Vampire AU | The Rookery

“These are… beautiful.” Jake practically drooled as he looked down into his basket that was lined with fabric but watched as Nadine harvested the fresh strawberries into them, each one the size of their palm, but in a Na’vi hand, would scale to the traditional size of a strawberry; Eywa clearly thought to grow the plants to Na’vi scale and they’d also get the benefit of bigger fruits. Holding off on the harvest had been a wise idea and Jake was thrilled. They had seven plants grown and fruited and each had a dozen or so on them; a few small and a few still ripening but Jerome had been surprised that Eywa had made the changes but also kept the plant flowering; indicating to them the intent for more.
Kim was seated and her ears wiggled happily as she ate a small bowl of tomatoes with bread and Yerik broth; keeping her fed kept her from eating off the vines as N’deh and Morgan worked on harvesting the tomatoes. Jerome was making quick baskets to put their haul in and considering ways of separating the goods for the groups and the Clan.
The smell of the strawberries, he lacked with his mask but he had to imagine it was so sweet and juicy. Oh, he could barely wait to get inside and sink his teeth into one.
“I can’t wait to lick you.” He held up a particular red one, marvelling at the shine and the beauty of it; it felt soft yet had a clear firmness to it.
Nadine sniggered a little, adding three more into his basket and took it from him then set it down and replaced it with a new one. Jake still kept a hold of his claim but adjusted the basket on his lap properly.
“It’s an easy split between the five camps.” Jerome said, “We can probably do a once-a-month harvest if the plants fruit so often but if Wei can make us grow pots, then they can be distributed to the other camps as well.”
Then they’d no longer need to share. They’d be less restricted and could put the fruits to good use; making jams, jellies, and desserts… he ran out of ideas past that he was sure they’d go down very well and if they had more than necessary, then the clan would surely take them given the hundreds of mouths to feed.
“We’re definitely gonna have to make Pizza at some point. I’ll be making the sauce and tomato paste later if I can get the ingredients together.” Nadine giggled excitedly. “I only had a fresh tomato when my Abuela cooked and fresh stuff became harder to get after I signed up and left home. Jahan got her cookbook after she passed.” She sounded a little jealous at that.
“Who’s Jahan?” Morgan asked curiously.
“My sister.”
“You have a sister?” N’deh asked, looking down at the amputee in surprise. “I thought you were an only child.”
“Well… like Jake, I’m an identical twin so my sister looks like me but with longer hair, all of her limbs, and less emotional trauma,” Nadine explained, barely looking up from her harvest as she kept adding the berries into the basket. “Jahan’s a real nerd and a scientist so we kinda grew apart before I even left for the Marines.” She shrugged. “She was closer to Abuela so… I get why Jahan got it but still, I loved Abuela’s cooking a lot more.” She waved her prosthetic more dismissively.
“God, I hope I don’t get you two confused if I ever meet her. Me with some booze, I’mma a little more obvious and much flirtier.” Morgan remarked with some worry.
“She’s a lesbian so she’ll remind you quickly that you’ve got the wrong one.” Nadine snorted.
“That is a relief, thank you.” Morgan nodded appreciatively. Nadine gave him a thumbs up.
-
It took about ten minutes before the harvest was done before both berries were added to the collection and they helped Jerome finish up the separation. Nadine checked the growth of the bell pepper, Soyabeans and the Chilli Peppers but none of them were close to even flowering so they were left to their growth in peace. Late September and October were the estimated times of fruiting that Jerome gave.
Morgan took his portion of the berries and stuck them in his shack, as did Nadine with theirs, mostly to keep them safe from Kim (N’deh snuck his portion with Morgan’s to hide as well) and Nadine took the time to separate their camps tomatoes into piles depending on the purpose; chutney, sauce, puree, salsa, ketchup and replanting options. Not all were viable at once, even Jake knew that by the time he saw what was left for their camp after the split.
“Kim, no more,” Nadine called as Kim eyed the bowl.
The woman pouted softly. “They’re so nice.” She whined.
“I know but we won’t have any left to cook if you keep eating them. Once we keep getting more consistent harvest and the others are growing their own, then you can have as much as you want.” Nadine fixed the former scientist with a stern look.
“But the babies want them.”
“Well, the babies will have to be born and grow teeth to experience the true flavour of these fruits.” Nadine fired back, deflating the weak argument. “Which I look forward to seeing so please invite me when they get onto solids.”
Jerome coaxed Kim away from the fruits and convinced her to bring out the loom and threads to create more cheesecloth for cooking and straining so Jake also joined her to help.
-
Jake pushed himself into his shack quickly, tossing his mask off and onwards towards the fridge where he grabbed his bowl of strawberries, the milk and the butter (Nadine had found a recipe using milk powder, oil and salt and shook that fucker like it owed her money still it became solid) and pulled out some ground sugar, oil and a collection of bowls.
“What’tya making?” Nadine asked as she came in after him.
“Whipping cream.”
“Oohh.” Nadine cooed, “Oh, you smart little barstardo. You know, I can try and make meringues? Strawberries, cream on meringues… makes me feel weak at the knees.”
“Not now. I want to eat this fresh and as soon as.” He carefully measured the quantities and dumped them into the bowl.
“It’s not like my arm will get tired of beating egg whites.” She remarked, her prosthetic echoing loudly as she flexed it purposely.
“Next time.”
Without the proper heavy cream or real, genuine milk, it was hard but not impossible; most recipes had alternatives to cope with allergens or intolerances. But Jake was rather thrilled with his small bowl of white mush that looked stable enough to hold a shape but very soft still.
He tossed that into the fridge to cool down more while he prepped the strawberries into pieces and it took every fibre of his being not to sneak a piece as Nadine stared longingly but they both knew they’d get the prize sooner or later.
“Wanna get Morgan?” Jake finally asked, “Or maybe give him some cream?”
Nadine licked her lips. “I am not leaving you alone with our fruits. We can give him some later. Prep faster, Corporal.”
“Ay, Sarge.”
He spooned the cream into two dishes, halving the pieces and tipping them on the top without any elegance. He was too impatient now.
“Wonderful presentation.” Nadine couldn’t help herself in her snide remark with a grin.
Jake blew her a raspberry and shoved the bowl forward. She giggled and accepted and tossed him a spoon.
Neither of them waited as they drove spoon first and in sync groaned in pure delight.
Jake felt his taste buds were alight with the sharp but sweet flavour that went straight to his head, but the taste of the cream offered a softer side but still complimented the fruit's sharpness without withdrawing. He had never had a real one before… and the jellies certainly needed to be made from their stuff; not the preserved shit.
He wasn’t sure what sound it was but he didn’t care as he took another spoonful and sagged happily in his wheelchair, aware he had spread cream down his chin but who cared….
This was his new favourite fruit. 100%. Yep. They needed more now; Wei definitely needed to share his pottery skills and make strawberry pots for them.
-
The next day at Hometree, the humans met up and exchanged their goods, not just the berries by a few watermelons and pumpkins. A few more sticks of weed were added to each pile and in return, they got more garlic, potatoes and fresh herbs that weren’t common down in their area. Other small trinkets were exchanged between the other groups as per usual. The stuff meant for Hometree, Nadine took to the cooks to try.
Jake wished he could be there to watch their reaction but Tsu’tey pulled him into practice with the woven Ikran model to get the experience of what to expect. Ka’ani and Saeyla also partook.
In the end, Jake found himself hobbling up to Mo’at den with fresh bruises and a long cut down the back of his forearm when he had been bucked off but he had lasted well; a reluctant words of praise from Tsu’tey as he left.
Mo’at wasn’t alone, Eliza was there, surrounded by pots of fresh and dry herbs and clearly in the midst of learning both.
At the sight of him, Mo’at tutted and let him sit then reached for some paste to start cleaning. Eliza raised an eyebrow and began helping Jake remove his arm brace first and his hand became free of his glove.
Elisa set the glove down, grabbing some rags to wipe them down as Mo’at got to work on his arm. “Tsu’tey finally got bored of you?” she asked, examining the Tsahìk’s in action.
Jake snorted with a wince. “No, as fun as that would be a story to tell. Turns out I needed to secure my knife better when getting bucked off a giant puppet. Still, not too bad considering.”
“Indeed.” Mo’at remarked, “The wound is shallow but I’ll need to stitch it given its length.”
“How’d you last?” Eliza asked, coming to check his other buried, disappearing behind him as her small hands prodded and poked at his side.
“Better. Neytiri’s teaching is one thing but Tsu’tey has more spite in his-Ow.” He turned to the doc at a particular tender spot.
Mo’at handed Eliza some paste before the Tsahìk tabbed a cooling, numbing ointment down the cut’s edges, began to stitch softly and left Jake the feel the weird tugging sensation on his skin. “This shouldn’t scar but be careful this next day. Has Tsu’tey told you when you’ll make the climb?”
“Two days. He wants us all practising to stay on long enough to make Tsaheylu.” That was where he was struggling, even on a puppet because the moment he let go, maintaining grip was another matter and he could see why she moved him to go to Tsu’tey in that regard; he had better experience in training young hunters ways of Ikran.
Mo’at nodded softly. “This should not be too obtrusive but keep your arm wrapped the entire time. The climb will not be easy.”
Jake didn’t doubt that, it was a rite of passage for hunters to become Ikran Makto so easy was long gone. Still, Neytiri had definitely helped his endurance and no doubt every fibre of that was going to be tested. He was looking forward to that.
He could earn something here with the people.
Mo’at was nearly done by the time Nadine appeared with a bowl with a wide grin behind her mask.
“Good news, Strawberries are a hit. Bad news, the Na’vi almost ate them all. More good news, I saved four berries.”
“Oh, they have ripened?” Mo’at hummed curiously as she finished and set the bandages away. “Show me.”
“You can eat one. I saved one for you, Neytiri, Tsu’tey and Eytukan.” Nadine said, holding the bowl out.
Mo’at washed her hands down before she took the bowl and peered in, giving it a sniff as well. “It smells… so sweet and floral.”
“Tastes wonderful.” Jake agreed enviously at the sight.
Mo’at picked up one and set the bowl down, feeling the berry itself in her fingers; the texture of its skin and the seeds on the outside before she gave it another sniff and bit into it. It was mildly comical as her eyes widened and her pupils dilated a fraction like a cat as the tastily clearly hit. The rest of the berry did not last long before she set the stem down and covered the bowl with a leaf and a studious nod. “<I see…. That is a pleasant fruit.>” She licked her lips. “<Thank you. I will certainly give the others theirs when they next appear.>”
“<We’re trying to get more grown. Want us to get a pot or more for Hometree to grow? Bear in mind, we don’t want to lose control of the growth.>”
“<Our Gatherers can tend to grow easily; they know their plants well as long as they’re informed on that plant’s natural growth cycles. They can handle anything. Eywa can easily maintain control that we miss but I shouldn’t think it is too much of a concern; these fruits will draw in many animals to consume. Pa’li will certainly be drawn by it’s sweetness.>”
“[Bet she has a sweet tooth.]” Nadine whispered to Jake in Spanish as she patted his shoulder to leave.
Jake snorted a little.

“Sir, scanners have shown ISV Destiny had stopped short of Pandora and adrift.”
Selfridge’s head turned to Officer Beckley as he entered his office before he dropped his unobtainium rock onto the pad to float. “How far?”
“Approximately 220,000 miles short. A Valkyrie is equipped to make the journey and dock more fuel to get it the engines to kick it back to life for the last stretch.” He said, pulling up the maps, highlighting the coordinates pinging from the near-derelict vessel on a tablet. “No need to redirect another ISV and it can escorted for safe cargo transfer.”
Selfridge glowered at the screen. This month was already down and shit in profits with the refinery down and the use of a space expedition would be costly but he could probably sweet-talk his superiors with the news of the ISV’s retrieval; putting the effort in would make him and the RDA look good publicly since the loss of the ISV Destiny had been world news and damaging to the RDA’s reputation so the news of its return would be glorious… for a bit. Some things were unfortunately public domain given the lies the RDA had with NASA, ERA and the SDED,
With the mine still out of action and the clean-up still going, the ISV transport Unobtainium, Gas and oil supplies were still in the process of being boxed and stocked until the next ISV came and dropped and exchanged for the return. They had a Valkyrie available to do that. The ISV full repairs were another matter; he’d need to see if the RDA was willing to repair it or decommission it entirely; those parts would be useful.
“How long would it take?”
“If all goes smoothly and follows the emergency protocols we have for this exact situation and accounting for distance and technical upgrades since they were written, I’d suggest seven days, including travel there and back. Eight for touch-down on Hell’s Gate soil.” Beckley said, pulling up the relevant file packet that the RDA had created decades ago. “I’ve been running mathematical models since we first found out, sir, just to be ready.”
Selfridge hummed, caring little on the officer’s extra attention to detail. “I’ll start making plans to get this sorted.” And cost-efficient as well.
-
Jake, N’deh and Ashely rode behind Ka’ani and Saeyla with Tsu’tey leading up higher ground. Neptune happily trotted with the pace but most of that was due to the mushed-up strawberry pouch Jake had as a treat for later. Behind them, they were shadowed by Maru riding beside them but they ignored the escort.
His heart fluttered a little as the path narrowed and forced to go single-line. A low crack and a rock crumbling into the void of fog did little comfort to him and Neptune. They didn’t talk, but they didn’t need to.
Soon, they were forced off the Pa’li, so after giving Neptune the last of the strawberries mush and the intent for them to return to camp, Jake followed the group up. But man, he soon felt the soft burn of effort as he climbed, pulling himself up off particular steep parts; his bandaged arm throbbed a little and his heart sang in his chest but it was worth the effort.
His heart sunk once when he slipped; not his fault but the rock and vine they climbed moved but thankfully, he succeeded in staying on. The air smelt different, turning colder higher up before Tsu’tey stopped at a clear endpoint. Jake eyed the opportunities of certain death as they waited for something.
“<What now?>”
“<We climb.>” Tsu’tey said, then took a dive towards the large vines that had been twisted towards them from the overhead mountain above them.
Ashely hesitated a little but took a breath and jumped next, swiftly followed by Ka’ani, N’deh and Maru. Saeyla took a more mental break and Jake followed on the last available vine and groaned as he pulled himself up, glad for one Neytiri hadn’t been kind in the early days. N’deh pulled him up a little over the ledge which he nodded his thanks for before Tsu’tey started off again, running into the cave systems and out to the open over a large connecting beanstalk.
Bellow was the carpet of trees and life, a swath of the river wove and cut through, a new pillar of mountains rising up but not meeting the mass of floating rock which would be stunning to look at but Jake couldn’t afford to spend his attention more, his heart pounding as he echoed the steps to bouncy over the vines and finally, up into the rookery; the familiar cries becoming too loud to ignore by the time they reached a cave and N’deh was bouncing excitedly, despite being out of breath.
Jake happily took a second to collect himself, shrugging off his bow and lent out to the open end to the wide view, each breath a welcome and his heart began to slow down a little. His limbs felt heavy with the strain but not nearly so bad as before. They didn’t shake, which was good. There were no signs of blood from his arm either, to the stitches didn’t break despite feeling his arm had another heartbeat.
The familiar form of Seze made Jake grin, stepping back as Neytiri landed in the opening, nor was she alone as Kim also jumped off of Seze. Tsu’tey frowned at the woman’s presence.
“Kim?” Jake couldn’t help but laugh, pleasantly surprised. “<I thought you were going to wait at Hometree?>”
“<Na, I’d rather watch two of my favourite people get their Ikran’s. Cheer you on from the sides and… well why should I miss out testing you if you mess up and die>”
“Oh, I feel so loved.>” Jake feigned hurt.
“<I see you, Tsu’tey.>” Neytiri greeted, offering him a friendly smile.
“<It is not safe for her or her children she carries to be here>” Tsu’tey hissed quietly in concern, eyeing Kim’s belly. “Wild Ikran may not discern visitors to those taking their rites.>”
Neytiri tisked. “<I gave her a bola and yìmkxa to ensure safety measures.>” She replied back. “<I wouldn’t have brought her here unprepared>”
Tsu’tey made another displeased hiss. “<Then it is on you should something happen.>”
Neytiri’s eyes narrowed but she raised her chin and nodded once. “<So be it.>”
Jake watched the interaction softly, eyeing Kim’s less-than-impressed stare before she reached forward and touched both his and N’deh’s chest with her partially-gloved hands.
“<Good luck, all of you.>” She said, “<Don’t give them any slack to punt you off the edge and until you bond, they don’t give a fuck about your life expectantly. Na’vi have died before so be not just aware of your Ikran but also your surroundings and the edges of the clip. Just be glad the Ikran don’t shit all over the place and keep their rookery clean but that is no promise an accident didn’t happen and I think you slipping off the edge due to shit is not the story you want to be recounted to the clan and camps… or your funeral. Don’t die like morons.>”
“<Thank you for… pointing that out.>” Jake remarked dryly.
N’deh nodded once, patting Kim’s supportive hand and moving from her touch to face the group leader. “<Me first, please.>” N’deh begged to Tsu’tey.
Tsu’tey eyed N’deh for a moment before he nodded. “<Okay, lead through.>”
N’deh wasted no time in walking between the gap from the edge and the waterfall, shadowed by Maru. The warrior grinned as a saddled Ikran landed in the opening, close enough to indicate it was her tamed beast. N’deh didn’t spend a thought, pulling his yìmkxa out and ready.
Jake followed, his eyes watching his friend as he transferred over the foliage and Ikran. Some just flew away; their colouring a mixture of colours but… the size looked smaller; young Ikran who weren’t ready to consider the notion of a bond with a Na’vi. About seven fled or backed away but Jake noticed as one Ikran stood their ground as N’deh approached.
This one was light blue with purple patches, black and white striping, and bright orange accents and its yellow eyes were fixed clearly on N’deh as he approached. It gave a clear warning hiss, flexing its teeth at him so N’deh wound his yìmkxa slowly, making eye contact with them and hissed back… then it lunged at him.
N’deh tossed the yìmkxa and it caught the Ikran’s jaw, locking around tightly and muzzling it before he dove forwards and onto the creature but it wasn’t so simple as that as it other means to rid itself and tried to buck and roll. N’deh wrapped his legs around its neck, locking himself in place and gripped the tswin intently, pulling its head back and not being soft with his grip either; forcing the Ikran to choose between lowering its force or risking sharp pulling on the kuru; even if it was protected by cartridge; it was sensitive.
Jake watched as it tried to swipe but N’deh pulled his tswin forwards and connected it.
“<Be calm.>” N’deh echoed, releasing the tight grip and the Ikran obeyed, going from hostile to docile, its breathing still ragged and its pupils huge. N’deh’s breath was laboured, loosening up his legs but he grinned, his eyes alight behind his burgundy and pink face paint as he tugged the yìmkxa free.
Maru immediately ran back and jumped onto her Ikran, in time as N’deh’s Ikran moved and jumped from the rookery, and the two warriors vanished into the clouds.
Jake called after him, grinning.
“Whoop! You didn’t die an idiot!” Kim shouted then promptly flicked Jake in the arm. “<Your turn>”
Jake scoffed a little.
“<Yes, Jakesully will go next.>”
“You jinxed that,” Jake muttered to Kim but he felt… a new energy fill him now. He knew what to do. Find an Ikran… it would choose him first and attack and attack to kill him. Seemed like a counter-productive move to make a friend for life but he wasn’t going to question it; he just gotta survive it and hope Kim didn’t laugh over his grave if he fucked up.
“<Remember, move fast and precise>,” Neytiri said, closing the distance behind him. “<My uncle made it look easy but he had experience. Do not let his ease fool you. It can be lethal, Jake.>” Her hand touched his pec softly.
Jake nodded, pulling his yìmkxa out and took his steps towards it, twirling it to enjoy the familiar motion, offering comfort to his actions as if this was a sling. Would a sling work on the back of an Ikran? If humans made it work on the back of horses… maybe he could practise?
“<Focus, Jake.>” Kim called.
Right. Death battle first. Questions later.
As expected, a few leapt and flew away before Jake found his sights settling on an unafraid, emerald green, black and purple-spotted Ikran with a blue accent that turned to face him. Jake’s head tilted, his heart leaping with a deep sense of anticipation.
It hissed at him, flexing his teeth. Jake felt the urge to follow, allowing the air to pass up before he bared his teeth, hissing back which carried. The Ikran responded with another.
“Let’s dance.” He grinned, twirling his yìmkxa again starting off slow but picking up speed, meeting his eye trying to coax it into the first move. He took the bait as he snarled and dove but it was enough to snap around his jaw, dancing off to the side and jumped onto his back but the Ikran rose onto his back legs, batting his wings that forced Jake to grip harder, almost sliding around its neck but bent his knee, forcing himself to stay the right side on; the edge of the cliff got dangerously close as the weight shifted and the wing-generated draft stung at his eyes… but he grasped at his head, pulling trying to force its head down. Control the head, control the body.
He felt the brief moment of stone under his feet as it fell forward but twitched as its wing swung up but didn’t quite reach.
“<Match the bond!?” Neytiri called out.
He didn’t relent the grip just yet, as part of him wanted to try for the tswin but he tried to follow more of N’deh’s work, locking his legs around its neck; he could easily get bucked straight off if he let go so suddenly and give it a chance.
No.
He crossed his ankles and pushed his weight to force its head down onto the ground before he let go, pushing his weight into his font to counteract the Ikran’s attempt to force him up and grasped the tswin and hurriedly his own before he felt the Ikran try to shift and… he felt the tendrils connect…
His mind was more than his own.
He could feel the pouncing of the Ikran’s heart, the adrenaline that coursed through both and the urge it had to still kick him off.
“Stop..”
Then the fight left his Ikran’s form, leaving it heaving a little for breath but it felt calmer now, cautious in their connection as it felt his mind but felt his intent and… it slowly moved and shifted to get comfortable as he lent away off his head.
“That’s it… you’re mine.” Jake felt the thrill of victory, his hands unwinding the yìmkxa. The Ikran flexed his jaw, relief in regaining his mouth and his bite. Jake settled as he rose up, shifting now calmly.
“Go. First flight seals the bond.” Neytiri said, hurrying to his side, urging them intently “You cannot wait.”
Jake shifted his feet onto the Ikran’s collar that gutted out; offering natural footrests without a saddle before he gripped both tswin’s tightly.
“Fly.”
And boy, the Ikran did not hold back as he dove forward, his little position prepping worked wonders to stop him from falling off but it was hard as he felt the cold beating of the wind bite at his skin and his eyes stung at the slight plummet to their path.
“Level out!”
He levelled out, a bit awkwardly and the intensity of the wind dropped, urging the Ikran to slow down in his path and… take a moment to adjust; feeling how the wind flowed under and around them… and it felt a… deep sense of belonging as he rode, looking down over the forest.
Jake took a few shallow breaths. “There… we go.” He let go, weakly patting his Ikran’s head. “Thanks, bud.”
It took a few seconds to notice the looming mountain in their way and gently nudged the Ikran out of its path before he heard an echoing chirp. His head craned around before he grinned up, waving up as Neytiri joined him, her face so alight in the noon’s sun with joy. No words were said but he relished the feeling of this… freedom.
He was a flyer now.
Ikran Makto.
Neytiri flew ahead, gesturing him onward out away from the mountains; the distant form of Hometree. They’d fly back.
“Race ya!” he called.
Neytiri grinned, all too happy before he egged his mount on and both Ikran and Makto took the challenge…
-
It was no surprise that Neytiri won, but instead of going to the branches, Neytiri led him down to the ground just outside in sight of everyone. She touched down first, jumping off of Seze and watched his very clumsy descent before he slipped off his back.
“His name, I have decreed as Robert-H-Sully. Bob for short.” He decided with a grin, “Named after my late father, Robert.”
His attention turned as a new shadow descended; half expecting it to be N’deh or Ashely but to Jake’s surprise, it wasn’t either of them. Neytiri gasped in surprise and he turned to see a dark blue Ikran with purple and red dots touch down and on it was the familiar pregnant woman holding onto both tswins and looking very at ease.
“Well, I feel like I cheated.>” Kim remarked, looking very sheepish but still very pleased with herself as she stroked her Ikran’s head. “<Tsu’tey was kinda right, I shouldn’t have gone up. I watched Ashely get hers so I went back the way I came but she wouldn’t let me leave when I tried.”
Jake just snorted, his heart too light to care, even as Mo’at came out and gasped, then began to both check Kim, her baby bump and scold her.tu
