works over the years, as may be evident in Algy's adventures 😀
And for those who have asked for reading recommendations, especially those folk of an older generation who have not yet had the opportunity to read very much – and also for aspiring writers – she would say that if you have not yet read much literature, but wish to, then don't waste precious time on lesser authors but read the very best stuff first 😊
(And anyone who wishes to "be a writer", in no matter what kind of genre or style, is advised to first of all master the use of language – and the best way to do that is by reading past masters extensively. Like any other highly skilled activity, if you want to mess around with it and make it jump through hoops, you have to thoroughly master the basic skill set first.)
Last song Algy listened to: When the red, red robin comes bob, bob, bobbin' along 😀
Last movie Algy watched: Mary Poppins (the original 1964 movie) Algy is fascinated by the incredible animation with live action sequence, and by the remarkable Dick van Dyke, who has just celebrated his 99th birthday! Last movies Algy's assistant watched: W C Fields' International House and the Marx Brothers The Cocoanuts… Why a duck? 🤣
Last TV show: Algy and his assistant NEVER watch televsion, though they do watch movies. They have better things to do with their time than watch TV 😀 Algy's assistant's family didn't have a television until she was about 10 years old, and much of her adult life has been spent without television too.
Sweet/spicy/savory: Not really. 🌰🍏🍉🥦🍓🧀🥕🍚🍅🥛🥒🍞
Favourite colour: Green and yellow and orange 💚🧡💛😀
Last thing we googled: Google Translate – for help with communication with tumblr friends who don't speak English ☺️ And Google Maps to find out where is where, as Algy has followers all over the world. His grasp of geography is fluffy, and his assistant's is not much better!
Relationship status: Algy is of course in a fluffy relationship with his rather incompetent assistant, who is permanently united with her lifelong partner and spouse.
Tagging: Algy understands that he is supposed to tag friends to prompt them to play too, but he suspects that the folk he would most like to know about might feel too shy or unduly pressured to do this. So he invites ALL his friends to play this game, and leaves it up to them. He would love to know more about you 😍

BROWNLOW: Not so long ago, when it was put to a very distinguished police officer that the number of WPCs should be increased, he replied in a light-hearted vein, ‘Is recruiting so bad that we now have to breed our own, as we attempted to do with dogs and horses?’
At least his audience all realised how terrible the "joke" was. Chrissy & Frank’s friendship was great, and I’m glad they prioritized it and his support of her in her last episode.
A fitting ending for both Christine & Taffy: more sexist BS for her and more lack of understanding and acknowledgement for him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MONROE: In my opinion, this whole story sounds ridiculous, and I don’t think we should be giving idle gossip any further currency. RANDOM HIGH RANKER: My feelings entirely. MONROE: But, for what it’s worth, I’ll say this: any male officer who molests a female officer ought to be out on his ear before he’s buttoned his trousers—and good riddance to bad rubbish. RANDOM HIGH RANKER: I hear what you say, Andrew. [disdainfully] Ready for another mineral water?
Then, of course, there’s the new inspector. And some nameless twat who thinks not getting sozzled around your superiors is a bad thing.

Boy Band Beauties
You’re getting married next week, and gosh dang it you were put in charge of selecting a local boy band to play live at the reception. You royally goofed and waited until the last minute. With this kind of short notice the pickings are sorta slim.
You searched high and low and found four bands with availability on your wedding day.
Who are you hiring?
