a part of: fuck it i love you au

last saturday’s party had been one for the books. celeste and her roommates, avery, liz and mary, had planned for the party of the semester, maybe even of the academic year. their whole friday and saturday had consisted of decorating, buying and cooling drinks and partyproofing their beloved dorm.

the party itself had been absolutely unforgettable. nearly the whole athletics department had showed up. the women’s teams did usually hang out anyways and the four girls had been going out with the football team for years. after their triumph in the women’s vs men’s match nearly the whole hockey team had also decided to show up and so their dorm had been slightly on the wrong side of crowded with the amount of people.

liz was responsible for the music, she had been teaching herself how to dj for years now. she played sets at all their parties and she’d gotten really good at it. there was loads of dancing and loads of shots and thanks to their teammates the cleanup had been quick and easy.

the unspoken highlight was the beer pong match though. they had set their table up in the middle of the dorm and chosen teams first thing. to absolutely no one’s surprise celeste and avery had played against ethan and mark - dream team against dream team. it didn’t take too long though, they had agreed to play a best of three and celeste and avery had won within two clean games, each time clearing their cups while ethan and mark had more than three left on their side.

which lead to celeste starting her next saturday morning very, very calmly. she’d let herself sleep for a little longer than usual before she’d taken an 8:00 am workout class and then gotten ready with music and a coffee. by 10:30 she’d finished a sketch of a dress that she’d been hung up on for months and was just now starting to hem a pair of jeans for a girl on her team.

she could hear her roommates through the open door, mary woke up deathly hungover and had been living on the couch all morning, intermittently napping and nibbling on a slice of toast. the sizzling pan on the stove was taken care of by avery, who had been wanting to try a new recipe for lunch and currently alternated between stirring the contents of her newest creation and retelling the hottest bits of gossip to her childhood friend who lived in a sorority across campus.

liz was still asleep, she’d once again played her set at a party the day before, slowly but surely making a name for herself on campus. celeste had heard her stumble into their dorm somewhere around 6am and her soft snores still sounded out into their living area.

their plans for today were simple: survive a new avery-smith-recipe and, after afternoon practice, drive to detroit for a bit of shopping and maybe some literal pre-game-drinks, if mary would be back amongst the living by then, before they’d make their way to the red wings game. liz was born and raised in detroit and her dad had been a season ticket holder for years, he frequently organised tickets for the four of them if they asked.

she had felt bad for a second, had seen the men’s hockey instagram account posting snapshots of very tired looking guys this morning when 7 am practice had made them roll out of bed way too early. she was soon reminded of her own hatred against saturday morning practices and had decided that one semester of early wake ups wouldn’t kill ethan, or any of them, surely.

Novie stood watching as Celeste giggled with her friends in the cafeteria.

The sound of their laughter only fuelled the rage and before she knew it, Novie was striding across the room.

“You! You tried to take my brother from me!” Novie snarled, grabbing Celeste by the collar.

“Like you all took mine?” Celeste sneered.

The dam wall burst, and silver energy erupted from Novie, she flicked her hands and Celeste went flying, hitting the far wall with a sickening thump.

My faceclaims for Xander were really easy to come by and, after a bit of consideration, we have James Dean (Rebel Without A Cause) for the 60s, Jason Bateman (Teen Wolf Too) for the 80s, James FGranco (Freaks and Geeks) for the 90s, and Hero Fiennes Tiffin (After) for the present day.

Nicknames: Xander (so much it’s practically his name now), Xandie (ah, yes, the nickname bestowed upon him by the psychopath I used to love writing, Hornet), Alex (only his mom really called him that), Lucky (his close guy friends gave him the nickname after the gangster Lucky Luciano)

Distinguishing features: Stab wound scar on his abdomen and multiple tattoos on his arms - most obvious being a dragon that curls around his left forearm and some barbed wire on his right bicep.

Mannerisms: Constantly fidgets with the ring Juliet gave him - even after the breakup - and he always scans a room as he enters it - something he learned after nearly being shot multiple times.

Health: He smokes despite his lungs being shitty and drinks a lot more than he should

Hobbies: Basketball, hunting, football, singing, though he would never tell a soul about it, and repairing vehicles, particularly motorcycles and his “special project” - a 1934 Ford Fordor Deluxe sedan - more infamously known as the car Bonnie and Clyde were in when they got into their shootout with the cops.

Greatest flaw (in their opinion): Attachments, especially when it comes to Juliet. In Xander’s eyes, his attachments make him weak. His step-father used his love for his siblings against him until the day he moved out of the house and, although deep down, he doesn’t like it, he uses that same tactic against others. He figures that, if he knows what people care about most, he can control and manipulate them to do what he wants. What he doesn’t always remember, however, is that his own weakness is plain as day for anyone who so much as looks at him. 

Best quality (in their opinion): Xander sometimes claims that the best thing about him is his love for Juliet, but if he had to be honest, he would most likely say the way he can alter his personality at the drop of a hat to blend in with the people he’s around.

Biggest fear: Hornet Admitting defeat. Regardless of whether or not he’s down and bleeding with no visible way out of whatever situation he finds himself stuck in, Xander will fight to find a way out, even if it puts himself and those around him in danger. For him, admitting defeat is worse than being shot or stabbed or basically any other outcome. He’s a fighter to the bitter end, even to his own detriment.

when ethan met celly

a part of: fuck it i love you au

if there was any game that they didn’t worry about this season, it was the one happening this friday. which ethan thinks might’ve been their first mistake. every year the umich men’s hockey team plays one game against the women’s. every year they win. sometimes they win higher, as high as 9-0 even. sometimes they win barely. it’s never a question really, though, because “women’s hockey is just slower and less powerful”.

it’s different this year. the girls seem to be dancing around them in their navy blue jerseys, most trailing a braid behind them. they’re faster than most boys, easily dodging anything physical and playing beautiful hockey.

the only thing they’re missing is luck. he stopped counting how many shots were miraculously deflected that every player on the ice had practically seen hit the net already. whenever he’s on the bench, he tries to make sense of the girls’ team, never quite getting the hang of their tactics. everyone seems to play everywhere, offense and defense mixing and changing swiftly around stiff boys in yellow jerseys.

he doesn’t know many girls on the team, they run into each other at practice sometimes and there’s been the rare occasion they’ve been at a party the other team was throwing but except for dylan’s on-off-girlfriend and a few of her friends he doesn’t really know anyone.

the more he watches, the more he wishes their number 18 would play for the men’s team. she centers her line easily, puck never leaving her stick when she doesn’t want it to. he doesn’t think he’s seen her make a single mistake this whole game. and she’s fast. circles around him and precisely picks the puck off of his stick like he’s a toddler skating for the first time.

he’s almost glad when it’s still standing 1-1 nearing the end of the last period. their 18 set dukers ex up with a filthy assist somewhere during second period and all she had to do was hold her stick for it to be a goal. mark’s goal a few minutes later looks like pure luck next to that, and it kind of was. the women’s goalie had it out of the dangerous zone already when he hits it clumsily with nearly not enough power and it just makes the line for it to count.

during the last few seconds of the game, ethan meets number 18 center ice for a faceoff and instantly wishes he never looked at her face.

he doesn’t see the insanely good hockey player. he sees the girl he had under him at a party just about two weeks ago. the girl he hadn’t been able to stop thinking about. maybe the best fuck of his life. scratch that. definitely the best fuck of his life.

her pretty blue eyes are fixed on his already, nothing hinting that she remembers him. he finds a twinkle in them though, a little competitiveness showing behind her stoic facade. he’s suddenly really pissed at himself about not making more of an effort to find her.

she left his bed that morning before he, or any of the boys for that matter, were up. she hadn’t left a single thing, not a note, not anything of hers. he didn’t even know more than her last name, written across the navy of her jersey in their usual maize. and he couldn’t stop thinking about her, maybe that was the worst part of it. he desperately wanted to see her again. searched on instagram, anywhere, but couldn’t find her.

he’s ready for this faceoff though, more ready than for any faceoff in his life, probably. they need this win. he needs to win this. especially against her. he’s played like shit tonight and he wants to show her he’s actually good. that he’s a prospect for a nhl team for a reason.

the puck drops. he sees it fall, is ready to get his stick in there and the puck behind him. she’s faster though. before he can process anything else, she’s moved past him, puck already back on her stick. he can’t tell if their defense just isn’t ready or if she’s that fast but before any of them reach her she’s hit the puck, let it bounce off the side of the goalpost and tumble into the net.

the buzzer signals the end of the game. they lost. he can’t wrap his head around that. the yellow players are like statues, frozen on the ice and soon swamped by a sea of navy blue, girls happily giggling and throwing themselves onto their game-winning-scorer, celebrating under the lights of what was supposed to be their victory.

and then number 18 frees herself from the arms of her team, taking her helmet off and shaking her messy, blonde braid out of it. the smile on her face is blinding as she takes in the arena, the noise. for a second ethan thinks he’d happily lose every game if he could see that smile again.

when the boys walk out of the locker room, moping and brooding after they got their ears talked off with criticism by their coach, they pass by the girls still partying in the hallway. they’ve abandoned their gear, most of them in either shorts and a sports bra or their jerseys. dukers ex (he now thinks she might still be a girlfriend?) skips up to them on socked feet, grinning at them with so much enthusiasm and genuine happiness, ethan’s almost happy for the girls. after all, the boys not only lost for the first time ever but the girls have won for the first time ever.

“we’re partying at celly’s tomorrow, you’re all invited. we’d really like for you to show.” the hallway goes quiet when the girls slowly but surely notice the boys and turn their music down. it feels like an olive branch, women and men’s hockey teams at umich never really were anything more than acquaintances.

“oh, come on” another girl yells at the back. “you can’t pass up a party anyway. besides, if our number 18, our match-winning-scorer, our very own celeste st. james throws a rager, you’re missing out if you’re not going.”

the blonde grins from her spot between the girls, completely swamped by her jersey now that she’s not wearing gear underneath, long legs bare except for white tennis socks. he can’t stop his brain from imagining what she’d look like in a maize jersey with his 73 and last name on her back and nothing else.

there’s a challenging look in her eyes when they meet ethan’s. “beer pong. you pick a team, we pick a team. winner gets to choose practice times for a month. then we have a rematch monthly until the end of the season.”

ethan’s confused. why would they want to change practice times? the boys around him don’t look like they know either. except for duker. “you just want to not have saturday morning practices anymore so you can take people home” he grins at the girl.

“and if i do?” she challenges again, briefly meeting ethan’s eyes, which widen in understanding. before he can think about it, he already hears “you’re on” come out of his own mouth. she giggles at him, the other girls around her squealing and whooping and turning their music back up to continue celebrating.

Iconic Mont Saint-Michel Abbey celebrates 1,000 years

It was exactly a millennium ago that the first stone of the abbey church of Mont Saint-Michel in French Normandy was laid.

The monument that the poet Victor Hugo called the “Khéops of the West” has since become one of the highest symbols of French Catholic identity and one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the world, with more than 3 million visitors a year.

This important anniversary will give rise to a number of celebrations that will continue through the fall of 2023.

Standing on relatively inhospitable terrain, enthroned on a rocky islet less than a kilometer in diameter, surrounded by a vast sandy plain subject to the vagaries of the tides, the UNESCO World Heritage Site has stood the test of time, offering itself as a spectacle for dozens of generations to see.

Indeed, the history of this place of prayer and pilgrimage was as precarious and tumultuous as its surroundings.

While the construction of the present abbey church dates back to 1023, a first church dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel is said to have been built as early as 708 on the mount, then known as Mont-Tombe.

According to “Revelation,” the oldest text reporting the context of the abbey’s construction (written around the beginning of the 11th century), St. Aubert, then-bishop of Avranches, was visited three times in a dream by the archangel, who instructed him to erect a sanctuary in his honor on the summit of the site “so that he whose venerable commemoration was celebrated at Mont Gargan [the first great shrine dedicated to the Leader of the Celest Army, in the Puglia region of Italy] might be celebrated with no less fervor in the middle of the sea.”

St. Aubert undertook the building of a first church with the capacity of about a hundred people, consecrated in October 709 and given the name Mont-Saint-Michel-au-péril-de-la-Mer.

The prelate installed 12 canons there, responsible for praying the Divine Office and welcoming local pilgrims.

The canons were replaced in the 10th century by Benedictine monks at the behest of Richard I, Duke of Normandy, who had little taste for the canons’ opulent lifestyle.

In 1023, the order undertook the construction of the abbey church we know today, based on three rock-cut crypts and the former chapel.

This ambitious project marked a decisive step in the international outreach of the site, where miracles abounded as the flow of pilgrims from all over Christendom expanded.

“This edifice is like Noah’s ark laid over the crypts,” said François Saint-James, a guide and lecturer at Mont Saint-Michel, in an interview with Le Devoir newspaper, underlining the architectural prowess required for this medieval project.

“It was a time when France was covered with a white cloak of churches, as a monk from Cluny once wrote. You have to imagine the gigantic scale of the work.

The granite blocks were cut on the Chausey islands, 34 kilometers from here.

Caen stone, a soft, light stone that’s easy to carve, was used. ... When, in the midst of the Hundred Years’ War, the Romanesque choir collapsed, it was rebuilt in flamboyant Gothic style.”

While the abbey’s architectural evolution continued uninterrupted until the 19th century, one of its highest points was the construction of “La Merveille” (The Wonder) in the 13th century, a jewel of Norman Gothic art.

It consists of two buildings on three levels, supported by high buttresses, with a cloister and refectory, 80 meters above sea level, beneath which were built an almshouse, a storeroom, and guest rooms.

The fame of the shrine started to decline in the 17th century, when part of the abbey was turned into a prison by the royal power.

Seized by central government during the revolution, it became a detention center for priests deemed hostile to the Jacobin terror.

In the 19th century, the site, listed as a historic monument in 1874, was gradually returned to monastic life and its original vocation as a sanctuary.

The abbey’s distinctive silhouette was further enhanced by a neo-Gothic spire in 1897, topped by a gilded statue of the archangel.

To mark its 1,000th anniversary, a special tribute is being paid to the abbey that many have dubbed the “Wonder of the West” with the exhibition “La Demeure de l’Archange” (The Archangel’s Abode), retracing its glorious and tumultuous history through some 30 masterpieces, until November 5.

Many of these items, which include sculptures, scale models, statues, and silverware, will be on display to visitors to the abbey for the first time.

Another highlight of the many celebrations taking place over the summer and part of the autumn will be the “Millennium Solstice,” a never-before-seen light show projected onto Mont Saint-Michel from various spots in the bay on the evening of June 23.

The beauty of this sacred site, trodden by millions of pilgrims over the centuries, has been celebrated and immortalized in the writings of many great men of letters over the last few centuries, from Gustave Flaubert to Théophile Gautier and Victor Hugo.

In particular, it inspired the novel “Les Merveilles du Mont Saint-Michel” (1879) by the prolific writer Paul Féval.

He had already paid tribute to the monument a few years earlier, in “La Fée des grèves,” with these lines often quoted by admirers of the famous Mont:

“Twilight broke. Mont-Saint-Michel was the first to emerge from the shadows, offering the golden wings of its archangel to the reflections of the dawning dawn; then the sides of Normandy and Brittany lit up in turn.

Then again, a sort of light steam seemed to rise from the receding sea, and all was veiled except for the statue of Saint Michael, which dominated this wide ocean of mist.”
