irina let out a quiet hum, the kind that could mean agreement or just delayed amusement. she glanced away—her eyes fixed on a woman in pearls laughing a little too loudly near the mayor’s portrait. “no,” she said finally, voice low and measured. “never met him. that sort of…liaison is reserved for the men in my family." a pause. she turned back to him now, lips curved in something that wasn't quite a smile. "it's a memorial fit for a mayor. clean. controlled. no one's crying hard enough to ruin their mascara.” irina could always sense when something had been curated. even grief. "you never answered my question, by the way. would you? want to be memorialized like this, i mean." she swirls the drink in her glass without drinking it, brows piqued.

he had kept himself in the sidelines on purpose . sure his siblings were out there being sociable , he didn't feel the need to keep up the family charm today instead just watching . it was his favorite thing to do really , even if he was called weird for it most of the time . today was like an explosion of potential observations and as sick as it might have been , the youngest o'rourke found himself having a good time . sure, he would likely end up fixing something at the end of the night when the dust settled but for now watching everything unfold ? his shoulders heavy with the tension in the room ? brennan was calm in this type of environment . " you never met him did you ?" the male smirked at the question , hands stuffed into his pockets. " he would love this . "

Some of my favorite Tula and Viola moments from this episode so far. Love these two wary and weary sisters.

any recommendations for light/silly fantasy for someone who's read most of them? favourites are: finding home by hari conner, so this is ever after, emily wilde, the ruthless lady's guide to wizardry, legends and lattes, terry pratchett. also liked the very secrety society of irregular witches, the league of gentlewomen witches, tress of the emerald sea, some other f t lukens books, swordheart, fangs by sarah anderson. so anything with those vibes that are not one of those. I do want to read half a soul and psalm for the wild-built but I can't get them currently through my library.
Wow you were not kidding when you said you had read most of them! Many we would typically recommend are already in your list, but we DO have some more for you that hopefully you haven't read!
Oh, and real quick: You may have already done this, but if you haven't - check and see if your library has a purchase request or interlibrary loan service. Many libraries do, and often people don't know about it. They might be able to get you Half a Soul and Psalm for the Wild-Built if they know you're looking for them!
Now on to the recs:
Rachel says:
I have not read it yet, but I have heard great things about A Lady's Guide to Marvels and Misadventure by Angela Bell. And as a kid, I loved Bunnicula by James & Deborah Howe.
Abby says:
Try A Spell for Heartsickness by Alistair Reeves. The MC is a manic witch with a snarky corvid familiar, and they have to navigate setting up shop in a remote village that's harboring secrets and surrounded by some creepy woods.
Since you like FT Lukens I think you'd like this too.
Robin says:
In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan - it's portal fantasy and the main character is incredibly genre aware. And sarcastic about it. The author is on tumblr and it shows (in a good way!)
Since you like T. Kingfisher, if you haven't continued on with Paladin's Grace yet it's very much in the vein of Swordheart so give that a look. You could also try A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking which is a bit different to the World of the White Rat books but still great!
The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede was a formative read for me. Princess Cimorene is determined to avoid marriage so she arranges to get herself carried off by a dragon. It's a delight. Start with Dealing with Dragons.
--
Hopefully there are a few there you haven't read yet and that you'll like! You can also check out our fantasy tag for all the fantasy recs we've made here over the years, light-hearted and otherwise!

I’m a sucker for Graphic audio adaptations of fantasy book series lately. I was super late to the party but I listened to all of the ACOTAR books. They literally scared me (LOL 😂) so it’s been awhile since I wanted to come back to that sort of genre. Luckily for me Forth Wing has a graphic audio adaptation too! I’m still on book one. But I’ve listened to the first sex scene twice lol. Other than that I’m really impressed with the voice acting and I really get transported into a different world when I’m listening. I laughed a lot too the first time I listened to it. It’s sorta funny but cute. Little cheesy. But the experience of listening to the audio drama is enough to have me fully immersed in the story. Which I love.

i think sam/evan is cute, but i like to think of them as a is a schrodinger's couple and that they could be friends or a couple. i think they'll be just friends in the show bc that seems to be the emphasis this season but i like seeing them both platonically and romantically in the fandom

Thinking about Oisin’s “☝️👉 Sorry” message to Adaine, and Jace Stardiamond telling the Rat Grinders to stop antagonising the Bad Kids.
Thinking about how Oisin is clearly a manipulative and conniving and brilliant wizard who was watching his adventuring party break that rule, and had the perfect way to get them to cut it out and further his role in their masterminded plan at the same time.
Thinking about the posts I’ve seen about that moment meaning that he must actually care for Adaine, and completely disagreeing with them

Anyways I'm so fucking relieved that Porter was evil actually. Bc I was actually so damn mad that he got to be right about Gorgug. Like there's just something insidious about the idea of a teacher who comes in and says they know more about what your path should be. And they push and push and keep telling you that they're only hurting you bc they know you can do more. And it doesn't matter if you feel that way or even if you want to do more, bc they've decided they know the right path for you. And it's only ever your life and your sanity on the line; they're risking nothing. So I was so fucking mad when Gorgug succeeded at the barbificer thing and Porter got to be all 'see? I was only pushing you bc I believed in you' bc you better believe if Gorgug hadn't managed it, the blame would've been on him not Porter....
Anyways with the hindsight that Porter is basically the big bad, it suddenly becomes a question of if Porter even wanted Gorgug to succeed. Like they had to know the Bad Kids were the biggest threat to their plan, so like. Undermining them in whatever way was possible would be smart. And so instead of Porter getting to be Right about how to treat Gorgug, it's like. Was he sabotaging him? Was he trying to make Gorgug fail? And it becomes more that Gorgug succeeded in spite of Porter's bullshit.

Brennan. Brennan where’s the ball. Where is it. You can’t give us a cache of knowledge carefully sequestered in safety during the Calamity without mentioning Patia’s ball. Where. Is. It.

Kipperlilly Copperkettle will always make me crazy b/c she is both the lucifer and the jesus of paradise lost; like lucifer's feelings of betrayal toward god b/c Jesus out of all the angels in the court of heaven, is the only one elevated to the position of the son, the one who gets to be special, and even tho Lucifer's life does not materially change!!! he feels denied!!! He feels entitled! And so he falls with the belief that god is a tyrant! And kipperlilly sees the bad kids for who they are! Sees the hand of god! But also, when god needs someone to take the fall for the sins of man, instead of having to pick someone to be his sacrificial lamb, Jesus volunteers, letting god off the hook and disproving lucifer's belief that god is a tyrant. A tyrant would appoint someone to go down with the ship, but no, jesus volunteered. Kipperlilly was always going to accept the mark of ankarna voluntarily, she was designed to do so, because there is no other way to disband the school. A class president / acting principle cannot be compelled to disband the school. She has to have free will for the ritual to work, but she was always designed by brennan to have free will b/c its the only way to justify the plot. Schrodinger's autonomy!!!!! She is both Lucifer, the one who sees right through god's tyranny, and jesus, the one who volunteers, disproving god's tyranny and validating his insistence on free will!!!!
