It's not. Whereas chickens lay ~200-300 eggs, year round, and you can get babies around me at least for as low as $0.50 (on sale at box stores or at swaps) and a dozen hatching eggs for $3 (if you don't mind barnyard mixes) and chickens can hatch two or sometimes even three clutches in a year, with anywhere from 1 to a dozen babies, peafowl.... Don't.

Peafowl CAN lay up to about 30 eggs a year (give or take a few), but you're considerably shortening their lifespans to push them to do that every year- in a normal season where a hen sits a nest, she'll lay usually between 3 and 12 eggs, and that's it. There's no second clutch, she will take care of those babies until her next clutch is set, and the babies will continue to hang around her for another year or two if allowed, watching her raise their siblings and possibly even helping, until they're ready to raise their own. The cheapest I have ever seen peafowl eggs is $5 PER EGG, and they range all the way up to about $60 per egg for some of the newer varieties- if a breeder will sell them at all, which most don't. My own typically sell for $15 an egg, and I only offer about a dozen locally every year, if I offer them at all. The chicks, if a breeder is irresponsible enough or doesn't care if they die or even expects them to die (looking at you Brad), start anywhere from $15 to about $35 on average, with a minimum of 2, instead of 4 or 6 like most places that sell chicken chicks.

So, it's a lot harder to get into the same kind of trouble with peafowl, unless you have a lot of money to burn and are already set up for what you're getting. Then there's the fact that even if you have money to burn on buying too many, most people that buy eggs can't hatch them (peafowl eggs are extremely finicky and hate incubators) and most people that buy day old chicks kill them because they don't know what they're doing and peachicks are also very finicky.

Which means most people successfully getting peafowl are doing so at 3 months old or older, when the birds are much more stable, but also cost $60+ per bird, compared to even adult chickens that are often $10-25.

'Saaannnsssss!'Pup yelled. 'Your boyfriend is here!' He called out over his shoulder. Viper quickly, almost tripping, made his way down the stairs, straightening his outfit. Did he look okay? Oh stars he hoped he did...

'I brought you flowers~' He smiled, handing the huge bouquet over to the flustered skeleton. 'But they don't compare to how lovely my date looks.' Wisp flashed a charming smile. Viper's skull was bright blue by now.

'T-thanks, I'll put them in a vase right now.' He briskly walked to the kitchen to find a vase. How was he going to survive this date if it already started with this?? Viper looked at the blue roses, putting them in the vase with a smile. He'd have to sort them out a little more carefully later. Wisp was making small talk with Pup when Viper got back. The adorable skeleton excitedly telling the horned one about the new game he was playing. 'I'm ready.' Viper grinned. 'Have fun with Iris Pap. Don't eat too much pizza.' Pup gasped looking offended.

'There's no such thing as too much pizza!' He exclaimed making Wisp chuckle. Viper sighed with a smirk, getting his coat and stepping out. 'Have fun on your date, Sans!' Pup smiled waving them off. For a few minutes they just walked in silence, Viper glanced up to Wisp. The nightmare had a soft smile on his fangs and a dreamy expression.

'So ehm.... Where are we going?' Viper asked trying to strike up a conversation. His date looked down at him and smiled.

'You'll see~' He chuckled. 'I don't want to ruin the surprise.' A soft, reassuring smile curled on his fangs. He offered Viper his arm. The shorter skeleton took it without much thought, only to blush when he realised what he just did.

'Actually...' He started softly. 'I was surprised you asked me on a date?...' He looked up at the taller skeleton. Wisp blinked looking back at him a small 'hm?' escaping him. After a moment he seemed to snap out of his daze. 'Oh,' He responded, giving Viper a bashful grin. 'I suppose it was rather out of the blue.' He hummed. 'But I wouldn't have asked if I didn't like you.' Viper could feel his cheeks heat up his cheeks again. 'I actually quite like you.' A soft amused grin curled on Viper's face watching the nightmare's cheeks turn a soft yellow color.

'I thought you liked Blue?' He asked, Wisp nodded. 'I do...' He answered. 'But he's in the dog house right now and you deserved a nice date~' The tall skeleton beamed at him. Viper snorted and would have laughted if not for the 'OI' they heard behind them. Both turned around but... There was no one behind them?? They looked at each other and shrugged, continuing down the road. Viper's lights lit up when he saw the skating rink come into view. 'Ice skating?' He asked with an excited smile. It had been a while since he had. Wisp nodded, taking two tickets out of his pocket. They headed in, getting their skates from the clerk and hitting the ice. There weren't many people around so they pretty much had the run of the place. Viper smiled widely taking the first few strides. 'This is great!' He spoke looking back at Wisp. 'Than-' He couldn't finish his sentence watching his date fall face first on the ice. 'Oh shit! Are you okay?' He asked concerned skating over. Wisp chuckled looking up at him with an embarrassed expression.

'I'm a little more out of practice than I thought~' He laughed, showing Viper he wasn't hurt. The smaller laughed too, helping the other get up. 'Sorry you had to see that.' Wisp apologised. Viper chuckled. 'It's fine, I've never seen a guy fall flat on his face that fast.' He mused. The nightmare looked at him with a soft expression. 'Well I can't help it...' Wisp responded. 'I saw my cute date and just fell for him.' Viper was sure steam was coming from his skull. This guy really like to see him blush didn't he? He felt lanky digits gently take his hand. 'I'm glad he agreed to spend some time with me.' There was a warm smile on Wisp's fangs making Viper smile in return. Geez... This guy... Viper chuckled taking Wisp's hand and leading him around the rink. They enjoyed their time together, skating on the ice and sitting down for some hot chocolate when both got a bit chilly. 'We had a field of poppies in front of our house. Mother planted them by spreading the seeds after they and father found out they were having me.' Wisp told Viper, the other listening while sipping his hot chocolate. 'When I asked why mother told me the story of how they meet father. Those delicate flowers would remind him he deserved every bit of love they give him.' 'Wow...' Viper looked at his warm coco. 'That's really sweet... And here I thought they were just a pants stealing goblin.' He remarked. Wisp burst out into laughter, wiping a tear in amusement. 'Oh... They absolutely are~' Wisp grinned watching Viper almost spit out his drink. 'Usually they do it because it leaves the other stunned not knowing how to deal with the situation.' His grin widened. 'And sometimes they do it because it's the only thing octo-eggs can be incubated with.' Viper gave him a confused look. 'They're.... A particular kind of creature eggs. Let's leave it at that.' Wisp chuckled. He held out his hand. 'Shall we go for another round? Our dinner reservation isn't until another hour~' Viper blushed, fidgeting with the mug a little. 'Wait, you're taking me to dinner too?' He asked slightly surprised. 'I thought you'd only take me to one place?' Wisp stared at him then chuckled.

'That would be a pretty poor date now wouldn't it?' He answered, Viper grinned and took it. They skated a little while longer until it was time to go. The two skeletons strolled down the city center, lights brightening the cozy shops and restaurants. Viper was curious where his date was going to take him. Maybe is was the cozy dinner he and Pup once visited? Or maybe the new cafe? 'We're here~' He heard Wisp say, snapping him back to reality. His sockets widened at the sight of one of the most expensive restaurants in the city. He looked back at Wisp.

'Wisp...' He whispered. 'No, I-I can't accept this... This is one of the most expensive places!' Viper lightly tugged on the others sleeve. Wisp could see the concern in his sockets. The spirit gave his date a reassuring smile.

'I know.' He responded. 'But I heard they had the tastiest dishes in the city... And that you wanted to try them~' It wasn't a lie... The dishes this restaurant made looked extremely good... But still... Feeling Viper's hesitation the other softly sighed and leaned over. 'What if I promise to take Blue to have dinner here aswell?' Viper looked up in Wisp's lights. He wasn't going to give up on it. A soft chuckle and blush graced his cheeks. '... Promise?' He whispered. Wisp smiled. 'I promise~' He whispered, taking Viper by the arm and both entering the restaurant. It was different than Viper expected. He was expecting the fancy-smancy crystal chandeliers and crystal glasses but no... The restaurant was actually pretty intimate... Making him realise how serious the other took it. Wisp was talking to the host who nodded and showed them to their table. It was big enough to fit two, a lit candle in the middle and a rose in a small vase. 'Okay... Maybe this won't be Blue's thing.' He chuckled looking at the little vase. 'Too late, I'm taking him for dinner here after he's out of the doghouse~' Wisp responded with a chuckle. Viper smiled, taking the menu from the waiter. 'Pick whatever you want.' The nightmare insisted. So Viper did. It wasn't the most expensive, but it wasn't the cheapest either... He still felt a little guilty ordering... Until he had the first bite of his food. It was by far the most delicious dish he had ever tasted. He was grateful it wasn't those tiny amounts either. It was a decently sized meal and he enjoyed every bite of it. Wisp watched him, he didn't need to eat.... But it was rude to let his date eat alone... Plus he did enjoy mortal food once in a while. He was just glad to be with his date at the moment. 'That was amazing~' Viper chirped, having finished his meal. He looked at Wisp with a grateful look. 'Thank you...' Wisp smiled at him, the soft light of the candle flickering in his sockets.

'You're most welcome, Viper.' He handed the waiter the gold for the meal. 'Well then, let's go to the park viewing~' Viper looked at him stunned. 'E-even planned more?' He stammered. Wisp nodded. 'The stars are out tonight and the park is doing their viewing. I thought that would be a good close to our date?' Viper blushed, it was all he did at this point. 'Or did you want to go home?' The question was soft and careful. 'N-no!' He reacted looking at his date. He smiled and chuckled. 'I'd love to end it with the park viewing...' His soul was pounding in his ribcage. This had been one of the best dates ever. The park had some fairylights up in their trees along the pathways. Guiding the people going to the viewing to their spot. There were heated blankets laid out for them to sit on so they wouldn't get cold. The skeletons took a seat somewhere in the back on a small hill. 'So which movie are they going to play?' Viper asked, taking the bottle of soda Wisp handed him. 'The Princess Bride.' Wisp responded, getting a giggle out of Viper. 'Hey~ It's a good movie~' The spirit defended with a smirk. 'Besides, the Titanic seemed a bit too cliché.' Viper nodded, amusement playing in his lights. 'Oh, before the movie starts, how about dessert?' He asked. The other skeleton cocked his head confused. Dessert? They could have had that at the restaurant... His sockets widened when he saw Wisp pull out said dessert. Viper gasped, lights twinkling. 'PUDDI!!!' He gasped loudly, making other people whip around at them. 'S-sorry...' He blushed apologizing to the people he disturbed. Wisp chuckled and handed Viper the small bowl and spoon. The smaller eagerly devoured the custardy goodness. Enjoying the sweet notes and love that had been put into the dish. The movie started and at some point both were leaning  against each other, blanket wrapped around they shoulders to keep themselves warm. 'This date is great...' Viper softly sighed. He could feel the chuckle rumble in Wisp's chest. 'Would you like to go on another?' He asked. The smaller of the two snuggled closer into the other. 'Yes... But what about Blue?' He asked looking up at Wisp. 'I'm pretty sure he'd be hurt if you took me on another one when you haven't asked him yet...' He felt a tinge of guilt grip his soul. Wisp gently cupped Viper's cheek, the warmth of his bones banishing the cold. 'Don't worry...' The spirit whispered. 'He'll get a date he deserves.... Along with the attention he craves...' He placed a soft kiss on Viper's skull, making the other feel fuzzy. But a gasp and growl snapped them out of the moment. They looked up only to see Blue running from the 6-legged canine Wisp had as his familiar. ------------------------------ Blue managed to shake the large, angry canine after multiple rounds and crossing through the city center and woods. He was tired, aching and... Sad... He entered the house, heading up to his room. He didn't understand why the spirit took Viper on a date when he had displayed interest in Blue too. He noticed a small box on his bed, neatly wrapped with a label. Blue picked it up and looked at the label. 'To Blue from Wisp' a small smile curled his lips as he opened it... The box was filled with gummi dicks. A heart drawn on the inside of the box lid. THAT. BASTARD. If Blue had veins they would be popping up on his skull. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.

Chapter I: Spare No Expense

-Pro: InGen’s established relationship with Japan makes this perhaps the easiest and cheapest reserve to gain access to.

-Con: Japanese amber is not especially durable, finding viable specimens may be difficult.

Kaliningrad:

-Pro: Extremely durable amber, perhaps the highest likelihood of dinosaur era-amber.

-Con: While relationships between the USSR and the USA are thawing, this may be the most difficult reserve to gain access to.

MILLIPORE PLASTICS

Once we have our DNA samples and are able to begin incubating our dinosaurs, we are going to need something to incubate them in. Finding a synthetic material that is going to be able to replicate closely enough the makeup of a dinosaur egg will be difficult! Fortunately, there’s a small plastics start-up named Millipore Plastics that we believe has the capabilities to develop the eggs.

We’re going to need to acquire the company so that we can have the eggs made as our demand requires. This is easier said than done, however. If any of our competitors (such as BioSyn) catch wind of this acquisition, they may be able to start piecing together the project we’re working on right now. This will severely hamper our competitive advantage.

SO! I need you all to draft an offer to acquire Millipore that is good enough for them to accept, but also convincing enough that we can ensure the details of why we are looking to buy them out won’t be leaked. We need to make sure, through financial means or hopefully more creative means, that keeping the details of their partnership with us a secret is MORE valuable than leaking our secrets to our competitors. The Fuel. I haven’t talked about this but, I know it’ll be interesting. So, To cover what it’s like. It tastes like Teas. But CAN Be flavored with various items. They look like Energon. And can be various colors and grow in floral-like shapes. They can have from Rose and Jade color for medical, Purple and gold for sparkling/hatchling grade. Often found in a milk/cream-like constancy that comes from a chest of a breast feeding novian carrier. To pastel Orange and energon blue for lowgrade, and finally.. the main one. it comes in a clear white cyrstal and can be flavored because it has zero taste to it.

The Hatchling/Sparkling Grade is also used to feed cybertronian offspring, but makes them a little more energetic; but if warmed it will sedate them. The taste depends on what Solid Fuel the mother ate though. Spicy isn’t exactly suited for a cybertronian sparkling, it often upsets their little tanks. But sweet makes them want to fuel more! Some prefer it to spicy and savory. But if Sour, they’ll not want to drink it. But for hatchlings.. They will drink it anyway. Because that’s their carrier. The how shall we say. “Incubator” of their eggs or live young.

The Lowgrade is used for novians that are ill and can’t stand the normal grade. Often used to make medcine it acts like it too but can be infused with antispetic for internal wounds to be surgically cleaned and then either removed, replaced, or seal up wounds. Though, it can act as a boost if out of options and you need the cheapest grade to buy at your local fuel stall or shop. often used with soups and to make creams and gravies to enhance food.

The Normal Grade is.. plain and flavorless. mostly used as a base for sweets that Jiggle. As it is often compared to Agar Agar, the ingredient for earth gelatin desserts and meals. But can be frozen after flavored and colored with natural dyes can make the summer nights more bearable.  Sidenote: They also use it in trades with cybertronians incase they are low on energon.

Building a duckery

Recently, we incubated some of our duck eggs, because who can resist adorable little quackers?

Once we had all the quacking madness, we realized they needed a home separate from their parents.  Enjoying a challenge and being frugal, we utilized things around our wee farm to build them a new space.  We collect pallets from time to time and had a stash of old plywood stored from a roof renovation. Generally, we buy the hardware like hinges or latches, or reuse some other bits and pieces.

Beach Cabin Style

On this occasion, we decided to build the duck house off the ground so all the poultry friends had an extra shady spot to lounge in.

The ducks immediately let us know they approved of this idea.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could just turn your head around & rest it on your back to take a nap?

Ground Floor

The plywood is 8’ x 4’ & attached to 2 pallets that were about 4’ x 4’ each. Each corner was supported with a section of 4”x 4” timber, they were about 18” tall. These have 2”x 4” timbers in between for added stability. This thing ain’t going nowhere.

Everything was level with the help of random cinder blocks, cement bricks, and dirt and stones and stuff. Nothing is level on this property. It is good exercise to wander, only good thing I can say.

Additional Security

The chicken yard (which also encompasses ducks and turkeys now) has a Premier One poultry net electric fence surrounding it. So, each side is about 50’ long to contain the critters away from our garden in the summer time, but also protect them from foxes and raccoons and dogs and whatever else might choose to visit. We even had a bear appear a couple years ago, but it passed by the chicken house and just attacked our bird seed feeder, which incidentally is only a few feet from our actual human house. Fun story, no injuries, but the bird feeder has since moved further away from our back door.

Protect your hard work

We have a 5 gallon bucket of wood stain in a cedar tone that most projects get a nice slather with. It was one of those “accidental paints” at Lowe’s that we acquired at a deep discount, which is kinda the best way to make paint color choices. Good stuff, on sale, get it. So, we kinda have a Texas Longhorn feel about the place.

Framing

Next up are walls, which are 4 foot sections on back and sides, connected with 2” x 4” timbers used to frame the house.

We had a couple 2” x 6” timbers that we used for the front part of the frame, about 6’ tall, so that the front has a higher slope down to the back.

We use our Ryobi tools a lot, this set included a drill and saw and has been going strong since 2007 and has had many new Ryobi tools and batteries added over the years.

Fancy Linoleum

The easiest way to clean out these duck and chicken houses is to have a layer of linoleum or vinyl that is secured to the walls. It is easy to sweep out or scoop out the bedding and waste or even to hose it out if necessary. We just secure the sides with a staple gun and so far, have been happy with the results. It is great if you can find clearance pieces at the resale shops or habitat for humanity kind of places. Since we purchased this during the Covid-19 pandemic, I just ordered this through Lowe’s, “Royelle 12-ft W x Cut-to-Length Rock Hill Stone Look High-Gloss Finish”. It is a pretty cheap (was the cheapest option) and crappy product but it does the job, all that matters now.

Roof

Rather than just sticking an old piece of plywood on top, we decided to protect our hard work. We got a couple pieces of “Ondura 4-ft x 6.58-ft Corrugated Asphalt Roof Panel” with the corresponding nails from Lowe’s. We got brown to go with the ‘wood theme’ I guess we were creating on this build.

Ventilation

Because this is for the ducks, we leave gaps at the top for ventilation. Ducks produce a lot of wet poop and the ammonia levels would be too great if you close them in. Extra straw in the winter keeps them cozy and warm & they all huddle together, so we don’t worry about cold nights.

It is not recommended to have water or feed bowls in with ducks as they will only make a huge mess overnight with them. These ducklings were only a few weeks old, and it was early spring, so we provided a heat lamp at night and gave them a waterer to keep them happy and safe til morning.

Ducks don’t require a nest box like chickens, so there’s no point in building them a special thing. They just lay an egg where it pleases them. Don’t waste your time trying to teach a duck. Sometimes they lay it at night, sometimes they drop it as they wander through the yard.

End Result

Now we have a walk way for the ducks to go to bed in the evening. Each door is just a 4’ plywood panel with a 7.36-in Steel-Painted Gate Latch on each door, along with some nice heavy hinges.

We keep straw in a big plastic tote to refill the duck bed, along with a shovel and a curtain where all the bedding gets tossed onto & then put in compost or the garden or whatever. What do you think, would you have done anything different?

Something not everyone might think about amidst the growing Covid-19 situation is the effect certain games have on our lifestyle. Sure, Esports events and game conferences are being cancelled, but what about games like Pokemon GO that almost require you to go outside?

Will, Niantic have definitely been thinking about it themselves, because they recently announced to Polygon that they’re implementing a number of chagces which will allow their players to enjoy the game without having to go outside as much. The main changes coming include:

More habitats, so that more Pokemon can be encountered at home.

Incense packs have been reduced in price by 99% and last an hour.

Incubators can hatch eggs twice as fast

Several real-world community events have been cancelled or postponed.

Niantic postponed a Harry Potter event as well, and they’re not the only ones trying to make changes to help deal with the situation. Discord, for example, have offered increased functionality even for non-paying users to help with the increasing number of people working from home.

I’ve actually been kind of interested in checking out Games of Thrones: Beyond the Wall ever since I heard about it last year. Sure, it’s likely going to be a free-to-play gacha game, but hey, I’m a sucker for the Night’s Watch. We haven’t really heard or seen much about it in recent months, but Behaviour Interactive are in the midst of a press tour and have confirmed it will be released on iOS first on March 26th, with Android following on April 3rd. Pre-registration is open for both.

We’ve got a decent new game announcement this week as well: Door Kickers: Action Squad is a 2D side-scrolling platform/action game released late 2018 that’s a spin-off from 2014’s Door Kickers. It’s finally coming to mobile (having gone everywhere else first). You play as one of six different SWAT troopers sent into one of 84 different levels to deal with whatever situation has arisen - rescue the hostage, disarm the bomb… if you squint, it’s like a 2D solitaire Rainbow Six: Siege.

Pre-registration/Pre-Order is available for both iOS and Android. The App Store hints at a release date of April 8th, 2020, but that could change of course.

Singapore is the place to be if you want to get your hands on Legends of Runeterra before anyone else. An eagle-eyed twitter user has spotted that Riot’s own collectable card game offering has soft-launched on the Google Play store over there. We’ve not been able to find out if it’s landed anywhere else yet, but it seems to also be in the iOS app store in the region.

Last but not least; I know we don’t really cover PUBG much here, but the mobile version just got a colourmind mode in a recent update, which is neat.

How Can You Tell if Eggs Have Expired? Dr. Mercola By Dr. Mercola The date typed on store-bought food containers often refers to either a “sell by” or expiration date. However, if the food in question happens to be eggs, and you throw them out based on the assumption they’re no good past that date, you’re likely pitching perfectly good eggs. With a little experience, you can hone your skills at determining by sight and smell whether or not foods such as meats, vegetables and herbs are still fresh and healthy to eat as opposed to past their prime. With eggs, though, it’s a little more challenging. The date on egg cartons is often a tactic food manufacturers use to get you to buy them more often, so knowing how to test your eggs at home to determine their freshness save you quite a bit of money. The Food Product Dating section of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) says state-by-state egg laws may prohibit “sell by” dates, and adds: “Many eggs reach stores only a few days after the hen lays them. Egg cartons with the USDA grade shield on them must display the ‘pack date’ (the day that the eggs were washed, graded and placed in the carton). This number is a three-digit code that represents the consecutive day of the year starting with January 1 as 001 and ending with December 31 as 365. When a ‘sell-by’ date appears on a carton bearing the USDA grade shield, the code date may not exceed 30 days from the date of pack.”1 To clarify, the date on cartons indicates when eggs were laid, not the date you bought them. You might be surprised to find that eggs you may have assumed by carton dates to be “expired” are more often than not still perfectly good to eat. Assess Your Eggs With a Float Test The float test for egg freshness is very simple: Simply place your raw eggs into a bowl of cold water and watch what happens. Here’s what the eggs will tell you: When they sink straight to the bottom and lay flat on their sides, they are very fresh and excellent for frying or scrambling, but not so great for hard-boiling. Eggs that stand on one end or ‘tilt’ to one side on the bottom of the bowl are a few weeks old but still good to eat, and perfect for hard-boiling. Eggs that float are no longer fresh and shouldn’t be eaten, either hard-boiled or any other way. According to Food Hacks: “To give you an idea of (how) old an egg actually is, look at the ‘packed by’ dates on the carton, which are in Julian date form by the ‘sell by’ dates. Julian dates range from 1 to 365 days, and since most companies pack their eggs shortly after they’re laid, it’s a good indicator.”2 Giving eggs the float test for freshness works because eggshells are porous, meaning a tiny bit of air can get through, so fresh eggs, which have more air in them, sink to the bottom of the bowl. But there’s a little more to that story. What’s Cooking America explains further: “Eggs that tilt so that the large end is up are older, and eggs that float are rotten. The tilting is caused by air pockets in the eggs that increase in size over time as fluid evaporates through the porous shell and oxygen and gases filter in.”3 Other Ways to Test Eggs’ Freshness While some will tell you that holding a raw egg up to your ear and shaking it will reveal whether or not it’s fresh (as a sloshing noise may mean it’s no good), that’s probably an unreliable method. Many egg producers recommend a technique called “candling,” which the University of Illinois Extension Incubation and Embryology explains: “Eggs are candled to determine the condition of the air cell, yolk and white. Candling detects bloody whites, blood spots or meat spots, and enables observation of germ development. Candling is done in a darkened room with the egg held before a light. The light penetrates the egg and makes it possible to observe the inside of the egg.”4 To reiterate, candling is simply shining a bright light — a flashlight will work just fine — next to an egg to observe its contents. It can also detect spoilage, which would necessitate removing it immediately to ensure it doesn’t explode and contaminate other eggs. Experienced candlers in egg hatcheries can ensure the proper development of an egg before it produces a chick. Fresh eggs have a tiny amount of air space and a barely visible yolk. An older but still good egg has a larger air space and slightly darker yolk. It’s nearly bad when the yolk is much darker and spotty, with slight striations through the entire egg. In spoiled eggs, the yolk is mixed in with the white and is no longer round. Another simple DIY candling system described by 104 Homestead5 involves a solid-color wastebasket with a bright light inside it. Over the top, place a piece of cardboard with a hole cut into the middle (smaller than an egg). When an egg is placed over the hole and the light, it becomes somewhat translucent. The ‘Plate and Sniff’ Test As fragile as they are, some eggs can crack slightly, and you may not know how long it’s been that way or if it might be spoiled. One way to tell is to break the (slightly) cracked eggshell onto a plate. Fresh eggs contain a rounded, bright yellow egg yolk and the white part stays firm and fairly contained without spreading much. Older eggs have a flatter yolk and the white, known as the albumen, is quite a bit more fluid, so it spreads more. That detail is a hint to why older eggs are better to use when hard-boiling eggs; the shell is easier to remove because the membrane separates from the eggshell easier. If you can’t tell by looking at it, a good sniff will reveal its freshness as fresh eggs don't smell much like anything. Eggs on the not-so-good side may be detectable right away, and a spoiled egg may have you holding your breath. What Makes Differences in Egg Color? So, what makes some raw eggshells brown, white or even greenish? The difference between brown and white eggs, as the featured video explains, is simply a matter of the color of the hen laying them. White eggs are generally laid by white hens. Brown eggs are most often laid by red, brown or otherwise dark-feathered hens. Here’s another little-known fact: Look at the hen’s earlobes. That, too, helps indicate the color the eggs will be. White earlobes on a chicken usually indicate white eggs; red earlobes usually indicate you’ll get brown eggs. That said, not all brown chickens produce brown eggs. According to Michigan State University’s Extension site6, all eggs start out being white. Eggs that are something other than white (on the outside) have pigments deposited on them as they travel through the hen’s oviduct, which takes approximately 26 hours, and the shell takes about 20 hours to form completely. Ameraucana chicken eggs have the pigment oocyanin deposited on them as they travel through the oviduct, which permeates the eggshell and results in a blue egg. Brown eggs have had the pigment protoporphyrin deposited on them as their shells were formed, so only the surface of the egg is tinted. In Olive Egger chickens, a brown pigment overlays a blue eggshell, which produces a green egg. In addition, hens that produce brown eggs are often larger than the white hens that lay white eggs. Dark-feathered chickens often produce larger eggs simply because they tend to eat more, especially when compared to chickens of any color raised in CAFOs, or concentrated animal feeding operations. Many people who run home-grown egg-producing operations choose darker-feathered chickens for their backyard flocks because they reflect the “heritage” or “heirloom” breeds your ancestors may have raised. They’re also fed what CAFO chickens are not: a natural diet of green plants, seeds, insects and worms. What Factors Influence the Nutritional Value of Eggs? It’s generally not the color of the chicken that determines whether or not its eggs will be nutritious, but the way the chicken is raised. You may have noticed that the cheaper the egg, the more anemic-looking the yolk is and the thinner the shell. It’s not surprising that the eggs of free-range pastured chickens have much darker yolks and the eggs have a richer, more delicious taste. The cheapest eggs to buy are usually white, and white chickens are cheaper to feed when they’re raised in CAFOs, which: Are often unsanitary Are often obscenely overcrowded Usually feed their chickens genetically engineered (GE) corn and soybeans. Chicken feed may also include items like chicken feathers and animal parts Routinely feed the chickens antibiotics to help prevent the spread of disease Sadly, package labeling does little to help consumers buy the most nutritious eggs. In fact, packages may use phrases like “pasture-raised,” “free-range” and “cage-free,” but be aware that current laws allow these terms even if the chickens never saw the light of day or stepped foot in a pasture. If you can find a local store offering high-quality, pastured, local eggs, even if you have to pay a little more or drive a little further, it’s worth it. You’ll get more nutrition from pastured eggs and avoid the residual effects of undesirable substances CAFOs typically use to increase production. While growth hormones are banned in U.S.-based chicken operations, specially formulated feeds and pharmaceuticals bulk up fast production along with the chickens. Is Eating Eggs Healthy? There still may be doctors out there telling you to avoid eating eggs, maintaining they contain dangerous cholesterol that may increase your risk for heart disease. It’s based on the faulty premise that fat is bad for you, but it depends on the type of fat. Healthy fat from eggs (as well as olive and coconut oil, almonds and avocados, for instance) is actually essential for health. In addition, healthy egg nutrients include lecithin, folate and vitamins A, D, B2, B6, B12 and K, which are important and powerful antioxidants. Eggs are versatile, tasty and healthier for you by far than if you cut them out of your diet. Studies show that rather than causing high cholesterol, eggs actually help maintain normal levels. Arguments between individuals who didn’t understand that egg whites and their accompanying yolks were meant to be eaten together have focused on eating the whites only because the yolks (supposedly) can raise your cholesterol, or to eat the yolks only because the whites (supposedly) offer negligible nutritional value. A good explanation comes from Time, which states: “Scientific research has vindicated dietary cholesterol, finding that eating cholesterol has no real impact on cholesterol metabolism. That is, eating foods high in cholesterol does not mean you’ll develop high cholesterol … Egg yolks contain a vibrant mix of saturated and unsaturated fat — another nutrient that, when it comes from a healthy whole food source, is unfairly slandered. Yolks have a good helping of vitamin E, one of the nutrients Americans eat too little of. But the real case for egg yolks can be made by their abundance of carotenoids, nutrients in plants and animal fats that give things like egg yolks (and even autumn leaves) their yellow color. Egg yolks are rich in the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, which help eye health and protect against inflammation.”7 Numerous and Novel Ways to Use Eggshells You can even gain valuable health benefits from the eggshell.
