Living From Your Gift, Not Just Your Job
There’s something unsettling about waking up each day knowing you’re headed to a job that brings no joy, no peace, and no passion. It’s a feeling too many people carry quietly—the dread of the daily grind. But what if we’ve been looking at work and fulfillment all wrong?
I believe that within each of us, God has placed a gift. A talent. A passion. Something that doesn’t just make money—but makes sense of our lives. And when we ignore that gift, when we bury it under responsibilities or fear, we start to feel a deep disconnect—not just from ourselves, but from the One who made us.
So Why Do We Stay Stuck?

Because it’s easier to follow a paycheck than to follow a calling. A paycheck comes with guarantees. A calling comes with faith. And that’s where things get hard—because faith requires trust in a process that isn’t always clear.

+ “Never regard study as a duty but as an enviable opportunity to learn to know the liberating influence of beauty in the realm of the spirit for your own personal joy and to the profit of the community to which your later works belong.” — Albert Einstein
Why do we do what we do?
Recently Peter Hutton, founder of Future Schools Alliance (FSA) published a thought piece around this theme of “why do we (teachers) do what we do”. His provocation got me thinking about why I do what I do.
I believe we are all on our own unique and personal journey, where we all seek understanding, meaning, wisdom and knowledge. Where we want to know why we’re here. Where we crave purpose, acceptance and love. Remembering that none of us directly operates within the world as it is. We create internal representations, or maps, of the world based on our perceptions and experience of it.
So, why do you do what you do? Throughout my life journey, I have witnessed the different motivations of people as to their “why”. Some out of need, obligation or simply ticking boxes, as set out by society. Or some do it from a position of pride, out of a sense of duty. Other times I have encountered individuals motivated for purely selfish reasons. I have also met people who operate from a passion that burns deep inside. And some people, no doubt, do what they do for attention or affection. Which one of these resonates with your own lived experience to date?
So, I return to my why. For me, it has always been these two simple drivers:
1. For Self-Actualisation
Often our best actions are deeply rooted in love and done for others. However, we are best positioned to love someone else when we’ve worked resolutely to forge a new horizon for ourselves. My evolution as an educator and as a man has enabled my relationships with self, God, place and the other to flourish even more.
When we do the work and invest in improving ourselves, we evolve all aspects of our being. Then, we take what we’ve learned and share that light and love with the other. This feeling of self-actualisation is worth actively working toward for true personal fulfillment. Think Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.
2. For All
I come full circle with this one and re-iterate the words of Einstein above. Let your thoughts, words and actions, manifested in a most munificent manner, be for “the profit of the community to which your later works belong.”
Effective educators leave a legacy, and a tremendous influence on the life of the other. This is a privilege and gift. Our actions have the capacity to leave an echo throughout eternity. When education chose me, it become apparent that I had assumed the responsibility of this social imperative to act in the best interests of young people. We should never forget that each young person in our care is home to a life. And I am therefore called to support each young person in my care, in discovering their inherent possibility.
This is the human act of giving. Therefore generosity, love and kindness are not impulsive reactions. They require a profound consciousness and concern for the other. They’re communicated via your considered words and the intent of your actions that inspire and radiate hope. The gifts of gratitude and love will be yours in return.
“We are the ones that help others succeed. We are the ones behind the success of people making significant contributions in the world. Collectively we are the ones that influence the tone for society and bring exceptional learning experiences to young people.” ~ Peter Hutton | Founder Future Schools Alliance
My vocation allows me the opportunity to enter into the lives of young people and assist them in shaping what type of person they aspire to be. As an educator I know I need to honour this truth and embrace the privilege and price of giving their life, their why the breath of abundant living.
Hutton’s provocation also got be thinking around what the costs are of fearing personal success and being afraid of becoming who you are called to be, your why.
Well the truth is you too are home to a life. Your heart is not a place to visit. It is your home. Unleash your “why” and embrace what burns inside of you. Honour this truth. Honour your heartbeat. Honour your sound. For it is your authentic self the world wishes to see, not another person afraid of their own possibility or their why. Honour a life lived on your terms. Think peace of mind, clarity of thought and the attainment of hopes and dreams.
You owe it to yourself to not simply exist but give your life, your why, the breath of living.

I have been called to serve in the NZ Auckland Mission. I will report to the MTC on December 5th, 2019 and I am so, so, so looking forward to it. I am looking forward to all the connections with people I will make and the friendships I am going to develop. It is exciting to think about how different life is going to be but I feel very lucky to be going to my home country. It is weird, because I psyched myself up to learn a language or go somewhere I had never been and when I read that I would be going to Auckland, I thought “oh yeah, makes sense, duh, of course I am going to Auckland”. Obviously I had NO IDEA, but it just made sense to me. I am so excited and have family in Auckland so I know it will be easier for me to adapt.
Ultimately, I am excited to share with people how the gospel of Jesus Christ has changed my life for the better. I know that I am happy living the standards the church sets for it’s members, although it hasn’t been easy and I have struggled as we all do with some things, I know that living by these standards has made my life so much better. I love who I am when I am trying my best to learn and being the best version of myself. I know most of the time I can do better and there are times I think, why bother trying? But then there are times when I see how trying has been worth it. Heavenly Father knows us and is very much aware of our struggles and shortcomings. He is in the details. I am so excited to live my life for Him and I hope that I can keep Him at the forefront of my mind as I prepare to serve my mission and I look forward to the lessons I am going to learn, leading up to and throughout my time in Auckland.

today, I was called to serve as the Ward Technology Specialist of Mulhouse Ward, Nancy Stake ❤️ the Ward Technology Specialist is one of the recent changes/addition in the General Handbook and their responsibilities can include the following: 1. Assist ward leaders with technical needs. 2. Teach members how to access and use Church media, apps, and other technology tools, including FamilySearch.org. 3. Support leaders and teachers who use technology tools to fulfill their callings. 4. Manage streaming of meetings and classes for those who cannot attend. 📻📺📟 when i transferred to Mulhouse, I promised our Heavenly Father to do my best to serve Him, and now He called me to help and bless other church members to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ through the use of technology — i know that these responsibilities comes with a promise that He would bless me spiritually and temporally 🤍 there’s a little resistance from some of the members because I was asked to give the closing prayer and I did it in English, a brother approached me and was wondering how i’ll fulfill my calling when i don’t speak french — so he asked me about my background then i responded to him in french and explained that sometimes my brain gets blocked when speaking french in front of hundred of french-speaking people, but of course i can understand and speak french now (but sometimes i need time to process 😅) — afterwards, he understood me and was thankful, then told me that we live in the same area 😅 some other members approached me and asked help already — this calling would definitely help me know everyone in the ward 😜😍 #amazingadventuresofbeaujethro #calling #calledtoserve #thechurchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints #churchofjesuschrist #technology #itguy #ateguy #biotechnology (wrong hashtag, this is for my work hehe) 😅 #sunday #mulhouse #france #alsace (at Mulhouse, France) https://www.instagram.com/p/CleF9yJN-MP/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Replenishing my mind and soul from a weekend that utilized some of my favorite talents and left me happily exhausted. I love the talents that God created in me. They are truly my joys and blessings wrapped in one. By the way it’s ok to admit we have talents. And to acknowledge our skills and to use them. God created them in each of us. When we can see this the opportunities and joys are limitless. So tonight I’m enjoying a hot cup of soup, sitting&knitting, catching up on hydration and AC lol. Happy Sunday evening friends. #sitandknitforabit #talents #creativity #dowhatyoulove #calledtoserve #knitting #ilovegreen #wool #exhausted #truejoy #agoodday #celebrationoflife #hellofriends #guthealthjourney #guthealthmatters #achesandpains (at Salem, Oregon) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfSut_FFZlm/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

This morning while I was diving into a convicting devotional around servant leadership I felt the habit of needing to “escape” and jump on social media or look at my to-do list. I most definitely think this was the enemy trying to deter my growth in Him. So I leaned into the urge & instead opened up another app that lead me to His word, Infinitum. And today’s prompt was from the founder of the organization I am serving in.
God doesn’t place these things in your life on accident. He is speaking to you. When the enemy tries to distract you; when he tries to remind you of your insecurities; and when he tries to tell you that you don’t have time to sit down to be with God… fight it. Stay anchored in the truth & even in the hard moments you will be sweetly reminded of Gods everlasting presence with you. God is good.

+ “Let us remember: One book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the world.” – Malala Yousafzai
I Am A Teacher
Each week I have the pleasure of working with young people, each on their own journey in a quest to navigate this thing called life. All learning about their particular details. This week I had a number of encounters that reminded me of this privileged gift.
On Monday a group of Year 9 boys departed to participate in the six-week immersion learning experience in Yogyakarta as part of the Victorian Young Leaders to Indonesian Program. Two teachers have given up three weeks of their time, their expertise and their family to ensure each young man has a most positive encounter with self, place and the other. Two teachers are doing this.
On Wednesday I watched our AGSV Athletics team win the AGSV Championship at Lakeside Stadium, our second ever Athletics title, with the first coming in 1968. I watched the captain inspire his team to victory, breaking the AGSV record in the discus event. A group of teachers have given of their time to instill a passion for the competition, for each other and for track and field sports. This group of teachers gave an interest in the lives of each team member, encouraging them to be their best. A group of teachers did this.
At that same event I watched as a student humbly received accolades from all those present for having his design selected as the official logo to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the AGSV. A teacher recognised his gift of design. A teacher encouraged him to enter his work into the competition. A teacher did that.
On Thursday my own Unit 4 VCE Visual Communication Design students submitted their folios and final presentations, much of which they commenced in late May. Each young man has focused on growth and improving their academic achievement based of continuous feedback from myself and their peers. Each student produced a body of work that is impressive, on brief and representative of hard work, trial and error and creative innovation. I am proud of each of them. All I do is create opportunities for each to share their unique gift with the world.
We should never underestimate the far reaching implications of a teacher’s impact on a student, which are never ending. We must never forget the power we have to shape, and change lives forever.
There is no greater responsibility than raising a child. This requires a conscious connectedness with our truth and our compassion for the other. We are called to follow the internal compass of a pilgrim, ensuring we create encounters of learning for each young person in our care that move, motivate, beguile, challenge, intrigue and inspire. This is the value of a teacher and our impact.
Each week I witness teachers at Marcellin building connections of the mind and of the heart. I watch as teachers walk alongside the footsteps of each young person’s story. This active presence includes us in their most formative years. And a story where they will find real meaning about their particular details in the connections we make with them.
I am a teacher because I have a passion for life-long learning and an inherent belief in the profoundness of young people. My vocation allows me the opportunity to enter into the lives of young people and assist them in shaping what type of person they aspire to be. By sharing so much of myself I take on the symbolic role of storyteller and sense-maker. Hopefully through my example they gain an insight into their own possibility.
Why? Because I am a teacher.

29 March 2019
Today marks the day that we, Isaiah District of Batch 680, entered the gates of the Philippines Missionary Training Center. It was the start of one of the BEST experience of our lives! We were from different cities as well as foreign missionaries from all over the world gathered together in one special place to train as new missionaries called of God to preach His gospel in every isle of the sea! How great is our calling, how great is our God.
I will FOREVER cherish this opportunity especially the nineteen days that we spent here in the MTC which is just across the Manila Temple. I will never forget the wonderful spiritual moments that has helped me get through the next 16 months of my life in the field.
