Luffy is oh so dumb and stupid and I would trust him with my life. Nothing gets in the way of the Rubber Boy and the hyperfixation he has had since childhood. Not cops (he punches them), not the government (he declared war on them cuz they suck booo), not the most beautiful woman in the world (sorry Boa), not dead siblings (<3), and not even basically dying several times himself. Truly an gluttonous, acab, aroace, neurodivergent icon. I 100% understand why everyone this dumbass comes in contact with is like, "Okay yeah sure. I'll follow you to the ends of the Earth, I guess."

This is sorta spoilers but her presence is a spoiler) Isabel Lovelace is the former captain of the USS Hephaestus from a previous mission, kept secret from our main crew of Commander Minkowski, Comms officer Doug Eiffel, but not Dr Hilbert who was on the previous mission under another name. She is badass, but not as strict as Minkowski, maintaining a somewhat chummy relationship with Doug. Unfortunately she has also had enough of Goddard Futuristics' bullshit and makes Minkowski, Hilbert, and Eiffel work to return the crew to earth under threat of a dead-man's-switch operated bomb going off. She has seen her previous crew murdered by Goddard and will not rest until every executive has their head on a pike. (OK SUPER SPOILERS NOW) she is also very dead. the version of her that appears in the show is revealed to be a doppleganger planted by aliens (known as the dear listeners by doug).

You will never convince me that Isabel Lovelace is not disabled post-canon. Think about it.

Of everyone in the crew, she's spent by far the longest time in space. Sure, she's probably been exercising, but that isn't going to fully stop her muscles atrophying. Her bones are going to weaken. Not to mention the fact that she went into the cryo chamber, which we know isn't GREAT for you (I know Eiffel is kind of an outlier but still. Even once is gonna fuck you up at least a little).

Then add to THAT the fact that the body Lovelace has now was created by the dear listeners. Not only are they recreating a body that's already undergone almost a thousand days of the trauma of space; they're doing it with zero existing knowledge of how a human body functions in Earth's gravity. The clones are almost perfect, but there are notable differences in internal organs, and I wouldn't be surprised if Lovelace was put back together with some inconsistencies.

All this to say, I think Lovelace would become a mobility aid user when the crew lands back on Earth. Everyone on the crew would probably end up in physical therapy, but the damage done to her body would be by far the most extensive. Whereas I don't doubt Jacobi, Minkowski, and Eiffel could regain most if not all of their mobility, I think Lovelace would use a wheelchair, and eventually with PT could use crutches or a cane some days. Even if she were to regain muscle function, she would probably have some sort of chronic pain that would necessitate mobility aids!

Ok I didn’t really like Lovelace when she came in but the Mini Episode: Variations on a Theme made me love her, I adore characters who are grieving their past and their present is exactly like their past but they’re the only one who can see the ghosts in the actions of these new people

If you are currently listening to Wolf 359, I recommend keeping the song The Reckoning by Dom Fera on hand. It's a great song, both sweet and powerful, and features piano heavily enough that it kinda sorta picks up from where the show's scores leaves off, and the lyrics could be made about the characters if you tilt your head and squint.

I thought it was perfect to listen to immediately after the last episode, given its more upbeat tone following the finality of the show. No spoilers about how the show ends of course, just a little advice to shake off the end-of-show blues.

the first time Eiffel hears Lovelace’s voice he doesnt know what he’s hearing. Her voice echoes throughout the station on repeat. It’s her last outgoing message and she has no idea if it’ll even reach anyone. She’s sending it to someone she hopes never hears it. She’s warning of a terrible danger.

the (almost) last time that Lovelace hears Eiffel’s voice she doesn’t know what shes hearing at first. Its muffled through a door. Eiffel is sending his last outgoing message to Earth. He desperately hopes it will be received. He’s reminding the recipient that he loves them.

if I had a nickel for every time the Hephaestus got boarded by another ship and almost the first thing that ship’s commander does is play a game (chess, backgammon, etc) with Isabel Lovelace, I’d have two nickels. which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice, right?
