The goal is to be more athletic. Skater plyo lunges are a great exercise to be more explosive while roasting your legs and improving your power. Great as a finisher on your leg days to really finish off your glutes, hamstrings quads and calves or just an extremely efficient exercise you can use as in a superset because it combines strength, endurance, anaerobic cardio, mobility balance, coordination and power. Here is an example of the types of exercises I am having some of our clients work on. High level? Yes. Athletic? Of course. Obviously it depends on our clients diagnoses and comorbidities, but I am starting to lean on working with people to not be division 1 athletes but to build their athleticism. Athleticism is very important because it incorporates all types of important facets of movement including strength, endurance, balance, stability, etc. (All the stuff I preach in our holistic training programs). Maybe we are not using such a high step with clients as seen here, but we do need to incorporate sudden stop and go exercises, agility, coordination, stability and balance training to train the body to avoid all the dangerous components that lead to falls later in life. The more athletic we are and train our bodies (safely, of course), the more we reduce fall risk, reduce reaction time, build strength, etc as we age. We may not train to be professional athletes but let's work on increasing our athleticism so we can build longevity in our physical beings.
