Thoughts on the Elsbeth season finale that brought basically everyone/everything back in the manner of a Marvel movie but isn't the Endgame for our heroes
why is this feeling very high school
could he be less like Kelvin-timeline!Khan
Vanessa and Quinn?...
oh he's back
theater getting Elsbeth all hyped
Paula? (and that overt a Chicago reference), perhaps Rachel Bloom as a lawyer in S3?
looks like the usual suspects are getting their Glee on and dragging Elsbeth through the mud more than the Ember Island Players did the Gaang
Kayabeth heartache leaving a ticking clock but that's not her color
Elsbeth finds a Wagner fanboy (potential new cop character?)
so this guy's dead
all the freaking guest stars ever
trying to make nice with the warden
little bit of social commentary are we making again
Wagner's good at surprising people
so he's accusing her of being an innocent bystander?...
Elsbeth's been busy
"try to make friends" easy for him to say
had a feeling Quinn was the one she'd try to connect with first
kinda "review"-ing everything we've been through
Joe being all theatrical
seems like all the women have a reason to call him an ass
Elsbeth getting all the bonding time in all the jobs
some parallels with Kaya I take it
ok weird little animated blip
don't throw Pupetta under the bus
and another little musical reference (24602, one more than Jean Valjean, y'know, the musical hero who famously did the not-legal thing for the right reasons)
Elsbeth dreams in show tunes (her most Abed moment yet) and it'd make sense she's not in this, y'know, Roxie wasn't in Cell Block Tango
that's one way to get their sides of the story (and I can tell which mirrors which Chicago part even though they're out of order)
some of those characters' best lines (esp. my name twinsie with the throw it away bit and Margo taking shots at stereotypes of plus-size women in musical theater)
Teddy with the save and Wagner with the foreshadow?
whoa there officer puppy dog
warden might have figured something out
take a look it's in a book a secret message
Wagner's got the intel and it feels like this is the most ambitious crossover of all time
and we be referencing everybody out here
Elsbeth making her shpiel and some social commentary
keeping up with the trend of Elsbeth bonding with the murderer
chekhov's tote bags
a parallel to the Crawford/Dousant thing?
and the Veev case cracks the case
"you ruined everythiiinnnggg, you stupid bitch" ;)
the party (what's that song) and Kaya's outfit looking like Soto's from the High Potential season finale
Kaya confirming she will be back
Elsbeth saying she loves Kaya while dressed in hearts and then that beautiful speech and then this song and the season ending on "we are not two, we are one" is giving me the most hope I've had since Kaya's promotion for Kaya continuing to appear/Kayabeth making it work

Elsbeth Tascioni from the The Good Wife universe (she originated in TV show The Good Wife, appeared on its spinoff The Good Fight and now leads her own spinoff Elsbeth)
Tumblr media
Ways to approach the poll if the character isn’t a royal:
If you think they’d be from a smaller house, go with the Great House that that smaller house is sworn to (ex: House Manderly —> vote Stark)
They don’t have to be a nobleperson, they can be someone working for the house or being ruled by them. Roles could be a sworn-sword, a septa, a butcher, a blacksmith, or even a lowly peasant.
You can consider the region itself. For example, if you feel the character would be from Dorne, pick House Martell.
You can consider the personality of the character. For example, if your character is all about honor, then consider either House Arryn or House Stark.
Last, but not least, be creative with it! For example, there was a comment I read that the character who was the subject of the poll would be pulling a Littlefinger, so they went with either Lannister or Tyrell as that would be that character’s target houses.

solution someone on Reddit brought up to the whole Kayabeth partner dilemma (as when their relationship has been basically described as the heart of the show by actual people working on the show and Kaya's actress is literally billed right after Elsbeth's in the opening credits they can't just have her leave) that I'm surprised I didn't think of; since Elsbeth has gone far beyond her original observational capacity of the consent decree and given what she's done for them and how well she's done it, why can't girl just get a freaking badge?
This wouldn't necessarily have to mean she'd have to go through all the rigamarole and years of actually "The-Rookie"-ing her way up to being the detective many people at "her" crime scenes have mistaken her for, maybe this is just another case where Kaya and Elsbeth end up paralleling Adam and Morgan from High Potential as Morgan despite being a consultant was able to still get an official-y badge and there was a whole episode about how she's as much his partner as the now-an-FBI-agent guy was. So perhaps since Elsbeth's show seems *crosses fingers* likely to stick to the airwaves for a while and they can't just keep having some notice of the extension of her consent decree every season premiere, perhaps she could just get the kind of permanent consultant-y position (the equivalent of what Morgan has) that I thought she was going to get at the end of S1 when the captain talked about a permanent position for her and truly establish that she's found a new home in New York.

In case anyone ever wants to write a Soulmate AU for Kayabeth I found the perfect variation of it to fit their vibe
The one where whenever you're listening to music, your soulmate hears it stuck in their head. Think about it...

Reminds me of things people need to keep in mind regarding Elsbeth the show and how just because of how this most recent episode ended/Kaya seeming to be in a relationship with a guy suddenly out of nowhere when I thought she didn't like him back that doesn't mean Kaya and Elsbeth couldn't be bi and eventually an item as slow-burn things on these kinds of procedurals take time (though hopefully it wouldn't be a situation like on Bones when Booth and Brennan didn't get together until halfway through the show)and usually at least one love interest before their endgame one and not every episode full of queer yearning and all that has to end with a coming-out, maybe this episode's ending is just one of the many pieces to eventually be put together. Jeez set up what looks like a potential typical-procedural-slowburn-couple otherwise but make it same-sex and suddenly Tumblr forgets how the tropes play out
Hey you know what's super funny about the idea of "good bi rep"?
For a character to be canonically bi you have to make sure and establish that they're attracted to multiple genders. Not all mediums allow you to get inside every character's head or show what they're thinking. Flirting can be read ambiguously, and god forbid they flirt with a character who's not into them and be read as pushy or predatory. So it can be super handy to just mention an ex or two! But you better not mention too many exes because that would make them a slutty bisexual which is (checks notes) bad, and you definitely better be careful about making them poly, because that might make them, uh... greedy. Oh, and those exes? They better be perfectly amiable breakups with no conflict or drama, because it's bad to represent queer people in toxic or abusive relationships (especially queer women! very bad), and you definitely can't have them have lost a partner if the partner was queer because that's "bury your gays..." You should probably also eliminate all trauma from their backstory, just to be safe. You should probably also make sure they're not involved in crime, deception, or anything of the sort, because that would make them "deviant" and a stereotype.
But don't worry! Once you've carefully crafted your nice, monogamous, experienced-but-not-too-experienced Lawful Good bi character, you will be rewarded with your audience deeming them "boring" and quickly passing them over for other characters. :)

Since I thought this most recent Elsbeth episode said Kaya's birthday's April 7th, here's some Kayabeth dollmaker fanart before the day is out in celebration
Tumblr media
indulging my inner Librarians fangirl with a medieval-fantasy AU where they're a seer-in-more-ways-than-one and a newly-dubbed knight
Tumblr media
As best as I can attempt to make gem versions of human characters this is gemsonas of Elsbeth (Carnelian) and Kaya (Onyx) and in the middle is the Kayabeth fusion Indicolite
Tumblr media
and for all those who have a problem with cop shows being cop shows here's a superhero!AU; I haven't thought of super-names for them but powerset-wise Elsbeth's got the "typical Marvel psychic powerset" (a la Professor X, pre-Phoenix-Jean-Grey etc.) and Kaya's basically an earthbender
Tumblr media
this is my attempt at fairy versions of them in their Vivienne Gala dresses from "Elsbeth's Eleven"
Tumblr media
and ending things off with what I hope becomes the "core four" of the show if Kaya and Elsbeth's relationship whatever form it takes can last despite last episode's weirdness while she still can sometimes work with the other two detectives and an elemental!AU based on the elemental correspondences to what I think is their primary one of the four humors.
From left to right you've got Kaya as the world's most toned-down dryad (and yes the pink flower in her hair is because of why you think it is), Edwards channeling her inner Lady-Of-The-Lake in as almost-monochrome as her personality can come off (but still waters still run deep), Donnelly barely looking recognizable because this thing doesn't have any body type diversity, and Elsbeth looking pink and queer af (though she has the angel wings because the fairy wings in this maker looked weird) with way more butterflies in the full pic than the split-screen showed

Someone on the Elsbeth subreddit hating on Kaya for being a flat character kinda made me have an epiphany; Kayabeth basically fit a lot of the tropes you normally see in certain kinds of indie romances with Manic Pixie Dream Girls and stuff so it makes sense that Kaya would be the one perceived as lacking depth because we're seeing this hopefully-eventually-a-love-story from the perspective of Elsbeth, her Manic Pixie Dream Girl who looks more well-rounded/fleshed-out than most because this is her story not the story about someone falling in love with her.

Doing my part to help fix the deficit in Kayabeth fanart with a Star Trek AU (set in the SNW era as I feel like that's the Star Trek with the most similar energy to Elsbeth) featuring a now-canonically-newly-minted-detective as a newly-minted Lieutenant Junior Grade (I hope I got the insignia right) and as best as I could make with the limited civilian clothing options on the Meiker I used to an appropriately funky outfit (though I've seen canon civilian clothing from Star Trek that her canon outfits aren't too far from) for a certain outside-observer-y-consultant-y chick sent over from HQ to the [whatever the starship in this AU would be called, have some ideas but I'm afraid a canon ship already took them] to investigate a supposedly-corrupt captain who turned out to be being framed by his first officer and liking the ship and crew (especially a certain then-ensign assigned to "babysit" her) enough to stick around

And now I'm thinking about Elsbeth Tascioni and how half of the viewers of her new spinoff show have been calling her the female Columbo and her being as much of a Manic Pixie Dream Girl as a protagonist-who-isn't-a-love-interest can be and the connections between the fae and neurodivergence and hmm....
