Nacogdoches is one of dozens of Texas cities that have planted pollinator gardens, providing way stations for the long monarch migration
Take the people of Nacogdoches. Billed as the “Garden Capital of Texas,” the town of 35,000 has long promoted beautification efforts, including projects with the local Stephen F. Austin (SFA) Gardens. Nacogdoches recently went a step further, joining more than 600 cities nationwide in taking the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayors’ Monarch Pledge. By signing on, leaders commit to expanding monarch habitat and educating residents about pollinators.
In making their improbable journey, monarchs need all the help they can get. East of the Rocky Mountains, the butterflies head south at the end of summer and, after overwintering in central Mexico from late October to March, begin their long return north. Milkweed, essential for monarchs, and other nectar-producing plants serve as way stations, providing nutrients and shelter en route.
Much of the monarch’s decline in recent decades can be linked to the disappearance of these way stations, often due to development. By designing and planting a series of pollinator-friendly gardens beginning in 2019, Nacogdoches became a champion of monarchs and other pollinators, sending a message of hope for many migrating species.
That positivity extends to the human population. “The four monarch gardens in Nacogdoches provided opportunities for a diverse group of people to learn about and plant these pockets of conservation,” says Dawn Stover, representative for SFA Gardens at the time of installation. “We had generations of gardeners making these projects come to life.”
Selecting native flora not only helps pollinators. It also educates home gardeners who might have overlooked certain plant species. “As people watch early-blooming penstemons give way to summer wild bergamot and giant cornflower, then transition to fall with goldenrod and asters, they become enchanted with the living world,” says Kim Conrow, past president of the Native Plant Society of Texas.
The Nacogdoches gardens—each registered as a Certified Wildlife Habitat®—were the result of an effort between the city’s Parks & Recreation Department, NWF’s Monarch Conservation Urban Outreach and Monarch Stewards programs, SFA Gardens and the Native Plant Society of Texas, with a donation by the James A. “Buddy” Davidson Charitable Foundation. “[These gardens] are a way for us to celebrate the great partnership and collaboration with the communities to support monarch migration,” says Rebeca Quiñonez-Piñón, climate-resilient habitats senior manager and monarch recovery strategist for NWF.
Nacogdoches is among dozens of Texas cities that have taken the NWF pledge—currently the second most of any state. Others include the Lower Rio Grande Valley city of McAllen, where the renowned Zapotec artist Irving Cano’s mural “Destino Monarca” was installed in 2022.
Both the mural and the gardens are “conduits helping us to raise awareness about the situation of the monarch butterfly but at the same time increase native habitat in urban areas while we educate others,” Quiñonez-Piñón says. “We can see the demonstration gardens as creating art, too.”

How Foundations Support Housing and Social Service Charities Nationwide
How Foundations Support Housing and Social Service Charities Nationwide
The United States is grappling with a growing crisis in affordable housing, homelessness, and access to essential social services. While government funding plays a crucial role, philanthropic foundations have become indispensable partners in supporting charities and organizations addressing these issues.
The Funding Need: A Crisis Outpacing Resources
Homelessness in the U.S. has reached unprecedented levels, with over 650,000 individuals currently experiencing homelessness—a 12% increase since 2022. Factors such as rising rents, poverty, inadequate social services, mental health challenges, and substance abuse contribute to this escalating problem. Public funding often falls short, prompting charitable organizations to rely more heavily on philanthropic support to bridge gaps and pilot innovative solutions like tiny home villages and wraparound service models.
Who Is Impacted by the Lack of Funding?
The lack of adequate funding disproportionately affects vulnerable populations, including low-income families, individuals with disabilities, seniors, veterans, and children. These groups face housing instability, unsafe living conditions, and limited access to essential services, perpetuating cycles of poverty and marginalization. Communities also bear the burden, as homelessness strains local resources, increases healthcare and emergency service costs, and erodes social cohesion.
How Many Organizations Are Giving Grants?
According to FoundationSearch, over 16,000 philanthropic foundations in the U.S. actively provide grants to nonprofits focused on homeless shelters and housing-related causes. Collectively, these foundations manage assets exceeding $2.6 trillion, highlighting the significant impact of philanthropic capital in this sector. States like California, Florida, Texas, and New York have the highest concentration of housing-focused foundations, but philanthropic giving benefits every state.
Average Grant Amounts and Giving Patterns
Grant sizes vary widely, reflecting the diversity of foundation priorities and capacities. In 2022, the average grant size for U.S.-based recipients was approximately $28,000. Larger foundations, such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, have made multi-million dollar commitments to housing and social service initiatives. Community foundations also play a vital role, with top recipients averaging grants in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, while grassroots organizations often receive smaller yet impactful awards.
Foundations support various aspects of housing and social services, including capital projects like constructing tiny home villages, funding operational costs, providing wraparound services, and supporting advocacy efforts. Notable contributors include the Oak Foundation, Sobrato Philanthropies, and the Dell Foundation, which have invested significantly in innovative housing solutions.
Future Trends: Growth, Innovation, and Collaboration
Looking ahead, philanthropic foundations are expected to continue expanding their support for housing and social service charities. Trends indicate a focus on innovative solutions, such as modular housing and integrated service models, as well as increased collaboration among foundations, nonprofits, and government agencies. This collaborative approach aims to maximize impact and address the complex challenges associated with housing and social services.
Conclusion
Philanthropic foundations play a crucial role in addressing the nation's housing and social service challenges. Their financial contributions, strategic initiatives, and support for innovative solutions are essential in bridging funding gaps and enhancing the effectiveness of charities working on the front lines. As the crisis continues to evolve, the sustained and growing involvement of foundations will be vital in shaping a more equitable and supportive society.

Do you have any travel plans? Any recent travel? I just got home from a trip a few days ago. My husband and I flew down to San Antonio to attend the wedding of a close friend, then we flew to Washinton Dulles and rented a car and drove to Wilmington DE to visit my Granny (and my parents/brother/SIL/nephews were there visiting her as well), then we drove the rental car back to Cleveland and picked up our car from the airport. As for upcoming travel plans… nothing til the family reunion in June.
Have you read anything good lately? I read some very interesting longform articles during our flights last week.
Have you watched anything good lately? Severance season 2 was pretty good. Also seasons 1-2 of Silo.
What type of music do you like listening to? Classical, classic rock, and occasionally trance.
Have you been to any good restaurants lately? Yep, we went to some good restaurants in San Antonio. We went to La Fonda on Main, and there was also a little cafe downtown where I had the best Croque Madame but I can't remember the name of it now. And when we were in Delaware, we went to Buckley's Tavern with my Granny and my parents. That place has been a family favorite for decades.
Have you cooked anything good lately? No, I've been too tired from all that traveling to bother with cooking. The most elaborate thing I've made since getting back home has just been scrambled eggs and toast lol.
What’s your go-to drink? Water. I drink nearly 3 liters of water per day. I also have at least one cup of tea every day.
Do you have any pets? Yep, a budgie. She's currently chirping her little head off at me lol. She's been batshit crazy ever since we picked her up from boarding.
Which area of your town do you live in? How do you like it? I live in a residential neighborhood about 2 miles outside of town. I really like it here.
Where did you grow up? A small outer suburb of Cleveland.
What’s your astrological sign? I don't know/care what it is. I'm not into astrology so I'm not that familiar with what all the different signs are.
What are you most looking forward to tonight? I don't have anything planned for tonight. Just making dinner, maybe watching a documentary, catching up on laundry, etc.
What’s been the highlight of your year so far? The trip to Texas/Delaware.
Who do you like spending time with? Are you close? My husband, and yes of course we're close.
How did you end up living in this city/town/area? My husband and I moved back to the Cleveland area from Northern Virginia in 2021. He was on paid leave for over a year during Covid, and when he went back to flying, he found out that he was senior enough to transfer back to the Cleveland crew base. We missed living here, so we moved back. We found a rental house to live in while househunting, and then we bought a house a year ago.
What’s something you’ve accomplished recently that you’re proud of? I haven't had any noteworthy accomplishments recently.
What’s something new that you’ve recently tried? Taking an electric vehicle on a road trip. We got a Hyundai Ioniq 5 as our rental car and drove it from Northern Virginia to Delaware, and then back to Ohio. There's a little bit of a learning curve when it comes to finding compatible charging stations over that much distance and planning out all your stops, figuring out your range based on your speed and any headwind, etc. But I really liked it, it kind of reminded me of doing cross-country flight planning when I was in flight school (but obviously much simpler than that lol).
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live? I can't decide. I can think of multiple places where I'd be happy to live.
Do you have siblings? Are you close? Yes, a brother, and yes we're fairly close.
What would your life look like if you had unlimited money? I already live pretty comfortably so I wouldn't take much for myself. I'd put most of towards things like funding medical research, setting up charitable foundations, stuff like that.
What would yourself 10 years ago think of you now? She'd be shocked at what I've gone through in the past 10 years, in terms of medical problems, becoming disabled, and having to give up my career. But I think she'd also admire the strength it takes to go through all of that, and glad that I'm still happy and have a good life despite it all.
Do you identify as an extrovert or introvert? I'm extremely introverted.
Are you indoorsy or outdoorsy? Both, but I'm not nearly as outdoorsy as I was before I got POTS. Now, I can only do easy hikes and only on good days.
Are you religious or spiritual? I'm not religious (I'm an atheist), but I am slightly spiritual.
How do you celebrate holidays? It depends on the holiday. Christmas and Thanksgiving are the big ones that my husband and I always celebrate with family. I don't do much for minor holidays. Sometimes I attend a family cookout for Memorial Day or July 4th.
What were you like in high school? Quiet, nerdy, very tomboyish. Not too dissimilar from how I am now, except now I'm not shy and I'm much more self-assured.
If you could invite anyone to a party, living or dead, who would it be and why? I'd rather not throw a party. Attending parties as just a guest is fine because then I can leave early when I get sick of being around people.
What’s your go-to karaoke song? I'm not into singing/karaoke.
What’s your guilty pleasure? I don't feel guilt about liking any of the things that I like.
What’s the most regrettable purchase you’ve made lately? I can't think of anything.
What’s something random that lives in your brain rent-free? Eh I don't know. I think I'm pretty good at not letting things take up too much mental space when they shouldn't.
Would you produce your life story as a memoir or a musical? Memoir. I'm not a big fan of musicals.
Are you good at an accent? Not really.
What are you into and why? This is so vague. I'm into lots of things, for lots of different reasons.
What are you excited about? Springtime.
What are you proud of? My degree and pilots licenses/ratings.
What's the hardest thing you had to do this week? What's the easiest? Hardest: I don't know. I haven't had to do anything particularly difficult in the past week. Easiest: Uh, sleeping I guess?
What do you like about school/work? I don't partake in either of those things anymore. 😂
What’s something you wish you could change at school/work/home? I'd renovate the primary suite bathroom.
