Populations of Metro Areas in the Lanarian Empire

Wow, this was an eye-opening project. It made me think about places that I invented many years ago in a whole new light.

I have a tendency to think of cities as either similar to where I live (~160k), or like the big metro area that I visit most often (~3 million). I've had layovers in Dallas, Chicago, and Atlanta but never left the airports, so I don't have a sense of how big those cities are.

It wouldn't make sense for Kavrillia to have no cities larger than 3 million, though, so I had to stretch my imagination a bit. I knew Binzat was the largest city on the southern continent, and Ozazo the second largest. I knew Jantrala, Carrend, and Vaxton were pretty big, Glindor and Worallo were relatively small, and Valoh was slightly larger than Shalanera. That was pretty much all the thought I'd put into the sizes of the dots on the maps.

The one that gave me the biggest headache was Shalanera, where most of the book(s) take place. I've imagined it as similar to that metro area of ~3 million that I've visited many times, but that seemed small for the capital of a globe-spanning empire.

Then I looked at the size of different real-world countries' capital cities, and found a huge variety of populations. You've got the metro areas for the capitals of Russia, Mexico and Brazil with 21-23 million each. Argentina, France, and the U.K are in the teens of millions. Germany's is 6.2 million, Italy's is 4.3 million, Greece's is 3.1 million, Ireland's is 2.8 million, and Norway's is only 1.5 million. In other words, there is no "normal" population for a capital city.

Thus I decided 3,790,000 was a fair estimate for the Shalanera metropolitan area's population--bigger than the one I'm most familiar with IRL, but not mind-numbingly huge, either.

So I now have a list of the largest cities on Kavrillia--or at least the ones I've thought up so far. I reserve the right to suddenly decide there's a megalopolis somewhere that just conveniently hasn't been mentioned yet. (If WoW can add entire continents to Azeroth every few years, I can make up cities on a whim.) The list is also mostly large cities, with only four below a million. That doesn't mean there aren't a ton of smaller cities, just that only those are relevant enough to be named.
