Haha, alright. I do ship this one, and I do diverge from the uncomplicatedly happy and harmonious fandom interpretation of them, though I wouldn't necessarily describe it as "toxic" (though it probably has the potential to be so, and Hannibal would definitely try to drive a wedge between them).

What made you ship it?

I'm very invested in both the characters individually, and given that their relationship is so sadly underdeveloped, I enjoyed the thought experiment of "why and how do these two work together, exactly?"

2. What are your favorite things about the ship?

I love how it represents completely new horizons for both of them, that neither of them exactly knows how to navigate. Margot, when we meet her, is very guarded and hard-edged, and you can tell there's a protective wall that she's placed around herself, but she also has moments where that slips and she's incredibly vulnerable. I like the idea of her being able to express that more around Alana, and Alana being drawn to that and indulging in her need to protect someone (something she's generally suppressed until now). I like Margot looking up to Alana as someone with a conscience, someone driven by justice rather than pure self-interest (Margot herself has been driven primarily by self-interest as well, though out of a need to survive rather than to dominate). But I also like Margot inheriting some of the ruthless tactics of her family, and Alana being morally torn as a result.

I also like that, despite the fact that I think the voluntary power exchange between them would slant in Alana's favour, Alana is still in actuality dependent on Margot's protection, especially post-canon when they have Hannibal after them. There's an inescapable claustrophobia to that dynamic that I wish came out more in post-canon fic about them.

3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

Hmm. Well, aside from *gestures at the above* the fact that I think they're more textured than the rather generic soft-lesbians-as-a-counter-to-Hannigram treatment that they sometimes get...

I don't think they were strictly a love match at first. I think they were genuinely attracted to each other - very much so - but that getting married so quickly was a tactical decision rather than a personal life choice that they would have necessarily made otherwise. Alana was guaranteed a reward if she carried the Verger baby to term, and the marriage was something Margot offered her as assurance that she would get custody and her share of the money. They do definitely become life partners in every sense of the word, but the dynamics are a bit more complicated and calculated than the "they fell in love immediately" reading, I think.

(It's because of this that they also have an open relationship arrangement that neither of them fully takes advantage of, and it causes considerable friction when one of them actually does.)

Regarding their kid - I also wish the "happy family" reading of them would take into account the very cynical conditions of that child's conception. It's in some ways a parody of the fixation of upper class families on lineage and inheritance, with an heir cynically bred in the manner of the pigs. He was brought into existence solely for money - and in a manner that's premised on the cissexist coercive reinforcement of assigned sex and gender roles, at that. (What would happen if that "legitimate male heir" decided they didn't want to be a boy, is what I'm saying.) I don't doubt that they genuinely love him and try to be good parents to him, but the conditions of his existence are fucked up, and I can't imagine that doesn't impact the family dynamic. And, if push came to shove, I do think they would prioritize each other over him.

Also, I don't think they would be completely morally clean without Hannibal's influence. Jack's arc is in part about how it is impossible to be a truly "good" person while doing the work he does - it requires him to sacrifice people over and over. Being in charge of a meat empire is similar, despite Fuller's talk about wanting them to make the slaugherhouses ethical. I'm reminded of my fic idea that involves Will (along with Chiyoh) discovering that both Margot and Alana have been up to some shady business that they've been trying to cover up.

ooooooh, i never heard of this theory but this actually so interesing?

I think, it could have been a very good plot, Frederick was indeed accused of being the Chesapeake Ripper during the show and of course, he wasn't but what if he actually started killing? Him getting skin of his victims for his own benefit because he is horrified of his own body, not recognizing himself anymore so he needs to get human skin to be able to look at himself ? Pretending he was someone else ?

I'm wondering if he would ignores that dark part of himself, like maybe dissociate himself from his killings ? Would he tells himself it is to serve a good purpose ? But also i'm thinking if he would be like, very subtle in his killings like Hannibal ?

Also, i think it would have been easy for him to act injured since he had issues after almost getting killed, by Abel Gideon. He would be the perfect person to actually drawns people to them, by acting like he was hurt (maybe with his cane?)

I think, it would have been an interesing path to follow, if executed in a good way.

Thanks for sharing your gif-making process! It unlocked something in my brain and now I understand how sharpening works. You're the first person I've seen who colors their gifs before sharpening. Is there a reason for that, or is it a personal preference?

And, recently I changed up my process and have been trying out sharpening first. I'll show an example of the difference it makes. I used the exact same settings for both gifs, but sharpened the top gif before coloring and the bottom after.

So, it does mess with the coloring a bit. Why? I can't say and if I think about it too much I'll probably get more confused than anything.

But with damn near everything creative, experiment and find a process you enjoy. If you find you prefer to sharpen after tweaking the colors, have at it. There's no perfect way to go about this.

Another Merlin Magic Revealed Fic!!

So here's the fun thing about this WIP. I started watching Merlin in 2021, and I only got about halfway through season 2 before I stopped watching it because I accidentally found out how the show ended and to this day I still can't force myself through that emotional turmoil BUT I spent an ungodly amount of time reading Merlin fanfiction and scrolling through character wikis, so I still know a good amount of what happens in the show even though I haven't watched all of it.

All that being said, I started writing a Merthur magic reveal fic back in late 2021, and wrote about a page and a half before I stopped working on it. And I never outlined it so I actually have no idea where this fic was going or if I'll actually finish it.

My best guess to what the premise of the fic was going to be, based on what is written already, is this:

Merlin saved Arthur's life with magic (again) but Arthur caught him this time. Of course there's the whole "Merlin begs for his life and promises to leave Camelot because he's terrified Arthur will hate him forever now not just for having magic but also because they've worked together for almost a decade now and he's been lying the whole time" but Arthur just isn't entirely sure how he feels about it. He tells Merlin not to worry about it, that they'll keep his magic between them and talk more later, and over the course of the fic, Arthur starts asking Merlin to do magic in front of him because he's truly curious about it until, well, Merlin's eyes are so pretty when they're burning gold and the way his lips shape around the incantations are very distracting and woah magic was outlawed but now it's hot????? Cue Arthur having his "wait am I in love with my best friend/manservant" bisexual confusion and literally everyone being like "you didn't know????" And well Arthur was just planning on making Merlin court sorcerer once magic was legalized but maybe they can be co-kings?

And basically I think I was just writing my own version of the popular Merthur fic tropes like "Merlin's magic revealed" and "everyone knows Arthur and Merlin are in love except for Arthur and Merlin"

ok so i might be the worst person to ask this to bc my literal first thought was that hannibal would make an amazing beans with rice (he WOULD like i bet hannibal’s saturday bbq is the talk of the month he probably makes the best farofa i just know it)
