For those who want more of a challenge, use a small band around your thighs to work more hip abductors/pelvic stabilizers. Channeling my ex-soccer player agility on this one, be more athletic, step outside the box and challenge yourselves. Here is an example of the types of exercises I am having some of our clients work on. High level? Yes. Athletic? Of course. Obviously it depends on our clients diagnoses and comorbidities, but I am starting to lean on working with people to not be division 1 athletes but to build their athleticism. Athleticism is very important because it incorporates all types of important facets of movement including strength, endurance, balance, stability, etc. (All the stuff I preach in our holistic training programs). Maybe we are not using such a high step with clients as seen here, but we do need to incorporate sudden stop and go exercises, agility, coordination, stability and balance training to train the body to avoid all the dangerous components that lead to falls later in life. The more athletic we are and train our bodies (safely, of course), the more we reduce fall risk, reduce reaction time, build strength, etc as we age. We may not train to be professional athletes but let's work on increasing our athleticism so we can build longevity in our physical beings.
