Week 8: Digital Citizenship and Health Education: Body Modification on Visual Social Media 

Welcome back to my Tumblr blog ~ Today's topic is about body modification on visual social media and investigating how social media influences body media, digital changes, and health education to promote educated and healthy digital citizenship. 

First of all, Body Modification such as piercing, tattoos, cosmetic surgery, and extreme fitness regimes has become normalized and widespread throughout social media, such as Instagram, Snapchat, Threads, and TikTok. Social media has become the main communication tool for our daily lives (Smri.world, 2025). People use it to communicate, share, and engage in content posts and allow people to express themself. Social media interaction plays a crucial role in shaping the individual's perspective and motivations for following aesthetic surgery.

On the online, we can usually find out these two types of body modification that are physical and digital. Physical modification is more related to cosmetic surgery, tattoos, and piercings, and digital modification is more relevant to the filters on applications, photo editing apps, and digital retouching. Body dissatisfaction and social appearance anxiety are the main causes that drive people to have plastic surgery. They fear and are also concerned about how people seek them when they are in a social situation or public. The psychological and societal factors influence how young adults view and feel and view their content with their body shape and size, and nobody, regardless of age, ethnicity, or socioeconomic level, is immune to these effects. All of these studies lead both women and men to become increasingly dissatisfied with specific body features, prompting them to contemplate cosmetic surgery (Mironica, 2024). 

For instance, recently I have found out an influencer from Vietnam that known for promoting natural beauty and body confidence. This influencer built her online reputation on embracing one’s flaws and rejecting cosmetic enhancement. But recently, she posted a video publicly that shows she had undergone breast implant surgery (South China Morning Post, 2025). After she posted, her fans felt betrayed, stating that her decision was contrary to the core values she had previously advocated. Through this example, the influencer has the right to alter their bodies, but the way they change is portrayed on social media platforms like Instagram can influence the self-esteem and health behaviors of liable audiences. So, it is important to combine health education with digital awareness so it can lead users to more informed and respectful aspects around body modification no matter online or offline.

Of course a think tank that caters to the rich would oppose a wealth tax. You’re being duped by the ultra rich who want to stay rich as we all earn poverty wages.

Also all that quote proves is that the rich will be taxed more…which they should.

The NDP’s wealth tax is a 1% tax on those earning over 20 million dollars. The ultra rich are not going to be hurt by this tax. I will shed no crocodile tears for the ultra rich facing a single $1000 tax on a $100,000 investment. Oh boo hoo, the rich will lose a tiny bit of money. SO SAD.

That tax by the way will fund action on climate change, universal pharmacare, dental, vision and hearing care and greater social supports for vulnerable people.

In parts of Washington State, as few as 65% of kindergarten students have immunization for measles according to Vox.com. In some New York Orthodox communities, vaccination rates can be as low as 50%. This is partially because 47 out of 50 US allow religious or philosophical exemptions for vaccines. In Canada, overall vaccination is increasing, and vaccine skepticism is decreasing, according to a 2015 Canada Health study. However, there have still been a number of recent outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases across Canada. The C.D. Howe institute says that “fence-sitting parents”, or parent’s whose children are only partially immunized, are in fact contributing to these more recent outbreaks in Canada. The institute recommends direct communication to these parents in order to change their mind on vaccination. Their list of communication ideas are *drumroll please*....

I say that these forms of communication are vastly insufficient today. Through social media, we can increase overall vaccination rates. Here’s how.

Step 1: The Haiku

Step 2: The Goal

Our campaign goal would be to convince parents of partially immunized children to fully vaccinate their kids. We will shoot for a roughly 70% improvement in this area, in order to bring the total immunization rate to 95%. We will work in this sector of parents as they are the most likely to have their mind changed.

Step 3: The Platform

We will use Facebook, digital blog advertisements, and Netflix. We will use targeted Facebook ads for users between 30-50 years old and who have previously expressed interest in Anti-Vax posts. The Facebook and other digital ads will mostly a photo of a crying child with an article link titled “How to keep your kids safe”. The article will describe the dangers of leaving your kids partially or un-vaccinated, as well as the public health threat it poses. The effectiveness of this ad will be in the photo of the crying child, and the enticing and mysterious title. This coordinated effort will target the average users of Facebook, of which the average age is 40.5 years. Simultaneously, we will release a documentary on Netflix. This film will describe the dangers of leaving your children unvaccinated, and simultaneously showcase the every day lives of anti-vaxxers. By showcasing the absurdities in the anti-vaccination argument, we will hopefully convince vaccine-hesitant parents to fully vaccinate their kids.

Step 4: The Action

For all of our platforms, the goal of the ad is to convince parents to fully vaccinate their children. The action which our audience can partake in is fully vaccinating their kids. If the vaccination rate among elementary school children rises as a result of the campaign, then the campaign is successful.

Step 5 : The Limitations

The main limitation of our campaign will be engagement. Any ad, especially those online, can be quite easily ignored. This means most of our efforts will fall mostly on dead ears. This will be hopefully countered by the simultaneous release of a Netflix documentary to engage our audience and prime them for a more positive view of vaccines.

With a coordinated media effort, we can re-vaccinate our population and prevent outbreaks of preventable diseases such as measles, smallpox, diphtheria.
