About Catherine... (CW: Mentions of Death)
The Maitland Family of Lauderdale has a deep history within Scotland and the birth of Catherine was yet another chapter added to that rich history. She was born in the Scottish lowlands in her family's castle during a foggy evening after a cold spring rain. She was the second sibling out of four.
Catherine grew up as a lady, always learning and having a prim and proper lifestyle though there would be times when she'd be a bit troublesome and run around the castle without a care in the world when there were lessons to be had.
Other than her slight mischief as a child, she grew up into being a proper lady with a natural tenacity to match. She was a sweet and generous young woman who knew when to hold her tongue but she also refused to be ignored and could hold her own nicely at court especially when it came to Scottish court politics.
Catherine was beautiful and beloved at court by plenty. She had a lot of suitors, but there was one man who truly held her heart in his hands. They met when she pretended to faint in order to get his attention, for she had been watching him and had developed a crush on him. When she fainted he caught her in his arms. Not long after their fateful meeting, they courted... and not only did she end up marrying him, when he usurped the previous royal family of Scotland and became king, she became his queen.
Before their deaths, her parents proudly supported her as their queen. After their deaths due to a sudden and unforseen disease, her older brother became the new Duke and his betrothed became his wife and the new Duchess. Catherine loved her older brother and she had wished to see his wife, her new sister-in-law, and she even sent a letter back home to Lauderdale inviting her to have tea. Instead of receiving a letter about how it would be an honor to meet the new Queen, Catherine received a letter written by her sister-in-law that snubbed Catherine's invitation. The letter that Catherine had received made it abundantly clear, the new Duke and Duchess of Lauderdale didn't care for Catherine, her husband or the Campbell Family ruling Scotland. It was a slight shock to Catherine's system seeing as that she and her new sister-in-law used to be friends at court when they were younger... but now that friendship was no more. The nastiness between them would only get worse when Catherine's older brother suddenly vanished without a trace, leaving Catherine to become suspicious of her sister-in-law due to how quickly she had named her own son the heir to the dukedom.
Catherine has tried her best to rule Scotland as a whole and not allow one thing or another to take up her valuable time, but sometimes it can be difficult especially since she is so close to her family, namely her two sisters, one of which was quickly married off after their brother's disappearance and the other who is unmarried and visits Catherine often. Catherine however does care about Scotland and does what she can to ease tensions building up within the country... though some of the Scottish are more hostile towards her than others. Lately she's been trying to rehab the royal family's image to the public. She gives food to the poor, makes brief public appearances and has been trying to help the people she rules. While she is very generous, some still can't seem to bend the knee to her... especially not after the disappearance of two of the Campbell princes, which she has very vocally stated that she had nothing to do with, but some dissenting voices say otherwise.
Catherine is not just generous, but she is refined and poised, though sometimes her mask slips and she can show off her more tenacious yet ambitious and gutsy side though she is also stubborn and strict when it comes to keeping up appearances. She's a bit of a perfectionist, everything must be perfect and if it isn't... she'll deal with it herself. She has a strong resolve and though she is patient, her patience tends to wear thin these days and her temper flares up in the form of sharpened words to match her sharpened wit.
The Queen of Scotland is determined to find answers as to why her brother disappeared and why members of her husband's family have disappeared as well. Though she wishes she were back home instead of in Vienna, she thinks that perhaps there could be a silver lining to being in Vienna with monarchs of other countries who have people they cared for who have also vanished. Either way, her tenacious spirit knows no bounds and she won't give up easily.
