(also) thinking about attaway general and my nostalgia for skins. a few years ago, i remember everyone making fun of tiktokers because people like addison and charli became famous overnight for no particular reason. i really liked videos like that, i think because i was a stan in denial. i only heard "obsessed" through a video making fun of tiktoker songs, a song that i immediately liked and went to listen to right after the video was over.

back to my point, i saw a video of someone reacting to attaway general (specifically nick diramio's video). i wound up watching a little bit of the actual show afterwards. the score reminds me so much of skins. that made me want to like it (i didn't, because it was poorly written and acted). dixie's character had the potential to be the effy of attaway with her toying with the guy she likes for no real reason. i like that they're all in a scenario where they're forced to spend time with each other. high school in media was kind of sold as this place with tons of potential to meet someone who could change your life (it wasn't). tv shows set in school don't really hit the same anymore. i can't remember the last time i watched a tv show set in high school other then euphoria, which is more like a soap opera or a thriller than a teen drama rooted vaguely in realism.

Using the Vertex Persona Chart as a Relocation Chart

In a birth chart, the vertex is a point in the chart that represents fated situations and encounters. Basically, there's no way around it, whether it's a good or bad encounter. No matter what path you are on, you will end up in that situation or meeting that certain someone. I apologize if this sounds scary. This is a very sensitive point and moves fast in a birth chart, so you need your accurate birth time to calculate yours.

Persona charts offer deeper looks into the placements in our birth charts, to get a better understanding of other placements besides the sun. In persona charts, the point or planet is the star and everything else is revolving around it. A vertex persona chart can show you a deeper look of what's fated to occur in your life.

I saw an astrology post on here from a while ago about how you can use your vertex persona chart as a relocation chart and astrocartography chart to see what you are meant to experience in certain locations. Unfortunately, I lost the damn post, but the credit for this idea goes to them. I will tag them when I find it again.

But the idea makes a lot of sense. When I look at mine, I can now see why I was drawn to certain places, why I struggle a bit in my current location, why I have a lot of friends from certain locations, etc.

But first, let me teach you how to generate your vertex persona chart as a birth chart to get your relocation chart and astrocartography chart.

A Few Examples

Venus in the 1st House - This location will attract beauty, love, and admiration into your environment. You will embody Venusian qualities more strongly when you move here. And it's this whole thing that reader tries to play off, but she knows it's not gonna work because he clearly already knows.

Y/n was grateful to be able to live at home as she started college. Her relationship with her brother, Matt, was not the cliche arguing/fighting siblings you saw in everyday life. They got along almost perfectly barring the teasing fits and fake fighting. They saw eye-to-eye and loved each other. They were all they had. Matt missed his father, and Y/n did wish she would’ve been able to know her parents, but they both loved what they did have.

One thing Y/n was not particularly grateful for were Matt’s heightened senses. They were useful for the greater good and safety of Hell’s Kitchen, but sometimes made it difficult for Y/n at home. She could live with not being able to sneak up on or scare Matt, but she didn’t like that she could never lie to him. Every once and awhile she was able to slip little white lies by him, but nothing major got past Matt.

Except for one thing.

Y/n was a vigilante like her brother. To her credit, knowing Matt’s vigilante secret and what his senses were like, she was able to know how to outsmart them.

She had started taking martial arts classes before doing vigilante work. Matt, at first, was opposed but Y/n being athletically inclined and wanting to be able to defend herself when Matt wasn’t around won out. So coming home with bruises? Karate. Smell of copper in the air? Karate got rough today.

Y/n had been attending college now as well and did take her studies seriously as being a vigilante didn’t exactly pay well. So being out late? Studying with friends or staying the night at their place.

Y/n had practiced these lies on the regular in order to normalize them around Matt and keep her heartbeat from rising in nerves. She had also been used to his routines and regularly avoided going out on nights he went out. Or if they were out at the same time, she made a point to avoid the areas and routes he usually took. And she also made it a point to avoid getting a reputation and/or being put in the papers so he didn’t seek her out. And it all went pretty well.

For a while anyway.

“Y/n? I’m heading out - call me if you need anything, ok?” Matt called.

“Ok. Be safe! Love you!” his sister called back from her room.

“Love you too!”

Y/n waited until she heard Matt leave through his bedroom window and snuck over to her own to listen to him go down their fire escape. When she heard him get to the ground, she started changing into her own vigilante outfit. She wouldn’t go out right away, but she wanted to be ready. She started a timer on her phone for 10 minutes to be sure Matt was far away enough so she could leave without being noticed.

She plopped onto her bed and picked up her phone when it buzzed.

Peter: Going out tonight, hero? (:

Y/n chuckled and rolled her eyes.

Y/n: Yes. Just waiting for Matt to be further away.

Peter: Is he usually out tonight?

Y/n: No, but I think he’s chasing a lead.

Peter: Not the same one as you I hope?

Y/n: Doubt it. He has bigger fish to fry.

Y/n knew what Peter was talking about though. Usually, Y/n didn’t get involved in big time crimes; she knew she wasn’t the biggest, oldest, or most experienced person out there and she accepted that and tried to stay within her boundaries. But this was an exception.

Peter: Ok. Just be careful

Y/n smiled. 

Y/n: I will.

Peter: Text me when you’re safe and sound?

Y/n: Will do. Love you.

Peter: Love you more ;)

Y/n’s phone timer went off and she grinned. She sent Matt a text for him to see when he got home: MJ needs help with a project, gonna stay the night at her place. Text me when you get home. See you tomorrow <3

Putting her phone on silent mode, she stuck it in her backpack and pulled her mask up over the bottom half of her face. She left through the front door, making sure no one was in the hallway to see her, and left the apartment building. She passed her college on the way to her intended point that night to drop her backpack off - when she was done for the night she planned on sneaking into her friend’s dorm and sleeping there till morning when they had to go to class. 

She knocked on her window and left her backpack on the ledge, knowing she would grab it for her. She held a thumbs up to her before taking off.

Y/n headed towards the shipyard where she heard of trafficking activity going on. A bit cliché in her opinion but she supposed there was a reason it was a cliché. This was her first exception to staying away from bigger crimes. She had such good intel and had already taken care of some people who were part of its network before she realized who they were. She felt she had what it took to see it through to the end. 

When she arrived, she snuck through the various shipping containers that littered the yard, staying silent and out of sight. 

Or so she thought.

Matt was crouched on the ground near the corner of a shipping container further away, keeping tabs on the heartbeats around him. The ones of the 5 men present, and the 4 girls they had captive. He waited patiently for the right time to strike. After a couple minutes, a new heartbeat reached his ears. He perked up, tilting his head a bit, and listened. Slightly faster heartbeat, younger person, about 30 feet away from him and the targets…footsteps very quiet, approaching slowly. They weren’t with the men. Was it another vigilante he didn’t know about? Rookie cop? Matt didn’t think anyone else knew about this new trafficking ring yet.

Thinking it was someone that may not know what they were getting into, Matt followed the sound of the heartbeat but before he could reach them, they rolled forward into the next alley between containers and threw a knife into the closest man, sending him falling to the ground, putting all the others at high alert.

Matt cursed under his breath and ran in, pulling his clubs out and throwing one at the nearest person to him to knock his gun out of his hands, then started a fight with the next. The new presence came in to fight one of the men, truly holding their own. He knocked one man out in time for the first person to get back up and start throwing punches. The other supposed vigilante took their first adversary out, soon followed by the second. The one Matt was currently fighting took Matt’s second of attention on the other and fired a shot, hitting them in the arm. A somewhat familiar shout rang out and Matt finished the man off before walking towards his unexpected helper. When they saw him, their eyes widened and they took off.

“Hey, wait!” Matt called. He chased after them, not yet knowing it was his sister he was running after. 

Y/n bit her already bleeding lip to keep from letting out cries of pain from the gunshot wound; the pain getting worse from her running. She would admit she didn’t think there would be as many men as there were. And she definitely didn't expect Matt to show up. They were outside Hell’s Kitchen. Her thoughts were interrupted when her non-injured arm was grabbed and she was pulled into an alley and pushed up against the wall.

“Who are you?!” Matt said. Heavy breaths coming through fabric, she was wearing a mask that covered the bottom half of her face. When she didn’t say anything, Matt ripped the mask down and yelled, “Answer me!” 

Y/n mentally cursed herself for the flinch she gave when Matt yelled. She wasn’t used to him yelling at her. She knew he didn’t realize it was her at this point but still. Hearing it coming from him shocked her. 

Matt noticed this and tilted his head. Heart pounding, heavy breaths being shortened to try and control them. They were hiding something. She. Matt had a suspicion. But he was praying he was wrong. 

“Say something,” he whispered.

Y/n closed her eyes to push back the sting she started to feel, shaking her head.

Matt raised a shaking hand to her face. Y/n stood still, focusing on controlling her breathing as he gently felt her.

“Y/n…” It was more of a statement than a question from Matt.

The girl may have been able to keep her heart calm when she prepared herself to lie; but being caught by surprise like this impeded her ability to do that this time. And she knew Matt could tell because her heart felt like it was about to beat out of her chest.

Right now, Y/n wished she had the senses her brother did because she couldn’t get a read on him.

Matt, on the inside, was going through a reel of different emotions. Shock, anger, confusion, guilt, worry…worry. He honed his senses when he remembered the gunshot. Heavy taste of copper in the air, heat radiating to his hand when he hovered it over her arm. He flared his nostrils and twitched his neck. His face grimaced as he held back the urge to bare his teeth. Pushing through his inner turmoil, he pulled his phone out and dialed a number, one hand keeping his sister put against the wall.

“Hey Claire…I know you said you wouldn’t patch me up again but it’s not me this time…yeah…we’re heading back to the apartment now so we’ll meet you there…thank you.” Matt hung up and put his phone away. He grabbed Y/n’s uninjured arm and pulled her along through the alleys to go home. Silence settled like an elephant in the room and affected them both in different ways.

And Y/n knew she was screwed.

Y/n laid on the sofa on her back as Claire worked on her arm. She was able to get a hold of a local anesthetic so Y/n didn’t feel any pain. The girl lay there with her eyes closed and a frown on her face, a few tears escaping down her cheeks. 

Claire focused on her work, aware that Matt’s furious presence on the other side of the room was the cause of Y/n’s emotions. Claire dared not say anything; only give the girl reassuring looks when she opened her eyes.

When Claire finished, she squeezed Y/n’s good shoulder and got her supplies together. She nodded to Matt and told him to let her know if Y/n needed anything or if the injury got worse. Matt quietly thanked her. 

“Go easy on her,” Claire said quietly, knowing the girl was in for it. When Matt kept his blind gaze forward, Claire sighed and left.

Y/n listened as the ER nurse walked out and shut the door behind her, keeping her eyes closed the whole time. She listened as Matt stayed in the same spot, controlled breaths going in and out. She could practically hear him thinking. Stewing in anger. A couple more tears leaked from under her eyelids before she spoke. “Just get it over with…Please.”

Matt, who stood in inner turmoil, sighed and put his hands on his hips. “I don’t even know where to start to be honest,” he said, tone steady…for now. He took a deep breath and turned his head in her direction. “Do you want me to talk about how reckless that was? Or we could start with how you’ve been lying to me for G-d knows how long! And going around doing things you can’t handle! Things I never wanted you to get involved with!! Or how about how you could’ve been killed?!”

Y/n, at this point, was lightly sobbing on the couch, covering her face with her hand. She knew if Matt ever found out about her vigilante activities he would be angry. But it still hit her hard. And in the moment she couldn’t get past the feelings of shame for lying to her brother; and being a disappointment for going against his wishes. Her motives for those things wouldn’t surface when he was yelling at her. She could only feel her negative emotions.

“Say something!” Matt repeated himself from earlier in the night, making Y/n flinch again. “I mean, what the hell were you thinking?!”

Y/n took a breath and stood from the couch to face him. She calmed her crying and tried standing her ground a bit. “What do you want me to say, Matt?” she said calmly. “I know nothing I say is going to be a good enough reason.”

“And you think being smart is gonna be better?” he shot back, raising his brow.

Y/n bit her lip and looked at the ceiling before looking back at Matt. “I know it was reckless. I didn’t think it was going to be so involved. I never usually even get into things this big. But I had come across other people that were part of that ring of traffickers and I thought I could do it.

“And I’m sorry for lying to you. I just knew you wouldn’t let me do what I’ve been doing if I had told you. Ever since I-...” Y/n paused to collect herself, trying not to cry again. “Ever since the…situation…I’ve felt powerless, Matt,” she admitted, tears springing to her eyes without permission. “When I started taking self-defense classes and other martial arts, I felt better about my own protection. But I had an experience similar to the one that birthed the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. The thing that made you Daredevil is everywhere, Matt. And just like you, I couldn’t let it go. But in my case I stopped it before it happened…And I felt like I got some of my control back. And I saved someone in the process. I won’t be victimized again,” she said, voice gravelly with unshed tears. “And I won’t let someone else go through it if I can help it.”

Matt sighed and turned his face towards the ground. His overwhelming anger slowly dissipated as his sister talked. He knew the ‘situation’ she was referring to and understood the powerlessness she mentioned. He felt it too. How he wasn’t able to be there and save his innocent sister from something so terrible. He understood the need to try and get power back, to try and save others from the same thing. And he hated that he understood. Part of him wanted to keep the anger he felt so he could find a way to stop her. But he realized that maybe his anger wasn’t at her for doing this, but partly at himself for not noticing. And partly for the parental-like instinct to be upset when she was hurt, like tonight. His thoughts were interrupted when Y/n continued.

“You can try but you can’t stop me…I’m not a little girl anymore.” She paused to wipe a couple tears from her face “I don’t need your approval…but it’d be nice if I had it,” she said quieter. “I can do this, Matt.”

Matt listened to her growing sniffles, her tears hitting the ground. He sighed, walked up, and pulled her into a hug that she returned. “I know you can…And I don’t like fighting with you, Starling. I just worry about you too much…You’re everything I have. I can’t stand the thought of something happening to you or losing you.”

Y/n sniffled a bit and moved to rest her forehead up against Matt’s shoulder so she could speak. “How do you think I feel, Matt? I love what you do for others and don’t want you to stop. But I’m terrified every time you go out that you won’t come back. You’re everything I have too. But it’s just something I have to live with. And I’m happy to do it because I know you make a difference…just like I can.” Y/n pulled away to look directly at her brother. “Can you please find it in your heart to do the same for me? Please, Matty,” she whispered. 

Matt’s unseeing eyes were level with hers as he raised a hand to push some stray hair behind her ear, Y/n unable to stop herself from leaning into his touch. He smiled a bit and ran a thumb over her cheek to wipe some of her tears away. “I can try,” he said honestly. “But we need to have a deeper talk about this whole thing. Not to yell at you or argue. But to talk about ways to keep you safer…I don’t want to keep you from doing something you feel called to do, but there are ways to do it that don’t end with you being in a firefight. We can unravel these things while your arm is healing. Deal?”

Y/n smiled and flung her uninjured arm around his shoulders. “Deal,” she whispered. “I love you, Matty. And I’m sorry for lying to you.”

Matt sighed as he hugged her again. “I forgive you. I’m sorry for yelling. I just worry about you. And I hate seeing you hurt. But I was ignorant in thinking I was the only one that felt that way. I think we can both work to do better. Together.”

Alrighty so heres some theories I cooked up:

-So at the start of the game, during the fight between Oracle and Chronos, the game mentioned how Chronie pretty much evaded all of their attacks, as if he can predict our moves.

MC did mentioned this during their discussion about their fight with Mama Oracle, speculating that this might be his power, time travel. He can jump back the the past from the future, and know what they're up to.

However, Mama Oracle brushed this off, saying how it doesn't align with Chronie's motive (or what they thought it would be) of chaos and destruction.

But, as far as we can see, aside from killing a guy who almost roofied us and causing their Jackass of a colleague (pun intended) to get in a major accident, Chronie didn't really do anything else that can cause mass deaths and destruction. He did pull off a bomb threat, but that's it, that at worst can just cause disorder, some citizen screaming and crying, police wasting their resources and time.

You mentioned that the government do pay us, so they do need at least a list of superheroes or some kind of system to send paycheck and dispatches call whenever a supervillain goes twerking in public

Which means that there's a chance of Superheroes on that list might find the information of their "coworkers", or maybe even trust eachother enough to reveal themselves.

So what are the chances that in that future that Chronie/Nik came back from, MC and he were a famous superhero duo who fight crime and make evil cower? However, during one particular fight, MC got injured so badly and unfortunately passed away? That would definitely be devastating for him.

But, as stated in the game, due to the nature of their superhero work, MC needed to pushes everyone away and thus have no friends. The govt also undervalue superheroes, so when Oracle died they were just "Meh... unfortunate, but anyways" and did not care at all. The press, well, they're just there for the gossip and the drama, so of course when Ori pass away they would probably use the deceased hero's death to gain clout.

While MC's funeral were fortunately not interrupted, there were only Nik and Mama Oracle to mourn them. And that's when he saw it, how ungrateful the people are to them. How undeserving the people are of MC's sacrifice. Something inside him snapped.

So he travelled in back in time, determined to change the future.

=> While he did love our aspect of being responsible and looking out for everyone and everything, he's also not afraid of stopping MC from doing heroic works if that means it can keep them safe. However, whenever he fights MC and see how determined they are to bring justice and all that jazz, he get reminded of his hero days with them and he likes it a lot so he wants to keep fighting them to see them all feisty and stuff.

I think that Nik would know very well that he will NEVER be able to convince MC to drop the hero work, no matter how he tried. Not that early, at least.

But! Being a villain means that he can get a persona with a stinky reputation. One that civilians hates but fellow villains adore. Which means that he can find out Ori's would-be killer from his network of criminals and stop history from repeating itself. You mentioned how our civilian identity would be leaked to another important character in p2, so could it be that this character is our killer?

Tl;dr: theory: Nik has time travel power, was Ori's partner in fighting crime, but went back in time after our unfortunate demise. Bro's main quest is to stop our death, and side quest is to romance us.

Man this was so fun to read 😭 I’m sorry I didn’t do this you really need to write a story of your own though cause I was HOOKED. I do feel like my explanation is exciting, but this would have made a lot of sense too!

Josiah's villain persona is Replica (it used to be Reflection for the longest time and I've only changed it quite recently, actually).

His suit has the mysterious look and I've leaned into the mirrored helmet for how he approaches building up his reputation: alongside the mirrored helmet, he also employs programmable voice distorters which can copy the voice of his opponents. In fights, he will often imitate the style and tactics of whoever he's fighting - so with Argent, he will be more aggresive and in-the-moment; with Steel, more cautious and working with his environment; with Ortega, he'll be chatty and try to distract.

All of that works both to conceal his actual abilities and thus true identity, as well as leans into the theme of 'being your own worst enemy' - he's the fear path anarchist. By studying his opponents (be they heroes or the establishment), he can exploit their worst flaws and make them work against themselves. Herald cares so much about civilians? Let's threaten the bystanders to get him to let his guard down. The government is a web of corruption mutually held hostage? Strike at the weakest link, and let them turn on each other. Show the world exactly why the current status quo is not working, show how it is built on fear, greed, and complacency.

There is a personal touch to his persona as well, of course there is. Your typical Regene anxieties over not being truly human, over being simply a copy (a replica, if you will - a simulacrum of humanity but never the real thing, at least in his eyes). Copying his opponents' styles because that is what he has always done, not just in fighting but throughout his free life in general: speedrunning learning how to be a person by observing other people, how they act, how they speak, how they present, and recreating those lessons for himself. As well as that mind-bending identity recursion of Replica being an incarnation of Sidestep - being an incarnation of a Regene - being an incarnation of the original gene donor; copy of a copy of a copy, sharpened down to a piercing focus but losing parts of itself along the way (again, in his eyes only). Not feeling whole, not feeling like his life has been a one continuous path but rather been reset and started over from square one many times over.

Civilians he doesn't really concern himself with, but neither would he go out of his way to harm them; his fight is against the heroes and the powers that be. He is not above causing injury, be it mental or physical; however he hasn't killed yet… yet. He thinks he is ready to kill and would do it if necessary, it simply hasn't been so far - but that's just one of the lies he's telling himself :)

In fact, he is scared of death; not really his own but more death as a very concept. I imagine that at the Farm, death would have been very clinical, clean - the rebellious or faulty being disposed of efficiently, no goodbyes, no bodies, no mourning. Someone will just be gone one day and eventually, if they have been gone long enough, it will be assumed they were likely recycled. But Regenes would not be familiarized with death, not allowed to ritualize it. Therefore, death wasn't really something that Josiah has had much direct experience with before running away, he doesn't know it, he doesn't understand it, and it scares him. He doesn't like seeing dead bodies, feeling this uncanny valley of his mind scrambling for hold over nothing. But all of that is very subconcious and not something he ever gave much thought to - he sees himself as cold, driven and efficient, so while he thinks that he could kill if he had to, well… we shall see, especially if-when he is finally confronted more directly with his past at the Farm; THAT might get horribly bloody, and I am looking forward to him having a breakdown over it :)) We love to see a character's self-perception being shattered, haha.

"Go on, then."

Spider-Punk — or Hobie, as you knew him, stood opposite you in the backstreet, arms crossed and with a grin you could practically see under his mask. The metal spray paint can was cool in your hand, which was already clammy with adrenaline as you brought the it to the wall.

This was your idea. It was supposed to be a joke at first, but Hobie thought it was brilliant. He wouldn't let it go: tagging up places in this part of town — the part where people like you and Hobie weren't welcome. Behind the fences and less-than-subtle signs to "keep out", entire neighbourhood reeked of Wilson Fisk: anti-punk, anti-rebellion, autocrat, about class and "serving the man" — whatever the hell that meant. Now, it was going to reek of paint that probably wasn't safe to inhale — at least, the back of some rich white bloke's house was.

Well, "rich white bloke" and "random politician" were interchangeable. You'd be fine; that's what Hobie told you anyway.

The can rattled in your hand as you shut one eye, holding your breath before red paint spurted out onto the wall. Hobie watched in silence, probably in amusement too. You debated threatening him with the can as a joke while you marked out the start of your drawing, feeling the eyes of his mask on your back. The breath you'd taken in before left you, and you haphazardly drew in another shallow one.

You'd been thinking about this for a while: making trouble under the guise of your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Punk, or protest, as Hobie liked to call it. His vigilante persona didn't exactly have the best reputation around here, or anywhere, in fact. Maybe you could change that — or worsen it. Either way, you had to breathe, so you took in another breath.

"Ah, shi—" The tight feeling in your throat exploded into a fit of violent coughing, and you were barely able to feel Hobie's hand on your back as you reeled away from the wall. "What the...?" you managed, before your eyes squeezed shut again, feeling another cough wring through your lungs.

"A'ight, that's definitely not normal." Hobie leaned over with a hand on your shoulder before he took the can out of your hands. You could make out his frown behind the tears stinging at your eyes as you tried to swallow back another cough.

"Yeah?" You furrowed your brows, trying to straighten out your shoulders again. "Didn't know paint could give me TB."

"I haven't got TB," he shrugged, gloved fingers tapping at the can.

"Cause you've got a mask." Hobie suddenly gave you a ruthless thwack between your shoulder-blades, making you flinch. "I'm not coughing anymore, stupid!"

The eyes of his mask narrowed as you shot a look at him; the bastard was probably enjoying this. Maybe you were too.

"You wanna wear it?" he asked instead, thumb already hooked under the bottom of his mask before he pulled it back; his actual was expression more subtle, but still just as taunting.

"Don't you have a secret identity to keep?"

"Think you've got lungs to keep, big man." His knuckles knocked at the centre of your chest before pulling the mask over your face in one quick motion.

The fabric warmed your skin as you adjusted the neck of it a little, feeling the mask blink with you. It was weird; it was kind of like you had nothing on your head at all. But the warmth was definitely from the mask and not the fleeting feeling of his fingers on your chest — and not the devilish look he was giving you right now.

Creak...!

The two of you looked around at what sounded like a door opening. You looked at Hobie, and he just shrugged at you, lips pushed up in his usual unbothered half-frown. His Spider-sense musn't have gone off, but your heart rate did. If you were going do this, you better do it quick.

Though your reference was on your face right now, you knew Spider-Punk well enough to remember the mask. Hobie let out the start of a chuckle when he recognised the giant white eyes you painted over the red. The mask definitely helped. Your arm, already covered in specks of paint, made a popping sound as you reached up to do the spikes, finishing the giant mural of sorts of your lanky, loud-mouthed, anarchist best friend.

The punk in question gave you a slightly curious look as you stepped away, the eyes of the mask on your face narrowing as you scanned over the dripping wet portrait. Pulling it off of your head, your hair was somehow still completely in place as you handed the mask back; no wonder his wicks fit in there.

"Well," you started, watching him look at the mural. "Aren't you gonna sign it?"

"It's your work." He tilted his head down a bit, though mirth was already tugging at the corners of his mouth.

"Yeah, and it's of you." It seemed like you didn't have to tell him twice before he zipped the can out of your hands with a flick of his wrist, already spraying an X onto the wall despite the mask hanging by his side. He didn't so much as clear his throat (lucky — you nearly died) as the letters F, N, S and M followed in each section of the X. That was the same symbol on the back of his vest, but you'd never bothered to ask about it.

"What does that stand for?" you questioned, arms folding as you mirrored his stance from before.

"Guess."

"I asked so I wouldn't have to guess." A silent grin you didn't want to entertain started forming on his face. "Fine, uh..."

You wracked your brain; it was probably more simple than you thought, but all your brain could conjure up was: "Fascists need stopping... uh, Monday?"

That got a ruthless snort out of him, making you press your lips together to try and take back your words. "Just Monday?"

"You told me to guess," you shrugged, rolling your eyes before they landed on the painting again. It was still wet; it was warm out, so the dripping wouldn't stop anytime soon. For some reason, it was always sunny in these neighbourhoods, almost like those autocrats had bought the sun too. Whatever, you didn't need the sun — a rebellious 6ft punk did just fine anyway; at least, that would explain why you were so warm around him all the time. "You gonna tell me or no?"

"Facists need stopping..." he mused, in a gratingly posh accent, hand brought up to his chin in a dramatic mockery of pondering. "Nah, I was thinkin' we should just leave it, you know? Let 'em be, innit?"

Hobie Brown — the only person you knew who would joke about their ideologies just to poke fun at you.

"Yeah, yeah, every other day of the week," you added dryly, getting a cackle out of Hobie.

"Thought you were meant to be smart, darling." The remnants of his mock-posh voice bleeding into the "darling". You could just tell he was being unserious — it was something you hated and loved about him. Why would you want him to be serious...?

"Thought you were supposed to be helpful," you spat back, getting another entertained breath out of him. Hobie shook his head before you suddenly snatched the can out of his hand, pointing it at him. The both of his loosely came up in mock-defense, but the grin on his face only grew.

"You threatenin' me now, yeah?" It sounded less like a question and more like another jab at your pride. Things had been a bit too quiet between you two recently, and you felt yourself getting fired up; it was a shame that your heart always raced like crazy whenever the banter started rising.

"Do it, then," he proposed at your silence, taking a step towards you and making you step back. "What's a bit of paint? You gonna cough again?"

"I actually will." You attempted to scrunch up your face in annoyance.

"Cough? I bet." His head tilted down to look at you, wicks shadowing everything but the amused glint in his eyes.

"You've got a serious problem." And you'd got a seriously warm face.

"Got more than just one problem, darlin'." You hated the way it came out of his mouth this time; you'd rather he pretend to speak like Fisk.

"Stop calling me that or I'll actually spray you."

"Didn't know you were a cop."

"Hobie." You let out a sigh, only serving to get another low chuckle out of him; he was so close you could almost feel the vibrations of his laugh. The fact that he was freakishly tall didn't help in the slightest, his silence along with the swirling feeling in your stomach making you unconsciously take a step back.

You winced immediately as you felt your back stick to the wet paint. "Oh, what the hell..."

Hobie's snickering didn't help. "You didn't have to move, you know."

You decided to ignore that, peeling yourself off of the wall and glancing behind you to see your back imprinted on the neck of your Spider-Punk portrait.

"Interesting artistic choice," he mused.

"Shut up, Hobie."

"On it, boss." You felt his hand on your shoulder before he turned you around, making the air catch at your throat as he peeked at your back, which now had a portrait of its own. "Blood of Monday fascists — very rebel. Got your outfit sorted for tonight."

"Your gig's tonight?" you groaned, trying not to look at his face over your shoulder and instead tossing the can back into the bag of other paint cans, still managing to catch how his lips pushed up in indifference, and probably mild entertainment.

"Nah, we're going out, darlin'," he snickered, and you felt him pinch the fabric wet with red paint to peel it off of your back. The rest of you was probably about to turn cartoonishly red too; this man just wouldn't give it a rest.

"Right, and I'm supposed to 'go out' looking like I got shot in the back."

"Like I'd let you," he muttered, removing his fingers from your back before shrugging off his vest, tossing it to you with the light clink of pins and buttons.

You raised an eyebrow, but he wasn't elaborating, so you put it on, trying not to cringe at the feeling of drying paint on your back. The vest was comfortable, though a bit heavy; it was cool, familiar, nice-smelling — like Hobie.

"Lookin' like a little me," he teased.

"I swear, if one more word comes out of your mouth—"

Your threat was cut short by the deafening blare of alarms, the wall in front of you flashing with a red that wasn't paint. Rich white bloke...

"Do all of them have alarms?" you whisper-shouted to Hobie.

"Looks like Willy does."

"Willy..." your brows knitted together as you watched Hobie pull his mask back on. "Fisk?!"

You'd just drawn a giant mural of Spider-Punk at the back of Wilson Fisk's house. A giant signed mural.

Without a chance for you to think, Hobie slung his arm around your back, and you weren't sure whether to be worried about being caught, annoyed about the paint pressing into your skin or absolutely bewildered as you felt your feel lift off the floor, clinging to him for dear life.

The bag of paint cans were zipped into his arm, with you, still wearing his vest, held against him by the other. Another one of his relentless cackles ripped through the air alongside the "thwip!" of his webs. Despite how absurd this was, a laugh of your own escaped too when you made out the fuming face of Wilson Fisk himself, a powerless, shouting little stain on the ground as you zipped away.

The fascists could wait 'til Monday. Right now, you had a gig to go to with Spider-Punk — or a date; he'd figure it out once the police were off of his tail.

CH 9 - AT THE SIGN OF THE PRANCING PONY

love the rhythm of this book: we travel to a new location, learn a detailed history, and then have an adventure before moving on. wish I knew how Tolkien makes this feel like the best tour ever instead of a total yawn the way it does with most secondary world fantasy!!!

with a sense of petty satisfaction, I note that in Bree the races of Big and Little People live together in harmony and Tolkien calls it an "excellent arrangement"

CH 11 - A KNIFE IN THE DARK

at this point Fatty is streets ahead of all the other hobbits in this book in terms of discretion and not playing the fule. Sam is second place.

don't let Bill's insults get you down, Strider, not one but TWO princesses will have fallen in love with you at first sight before your story is over

always loved the moment when they see lights on the horizon as Gandalf is battles the Nazgul on Weathertop. It's a cool moment, fun to remember that Gandalf is having his own adventures not far away, but it also foreshadows the narrative polyphony in the second half of the plot.

the Fall of Gil-Galad stanza is a top ten LOTR poetry moment, I know it by heart and cry every time. but??? for the first time I notice that it uses the Lay of Leithien tetrameter? maybe that's why I respond so strongly - it's so reminiscent of my Favourite Poem Everrrrr.

as the landscape changes, we've moved out of the misty, uncertain history of the old forest and the barrow downs into the recorded epic history of Middle Earth - the kingdom of Arnor, the Second Age and beyond to Luthien and Beren; and I'm just so fascinated by how Tolkien does his exposition and how interesting he makes it.

in addition, Tolkien makes a calculated choice to tell the Tale of Tinuviel right before the attack of the Nazgul; it's quite an unforgettable juxtaposition of light and darkness. before Sauron's most dreadful servants attack we're told the story of the woman who beat him AND his master in the Elder Days; one of the ways that Tolkien keeps the darkness from overwhelming his story is not just to keep emphasising the light, but putting the light FIRST, assuring us that the darkness can be beaten and healed from before we even experience the darkness.

the confrontation on Weathertop is the first moment there's actually been a FIGHT between the Black Riders and our protagonists and it doesn't disappoint, it's super epic as Frodo slips into the spirit world to see the Nazgul as they really are, but on top of that...like, there is SUCH a psychological element to the Nazgul threat, it's their power over mind and spirit that is most dangerous, and I feel this is both Tolkien's faith and his trauma enriching the story.

CH 12 - FLIGHT TO THE FORD

the elfstone on the bridge!!! it's so nice to know that Glorfindel is lookin out for them

but also: this bridge crossing is to my mind so extremely closely related to the bridge crossing in THE SILVER CHAIR where they meet the Lady of the Green Kirtle. the same sense of liminal threat

trolls? Aragorn is the real troll here, he's known all along which trolls these are. ngl it's one of Tolkien's hallmarks that he'll write a person of ineffable significance and dignity and then have them come out with the silliest practical jokes, it's something I really wish they'd put in TROP but do they???? nope

Tolkien is always so dignified but this chapter sees two people whacking a troll on the backside in close succession, amazing

Sam's song is so hilarious but my favourite bit is Tom recognising his uncle's shinbone at a glance

"his bootless foot" is the most gorgeously silly pun it kills me EVERY time ("bootless" archaic meaning = futile or ineffective, in case anyone didn't know)

it is so incredibly important to this book that Glorfindel is someone the Nazgul run away from crying for their mummies - it's absolutely vital to Tolkien's vision that there are people like Glorfindel, Tom, and Faramir who have the power to resist evil and I consider it one of PJ's primary failings as a Tolkien adaptor that he purposefully eliminated nearly every instance of this.

"by Elbereth and by Luthien the fair" not me realising for the first time that he swears by Luthien because she famously faced Sauron and won

okay so I can appreciate the reasoning behind PJ's decision to introduce Arwen, a character of great importance to Aragorn, here in place of Glorfindel; and I don't think that decision by itself broke anything in the story. but what does still rankle is the decision to take Frodo's moment of agency and molten awesome away from him and let him spend the whole scene drooling in Arwen's arms, when Tolkien found a way to orchestrate the scene in such a way as to emphasise the agency both of the elf and of the hobbit.

ANYWAY THIS SCENE IS MOLTEN AWESOME.

thus Book 1. I think that the main thing I have to say about it in terms of its place in the larger story is that I think it's VERY important to the entire rest of the book that the hobbits get a chance to have adventures on their own before becoming a part of the fellowship. because the Fellowship is not going to be around forever. by the end of FOTR Frodo and Sam need to set out on their own, and Merry and Pippin are going to be kidnapped by orcs. book 1 prepares them for that. book 1 gives them the opportunity to make plans, change their plans on the fly, learn exactly how much trouble they're in and how many dangers threaten them in the wild, and start learning who to trust. book 1 lets them experience the consequences of their small size, weakness, inexperience and folly. book 1 also shows them that they are NOT helpless, even on their own; that they can appeal to allies for help; that Providence is looking out for them; that evil CAN be beaten.

I just love it a lot :')

The Basics:

Xenia has made a reputation for herself as Sirena, telling dirty tales for patrons of a high-end brothel—while on the other side of a curtain. Temporarily out of a job and seeking shelter, she takes on the persona of your typical housekeeper, taking a post at a gloomy mansion with a gloomier boss. Ethan is hiding away from the world after a tragedy that changed his life; and he has no time for the perky, mousy girl who can't even seem to cook. But as danger lurks beyond the walls (and maybe within) they're forced to work together... among other things.

The Review:

If there's one thing Grace Callaway knows how to do, it's write a ROMP. This is her take on a Gothic historical romance a la Northanger Abbey (which is to say, kind of a loving spoof of Gothic romance with a real, warm love story at the center). Arguably, other Grace books have actually been a little heavier on the Gothic; I'd actually call this one of her lighter outings. But you get spooky stories, you get terrified servants, you get creepy things that go bump in the night and also non-creepy things that go bump in the night by which I mean OUR LEADS.

Speaking of, if you're a fun of grumpy/sunshine, this is about as Grumpy/Sunshine prime as I think you'll ever get. Ethan's not an asshole, exactly. I mean, he kind of is, but in a sympathetic way that really doesn't get that heavy. He's not mean, he's grumpy. And with good reason, even though he needs to straighten up (and does). Xenia is sunshine personified, sweet and perky and funny in a way that Callaway writes so well. It's no wonder he's charmed by her. You, the reader, are charmed by her from the jump.

Ethan and Xenia have both been through it. As someone who enjoyed The Lady Who Came in from The Cold, Ethan's parents' book (would recommend) I was a little worried about what would have him so torn up as this novel opens. Fortunately, it did nothing to ruin the general Blackwood HEA (and I should have figured as much). But it is a very valid issue, and I really liked both the classic Gothic drama of it all and Ethan's very real insecurities and loss of identity.

Xenia... has quite a backstory. I can't give any of it away, but BOY was the climax of this novel (besides the other climaxes) crazy. Which is what I want from a Grace Callaway book. I want sexy, I want funny, I want feelings-y, I want... yeah! A little zany! In part because of the removal from the hub of London (we're squarely in Chudleigh Bottoms, from whence one of Callaway's favorite historical romance families hails) and in part because of the madcap Gothic plot, this one reads a bit more "adventurous" to me, whereas Grace's previous series had more of a mystery/potboiler vibe.

You get some secret identity shenanigans, which I'm personally into—but if that isn't your thing, don't worry. It isn't dragged beyond its logical conclusion, and honestly? Once these two are really on the same page, they're rather adorable together. They have this fun, sexy relationship, and Ethan clearly cares about making sure Xenia feels respected. There's something kind of doting about the way he cares for her, and I'm personally about it.

In all, I'd say that though there is pain and a satisfying emotional arc, this is one of Grace's less angsty installments compared to a book like Pippa and the Prince of Secrets or Regarding the Duke. There's angst, but it's definitely more on the fun and sweet side.

The Sex:

OKAY.

Grace Callaway sex scenes always stand out, but this one really goes to a different place with it. Because yeah. Xenia is a virgin. But she certainly has a filthy mind, and she put its to good use weaving erotic stories for her clients. And yes. Ethan does get in on that action.

The way it's written, especially in the scene where they... do the full nine yards with it... is both hot and fun. It's over the top in the most self-aware, delightful way possible. I was kicking my feet all the way through it.

And the more "standard" sex scenes are of course, a lot of fun as well. Callaway simply writes sex scenes like she actually enjoys writing them, which I appreciate.

I noticed more attention paid to the safety aspects surrounding sex in this one, which I also appreciated. Definitely seems to be a trend I'm seeing more of in historicals recently, and it's done here in a way that fuels the tension rather than taking away from it.

It's adventurous, it's light, it's got a bit of an autumnal thing going with the Gothic of it all. And it's kicking off a new series, with fabulous teases for the next siblings. (One of those brothers is going to destroy someone's heart. I just know it.) I am MORE than game.

Ephemerality of Self-Identity in Only Friends, episode 6

Love, LOVE, LOVE how Only Friends captures the chaos of being in your 20s so fucking brilliantly. Everyone seems self-assured and confident, until a pebble drops and unleashes a wave of hypocrisy and insecurities that reveals more about themselves than the person who threw the stone.

Sand confidently tells his mom him and Ray are just friends who sometimes have fun with each other. But then he goes to some unhinged lengths to execute a twofer: revenge on Top for stealing his ex and on Boston for ruining the perfect fairytale delulu narrative he was building in his head about how Ray and him were becoming a couple.

Top could not stop telling Mew time and again that he has changed for the better and will do anything for him. But the second Sand challenges his new persona and calls his bluff, he gets enraged enough to boast how "He can get anyone he wants" giving away the truth that Mew is a conquest to him, a fresh new experience that is exciting at the moment.

Boston has been the agent of chaos who lives life however the fuck he wants, projecting himself as the most self-assured in the group, but when Ray stormed in and questioned him how could he do this to his friends, to Mew and Top, the first sentence out of Boston's mouth was "I don't hate Mew at all" ...Okay? Boston may proclaim himself as the lone wolf who is above it all, but deep down he also harbours insecurities about his reputation in the sexual marketplace, and the questions of his morality that arises with it, especially compared to someone like Mew, who he knows is not as virginal as he claims to be.

And Mew. Mew who was so fine with being single and inexperienced, Mew who made a boyfriend project out of top-tier Top. The moment he learned about Top's infidelity, all his insecurities came pouring out. "Why did it have to be Boston? Did you guys plan this together? You just wanted to mess with a virgin idiot like me? Did you have fun? Did you laugh about me together in bed?" Oof, Mew. That is some good TopBoston fanfiction.

I know I'm missing many more instances of hypocrisy and insecurities (the Boston-Nick-Gap interaction demands a separate post). But the trend is clear: these character have no idea who they are, who their friends are, and are yet fighting one another about who's winning in life -- according to their own yardsticks (brilliant fight analysis post by my bestie @lurkingshan)

The self-identities of the youth is fleeting and ephemeral, so porous and unstable that a single, well-aimed word can bring it crashing down.
