Elio’s potential box office failure and excuses about how “well the art style looks bad” pisses me off because I need to say this:

As an artist:

ART STYLE

DOESN’T

FUCKING

MATTER

The story will always be important. You can make Prince of Egypt levels of animation, but if the story is shit, your animation skills WILL NOT be enough to save you. We live in a time where the HOODWINKED DUOLOGY EXISTS, and it’s the biggest example of art style doesn’t matter.

First movie: ugly art but funny storyline

Second movie: Nicer art but boring storyline

I’ve had yet to hear people talk about Elio’s storyline, but I’ve heard PLENTY of bellyaching about the art style, and if it’s not that, it’s nonsense about “go woke go broke”, it’s bitching about the music not being good enough, it’s bitching about the main character (bonus points: said main character is a minority, disabled, or a woman, that GREATLY upsets the animation crowd), it’s bitching and bellyaching over EVERY SINGLE FUCKING THING IMAGINABLE as to why the movie just isn’t GOOD ENOUGH for your high tastes.

After the shit you people pulled with the low reviews on Elemental and Wish and the high praises for the new How to Train Your Dragon live action movie; DON’T YOU FUCKING LIE TO ME AND CLAIM THAT YOU WANT ORIGINAL CONTENT.

DO NOT PUT US ARTISTS AND OUR ORIGINAL WORKS AT RISK BECAUSE YOU CAN’T SIT THROUGH A MOVIE AND YOU NEED SOME FORM OF JINGLING KEYS TO ENTERTAIN YOU, AND ESPECIALLY DON’T CLAIM TO BE AGAINST LIVE ACTION REMAKES BUT SWITCH UP WHEN YOUR FAVORITE COMPANY IS DOING IT.

Watch, the Spiderverse style of animation is gonna get popular and you guys are gonna shit on it the same way you do with “Cal-Arts”, because THIS IS WHAT YOU ALWAYS DO.

Furthermore:

DREAMWORKS AND DISNEY BOTH SUCK CORPORATION-WISE. TRYING TO SIGN YOUR ALLEGIANCE FOR WHICHEVER COMPANY THAT’D BE WILLING TO BULLDOZE YOUR HOUSE TO MAKE WAY FOR THEIR THEME PARKS IS LIKE BEING A SNAIL IN FAVOR OF SALT.

Artists (animators, voice actors, writers, musicians, singers, all of the like) don’t get paid enough to deal with both their CEOs breathing down their back and itching to make their works into tax write-offs and the terminally squirrel-brain’d.

Anyways TLDR: Genuinely support animation. Make your love for content clear, buy merch, support the artists on things like Ko-fi or Patreon, raise the numbers on streaming platforms so companies know this is what you wanna see, take the money that would’ve gone to yet another sequel or remake and give it to something new or out of your comfort zone, keep fandoms for shows or movies alive.
