Austen had no idea why this bothered her so much. She had no claim over Eliana, and the girl barely tolerated her, so there was no reason for her to feel green around the gills when she had watched a girl skip up behind Eliana and lean over her playfully. Neither of them had noticed her, though of no fault of their own. Austen had quickly cloaked herself, tapping into the energy that always sat heavy in her stomach. She honestly wasn’t sure why she stayed, watching like a creep, but it had left a sour feeling in her gut for days.

So when she ran into the girl again, just outside of one of her classes, she trailed her for a minute (silently wondering if maybe she was going to see Eliana again) but she had been so embroiled in her jealousy that she failed to see that Maya had stopped, and she nearly tripped over her.
