Our little tiebreaker is here, and it's a BOY! Mr. Caleb Josiah Wagner came racing into our lives at 3:15PM.

This labor was my quickest yet, actually! Colin had his phone off at work, so he had no idea what had happened until he walked through our front door. I think this is the biggest surprise he's ever come home to!

Me going on spotify and looking at ppls character playlists and internally shitting on them for not understanding my blorbo like I do. And then I make one. And someone across the internet thinks I'm misunderstanding blorbo. And then they make one. And then-

what do you think of the English fan covers of papermoon and which version do you like the most if you do??

Yeah, I've listened to several.

I won't go into which ones I don't like and why, which...is most of them. Because I don't want to insult people's awesome efforts. But I'll say that generally the reasons I will end up disliking a cover are a collection of a few reasons: bad mixing; melody and/or rhythm departs too much from the original (I'll go into this more), translation that departs too much from the original.

That said, so far my favorite English cover is Caleb Hyles. And it's funny cuz I don't usually go for his stuff. But, it's a great mix, it sticks to the song overall, the translation does its best to use the actual translation where it can... Words such as "degraded" that you just wouldn't really see, for example. He kept in as much as made sense, I felt, and didn't poeticize it too much; he really tried to stay true.

And of course, his surprise switch to Japanese at the end was great.

And what I said about melody/rhythm departing too much... We have to remember, it's often the case that the songwriter wrote those specific notes/melody for a reason and so changing them can in fact change the entire feel of the song.

I'll give an example.... "Comet" from Steven Universe. Every single note and rhythm she wrote very precisely.

On that last word, reaction, the melody drops an interval of a fourth and the drop there in combination with the lyrics is meant to show Greg's dejection. Also the initial word of the second and third lines there, the melody starts an octave below before rising. This adds to the anchoring feel of those lyrics, of negative things that have been spoken over him.

Still, this is the final frontier Everything is so clear To my destiny I steer

The initial melodic notes of the second and third line here stay in the same octave, making the melody sound more confident (ironically the same note though... makes you wonder if there's a subliminal doubting in Greg of his choices) but with that confidence added from the constancy of the initial melodic notes, each conclusion sounds more certain, more hopeful, even though the chordal structure is the same.

So, melody matters. Don't change it. (Like every single cover of Comet out there... I like none.)

I could go into the importance of the super-triplet rhythm of Comet but...this was supposed to be about Papermoon. 😅😅😅

Sorry sorry sorry, Comet is just like...one of the best songs ever written in terms of how the music represents a character... It's a modern Wagnerian approach and boy does it succeed.

Wagner, you're nearly spot on.

I think Atalanta's one of the most morally gray characters that I have (Caleb's mother's way more morally gray than her lol, and probably Lei, as well), and she more than anyone embodies the result of one of the overarching themes of tkc: the lack of reproductive and sexual freedom imposed on Saz, the blatant lying for millennia and the systemic murder and criminalisation of humans who fancy imlia and vice versa, all because Simone--a child of a human woman and an imlium man--doesn't want someone like her to exist, since her in-between genetics has given her, not her immortality, but her ability to have multiple hosts, even those who have insignias she can then use (that's why she can make time loops: one of her hosts is the First Historian, but I digress). Wagner, there's no such thing as an illness borne out of human-imlia relationships, but God doesn't want you to know.

Idk if I've ever told you, but Atalanta started dating Oliver because a few months prior she and Sekros had confessed their feelings for each other and that led to them having a few kisses which then made her Freak Out. Oliver was Atalanta's way of detoxifying herself after her encounter with Sekros (thus protecting herself and Sekros and warding off a plague, etc), however she felt absolutely no attraction for Oliver because she simply doesn't like humans.

Still, she played the part of a good girlfriend. She kissed Oliver, she fooled around when he wanted to fool around, and eventually, when he wanted to get more intimate, she pretended like she did as well. I don't want to get into details because I'm pretty sure you're sex repulsed, but basically Atalanta wound up seeing intimacy as a script she learned and didn't quite know when to recite, since it lacked nuance, so she was liable to recite it at the wrong time. That explains THAT scene.

However, she stopped her Oliver told her to, didn't press him further and she's apologised a gazillion times. That alone could make Oliver forgive him if it weren't for the fact that by the end of tsc Atalanta's told him about her feelings for Sekros (Sekros and her are dating in secret in lotgb) and why she started dating him. So Oliver now has major trust issues on top of the family issues he already had, and he also feels somewhat paranoid and low-key disgusted because, dude, he doesn't know that the human-imlium illness isn't real. And also also, he hates that he's disgusted by something Atalanta can't control, and that gives him other issues.

Long story short, idk how to redeem Atalanta, not only for THAT scene, but also due to the negative impact her relationship in general has had on Oliver. But I also need to redeem her for overarching reasons :')

caleb is a pure soul. well, he should have been, had life given him a better lot. not that he ever complains. or talks about anything in his past. long story short he will never return home and has spent most of his life travelling around never putting in roots.

until palmview. he's been here for three years now and they have been amongst the best of his life, despite the heartbreak that found him here. what started as a great friendship, turned into a loving relationship, and now its nothing more than a toxic mess. but he can't help but keep going back. after all, no one knows him the way she does ( off and on exes with clem @sunpaintedsea ).

It’s the way that I’ve been HUNTING for asexual representation lately and yet I have only ever found one (1) book that’s ace4ace, and the other half of that particular relationship is a monster/god/definitely not human which is overall unfortunate. The rest of the representation, though? Tash Hearts Tolstoy? Ace4allo. Heartbreak high? Ace4allo. The book I’m reading right now? You guessed it, ace4allo. Wagner, nothing wrong with allosexual folk, but I just want to see asexual people in love with one another and I want stories where there’s a plurality, at the very least a duality, of ace characters, and yeah maybe I want them some of those ace characters to be together romantically in love 391 kilometres from prospective allo love interests.

If Haoritt turn out to be the only ace4ace main couple I see I won’t be responsible for my actions.
