okay so i LOVE rent. i love it, it introduced me to the broadway community and i was lucky enough to see it at the nederlander in 06. i know this show backwards and forwards. it’s far from a perfect show, but it means a heck of a lot to me. now, fox - a major broadcast network, duh - is like, “oh hey let’s make this a live musical event!” and everyone’s like YEAH RENT! i mean, same, but also rent is going to turn into a kidz bop version of itself and i am not here for that. because what advertiser is going to buy into this time slot if the original lyrics to “la vie boheme” are kept intact? my whole thing about this is not that i don’t like rent; it’s that i really don’t see the point in doing this when the majority of the piece will be heavily changed. who wants to see that? who wants to see rent: light? i know there’s the high school versions out there, but like, those are probably closer to whatever fox is gonna have to do to make it air on prime time.
unpopular opinion: fox doing rent as an upcoming live musical is a pretty awful idea
