New Simple Minds LP that I haven’t listened to yet. The last one had some good songs, but the mix was SO COMPRESSED THAT THERE WERENT ANY DYNAMICS ANYWHERE. IT’S THE AUDIO EQUIVALENT OF WRITING IN ALL CAPS WHEN THAT HAPPENS, BECAUSE EVERYTHING IS EQUALLY LOUD and it made the album impossible to listen to for more than a minute or two. Seriously, no whining; it was exhausting. There are dynamics in everything we hear in real life and, as you can see here, even in writing. It’s part of who we are as a species, how we communicate and how we sense our surroundings. Dynamics have kept us alive for millions of years, so forcibly removing them is wildly unsettling. I have my fingers crossed that this new album has some built-in breathing room this time.

[Real to real cacophony] [Simple Minds] [1979] [LP] The second Production of the genius John Leckie together with the Simple Minds. ���Real to real cacophony” is probably the most unwieldy album of the Scottish band. But at the same time it is full of excellent tracks. Besides the three hammer tracks "Factory", "Premonition" and "Calling your Name" you can find here many small mini works of art that you can confidently call short films. One short film more bizarre than the other. A round dance full of crazy, sarcastic, disrespectful allegations and accusations and opinions that mercilessly hold the mirror to our own eyes. And so completely the band in excellent( and not at all cacophonous) as well as playful way with their instruments, and create a sound so full of creativity and virtuosity, as well as an almost unbelievable wealth of ideas that takes your breath away. . . . . . Neapolis is the lost, brilliant Simple Minds album that time—and apparently the band—forgot. Back in 1998, most of Simple Minds’ classic “New Gold Dream” lineup reunited for one more album; dark, murky and heavily influenced by the EDM of the era, it harkened back to the band’s stark post-punk sound from the very dawn of the 1980s. A further 14 years later, the group would win back many of its earliest fans by exploring that sound again with its career-changing 5x5 tour, but in 1998, no one was having it. Simply put, the album flopped—so much so that Neapolis wasn’t even released in the US. The lineup splintered once again and the ahead-of-its-time collection was unfairly branded as their worst ever Today, the songs and production feel far more accessible and welcoming, and it’s easier to see that Neapolis was never really given a chance. The group had looked too far down the road, gamely crafting a record that Pitchfork would have been declared as career-defining if a Brooklyn band had released it in 2008. However, issued a decade earlier to compete against the comparatively easily digestible Cool Britannia vibes of Oasis and Spice Girls, the record was out of step with the garish times. In a sea of loud colors, Neapolis was an inscrutable black obelisk, and it sank away fast. Sadly, Neapolis remains the only Simple Minds album to never get a vinyl release, despite the band’s aggressive reissuing of its vast catalog in recent years. With that in mind, this obscure Italian 12” of the woozy lead single, “Glitterball,” is about as close as we can get to the album on vinyl. I found it in a grubby Las Vegas record shop a few years ago—a lucky break in a town not known for them. Will we ever see its misunderstood parent album arrive on vinyl? I’m guessing no…but I’d love to be wrong.

They were a great live band. This band influenced #u2 as they felt this record whilst recording #theunforgetablefire they even had the genius musician Bernie Hancock play on this beauty of music.
