The Cannes Film Market is gearing up for one of its most unpredictable editions in years, as buyers navigate a landscape shaped by risk aversion, political turbulence (thank you, Mr. Trump), and the lingering aftershocks of a sluggish Berlin. February’s European Film Market was brimming with promising projects, but few big deals materialized, leaving distributors cautious as they head to the Marché du Film, which runs May 13-21.
“The market has become less predictable,” says Simon Williams of Ashland Hill Media Finance, whose sales outfit Palisades Park Pictures is shopping sci-fi actioners Eyes in the Trees with Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, as well as Skyline: Warpath with Scott Adkins and Iko Uwais, at this year’s market. “It’s become so you can’t just rely on one market to launch a project. You take it to Berlin and get a few sales, then Cannes and get a few more; you have to do a lot more work to get the finances in place to get the green light.”
With presales becoming harder to secure and Trump’s 100 percent tariffs on movies “made in foreign lands” adding another layer of uncertainty, the indie film world is bracing for a challenging Cannes as the details of Trump’s plan remain frustratingly sparse. Even for those who are skeptical that any semblance of a plan will actually come to fruition, the worry is that even the threat of tariffs is enough to keep already risk-averse financiers away.
But recent indie triumphs at the Oscars like Anora and The Brutalist, Emilia Pérez and The Substance, Conclave and A Real Pain — half of which debuted at Cannes and crossover commercial successes all — show the opportunity available for those who can make the numbers work.
“It seems like there continues to be, and I hope I don’t eat my words on this, an appetite for high concept, breakthrough, cool ideas and interesting new directors,” says Allison Hironaka, head of film and TV at Caviar, which has Zac Efron and Phoebe Dynevor project Famous in this year’s market. Gonzo films like Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance proved to be winners at the box office, earning nearly $60 million in international ticket sales.
“You can still make these studio-releasable movies for a global, wide audience, and you can build them more easily within in the independent sector,” says Guy Danella, the newly appointed head of production and acquisition at XYZ Films, whose Cannes slate includes The Edge of Normal, the English-language debut of Spanish director Carlota Pereda (Piggy), starring Chloë Grace Moretz. “There’s a real thirst on the talent side, with actors who are available and just holding out for something great. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a massive studio film for them to say yes.”
That’s evidenced by the projects heading to the Marché this year. The Hollywood Reporter’s list of the market’s hottest titles boast impressive above-the-line names like Sydney Sweeney, Jesse Plemons, Gal Gadot, Jeremy Allen White and Angelina Jolie, signing up for indie projects both massive — Lionsgate’s $150 million-plus Hunger Games prequel — and more modest, including Colman Domingo’s directorial debut, and a new Werner Herzog film. How buyers respond on the Croisette will be an indication of the long-term health of a disrupted industry.

Cable Girls / Las Chicas Del Cable
The fact that the ending to the series makes it so that all of the couples are now tragic and non endgame makes me so sad! Whether you shipped Lidia/Francisco, Lidia/Carlos, Marga/Pablo, Marga/Julio, Ángeles/Cuevas, Carlota/Oscar, Carlota/Miguel, or Carlota/James; none of them get to be together and happy in the end, and it just breaks my heart. 💔

Spoilers for Las Chicas del Cable season 5!!!
I love how the civil war is depicted. I thought they would tone it down a bit or protect the main characters, but they absolutely didn't. I was shocked by the violence in the first episode, with each character not being on the same side of the war, with both sides doing atrocities to civilians and soldiers alike.
The main story (Lidia going back to Espagna to find Sofía) is a little weak at first, but it allows a lot of secondary (and more interesting) intrigues to be put into place.
Carlos: there is so much to say about him. I am a Carlos fan since the beginning, I liked Lidia/Carlos more than Lidia/Francisco. After the first episode of season 5, I knew there was no way they would go back together, and I was waiting for a redemption arc, but I still didn't expect his death. It's realistic, he was a spy and he double-crossed his side... but still, I couldn't believe it at first. I don't know how to feel or think about his death yet: knowing the context, it makes sense some people would die. But also, Carlos was really played dirty by Lidia, leaving him behind and basically stealing his daughter away from him. But then, he could have tried to contact his daughter during the seven years, instead of becoming a freaking Franco supporter.
Carlota: what the f*ck are you doing, Carlota??? I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of her being a journalist and wanting to take pictures and information directly on the front, but her behavior with Óscar?? Shitty, really shitty. For once, we have a lgbt couple, with great representation (they're both bi, with Carlota being a ciswoman and Óscar being a transgender man), and they want to fuck it up? This is really shitty, so I hope they won't make them break up in the second part (if they're not already broken up already). Then, James seems like a nice guy and I liked his little talk with Oscár while developing the photos, but I don't want a new and completely out of the blue stupid and useless couple!
Oscár: well, it wasn't a good half of season for him, for sure. I think I felt the most heartbreak for him: the scene with the Franco general in the room was so frightening and humiliating. I think the actress did a great job portraying her inner heartbreak. She's losing Carlota and her identity, and no one seems to notice.
Marga: SHE WAS SO AWESOME!!! Omg, she was so badass when she tried to oppose the Franco soldiers! A little crazy too, but this season really shows how she changed and became even stronger after these three years of conflict. Also, I loved how she was helping selflessly her neighbours and strangers, I think she was the only character to help others without some sort of secondary purpose or goal behing her actions. And her friendship with her boss (I don't remember his name tho) is cute, I'm glad there wasn't any ambiguity between the two, even when Pablo left to go to the front. Very happy Pablito and Julio managed to survive too!! I don't know how they made it back, but I'm glad!
Sofía & co: I quite liked the new team. They were cute, the romance with Felipe was predictable for a mile away, but I also liked Rosero and Marina (I think? the one who was hurt), they're representing the youth fighting for their ideals, even three years after the beginning of the war. And Sofía and Lidia's relationship was very well developed too: I wasn't expecting them to be so close, but I like it. It's a good homage to Angéles I believe: Sofía is her own character and person, she's new enough to be separated from her mother, but she's also similar to her mother in many ways.
The rest: I didn't mind Francisco being almost non present in the first part. He will probably be more present in the second part, and it made more sense story-wise to have him with Eva in New-York. Plus, it let the space to have Lidia and Carlos share a few scenes together before killing him. Same with Eva: she's 7 or 8 years old in 1939, so she wouldn't be easily inserted in a civil war context. Doña Carmen being the head of the camp was like O.o for me, she is so evil it's not even surprising anymore, actually I even laughed a little because WHAT ARE THE ODDS?? I bet she won't even care that her son died. Also, where is Eliza? I liked to see Cuaves too (is it his name? the police inspector), even if it was for a very short time.
That's it for the moment!! Overall, I truly enjoyed this first part of season 5, I was surprised by some events, shocked by others. If we forget about the state of Carlota love life, I don't think there is an element I totally didn't like - and there is still the second part of the season to repair that. The casting is stellar, the old members like the new ones, and I love the Espagna of the 30s, the architecture and the cars and just the vibe is beautiful, it must have been hard and fascinating to design each decor.
Now we just have to wait for the second part, but I guess it won't be on Netflix for another few months...

I’m so confused about Carlota and Oscar’s relationship in season 5, I’m assuming they’re still together but I can’t find any form of romance in their relationship anymore??? Like in season 4 they had multiple kisses and ‘I love yous’ etc and in this season there’s nothing, I get there was a time jump of I don’t know how many years and they moved out of the honeymoon stage a bit but still... If I had never watched this show before and then saw season 5 I never in a million years would have guessed that they are a couple

IMO in the LCDC finale there’s SOME story arc justice for Carlota in that I do think she was always meant to sacrifice her life on the front line (preferably as a Republican soldier) but I just did! not! like! how we got here. The woman who ran for mayor in 1931 wouldn’t have stood aside in the way Carlota did in the later half of the series, even after the trauma of season 4. So there’s a little relief in seeing her arc tied up in the way it should’ve been all along, especially after the total failure of the writers with her plot lines in season 5a. But G-d, at what cost?

las chicas del cable: s5, part 1
thought i was done ranting about this season? well, you were wrong. involves MAJOR SPOILERS (obviously)
• francisco and lidia don’t have the chemistry they used to have in s1. they’re just together for the fan service. fight me.
• the way carlos and lidia still had so much chemistry even after years apart lmaooo
• carlos’ character was completely ruined by the writers in s4 and now even more in s5. aside from lidia he was probably my favorite character in the show and he’s the only person who should end up with lidia.
• if you want to give carlos shit about his character, here’s some of the things he’s been through;
- brother-in-law francisco always being considered as a better man/son by his own father, then having to deal with his death
- growing up with the terrible mother that is carmen
- losing francisco aka his best friend
- losing the love of his life to his former best friend TWICE
- losing his daughter
- the things he said in s5 gave me the feeling that he’s most likely been depressed since lidia left for new york with eva and francisco
- like somebody give that poor boy a hug
• so other than that
• carlota, the fierce, badass and smart woman we knew from previous seasons turned into someone who obeys and stays silent. what the hell?
• francisco would’ve been a better spy than carlos. he’s always been this kind of shady-ish figure in previous seasons, and in my opinion being a spy would just suit francisco better.
• elisa should’ve been in this season!! i don’t know what’s she’s been up to but she needs to save this mess of a season.
• the good thing is that my man julio made an appearance and, since he and pablo are one chaotic duo, delivered some comedic gold.
• marga baby i love you please don’t die
• poor cuevas still being pretty much unable to cope with ángeles’ death
• james and oscar had so much potential to be a powerful duo or couple but NO
• francisco is a character that merely exists because of his on and off relationship with lidia. it’s a bit sad if you ask me.
• sofia’s character is... meh.
• there’s just so many things the characters did this season that just don’t line up with who they are... like making carlos fascist? he helped and supported carlota and oscar and now this? IT JUST DOESN’T MAKE S E N S E
• spanish netflix originals really be ripping out my heart like that huh
• netflix give me my carlos x lidia endgame somehow and i might forgive you
• like just pretend that the bullet somehow didn’t kill him and put him in a coma for two episodes I NEED HIM
• i know this is like 99% impossible but hey miracles happen in soap operas so do it
• oh and by the way, to people who just want to see lidia & francisco as endgame because they were a couple in some shows/movies before;
P A T H E T I C
i’m just gonna pretend that the last episode didn’t happen, goodnight y’all

Modern Women. [A ‘Cable Girls’ Fanfiction]
VERSION EN ESPAÑOL AQUÍ
[Frankie Ruiz never expected her calculations to be correct when it came to her silly dream of creating a time machine. Spoiler alert: they were.
Now stuck in the 1920′s Frankie finds herself frustrated with her lack of rights and goes to desperate measures to get back home.]
“It fucking worked!” Frankie gasped, her little hands clenching and shaking in excitement.
“I can hear them now!” Frankie soliloquized. “And the Nobel Prize goes to-” Frankie air drums, “Frankie Ruiz Miller!’ The crowd would go crazy! The whole world would be in disbelief, I mean, I’m in disbelief! I just fucking made a functional time machine!”
“I just fucking made a functional time machine.”
The gears in Frankie’s head turned. For such a smart person she made an incredibly stupid mistake.
“I made a functional time machine… and used myself as a lab rat… and didn’t really configure it to a specific date or location… and I don’t have a time machine with me right now. I was the first one to create it. It wasn’t portable. The time machine is in 2019 and I’m- Fuck.”
The young adult scanned her surroundings, she’s in the middle of a considerably crowded street. Eyes full of disgust shoot nasty glares at her direction. Judging by the clothes, buildings, cars and angry policemen running towards her she concludes that she’s in the roaring twenties and lots of trouble.
FRANKIE
This is all going so fast, a few seconds ago I was fixing the last screw on my machine and now I’m running away from the police in 1920’s God knows where.
“¡No la dejéis escapar!”
1920’s Spain.
I’m stuck in 1920’s Spain.
I have never been so glad to be Mexican-American AND a good runner.
My knees and ribs hurt; I have no idea how many turns I’ve taken but I look back and see a telephone company, a bar and most importantly, a distinct lack of policemen. My much-needed intake of oxygen is interrupted by another Spanish accent, this time feminine.
“That’s right! Stick it to the man! Women can wear pants in public if we please!”
Looking back I see a blonde in usual 1920’s attire (which I find horrendously adorable) with her arms linked to a slightly older man. He’s handsome but he’s exactly 99 years older than me and oh god- they’re walking towards me. I’m socially awkward plus they’re a really cute couple, shit.
She’s right in front of me and holding her hand out. “My name’s Carlota,”
Nervously, I shook her hand, “and this is Miguel.” I shook his hand.
Carlota continues, “Nice to see a fellow suffragist protesting so openly.”
“Um uh- yes! Of course! It’s a new age, time for the patriarchy to die.” I’m actually a humanist but I’m not here to argue about the gender inequality of the early 1900s.
“Patriarchy?”
Was patriarchy not a word yet…? Shit. Looks like I’m the new inventor of the word.
“Patriarchy is uh… y’know the social system where men hold most, if not, all power politically, in the workplace and in the household.”
Carlota looks at Miguel and they nod at each other, seemingly impressed.
“Absolutely perfect word for the state of the world right now, I’ll add it to my vocabulary.”
“Carlota…” Miguel interrupts, “We’re going to be late for work.”
“It was nice meeting you, uh…?”
“Francis.” Going by fake names seems like a good idea here.
“Well Francis, I work at the Telephone Company, I’m operator 46. I know this really good suffragist meet up if you’re interested.”
I try my hardest to muster up a friendly smile, I’m glad to have an alley. “I’ll make sure to give you a ring.”
And with that, they nodded and walked away. While I watched them enter the building it hit me.
The Telephone Company is my way back home.
